36:38 the purpose of posting fake jobs is usually one of the following:
    1. Farming data
    2. Having a pool of potential applicants when you eventually are hiring

google is largely a cia/nsa operation. They were looking for a way to tie all the new information they were getting after the internet got popular to individual people so it can actually be useful. They caught wind of some research at Stanford and they threw a lot of money at the founders of google and have been partnered ever since. Page and Brin used to had regular meetings with cia officials at an office across the street from Stanford. Its no coincidence that google became as big as it has.

  • @ringlhach

I think a big part of why the internet feels smaller nowadays is that most people only engage with it at a surface level- each of us only really goes to a few dozen websites, look at stuff, and then move on, or we're tied up in apps, games, programs, etc that use it and aren't easily visible from the outside. We're not all out roaming the wilds any more.

Remember when the US' FCC allowed a public chat room referendum on Net Neutrality, and the "In Favor" side was like 10% bots but the "Against" side was 60% bots then was declared the "winner" and now it's legal for your ISP to data mine everything you do online in the US and sell it however they see fit? No, the internet is not better now. Back then there was so much more creativity. We ran big private websites, full of weird and wondrous stuff. I remember 'Adopt a Demon', and many more. I myself ran a massive site, purely created for the fun of it, with an interactive horror story, poetry, humour, games fairies, and.. trailing cursors!!! There were such fun codes one could adapt, like having something chase after the cursor and you had to be quick clicking on links, to escape the little critters. The possibilities seemed endless. Our guestbooks were overflowing with comments of people who had enjoyed what we had created. These days all creativity has been sucked out of the internet, and instead we have Twitter/X - hooray...

    "A chat in the pub."
You know, I think that perfectly sums up why I like react content so much, and I never really thought about it that way. I just like hearing people's stories and opinions, but yeah, "casual hangout" is the exact vibe of most of the react channels I'm subscribed to.
The first react channel I ever subscribed to, and the first Whistlerverse channel I subscribed to was Business Blaze. Imagine my surprise to find out that Mr. Screaming-Bald-Man was actually a very professional BBC / PBS worthy presenter!
I am very grateful for the niche that Buisness Blaze opened up to me, and I'm happy to finally have a solid idea of why I enjoy this content so much.

48:10 Danny, this part wasn’t quite right. Google sold search placements and allowed garbage websites to game the SEO. So a lot of legitimate websites got pushed lower and lower, onto page 3 or 4, to the point where they got no traffic and couldn’t afford to keep the site up. Google may not have intended this, but it is what happened and it is their fault

I don't really agree that the internet is much better nowadays.
It doesn't really matter how useful the modern internet can be, when it's arguably even more harmful.
There has never, in all of human history, been a tool that is so potentially damaging. The mass proliferation of extremism, misinformation, and cyber-crimes, in my opinion, result in the modern internet being a conclusive net-negative for society.
20 years ago, it was a useful tool that had occasional bad actors. Nowadays, it seems the bad actors (and their bots) completely outnumber and out perform everyone else.
Just think about all the people who would've lived relatively normal, happy lives had they not been victimized or seduced by the internet.

    • @FilmNerdy

Plus too much money has got involved. Now social media news has become the new Media Barrons of today's playground. It's no longer a grassroots things for the masses but now driven by bad actors and their bots to misinform. There is a good documentary called "All Watched By Machines of Loving Grace" by documentary film maker Adam Curtis that looked into this and he has since connected all of his work about power from just a small handful of people with the Internet in most of reoccurring documentaries. I remember saying to my friend thinking, his documentary is good but a bit too conspiratorial and out there. Now rewatching them it's depressing how strikingly accurate he got things right.
