"In a double blind test, I don't know if any of us would be able to tell the difference between the album and an amp that somebody left on by accident". Gotta LOVE Blayne! :D
I guess what you might really miss by being 10 minutes late to a Sunn O))) concert is feeling the wall of sound first hit you. That is if they weren't messing around with ambient stuff for the first 15 minutes.
Life Metal is a fantastic LP, I managed to get it on orange vinyl on record store day. I'm a big fan of sunn & this LP didn't disappoint. Got my tickets for the Manchester gig in October and taking my 17 year old nephew along as well (he has very little idea what he's in for).
Intro to this album comes from Bathory's "Blood Fire Death". “The intro is actually stolen from Bathory, the [1988] Blood Fire Death record,” Anderson admits. “What happened was that Stephen and I are obsessed with Bathory, especially that record. That’s my personal favorite. In the past, on [2005’s] Black One, there is a riff from Blood Fire Death that we just slowed down. Same notes, but you can’t tell; it’s unrecognizable, because we play it so slow. I love that intro of the horses going into battle, and I just joked and said, ‘Why don’t we run that through some amps?’ It was funny, because I was thinking, ‘Albini is not going to be into this idea. He’s probably going to be like, “I don’t know, guys,”’ but right away, he was like, ‘Where can I find that?’ He looked it up on RUclips and then ran that through his board. The only computer in the room is the one that Steve uses on chat forums, but there is no recording going on there. So, there was a computer involved in that he transferred RUclips, ran it through his board, and then we ran it through some amplifiers and distortion pedals and added our own horse samples.”
This album is not on Spotify... Damn it!! Without a doubt I'll be buying the vinyl record. And that comment about not being able discern the difference between this and a Amp left on... Gold!!
This is my first time hearing about the band (yes shocker) but I am MOST DEFINITELY checking out their catalog to see what I'm in for. ☺ I really dig the imagery on the cover art!
Bought the vinyl and the cd on record store day, Album was recorded totally in analogue no digital here and damn it makes the music more heavier especially on vinyl. The first time ever my roommate told me to turn down my stereo lol
Anyone ever heard of Solmania. They are a droning Japanese Noise Core duo. They use crazy mutant guitars with multiple necks, extra strings, and three outputs running through dozens of effects pedal and three amps.
Hey Banger I love your show. I have a suggestion. What about having a show where you talk about new bands you've discovered or that we have polled for you to check out?
They have a series called Metal Monthly, where Blayne recommends bands he discovered coming out that month. and On Patreon, you can vote on what albums you want them to review next. :) Welcome to the Banger family.
Blayne whats up with the lock horns? New subscriber but it seems that part od the show isnt as often now? I like joint discussions like that, you need something similar thats more often.
I don't know if Blayne still gets down in the comments section or not, but I'm curious what he thinks of the April 5th release from Blind Monarch, What Is Imposed Must Be Endured. Has anyone else had a chance to listen to it?
Honestly this might be my favorite Sunn O))) record. Picked it up on Record Store Day and have already listened to it multiple times. For those who want to try getting into them. Sunn on vinyl is way better. You hear it the way you should. Life Metal I feel is probably their most accessible material to date.
there's actually a funny story behind the album title: "STEREOGUM: Tell me about the title Life Metal. ANDERSON: Well it’s a relative of death metal. I’ll just throw that out there. The story’s actually kind of humorous. We were at a party with Nicke Andersson from Hellacopters and Entombed. And he was talking about when Entombed had signed to Columbia Records in the mid-’90s. He started getting calls from his old friends in Norway in the black metal scene saying that he was a sellout and that he was no longer “death metal,” he was “life metal.” And [he was] actually getting death threats, I guess. So we thought that was the most insane thing we’d ever heard, and it kind of became an inside joke with the band. Like, when something, like, not gloom-and-doom was happening, it was “life metal.” A vocalist we work with, Attila [Csihar of Mayhem], was getting really into fitness on tour. O’MALLEY: Exercising in the morning and stuff instead of being dead in the back of the bus. ANDERSON: So, he would say, “Hey bros, I’m gonna go do some life metal.” It just became this inside joke among the band. I think the title was also a really accurate description or reflection of the music and also the mindset and the mood of the players on the record. Me and Stephen and Tos [Nieuwenhuizen], the keyboard player, [were] just at a point in our life where things were a different sort of tone and mood. And I think that’s reflected in the playing, which is really the important part. I think that the title reflects the atmosphere of the music. And really, the artwork for the record and the choices made there with the colors and stuff, it’s very different from our other records which are very … there are a lot of dark [tones] and a lot of blacks and whites and things like that. "
@metalcomedy finally got my letter and Riddick T-shirt in the mail, thanks for the letter Blayne, I'm gonna start demanding everyone calls me Sir from now on not just my girlfriend XD \M/.
I wouldn’t call Life Metal a “happy” album. It’s more uplifting and spiritual, but not necessarily happy. But definitely less dark and more positive than any of their other albums. It’s significantly less dark and muddy, it has so much clarity and the guitars are much brighter than any of their other albums
Just my opinion disclaimer: but I can listen to Sunn O))) and it mostly sounds like music to my ears, Portal on the other hand is just way too bizarre for my tastes.
Inkestienwd to this album, and it doesn't do it for me, I think that it's more of my general Dislike for thing like Sludge and Drone, that the songwriting or the quality itself.
Any reason why on reviews you don't play any music? That short blip does not really count... I like discovering bands I did not know from other sub-genres and this is not giving me anything. Like the review type but hearing excerpts from the album would be helpful.
The latest posted video answered that question: Copyrights and permissions. I understand. I will use the links provided and get the sound from there now! :)
This album sounds like my dad smoked weed for the first time and played my guitars all night because he's never played guitar ever....if u like this album u are literally not a fun person. I fuckin hate this shit. Literally this is my dad open strumming a guitar, high as fuck for the first time putting his ear to the amp every time he strums .

My favourite Sun O))) thing is still Soused because I'm a massive Scott Walker fan and that album is effectively The Drift 2.0
Malthusian Epoch I wish the mix was a bit better...the guitars are buried.
Agree. Got a light?
@@AnalEyesAnalyzeAnalLies-666 RIP indeed. We won't see talent like his again for a very long time.
Why is it so appropriate that a Lynch fan is also a big Scott Walker fan is also a Sunn O))) fan? I could not say. But the sentiment is shared.
Would LOVE to see a Lock Horns episode on Drone Doom!

Yay Wormwitch! My front runner for album of 2019 so far!
Blayne is the man! Always insightful, entertaining and funny.
Come on, tell us the joke.

Their on tour starting tomorrow. Get a ticket if you can!!!
Cool story bro.

They're trying to get to $10,000 for their patreon donations before bringing it back because they want to do a 24 hour marathon stream
What are the two bands he mentions at 6:24? (I wish I could give thumbs-up thrice for this review.)
