  • Do you have a Caique Parrot that is Biting, Screaming, and on Hormone overload? Can Parrot Hormones be Dangerous? A hormonal caique can be dangerous to the Human, its self, or other birds! Twice a year, my male caique parrot Puffy becomes dangerous to other birds in the bird room and me! When Puffy Caique becomes hormonal, it's confusing for him and painful. Puffy my caique parrot's Gonads gets so large inside his body; it pushes on his organs, causing pain and makes him super aggressive. Poor Puffy cannot help how or what he feels. My Cockatoo Victoria becomes hormonal October - May every year. Many birds become very sick or even die from being egg bound. I think the nesting season is hardest on caiques and cockatoos. It's almost impossible to keeps these wild animals happy and healthy in captivity. I have a few tips to share that can help you and your caique parrot during the nesting season.

    I love watching your videos with my caique Westley. He's 6 and I've had him since he was weaned. His hormones kicked in at 3 years old and it was a major adjustment for us both but we got through it with lots of love, patience and understanding. I don't have a caique but my little Canary winged parakeet Clover is coming up on 9 months so I know this hormone issues are coming down the pike. You're such a great parrot ambassador! Thank you!!!! Scott has always wanted a caique. And he had me thinking about taking in an elderly rescue. Weeeeeell after hearing the noise, I now know I might not be able to tolerate that. So, they are like budgies in as far as the noise being constant yammering? I cam take scream sessions. But not constant noise no matter how soft. Everyone's different, ya know? Sigh. I'm soooooo disappointed... but glad now that I know the truth and to think twice before jumping into one. I think I might walk away twitching now from watching their wild shenanigans.

      Oh man! I made this video targeting people who've seen cute caique hoppy videos. So many people buy them because of the cute videos and hit with shock! Honestly an elderly caique would have less energy and your home is wonderful. You are an amazing bird family. The screeches are high but every bird is an Individual. My experience having 4 caiques in my lifetime they are definitely energizer bunnies but once again every bird is an Individual.

  • @Flufferz626
    @Flufferz626 5 лет назад

    Thanks for this video, I have been researching caiques for about a year now. It is often hard to find testimonies of the harder, difficult parts of owning one. I appreciate this, and maybe in the next few months I will take the leap into companionship. Especially since there are two boys I have been interacting with (their names are Merry and Pippin) frequently at this one rehome center nearby and they're likely approaching hormonal age (I think they are about 4 years old, they are brothers). They are darlings, though it is waaay different than interacting with them 24/7.
    I might hold back another year or so for a different solitary one, because I don't want to separate them because they grew up together and weren't ever separated. And dunno if I'm ready for the investment of a duo, unless it makes it easier with these particular ones.

My black headed caique suffered from an undiagnosed hormonal imbalance that turned my lovely companion into a terrorist who couldn't be out of the cage in the house. I had to walk him and be with him on a 3 foot stick in the front yard for the better part of a year til we had to return him too Omar's exotic birds after 18 months. Very informative and reinforcing about enlarged gonads hormonal behaviour. Thanks for the dietary, activity (foraging), and sleep modification you have used to manage your birds' hormonal behaviour. Someone suggested to me to use camomile tea and lettuce stalk as a calmer. But I haven't tried yet. I didn't know about the sexual thing with the beak. There is not much place left to touch a bird. Lol. I am grateful for this opportunity to learn more. Do you use any special lighting in your bird room?

    I was suggested to buy a caique as my first bird,the only thing I asked my breeder was for an affectionate bird that wouldn't be too too loud. I ended up with a 3 or 4 months baby caique that I kept feeding with a syringe for a couple of months. Thing is he/she is quite aggressive and pretty loud, even when is calmer doesn't like to be petted or touched too much. I'm trying everything but the fact that prefers to be with my mother doesn't make things any easier...

    • @lexburen5932
      @lexburen5932 4 года назад +1

      got the wrong bird for a first bird. If the bird prefers to be with your mother, it means you are doing something wrong. And still really hand feeding with a syringe?, when the bird is already couple months old is not the way to go. Should give her normal food in metal trays inside the cage. They need vegetables and fruits as well every day. And if the bird is aggressive with you, it means you do, or have something done in the past wich the bird did not like. So for you to recover your relationship with your bird. You need to find out WHY the bird prefers to be with your mom, what does your mom with the bird you do not. And you need to establish a positive bond with your bird, that can be done through touch training. Think from a birds perspective, Why should the bird like you, what is in for the bird to be with you. rule number one : never push anything through your bird it does not want. it'll make everything worse in the future. for a first bird a cockatiel would be the best option. Caiques are for people with advanced bird knowledge. touch training : ruclips.net/video/j-atQv2UIds/видео.html its a relative easy thing to do

    i am highly interested in getting a caique but ive very little bird experience, ive read up on these birds a lot and watched many of your and other's videos, but as someone with a lot of time and patience, i think it still might be okay to get one. i wonder if their behavior might be slightly different when you only have one bird? ive seen a few videos of people who only had one and they seemed a little more quiet (though of course still noisy overall!) and naturally hormones are gonna be troublesome. these videos are great, im still very much considering caiques and reading up on them. i will absolutely not get a bird until i feel i am ready, and that could certainly be a long time yet!

