I am a Taiwanese, and this video does an excellent job of explaining the topic in an easy-to-understand way. Taiwan is an island nation deeply influenced by the Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese. Terms like *import substitution, export expansion, and science and industrial parks* are often mentioned in Taiwanese textbooks regarding the country’s economic history. Although Taiwanese people occasionally criticize the government for its slow administrative efficiency and bureaucratic rigidity from a business perspective (for example, the high tariffs on automobiles meant to protect domestic production. In contrast to South Korea, where high car tariffs fostered the globally renowned Hyundai, Taiwan’s high tariffs over decades have not significantly improved its automobile industry. The domestic car brand, Luxgen isn’t even popular among Taiwanese people. -we mockingly nickname it LE SE JUN -a pun meaning "garbage germ.")- overall, most people still trust the government’s long-term economic policies. We continue to work hard toward achieving the "Taiwanese Dream" of owning the "Five Essentials to Success"-savings, a car, a house, marriage, and children.
The map shown at the end of the video, which paints both China and Taiwan in red, is erroneous. Taiwan, an independent state with sovereignty of its own, should be highlighted with another color! On the other hand, the Hai-Nan Island located southern of China with a size a little short of that of Taiwan is part of China, and should be colored red!
Because Taiwan people work very hard !!! And for parents hard working, most of Taiwanese grandparents take care of their grandchildren . So, this is a really special social situation. “Everybody works really hard!” When people retire from their jobs, they don’t really retire. Because they will take care of grandchildren. Even many women still work when they have children.( Because they get supported from family!)

Essentially, the development of Taiwan's industry and economy from the mid to late stages to the present has little to do with Chiang Kai-shek's regime. It is more substantially related to the policies of Presidents Chiang Ching-kuo, Lee Teng-hui, and Tsai Ing-wen. As for President Ma Ying-jeou, his political approach of yielding to the Chinese Communist Party, along with his actions in weakening Taiwan's economy and defense, makes him a leader who betrayed Taiwan.
Don't mistake it. Whenever a country succeeds, PRC people say it's because of the colonizers. Don't mistake it. The two East Asian countries with the lowest average wealth are North Korea and China.
The Manchus as the colonizer did not care much about Taiwan until late 1800s...That's almost 200 years later after the Manchus conquered Taiwan. It's not until Qing and France had a war over Vietnam in 1884, and the French attacked the Pescadores and Formosa islands that Qing finally found out the importance of Taiwan's location. However, Qing lost Taiwan 10 years later to Japan through the first Sino-Japanese War over Korea in 1894. It's interesting to know that it's also the war in Korea and Vietnam that changed Taiwan's fate after WWII. After Korean War(USA and China/USSR fought over Korea) started, USA decided to defend Taiwan. After Vietnam War started, USA decided to make a lot of USA bases on the island of Formosa. Taiwan used to be like Okinawa in the past.
Taiwan got rich 35 years ago. In case you people don't know about, in 1995 Taiwan hold $800 billions (US dollars) foreign currency reserves, the number one in the world. Right now down to a little more than $600 billions, the number five in the world. With just a population of 22 millions, Taiwan is in any mean a healthy county.
The reason Taiwan is so prosperous is due to the hard-working labor force and the high standard of education that produces many elites. Taiwanese people's quick learning ability and vocational education are very successful. Additionally, the relatively low wages contribute to this success. Japan once analyzed that Taiwan's culture tends to be more submissive and obedient, which indirectly makes workers in Taiwan more diligent and treat their work as a top priority. Taiwanese people are accustomed to getting things done rather than expressing themselves, which is quite the opposite of the work culture in some countries like India. However, this also contributes to Taiwan's silent success, with the CEOs of Nvidia and AMD both being Taiwanese, and TSMC being a true pride of Taiwan.

