- In this video we’ll learn about several words that are simply pronounced differently than they’re written (not due to sound change rules, or slang, etc.). For example, we’ll learn about the pronunciation of 닦다, 카페, 버스, 게임, 댄스, 서비사, 간단하다, 예요, and 자장면 (or 짜장면).

I've definitely wondered that about the word 조금. I always hear it pronounced as 쪼끔 or 조끔!
I noticed that with 조건. I hear it pronounced as 조껀
Interestingly, I found the intro (1st two minutes), which summarised what the video is NOT about, to be very useful too. 예들을 들어서, I know, use, and can hear (으)려고 well, but I *didn't* know the -ㄹ라고 version of it. I've heard the -ㄹ라고 form plenty of times, but I've always assumed it's something I haven't learned yet.

i've noticed this happening with 무조건 where people will say 무조껀 instead
Same with 여권 as 여꿘. Because there used to be a ㅅ in there but it's been dropped over time, but the pronunciation has been kept. You can check the pronunciation on naver dictionary.

Also I've heard that Korean word 눈 changes its pronuncuation depending on its meaning like its short u for eye and long u for snow. My korean is pretty good conversationally I've been there 3 times and I think its not too bad but I never actually learned how to pronounce individual sounds in the language. Can you help us with either giving some recommendations on where to find it or doing a lesson yourself

I heard that it is actually a official rule that english words are pronounced with the double consonant at the beginning. 카페 is still a exception because it starts with ㅋ not ㄱ
You can verify a word's official pronunciation with Naver dictionary. Sometimes it will list more than one official pronunciation for a word.

I just wanted to clarify that in America, they spell 자 장 면: 자 짱 면 or 차 짱 면. Either way it's spelt how it's pronounced, per another korean who lived in America. I'm American born korean & I understand that technicality. Thank U for all your lessons. Will follow for learning the korean language. As U say: C U next time!
Most of such different words have originated actually from Gyeonggi-do dialect or some Seoul dialect during the early to middle 20th century. ;) In general, Seoul-based language is assimilating other dialects nowadays, but sometimes the other way happens, too: absorbing non-Seoul or old Seoul words into today's Seoul language.
I might be wrong but I feel like 박스 is also pronounced 빡스
Is the reason why 간단 is pronounced 간딴 related to 사잇소리, eg why 한자 (Chinese characters) is pronounced 한짜, and 비빔밥 is pronounced 비빔빱? Or perhaps, by analogy with 상잇소리 that occurs in *some Sino-Korean words like 효과 and 태권도?

That's true! We actually pronounce the words you mentioned that way! Only news anchors and some Korean language related scholars would pronounce the right(?) way.

Hello Sir Billy, can you make a video about the differences with these: 이, 이거, 이것은, 이건, and 이게. I've been curious about them because their meaning is "this" but I think they have different ways on how or when to use them. I hope you notice this, thank you Sir Billy.

What about the Korean word for “delicious”? That’s tripping me up.
That's just 맛(이) 있다. There is a sound change rule for saying 맛, but if you're just saying something *is* delicious then that's all you need to know - 맛이 있다 or 맛있다.
I have a question about the ㄺ 받침. Like is 읽다 pronounced 일따 or 익따 I feel like I ve heard different words with this ending and some of them were pronounced one way and some the other, is there a rule or am i wrong and it s always one pronuncuation. 도와주세여~~
There is a rule when ㄱ is followed by another consonant. When it is followed, the consonant immediately gets more tone in it, for the ease of pronunciation.
For example : 읽다 is read as 익따. But be careful, that you should put more emphasis on the following consonant, which in this case is ㄸ

That's not a part of this video, as that's technically due to sound change rules.
@@GoBillyKorean I would accept that explanation if the spelling was 십륙 like in North Korea, but there's no way to know which words have this sound change
@@iopqu There are many sound change rules that you simply have to learn, but that are simple once you learn them and hear them used. For example ㄴ 첨가 is another sound change rule which you'd only know if you learned it.
I will go in Korean “갈거야” but We Pronounce it like “갈꺼야”