    LOOOL Puffy tries to hide on the back of your head after becoming top bird all of a sudden😂. He's like OMG she's gonna kill me for taking her place🙈 what really comforted me in this video is what you said about how their hormonal situation will cause them to just bite without a warning and for us not to take it personal. Sometimes it's so hard, when I get attacked after spending a lovely day with my goffin, who is a bit like a caique. He's had his 3rd hormone implant now, which they have given him every 9 months in the past years. And it really works. It gives of a testosterone blocker very gradually, and after the 3rd implant they said to wait a while to check if the changes in behaviour and hormonal activity have become permanent. He's definitely attacking me less, and his bites have become less deep and maiming. He's 25 now, and has been with me for 23 years. In the last 7 years he became increasingly violent towards me. When he's staying with my friend, who's a parrot mum too, he's extremely well behaved and quiet. 🤦🏻😂🤦🏻😂🐧🤖I love your vids, they give me strength and love. Bless you, angel💜💜💜

Shes biting us both at least once a day - breaking skin. She is desperately trying to hump my hand and get my fingers under her wings. When i resist and only offer to scritch her head she screams incessantly. Her aggression towards my husband is the worst. She dive bombs him and really attacks his head. Its crazy to see the two of us trying to defend him against 1 little bird. I try to explain to him that its not personal but i know his feelings are hurt. Im going to try your suggestions about reducing fat/nuts and increasing her sleep. Thanks again.

    well,. I believe its time for my Caique,.. he is almost 3,.. today is the second time he bit me in the 3 years,. I thought it was because we where introducing a Senegal to the household,.. no other birds or animals in the house just Chico the Caique and now after one week Rebel the Senegal who is 6,.. what is worse,. after he bit me I put him in his cage for a couple hours (which normally cures his attitude) and when I went to let him out,.. he became very aggressive again... trying to hunt for my right hand... to bite it!!! ,.. observing him now.. he is puffed up and its like 75* in the house.. So my question is this... HOW LONG WILL THIS LAST???

    Wish I would have watched a video like this before I bought my guy 8 years back and not been so naive, never having had a bird before. Recently gave him up as the noise and hormonal behaviour became too much for me after all those years and being autistic didn't help, but he came from a pet shop I used to work at and we hit it off, but once at home I didn't have the coping strategies for his behaviour. Never loved a pet as much as him though and still miss him every day. I think parrots when not hormonal etc CAN be amazing companions but they really don't make good pets in my opinion.

    Oh my goodness!! My poor puffy bird!!😥 I literally just uploaded a video the other day of my Moluccan, Sky, laying her first egg!! She’s 14yrs old and had never laid an egg before, so this was a BIG surprise for us!! We only have one bird, no mate, no nesting materials in her cage, and the only time she’s able to *nest* or “snuggle” in anyway is when she’s with me on the couch or in my bed late at night, etc. (which is where she ended up laying the egg) It’s crazy how bad the hormone levels have been for our beautiful birds this season. Hoping it gets better my way and yours!! Love you guys, Puffy, Baby, & Maui😘

      Poor Sky!! 14yrs and then a surprise! Hope she starts feeling better soon. You must be having hot weather like us. This year has been horrible for hormones! I feel so badly our birds!

      Parrot Playhouse - I know!!😩 & yes the weather has been very warm here!! It’s just starting to cool down a little bit now. We’ve had a few mornings in the 40’s-50’s but most days it’s still hitting 75-80°🤭 I’m hoping by Christmas it will have cooled down enough to where it actually FEELS like winter😂 But here in good ole GA it normally doesn’t get too cold. We might have a few freezing days (or below) come late January-February but that’s about it. An we only get snow every 3-4 years or so ☹️❄️⛄️ I’m hoping it snows this year though! We haven’t had any in a while an I’d love to bring some snow inside to see how Ms.Sky reacts to it😄 Surprisingly I’ve never let her see snow before, I guess because we get it so rarely, so it’ll be fun to see what she does☺️ I hope mr.Puffy man gets those hormones in check soon👌 love to you all♥️

