Cheers Chris. The brakes will forever be the reason I'm stressed, big down hills make me knees shake lol... Yea 2k subs, how long till we crack 3k... Numbers are def going up faster currently.
Feeling pretty spoiled...I just live how few people there are it's very common to be the only people on the beach... But Christmas is the busy beach season here so next Week the city's will be quiet, beaches, lakes and rivers full of people through till Feb
Love it when the kids take over the camera, great memories for you all. Good you've got the brakes sorted, there are some steep roads in the south as you will know
The thought of the steep mountains down south already cause me to have nightmares... I remember the truck has down hill assist so I need to turn that on, as well as using the gears a bit more, caravan brakes got a little warm on a 200m desent yesterday
We had the exact same thing happen!! Coming over the Gentle Annie Taihape to Napier road, scariest thing ever, had to pull over at the bottom of the hill for an hour as no brakes left on the ute as they were so hot, so we started just using the manual override as well. We contacted inside out who contacted WITI, we did the tests and turned out we had a faulty unit as alarm wasn’t working properly either, they sent us a new unit which is working much better but we haven’t done the calibration yet so might do that before attempting any more big hills.
Yea it's pretty scary when you can't stop, don't know how much down hill there is left and you can smell burning brakes, just such expensive gear if something went wrong with the ute or caravan or even worse an accident 🤔 Sooh says calibration is easy give Kev a call at witi
Great video mike was cool to meet you at the fieldays awesome camp locations but I really love the lake stuff to just has a different vibe. Poor hilus didn’t look happy. Good that you got that sorted
Hey mate was definitely cool to meet you as well. I came to find you at your stand but you must have been on a wonder around... the truck brakes were pretty sad after that, letting the caravan take the load for a bit
It’s not the easiest week standing there getting roasted in the hot sun certainly was different from the June date it normally is. You honestly make really great vids differently enjoy them and get inspired to go and visit these place. Just love this country how lucky are we!
Glad you figured out those brakes! I think the US lost a great opportunity when we allowed massive construction on our coastlines. The natural coasts there are beautiful. Wish we had more like that. And to have it all to yourselves! That doesn’t happen in the states either. But it does still crack me up that you think a 2.5hr drive is super far. PS - loved seeing Toby in the classic backwards tshirt, and tending a fire of course. Cool shelter the kids built.
Oh having untouched coast is priceless we are blessed to be able to have so much space and so few people... once we go to the South island it's going to get even quieter after the peak holiday season... there is only about 1 million people living down south and 4 million in the north island... the South Island is larger... the kids were very happy to hear you liked their shelter. 2.5 hours is coast to coast in some parts of new zealand its a long way to drive the width of the country lol...
spent a bit of time in this area over the years, had an Aunty who lived in Wairoa, also done Waikaremoana, ran the trail around the lake in a day once, and had several other adventures out there, a wild and Awesome place. Didn't stay in Wairoa this time around as we were off to visit family in napier and spent a bit of extra time in Gisbourne with another full time travelling family we'd met.
Yea thanks Kevin, they got a good run in yesterday on a steep desent out in southern Hawkes bay... hope yall are well bring on the south island adventures soon for ya'll
Hi Mike.I hope you get to have the brake seals checked after all that heat.I know some caravans have the Trojon brakeing system that the brakes automaticly come on when going down a hill then even out on the flat. You can also disengage them manualy if required.I never had any problems with the Trojon brakes on my caravans in the past.
Its a magic spot... First time i'd been to Mahia, I loved it. Thanks for watching team, I enjoy following along on the blogs and all the great photos you post. Hope you doing well.
One of my favorite families to watch. Love seeing all the places you go considering I'm from new Zealand the bottom of the South island. Definitely wanna travel with my son in the next few years.
