  • In November 2022, Evil Greed invited Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))) into the EGHQ to discuss the creative process behind the creation of the band’s merchandise and capture his perspective and inspiration on some of the Sunn O))) merch designs that we offer in our online store.
In this first episode, Stephen O’Malley goes into detail on the creation and background of Sunn O))) ’s iconic ‘Oracle’ design, originally made as part of a release linked to an exhibition by artist Banks Violette. Watch the full video now on the @evil_greed RUclips channel.
In 2006, Sunn O))) was invited to the Maureen Paley Gallery in London for the opening of a new exhibition by visual artist Banks Violette. For the new show, Violette cast a replica of Sunn O))) ’s entire stage set (amps, speaker cabinets, mini Moog, guitars, etc.) in his signature resin and salt material as a sculptural piece. At the opening of the exhibition, Violette had Sunn O))) performing on a lower level of the gallery, out of the public view, on sculptural stage platforms. At the same time, the facsimile of every piece of equipment used in their performance was on view in another gallery upstairs. This was an unorthodox presentation for any audience, as they could hear and undoubtedly feel the performance, but they were not allowed to see the musicians. After the music ebbed into nothingness, Sunn O))) and their equipment vanished, the public entered the galleries and experienced the absence and remains of their performance and the new sculptural work.
You can see the original art piece “Sunn_O)))_ (black stage_ coma mirror) 2006” currently displayed at BPS22 Hainaut Province Museum of Art in Charleroi until May 5, 2024, as part of the exhibition ‘Banks Violette: The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull (2005-2023)’.”

Excellent video, thank you. Hoping Scott (xasthur) is doing well, cool to see him get mentioned here. I sold him a guitar in 2019, hope it's still out there somewhere.
