Shoutout to JoAcoNS for letting me know that there are unique scripts and voicelines for bringing the Guard with you to the first security turret - I didn't even know this was possible and it was very cool to show. That's the thing about Half-Life games - I always learn something new every time I play :) My favourite part of this chapter is how it serves as a mini training level for Freeman in using his weapons and dodging Vort lightning. In previous versions of the game, the .357 Magnum was acquired here as opposed to the Shotgun, which allowed players to cheese most fights just by the sheer stopping power of that gun (even the toughest enemies in this section, Vorts and Bullsquids, can be one-shot killed by shooting them in the right place). By swapping it out for the Shotgun like in HL1, and with the buffs to the Vorts, players now have to get close to them in order to effectively use the Shotgun, but they also run the risk of missing a shot when the Vorts strafe to the sides. Office Complex's tiled floors are also forever engrained in my head.
That security guard kick. I enjoyed this level alot back in the original HL1. Most of my time was spent on keeping the NPCs alive and herding them around their AI pathfinding. Then Black Mesa adds in the detail of them acknowledging your effort at the elevator shaft. It was nice. I see that you used mods to enhance the game, making it more realistic. There's another mod pack that adds in even more, called "Staff Overhaul", but I can't say anything about compatibility or bugs. A bonus point for trying to be cinematic or *realistic* to your gameplay would be to not reload every two shots. Or atleast reload when you're low. Though I would not blame you if you cannot fight back the urge.
I have grown pretty fond of this level as well. It's really one of the few chapters in the game where you fight generally easy enemies , compared to the run and gun action of WGH and later. The atmosphere and mood in this segment is great too. I believe the Staff Overhaul mods are still broken as of the Definitive Edition update - I can certainly check them again for WGH. Although I know that some of them actually change the level design as well, which I'm not sure if I'll cover in this playthrough. I hear ya on the reloading, it's a bad habit of mine. In my head I'm always trying to make sure I have enough ammo for the next encounter/enemy. Funnily enough, in Half-Life: Alyx, I was much more stingy on my reloads because ammunition is more scarce; every shot count so I actively avoided reloading as much as I could. But in Black Mesa, it's everywhere. I'll try to make an effort not to do it all the time, but no promises (especially with the MP5).
I felt bad leaving behind so many scientists, but I guess most of them are pretty stubborn about staying put. Honestly, they'd probably get gunned down by the HECU if they did try to reach the surface.
He might actually have more time to learn about the government cover-up at least than he would have if he had gone straight up and met the marines right off the bat
I love how in Half Life, the only incentive to save Barney was more ammo, but Crowbar Collective we're like "If Barney dies, no shotgun for you, fucker!"
It's been ages since I played HL1, but wasn't the first shotgun also located within that caged area? I recall that you definitely had to save the guard in that game as well to get the weapon.
@@Sexy_Nutella In the original, there was a shotgun just sitting outside on a crate with an ammo box. So you could pick it up without needing to save the Barney.
0:31 Actually it _is_ possible to save that guy from the Barnacle in BM too (at least in v1.0, which I made a video about): Don't trigger the scripted scene ("Hello? Who's there?"), go straight into the hole in the wall, bringing a junk item with you (there's several on the shelves beside the hole). If you're quick enough, you can have the Barnacle's tongue snag the prop instead of the scientist, giving just enough time to kill it before it spits out the inedible prop.
Interesting, I didn't even think of doing that (skipping the trigger outright). I'm sure it can still be done if that is the case - I'll update my description. Thanks a lot!
At 13:07 they way you control Gordon made it that he was actually running in trying to help and him reversing to see the dismeberberd(sorry if that is spell wrong)pieces makes him very human nice job :D
Another atmospheric segment. I always liked to keep the NPCs alive in this level. Huh, it could be a decent survivor game or series, just following a small group trying to get around Black Mesa, surviving, and getting more and more people tagging along. Some going ahead, scouting while others hang back in a safe spot, catching their breath, and stuff.
They could make some cool turn-based tactical game out of your concept! Even with RPG elements: guards are good for direct combat or first aid, while scientists are working on buffs/debuffs, fixing machinery, making traps, accessing restricted zones and so on. Add levelling and skills - weapon proficiency (restricted only for guards), negating crippling wounds and providing bonus damage against Xen lifeforms (biologists), making mines or gas grenades (chemists), assembling 'exotic' weapons (physicists). Some stealth missions - evading HECU units. Maybe even integrate everything into main plot, making protagonists one of groups supporting Gordon's rampage across complex and later Xen. Or simply focus on escaping Black Mesa.
i remember when i was playing through this section for the first time. sometime around 25:50 was when i realised that the clock had ticked past midnight, into 2023. it felt really weird that the new year had come, yet i was just doing something mundane like every other night
I find that games usually make a memory stick in my head as well. Not that it's a particularly memorable moment but I do fondly remember the good ole days where I too would just be chilling and spending a night gaming without a care in the world
There’s some unique dialogue with the first guard that you didn’t show. When you go near the window that shows the houndeye staring at the TV while he’s with you, he’ll exclaim “Holy shit, it’s a dinosaur!” at which point the houndeye will stand up and yell at the two of you. The guard’ll say “Back up! Back up!” followed by “Oh yeah, I’m asking for a raise.” after retreating from the window.

