- Learn how to play Chris Stapleton's National Anthem in this detailed easy guitar lesson for beginners with Jason Carey!
I tuned into the NFL's Superbowl LVII and, to my pleasant surprise, Chris Stapleton performed a beautiful, tear-jerking rendition of our nation's Star Spangled Banner!!! This was a fine moment of performance for the singer-songwriter and one that defined what is capable as a soloist with an American Telecaster and a voice.
Only two instruments were used to perform this national anthem, and most of the chords were power chords - only two note chords! Most of us might have expected an acoustic guitar and some strumming but what we witnessed was pure easy going, American country tone, dripping with phaser and reverb.
I hope you like this guitar lesson and feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or comments.
Happy Picking,
Jason

Knew of Stapleton, heard a few songs before. But good lord that anthem was one of the best I’ve ever heard. I was Niagara Falls and my son looked at me shocked… I told him that’s what music does, buddy. It gets ya real deep, when ya don’t expect it!
Great tutorial!
Great to hear the story of your son appreciating the moment! Those memories last a lifetime. Well done.
You are most welcome for the tutorial, thank you for watching. Hey Chris, Happy Picking!
Hell ya!! You are the only person who makes complicated simple and correct. Even complicated simple. And simple correct. Get it, got it , good!!
Thanks buddy! Good to hear.
I love this tutorial
Thank you!
Awesome brother👍
Thank you so much bro. I appreciate it! 🇺🇸
Thanks very much for this. Nicely done!
Thank you Mr. Martin. Happy Picking! -Jason
Perfect...thanks
You are most welcome.
you're my hero for this. I was wanting to try and learn this and this is going to be way faster than doing it by ear myself! That 5 chord up on the seventh fret with the little hammer on thing is a very signature Chris Stapleton thing it seems. He does something like that in a lot of songs where he's in a sort of drop D tuning. "Whiskey and You" and "Either Way" both have parts that sound very similar.
Yeah, I love the way Mr. Stapleton presents his musical ideas in a digestible way. Just super clean and talented. Thank you for this feedback, it is appreciated. Oh, and have fun with the song!
Happy Picking,
Jason
Thanks mate!!!!
You are most welcome!! Happy Picking!
I’ve been waiting for this!
Yeah, many of us have been waiting for a moment like this, for sure! Awesome to hear this, Sweet! Enjoy it and let me know if you have any questions. Happy Picking!
Great lesson. I googles the tuning on this and came straight to your video. Excellent job!
Thank you John. I am working out a video right now on how I emulated his guitar tone in this session. Enjoy playing this, I found that I got better tone with lighter weight right hand approach. Happy Picking, Jason
Thought it sounded a bit bass like, thanks.😀
You're welcome Trevor! Have some fun with this one! See you around, Jason
Nice work dude!I knew as soon as he hit the first note it was drop d. he does that a lot, but I was like “dang” that sounds low”. As soon as I got home and picked up a guitar i realized he was tuned down half a step. I’ve gone back and listened to many National Anthems, and his blows most, if not all out of the water. Simple with some soul always works!
Awww yeah! He pours it on like honey, and the down tuning works well for him! Great, American male vocal tone. Thanks for chiming in Steven. Happy Picking, Jason
What if, instead of drop Db, you used open Db tuning?
I like it!

What effects do you have on?
Hi Chris! I am using both phase and reverb. I am going to make a quick video this morning detailing what was used. I did not surgically deduce that Mr. Stapleton was using a flange or phase, or what type of reverb, etc... it just sounded to me, on my initial impression, and initial impressions in the audio world usually work well, that he was using a phase shifting tool on the guitar.
Also, in this video I used an old pig nose amp mic'd with a 57. It's a pretty cool sound with the Fralin pickups in this guitar. Keep an eye out for the vid later this morning, ok?
Happy Picking, Jason

Chrous and flanger seem to be a staple for his tone. Lol. Get it staple. Tone. Hehehhehe
@@Chris-ik3on LMAO🤣 Great tone. Awww man, just a brilliant performer.
I think you personally clean it up better then chris did (big fan of chris and a guitsr player ) but his tone in the performance was very ehh and out of tune compared to yours
Thank you kindly. I definitely had ability to scrutinize the tone a little more, being in a studio setting. I wonder what the ambient noise presser level was at Super Bowl 53? Thank you for checking in, Jason