    Good video but i noticed that maui seemed to try biting the one on your left hand when you moved her too close to him when your hands moved with your expressions. Not really his fault. But god video. You are a great parrot mom

      April Martinez Thank you! Maui trys to boss Bailey around. Maui and Bailey's cages in real life are completely opposite in the bird room. None of my caiques get along. I filmed everyone together so I could capture what life could be like having caiques. Maui is a sweet bird when he is one on one. I had to keep raising my hand to brush the hair out of my eyes. Filming with caiques can be challenging.:))

      I was literally raised with 2 black head caiques, they lived close to 30 year til they passed away.
      I can tell you that Maui is having so much fun trying to pick the other one. This is my first video of you that I watch and this brings me such memories... 😔🐦🐦
      Still have an Amazon parrot, she must have like 45-50 years, she is way too different/calmer than the caiques, I am blessed to have had the chance to cohabit with such incredibly amazing beings.

    My jardines is 10 months old and he has recently started smacking his beak on his cage when my sister tries to pic him up and he will bite her till she pics him up then he stops , he has tired to feed me by throwing up on my hands or mouth , me gives me kisses like crazy and tires to get into my mouth but I don’t let him go into my mouth 😆 does he think I’m his girl friend ??? Should I stop cuddling him so much ? Or do you think it’s okay for him to act that way with me

    • @ParrotPlayhouseChannel
      @ParrotPlayhouseChannel  6 лет назад +3

      Flying birdy Does your sister give a reaction when your baby parrot start smacking the cage or when he bites her? A reaction of laughing, shrinking or anything? A reaction can be a reward to a parrot and cause them to continue this biting Behavior. He also can become territorial of his cage. What she could do is offer a treat and have him step up on a perch for her when he is in the cage. This way he will not have the opportunity to bite her and she can place him in a neutral spot that he doesn't feel he has to protect. Biting is a learned behavior. When he starts to regurgitate for you put him down and give him something else to distract him. You do not want him to think you are his mate. He will become very territorial of you and attack other people in your home. It's cute when they are babies but when they get older it becomes serious. I have seen many birds given up because they are attacking other family members in the home. Thank you for your awesome question!

    • @flyingbirdy2658
      @flyingbirdy2658 6 лет назад +2

      Parrot Playhouse she does laugh at him and just ignores the biting or if he gets really aggressive on his cage she pics him up with a towel . I will tell her to use a treat to have him step up next time . Thanks for the advice I will use this next time

    • @ParrotPlayhouseChannel
      @ParrotPlayhouseChannel  5 лет назад +4

      Caiques can pick they people and consider them their mates. This is a totally normal behavior for a 4 yr old sexually matured caique. You need to become the only person in the house that give your caique treats. It's also important your husband doesn't encourage nesting behavior. I have a video that talks about how to pet and not pet your parrot. It would be a good one for your family to watch. Keep me updated.

      It usually happens when they turn 3. My caiques with all my knowledge still bite me at times. It's important to become educated on this species. Try fostering a caique from a rescue? Hands on experience is the best!

      I raised Puffy and his brother Pierre together. Pierre passed from cancer last year. We miss him very much. They did well until becoming sexually mature. Puffy started attacking
      Pierre. I would have to separate them 2 months out of the year. All birds are an individual and need space at times. No way to tell if they will be compatible in the future. You just have to take it day by day with parrots.

    • @ParrotPlayhouseChannel
      @ParrotPlayhouseChannel  6 лет назад

      Cassandra Miranda it is different for many species of parrots. Although this year it seems to last the entire year. It will start for cockatoos in January and many other parrots. Of course Spring it will be full blown. For conures and Amazons August can be hard. It just depends where you live, environment and weather conditions. I always treat my bird like it's your round in the bird room.

    • @cassandramiranda721
      @cassandramiranda721 6 лет назад +1

      Parrot Playhouse Thank you! So you would say a caique is fine on its own it doesn't need another caique as a playmate? Because I have one now and wasn't sure if I should get him a playmate since it seems in other videos and articles I read that they are better at play fighting with each other.

    • @ParrotPlayhouseChannel
      @ParrotPlayhouseChannel  6 лет назад

      Cassandra Miranda that is a hard question to answer. Every bird is an individual. Its hard to know if they are going to get along and choose each other as friends. If you do decide to get another bird get a cage as well. Plan for just in case if they do not get along. I know Bailey my black-headed caique wishes she was the only bird in the room. She hates sharing me with the other birds.