Awww thanks, we are definitely living an interesting life at the moment. We are really excited about traveling down south. Especially the top around kaikoura Area and the very bottom, the bottom coast looks so nice and quiet... thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Great episode Mike! That rainbow came thru so bright even on camera... Great that soph' knee is healing! Can't wait to see some remote beaches in the next 1 🤙👍✌️❤️🇳🇿🇺🇲
Awwww. Cam your a star, our fresh water surfer in the snow... Soph's knee is doing so much better, we are currently parked up at a spot in bad weather, but there is no one here... Heaps of waves, but it's rough...
Awesome episode 🙂. That water looked so clear, stunning. Scary about the brakes. Good y’all got it sorted. Those cows definitely looked like they were going to eat you 😉.
Ha ha, those cows 🐄 😄 😆 we actually walked a lot closer to them, but then they started walking towards us in formation... hot brakes will forever be my biggest stress...
We camped at Oraka reserve when we went there, delicious pipis in the estuary. You coulda got your bait there! There was no one at lake tutira when we were there either. Scary cows, I’m scared of them too.
Ha ,ha, cattle just Inquisitive, my cattle would have licked yous to death, Some beautiful camp spots ahead , glad you got brakes sorted, I knew inot enough voltage to brakes, In Australia a lot of flat country, so I have two settings one for slow speed town driving, one for highway speed ,so no lock ups, Cheers Bevan 🤠❤️🦘🦘🇦🇺
yea brakes should be good now... Been watching a couple of videos, prob should use engine a bit more for slowing down as well... Brakes were smelling a little on a big decent today... New Zealand is full of big climbs and drops...
Hey there. There are some apps you can download like camper mate and wiki camps which you can purchase for a few dollars but has good info regarding free camps. Plenty of great low cost camping to be had
Memories! Where you were camped at Opoutama, when I was a young fella was a motor camp in a pine forest, called Blue Bay. Lots of memories of the Beach Store, the tavern and Snapper Rock. Was that Morere Hill where you got the hot brakes? It took me a while to get my brakes right. Initially the caravan brakes kept locking up whenever I stopped. Scary for me and anybody near me! So back to the old stomping ground in CHB!
Hey Owen, yep Opoutama, still a quiet spot to camp for free... Yes it was the Wharearatas' or something like that between mahia and gisbourne, steep hill for towing down... Brakes are much better now though... Yes we are in the old stomping ground....
Yea for one night 🌙 it was really nice... down south there is a kit of inland camping in the Alps... some super big mountains ⛰️ and lakes... we can't wait.
I really hate steep hills, up or Down, but mostly down, that feeling of not being able to stop is so scary, even the smell of hot brakes knowing things are over working makes me panic... 20% I couldn't imagine, we have the steepest street in the world in NZ at 19%, would never take a caravan on that.
*wow, imagine thinking you own the beach because you surf and cant surf where you want. From a creators point of view, this was a great way to start a video. Instant drama and tension.*
Yea I thought an entitled local... I prob would have needed to video my interaction with her lol... she ended up drifting about 800m down the beach any way
Thanks team for watching along with us, highs and lows... Smokey brakes and magical locations.
Another awesome video Leopards, glad you got the brakes sorted. Congratulations on cracking 2K subs as well. Look forward to your next one 👍👍

Beautiful spots. Really makes me want to explore the east coast one day with my family.
It's a great spot, a lot of really friendly people. it's just quite far out the way aye.
Beautiful part of the world ! Enjoy ...

Thanks mate our brakes are all electric so require a brake control unit... brakes are working well now.. definitely need to feel them working well
Greed video Mike that looked really good. We've been looking for freedom camping when we travel over.
Yea this is a great spot. What will ya'll be travelling in?
@@leopardsgowild We are renting a Camper van Self contain unit.

Had a few long term tenters there when we popped in, so we went back to opoutama... a little hard to get a large caravan in as well.

Some grades on BC, Canada highways are 15% grade. Logging roads can be over 20%. So towing a trailer/caravan are not the roads to go on.
