Introduction to Army Of One: Director’s Cut

Hi, I’m Larry Charles. A few years ago I made a movie with Nic Cage and Russell Brand called Army Of One. Strangely despite Russell playing God it’s actually based on a true story. A stoner handyman on dialysis from Colorado believes he’s told by god to go to Pakistan and capture not kill Osama Bin Ladin. Really. He doesn’t know how to even get to Pakistan doesn’t know where it is on the map and winds up trying about 11 times unsuccessfully, including taking a sailboat from San Diego and washing up in Mexico thinking he’d made it before he actually manages a plane ticket and arrives in Pakistan on his God commanded quest. And true story, armed with nothing but a samurai sword and the increasingly impatient guidance of god he roams the streets of Pakistan without a clue seeking Osama Bin Laden. Now it’s possible you’ve seen a version of this movie on tv somewhere but I’m here to tell you that version is not a version I endorse in any way. It is not my version. After I finished and delivered my version, my editor and I were kicked out of the editing room. An editor whom I didn’t know and never worked with recut the movie without my permission at the producers request. I don’t blame the editor. I don’t even remember his name. It was a gig for him and not unusual in Hollywood for someone to be brought in to mangle and pervert a director’s vision of a movie at the behest of a power mad producer. But they changed everything. And for the worse. The themes. The ending. The music. The performances. They added a corny narration. I mean, they managed to change The entire point of the movie. All the choices that made the movie unique and special and honest to me. And to Nic Cage who put it all out there for the movie.
They turned the Army Of One that I made, a blackly comic metaphor about the meddling imperialistic ignorant greedy theocratic delusional violent America, America the hero in its own mind, that we all recognize and live in into a happy go lucky fable about the goodness and innocence of America. And that is bullshit.
