You mean the one that sounds like "wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" or the one that sounds like "whwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhwhhwhwhwhwh?" Which one came first?
My friend went to see Sunn and he said it was like someone put a vacuum over the world and kept turning it on and off within milliseconds and at points felt like he was literally breathing the electricity and amplitude of the riffs
I didn't "get" Sunn O))) until I saw them live at the Berghain last year. It's still not something I go to listen to at home but I now 100% understand what it's all about and I can definitely respect that.
@@HiGlowie I was the same way until I saw them on the monoliths & dimensions tour; it's honestly kinda meditative and pummeling in the best way possible. your organs kinda liquefy when you're in a venue that's just bringing about a catharsis you can't put into words. I like their recorded material too but live is a totally different animal and worth experiencing at least once before you write em off.
I saw them 2 times in my life. Absolutely soul-crushing. The first time was with Attila doing throat singing at the beginning, and there was multiple well thought-out sections for the whole show with different instruments and voice styles playing at specific moments. For Drone doom, that's something. To anyone daring to see them live for the first time : Bring earplugs ! You won't regret it.
Saw this in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Changed my perspective on music as a whole. Insane how you can really tell different parts calming down and picking up when hearing this afterwards. It's a complete vaccuum of space and time when you're witnessing this in person.
I saw sunn o))) live in Paradiso a long time ago what an experience my heart got into the right rhythm and everything that was stuck came loose with this video I feel reborn again
was there. absolutely packed. many people sat on the floor towards the back soaking this in. very different experience than i had anticipated but it was surreal nonetheless. the sheer volume and sonic pressure forces you into a trance like state. their set surely felt longer than 1hr20min.
Saw Shoshin Duo at the Lodge Room in LA. I saw them on their Life Metal Tour as well, but this was a whole other experience. The air pressure is all funked up and its energy really fills the room so much so that the hour and a half experience is exhausting and afterwards feels like coming out of a psychedelic experience. Slept really well that night.
In the beginning, there was silence, and the silence was formless and void. And on the first day, God decreed that there would be drone, and the air was filled with a deep and trembling hum. The earth quaked beneath the weight of it, and the heavens vibrated with its resonance. On the second day, God brought forth the amplifier, and it multiplied the sound, so that the drone grew louder and stretched across all creation. The mountains trembled, and the seas were stirred by its force. On the third day, God commanded the distortion, and it poured forth like fire, wrapping the drone in endless layers of noise. The sound was both overwhelming and infinite, without beginning and without end. On the fourth day, God ordained the feedback, and it looped upon itself, a ringing echo that filled all spaces and silences, until there was nothing that was not enveloped by its power. On the fifth day, God saw that it was good, and so summoned the darkness, thick and impenetrable, to rest upon the deep tones. The sound became as a weight, pressing upon the soul, a heaviness without relief. On the sixth day, God set the hands to the strings, slow and deliberate, to stretch time itself, so that each note hung in eternity, and the spaces between were vast as the firmament. And on the seventh day, God rested, as the drone continued on, everlasting, without ceasing. And it was called Sunn O))), and it was very good.
Beat frequencies and harmonics exist in musical tones, especially when distortion is introduced. Adding 2 notes together (dyads) begins a rich tapestry of vibrations, from fine to low frequency influencing and forcing each other into existence in the surrounding air. Sonic Youth used to do this too (back when they played with huge amps) ...but not in such a "metal" way.
Peak at 125db so yeah pretty loud 😂 but I didn't find it too loud compared to some other bands, depends of the venue and the amounts of high in the music I guess
I wonder if they have sticky lungs. All that fog smoke to your face is sure to do some damage. I used to have a fog machine in my room and it became like ghostbusters sticky.
This live recording is amazing...but pales in comparison to in person. Cliché but true, you really had to of been there. I saw them on the euro tour this year and made sure to get to the front, its so much more transcending and arty live in person.
I've always wondered if there is any writing the parts for the instruments or if they just wing it every time. I love the sound, but I'd have a hard time telling one song from another.
Henry Rollins said it best, when it comes to these guys: "Sunn O))) live is either a great night of your life or a sonic apocalypse that will Heimlich you right back to the sidewalk."
...will give an attempt at answer, already knowing it will be inadequate. You know that song you really love and the guitar or bass has a tone or hum you really enjoy? What if some folks made it all about maximalizing that aspect, enveloping, savoring, offering cascading interplay of body embracing hum and tone for a resonating vibration ceremony, sustaining a meditative overwhelming immersion in it, all nuance and slow-motion molten golden moments blossoming into timeless sensation of feeling and riding the hum and tone into another transcendent world? That sort of maybe poorly says what these folks are going for...

It would be the longest tiny desk set ever.
