Hey I just got an old New Braunfels (,no pun intended),looks bout the same as yers, bit of rust ,could be sturdier,my has a propane addition, homemade ,which I reconnected( haven't lit yet )hopefully I can report back success,on that part, later. Lookin forward to your next video, your first ones are great. Thanx Peter
Im going to leave an encouraging comment when I get back. Im back. Your mods were helpful. I will tell you how when I return from labor day festivities. Im back and its alot easier to keep my smoker up to temp. Thanks.,
To those of you in the trades that do this sort of thing, I want to say ---- this is a craft, this is an art, and this is what makes the world work. Totally impressed! I honor your skills, and I scoff at all of you bankers. You have created a world where you will become irrelevant because your greed will crash the paradigm that made you rich, and those that can weld will be kings.
Thanks Pete! I also have a rust issue, that turned out to be worse than I first thought. I'm in the process of fixing that problem now.....stay tuned for part 3
Thanks! for your comment, as for my lid mod. I will soon find out , I just finished painting my smoker and I'm going to split some firewood, build a fire , season my smoker and take some videos.......as soon as my back heals up!
@localcrew Thank's.... I just finished relining my firebox & smoke chamber, I had some major rust problems. I hope that your smoker is in better shape than mine was.
WOW! I have plans of restoring my Silver Smoker too but...I highly doubt that I can do all you have done. That is IMPRESSIVE! I'm wishing I had taken welding in high school now. What would you charge to do a mod job such as this?
That charcoal basket looks great! I was thinking about making one 14" wide, 10" long and 12" high. I might just just do the 13x11x12 like yours instead. I'm getting ready to do a long smoke this weekend. What kind of smoke times can you get on your basket? I'm hoping for 10+ hrs. Thanks for sharing! This whole smoker looks STOUT and inspires plenty of ideas for mine.
@mollenauero3 Yeah, mine was new when I got it and I've kept a cover on it so it's structurally sound. The wheels suck though and it's sorta flimsy in areas. I like the gusseting and welding you've done on yours. Looks like just the ticket. I'd like to have a big trailer-mounted smoker but that's off in the future. Keep on smokin'!!
Hello, i am in process of restoring an old offset and I was wondering if, prior to painting your rig if you had to get all of the rust off of the body of the firebox and bottom of the pit? I have sanded them with my angle grinder but was unable to get 100% of the rust off... Thank you for your information.
It depends on what type of charcoal you use , and how much. I can get a good 8 hr smoke with 3 chimney's of kingsford briquettes ( 1 lit & 2 unlit ) may I suggest that you get yourself a firebox rake to keep the bottom of your firebox under the basket clean. to maintain good air flow and constant heat. hardwood lump charcoal for me, seems to burn hotter but faster but I'm still trying to experiment with my air dampener & smokestack dampener
I have a question, what amperage rating is the small blue welder I see? After watching all of the mods, I'm looking at getting a small welder of my own and am wondering what amperage rating is needed to weld steel of the gauge you're using? Thanks for posting your excellent work!
Valerifon1 My welder is a Miller challenger 172, amperage range is ( 40 - 170 amps ) its an older welder but it does a good job . Tractor Supply has a Hobart handler 140, that I think would fit your needs.
Your fire basket alone probably weighs in at 50lbs! Heat warping? I'd be more worried about back injuries. Great tips, excited to get mine modded up! One question... Your larger lid mods, the strapping for the better seal. Did that work good for you? Mine seals like shit, could drive a freight train through the gaps. Your fabricating skills are amazing, ideas are logical, outcome... OVERKILL!!! I love it!
No I also did not get 100% of the rust off of my smoker , prior to painting. What I found that worked really well, was a 4 1/2'' nylon rust stripping wheel. you can get them at Lowes, for about $4.00 each
I used 1/8 inch flat steel , as for the flanges I also cut them from flat steel and welded them on the baffle. the wire screen is called ( expanded metal ) you can buy it at (GRAINGER) you can check them out on line, you want to get ( 3/4 x 9 expanded flat) it cost around $50.00 for a 4' x 4' sheet.
Holy crap, I think you should figure out the man hours of all the modifications you have done because you just turned that smoker in the real Mccoys. You ought To be doing business with Brinkmann LOL. Now that will be one heavy duty smoker.
Thanks! for checking out my video, I do have a 120 gal tank and 1/4 in steel plate . But that is for another video series. The POINT! of these videos, is to address the shortcomings of these consumer grade smokers. which there are millions sold throughout the world.

I like your style. The only problem I see is that now I'll probably have to do some of the same stuff to my smoker!
Good stuff! If you BBQ anything like you do upgrades...I'm comin' for dinner!!
