To make leather you need lime water in a barrel (they are called soaked hides). You use the tanning on the scraped hides (soaked hides scraped with a knife in the crafting grid). The pelts that you cured with fat are now pelts. They can be used directly in various crafting recipes without making leather first.
if you dig a 1x1x1 hole up at your base, you can empty one bucket into that hole. The water in that hole will act as an infinite water source. You can keep taking water with your bucket from that single source and fill all your barrels indefinitely.
The algo loves the gram - so anyway you can create a wall that you can jump (down) on top of with any stone recipe and get out of w/e if you are in a pinch and dont have solid blocks or preferably hay hales.

Torches not put in torch holders will eventually burn out. If you pick them up and put them back before they die then the timer resets