Thanks!! I stopped 8 months ago and started up again today and I had totally lost my memory of where I was. A few minutes with this vid and I was able to find my place.
Here's one tips for incoming chapters: *'We've got hostile': if you let scientist get injured by the first HECU soldier and than save him, he'll comment it. Also you can save first scientist from being exploded by tripmines and being killed by turret if you quickly break emergency glass near first blast door, as I remember he'll comment it. *'On a Rail': try to bring a Security guard with you on the rail cart in rocket silo - you'll get few new sequences; *'Surface Tension': after you'll jump to elevator in hangar filled with tripmines don't pick up Hive "hand", save a Security guard first and only after that pick "hand" up, guard will comment it with jokes (try a few reloading of save, you'll get different joke every time).
Some of these I'm aware of and will do, others I won't - for instance I already recorded WGH and let the scientists die, because I'm trying to make it seem as if it's Gordon's first time through these levels too. Saving the scientists require a lot of foresight, which doesn't seem realistic given his situation. However I will bring the guard with me in OaR. Maybe on the Hivehand jokes, seems weird that Gordon wouldn't pick it up right after landing on the elevator.
@@Sexy_Nutella It may be believed that Gordon didn't pick up Hivehand at first cuz he thought that it was just a gib or cuz of stress due to great number of explosives material.

Trivia: the second ceiling turret is inaccessible in the original game. However, if you noclip to the turret room, you will find a switch for the turret and another ladder. It seems the devs at Valve blocked off the path to the turret room in the final version. Clearly, Black Mesa knew about this path and chose to allow the player to access it.
The path is accessible in original HL1 as well. All you have to do is destroy the ceiling with the crowbar. In Black Mesa, this is not the case - the ladder is simply open.

And by the way, when you get to Gonarch's Lair don't forget to add this in the Trivia/Notes : "the healing pool were you kill the bullsquids is same area were Gordon was teleported during the Resonance Cascade" ! You will recognized it if you watch carefully !

From the Combine Overwiki: "the health takes 20% of the damage, while the suit takes 80%/2 of the damage". So the headcrab's 15 damage attack takes 15/5=3 points off my health, and 15*0.8/2 =6 points off my suit, which you can see reflected on the HUD (went from 100HP, 100 HEV to 97HP, 94 HEV).

Office Complex (Mesa Remix) by Joel Nielsen
Have they tweaked the controller controls yet? I remember it being a nightmare when I first downloaded.
Yabba! My icing! Gahhhh!
Black Mesa unfortunately has 100% less yabbas :(
so stupid that if Barney dies you have to just suicide and restart.
Will you do Unreal II next?
Sometimes I dream about cheese
does crouching increase accuracy in this?
Nope.
Don't think so, but it does help with my recoil.

At 9:38 let him just watch tv XD
Unfortunately if I bring the Guard with me he immediately shoots it, so I had to put it down myself :(
13:32 don't headcrabs take 15 hp damage on hard? How did he do only 9 hp
From the Combine Overwiki:
"the health takes 20% of the damage, while the suit takes 80%/2 of the damage".
So the headcrab's 15 damage attack takes 15/5=3 points off my health, and 15*0.8/2 =6 points off my suit, which you can see reflected on the HUD (went from 100HP, 100 HEV to 97HP, 94 HEV).
game doesn't work too good on Steam Deck.

Do they add controller support with the new update?
I don't believe so unfortunately.
