Great idea to shoot monochrome when the common photographer would choose color! I have also done that and have some great B&W flower pics and Fall landscapes. It is a totally different view of the world. BTW, I tend to use the Red B&W filter, in my EM10ii so that flowers and fall leaves “pop” and everything else goes deep gray/black. Thanks for the instructive walkthrough on camera settings.
A realy wonderful tutorial, with hands on guidance demonstrated in your relaxed way, that achieved great photographs, realy terrific. And tips on portable comfort to, I am still still smiling, due to your great content. Your help I very much appreciate and as always hope it continues. Thank you Rob.

Awesome Rob! Most of the times I would do something like that in post processing of turning a photo black and white but you really got my attention. I really want to go out right now and do exactly what you showed. Great video!
@@RobTrek Yes. I am coming to appreciate presets and custom modes directly in camera more because I tried to post process the raw file to look somewhat like it from the JPEG and it isn't easy.
@ Rob P, we have to assume Olympus brought on the best color science people to develop the presets and what not. Still, its fun to tinker with the sliders.
Great video! Really useful! Could be good to hear how the settings on your camera can be obtained in post (I am a Nikon/Sony shooter) as I don't know how to replicate with my camera. But as said, a really useful video and settings carefully explained. Thank you! (you deserve have many more subs IMO). Oh, and btw: I think those yellow things with a green stem are daffodils, but then again, I'm a guy and that is waaay out of my comfort zone.
Thanks. You would just need to adjust the individual sliders for contrast, blacks and whites. Might also play with the clarity slider. Nikon has individual settings for each profile. It's been a while since I've turned on my Nikon or Sony. Can't remember where they are anymore. The key to these kinds of photos is really in the flash and crushing the shadows via exposure comp.

Rob thanks so much, this has really helped. Only thing is here in Oz the ambient light is so bright to crush it I had to go to F22, then I cannot see anything in my viewfinder to lock onto.Should i up the screen brightness or drop the aperture. Thanks in advance
Hi Rob I bought the Godox flash and X1 trigger you recommended. I tried your flash flower photography yesterday with some amazing results and I’m very happy. What bothers me though is that in Manual mode I can’t set the E-M10 II shutter speed faster than 1/180 when the Godox trigger is ON. In fact this won’t work in any other mode either. Using the built-in flash does not have this limitation and I can use 1/250. It seems you are using 1/250 with your E-M10 II and I wonder what I’m doing wrong. Any idea? Thanks a lot
Rob Trek 📸 Wow that worked! After setting that H switch on the trigger I can now dial in any higher value I want. Thanks so much for helping me with this, Rob 😀
Sure. Any where you'd like me to start? It's a big topic, like using off brand non ttl, ttl, hss, multi, remote, etc. I don't have any Olympus branded flashes, just godox and nikon. What is your use case scenario?
@@RobTrek the flash that came with my camera. It doesn't fire at all. And concerning the exposure. I am not sure how it works that's why I kindly asked how to use on camera flash to help me build up to the off camera
@@oyeleyeolalekan4486 Okay. I'll have to do a beginner video for that instead of asking you another dozen questions. Fortunately I have the same flash but will use my Penf to demonstrate as it doens't have a built in flash like the em10.
Great information -- glad to see you back! Here is the DUMBEST QUESTION you will get (my apologies): When putting in the F2 curve settings for highlights and shadows, is that ONLY FOR JPG output? That is, does that have any effect on capturing Raw pictures?
If you shoot raw + jpg, then the jpg file is baked. The raw file has an embedded jpg file that is baked. This is what you normally see on the back of the camera and when you open up in workspace. However, if you reset all the settings in workspace on the raw file, you will see the original raw image in full color.
Another great video Rob ! To photograph flowers , do you have some experience with the Olympus Macroconverter? Do you think it would be a good match with the 25mm f1.8? Thanks
The e-m10 ii has better 5 axis ibis and newer cpu for faster processing. Much better video quality. Photo image quality is pretty much the same. I'd go with the mark ii, skip the mark iii.

Looking at getting a e-m10...and new to mirrorless...what is the difference from the e-m10 and the e-m10 mark ii?

Yes, it will say on top of the camera near the power switch. The mark 1 has not designation, but the mark 2 and 3 will say so on top.