1946 TIME: (6 Months after KMT China took over under US tutelage) "the Chinese Army that took over the island, under U.S. tutelage, last fall. But the resumption of trade with tropically lush, industrially rich Formosa was a sweet-&-sour business. Formosans complained that the Chinese occupation army was looting stocks, letting crops, refineries, railroads and power plants go to rack & ruin." "Japan Got the Atom. Chen Yi rounded up scores of “collaborators” while his pooh-bahs made themselves snug. Last week “Down with the Governor!” posters appeared all over the island. In two towns, hungry natives burned sugar godowns. Formosans greeted the few visiting Americans with: “You were kind to the Japanese, you dropped the atom on them. You dropped the Chinese on us!” Thoughtful Chinese on the mainland began to agree with the Formosans. Said Ta Rung Pao, China’s counterpart of the New York Times: “Fundamentally speaking, China was not qualified to take over . . . she lacks the men . . . technique . . . commodities . . . capital. She governs, but is inefficient. She takes, but she does not give. This is the government’s shame.” Most foreign observers in Formosa agreed that if a referendum were taken today Formosans would vote for U.S. rule. Second choice-Japan." 1949 TIME: After the "refugees" arrived "In Washington, Formosa assumed an increasing prominence in discussions of future U.S. strategy in Asia. With the help of U.S. sea and air power it could be held against Communist attack. It flanked the line of a possible Communist advance across the South China Sea. But Formosa had its drawbacks as an anti-Communist redoubt governed by Chinese Nationalists. Mostly these boiled down to the simple fact that 6½ million Formosans did not like the Chinese. Last week TIME Correspondent Wilson Fielder cabled this picture of the island in its new, unwanted role: Good Old Days. Cool breezes drifted gently across the golden grain of rice paddies that step up the lush green tropical mountains ringing Formosa’s capital. Farther south, water, buffaloes dragged plows for peak-capped farmers turning soil for one of their three yearly rice crops. Nearby lay fields thick with sugar cane and vegetables. At night, electric lights -rare in rural Asia-twinkled from the modest huts of tiny villages. By day many villagers not needed in the fields worked in the small industrial plants that dot the island. Compared to mainland Chinese, the Formosans were well off. Nevertheless they were grumbling. In guarded whispers they spoke of the “good old days” of Japanese rule. The years since V-J day had taken with them much of the sting of iron-fisted totalitarianism. The islanders now remembered how Japan had given , order to their lives, while China had brought them to the brink of chaos." "Thousands of Chinese soldiers, with the defeat of Shanghai just behind them, camped in the cavernous railroad station or roamed the streets. Civilians and soldiers (1,500,000 in number) were refugees from the communism now flooding south across China. They were also a troublesome burden to a people who wanted their island home for themselves." "Pigs Just Eat. This resentment is grounded partly in the psychology of a colonial people whose standards of living, general educational level and technical proficiency were raised well above the standards of their mainland Chinese brethren. The Japanese, for example, trained 30,000 Formosan doctors, more than the number in all the rest of China. But when the mainland Chinese took over the island, they did not even treat the Formosans as equals, but as “liberated” inferiors. The result is that even thoughtful Formosans now say: “We think of the Japanese as dogs and the Chinese as pigs. A dog eats, but he protects. A pig just eats.” Many Formosans want complete independence for their island-to be gained by revolution or any other means. Others talk of “autonomy under a good Chinese government,” neither Nationalist nor Communist. A third group favors a U.S. mandate." No thanx
Refugees and a large number of kidnapped illiterate soldiers. Before WW2, China was a third-world poor country and Japan was a developed country and that's why Taiwan was chosen by Chinese Nationalist.
Unfortunately you missed probably the most important factor of Taiwan’s success - it’s people, education and workforce culture. What you called “refugees” from Chinese civil war in 1949 are two million of the top scientists, engineers, educators, finance, economic, business, arts and literature professionals and civic leaders and essentially the top percentiles of every cross sections of the Chinese population. We are talking about adding the “cream of the crops” of 500 million population to an island of 6 million. This infusion of intellects, skills, culture and genetic pool formed the foundation of a special people destined for achievements. The arrival of this population and the immediate subsequent implementation and later expansion of mandatory education for the whole population to increase literacy, workforce development, and cultural learning including civic responsibilities, eventually created a workforce that’s capable of carrying out many of the successes in the video. I think omitting people development in Taiwan’s story is not only an insult to its people but also misleadingly implying similar governmental steps in another part of the world can achieve the same results.
Tiger economy? That is in the past. We are facing bigger and deeper problem to our future society. I can tell you as one of 23 million people in this island, we do not have next generation. All Japanese colonial railways, road construction, and economy were entirely destroyed by American bombing. After World War II, Taiwan did not even have an inch of railway. The construction during the Japanese colonial period has nothing to do with Taiwan's economic miracle. It was the ten major construction projects carried out in the 1960s, 15 years after World War II, that truly paved the way for Taiwan's economic miracle, leaving a lasting impression on the island's history.

-we mockingly nickname it LE SE JUN -a pun meaning "garbage germ.")-
overall, most people still trust the government’s long-term economic policies.

"In Washington, Formosa assumed an increasing prominence in discussions of future U.S. strategy in Asia.
Last week TIME Correspondent Wilson Fielder cabled this picture of the island in its new, unwanted role:
Good Old Days. The islanders now remembered how Japan had given , order to their lives, while China had brought them to the brink of chaos."
"Thousands of Chinese soldiers, with the defeat of Shanghai just behind them, camped in the cavernous railroad station or roamed the streets. Civilians and soldiers (1,500,000 in number) were refugees from the communism now flooding south across China. They were also a troublesome burden to a people who wanted their island home for themselves."
"Pigs Just Eat. A pig just eats.”
Many Formosans want complete independence for their island-to be gained by revolution or any other means. Others talk of “autonomy under a good Chinese government,” neither Nationalist nor Communist. A third group favors a U.S. mandate."

During World War II, Taiwan was a substantial military base for Japan, and the U.S. military carried out intensive bombings.
