I have replaced the rear shocks twice on my 2012 Ford Escape, and I never jacked it up or took the wheels off. There is plenty of room to do it without those two steps. I also did not entirely remove the quarter panel trim panels. I loosened them part way and held them out of the way with logs or 2 x 4s. Also, I used an impact wrench to remove and reinstall that top and bottom nuts. An impact wrench is fast enough to prevent the shaft from spinning. This video makes this job a lot more work than it has to be.
I've changed hundreds of shocks and I can tell you that the impact wrench won't always do the trick. But yeah he didn't need to remove the wheel. But the trim panel should be removed all the way to prevent damage.
You should start doing your videos so people can do this easier
I’m so grateful for these tutorial videos, quick, concise and professional, saved me a lot of f around find out time lol, thank you guys!
Hi, I am looking for the bolt size to replace the rear shock on a 2008 Mazda Tribute.
Great commentary. Well done.
My bottom bolt was so tight threaded that I used 2 breaker bars, 3/4 and 1/2 inch, and the half inch one was wedged against the ground, and flexing the whole way off, till the other side, just rounded the head of the bolt. Not hardly even rusty, what the heck. Using so much force I was starting to lift the axle up, with the truck weight on it.
I need you guys to do the rear wheel bearings on the same vehicle
Do you think the socket sizes talked about would be the same for a 2006 Ford Escape?
we have a loud noise of a left rear shock bouncing against the plastic cover that you removed in your video. What would you suggest as a remedy to quiet it. The LOUD thumping sound started about a month ago. Or do we need a part. Our Escape 2010 has 321Km, and it runs beautifully.
Yeah sounds like the shock is blown and it's banging around in there
You don't need to remove the panels completely and also don't need to remove the wheel thats why that bolt has that tab on the one side mine was pretty rusty all i did is spray it with pb blaster really good
I already use an impact wrench, at 70 years old, I'm not doing anymore work than needed
Remember if you’re reusing old bolts not to torque to spec go a little less then torque speck sheared many used bolts torquing to spec because of the threads being stretched from the first toque just my experience
Thank you.
Whats the length? For the 2008 escape shock absorber
Why is he not using a impact?
A 1:09 what are those silver buttons for by the rear seat belt after you lift the seat
Don't you want them adjusted at ride height?
As long as the the vehicle is sitting on the jack stands with it's weight on it it's basically loading the suspension so it's ok the way he's doing this ! Just don't leave the suspension hanging when you do shocks or control arms & such then tightening them because the suspension is then unloaded which will cause issues with the rubber bushings being tightened in the unloaded position which will cause them to fail prematurely especially if it's a control arm . Remember to not over tighten the nut on the top shock mount as they can compress to a point of cracking if too tight so just snug them up good but don't over do it. Only reason I am watching this is my brother has a Escape & wanted new rear shock for it as one of his Christmas presents & I wanted to see how much other parts had to come off like all of this interior had to before I put them in lol. It almost takes longer getting the interior trim & panels off then actually changing a shock . These guys for some reason don't ever use a impact gun on anything which would speed up the change out of parts plus it's less work & stress on your hands & in a repair shop time is money so you don't see very many techs using breaker bars & hand tools when doing suspension work at all unless necessary !
Pete Loomis I think they just use hand tools to show people who don’t have power tools
@@jacobwilson1699 Exactly this. There's been a couple videos I've watched before I had an impact gun where I threw my hands up in the air when I saw them grab one
You don't have to remove the whole panel nor remove the wheel. If you just remove from rear truck area part way it's plenty of room.
Well gee mine are just stuck on... cant even get the bottom nut off and both collars are broken on the other side that spins with a half hex half flat bolt head.
How I know the shocks need to replace
I hate that doing these kinds of fixes makes it seem like you're about to break something at any moment
You only did one side.
