We've had this slippery, dangerous, (and ugly!) golden oak staircase in our house since moving in nearly 10 years ago. Installing a stair runner is something I always wanted to do but never had time. All it takes it one slip, though....! I decided to find some inexpensive, yet cute modern stair runners to install. I also painted the stairs white for a fresh look! I absolutely love it! I'm still not sure about how (or IF!) I want to paint the balusters. What do YOU think? Paint them or leave them natural?
A big thanks to Arrow Fastener for sponsoring this project! Be sure to check out their awesome tools and tell them Thrift Diving sent you!

Do you think paint the bluster blue, is to much? Or maybe a tint of a darker color of wood?
Love it.... in Puerto Rico everything is in concrete and is not that easy to install anything, even to hang a picture on the wall we need a lot of things... God Bless...

Yes, believe it! As much as I love and appreciate wood, I do know that sometimes a nice coat over it changes the whole entire thing. That's what I was going for. This color of wood is very outdated, though. And to change the color of the wood when my house has this same golden oak wouldn't have matched well. So the best option was to paint it. Thanks for watching, though! I appreciate it!

Me too. And I'd stain them dark. But I have painted PLENTY of wood, and stairs are probably about the only place I would go dark. I also would have painted the entire stair for the next homeowner.

I really like what you did so much. Everyone has their own opinion on your renovation, but it's your home and you need to enjoy it. A few year's ago we installed a ironing board into our bedroom wall, because our house is a 1925 craftsman, those are details that were in those types of houses, well our realtor, told us we need to paint the wood, or remove it because Oak colored wood is out dated, well I'm going to leave it for the new owners to decide I hope they leave it and appreciate the hard work we have done to make this craftsman house, what it is with all the mission styles and built ins.

I pulled mauve shag carpeting off of my stairs and underneath was beautiful (worn and nail holes) wood. I filled holes, sanded and refreshed the wood stain. I also didn't have the time or expertise to install a runner, so we hired a professional to install a beautiful runner and it turned out incredible. Our home is a craftsman-style and the wood throughout the house is part of what a craftsman is. Your stair work is an improvement and I agree, those stairs looked dangerous.

I really wanted to do something like this in my house but I have two sets of stairs and they both are windy so I had to hire professionals to do it for us. The trend is ditching carpet for wood floors. Most newer wood floors are not solid wood, only wood laminate. Your stairs are likely solid wood. The problem is with so much wood, emergency rooms are seeing more injuries. Children and if course, older people are having serious injuries falling on hard floors. I would have put new paint on the side trim, refinished the wood and then put the runner on. My parents and grandparents had brass bars in place that held the runner in place. Trends change so do it to your taste. When refinishing or painting, do every other stair so they would still be usable.

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  4 года назад +1

Yep, I actually PREFER to see the dirt! I know that sounds odd, but it's a visual reminder to vacuum the stairs. I have left my stairs unvacuumed longer than it should have, and it was gross. With white stairs, I am more likely to vacuum more often. That's a good thing in my book. LOL. As for chipping, this isn't true if you finish them properly. Plus, no one is walking on the sides of the stairs, so there is no reason for it to chip. Unless, of course, you're painting them white and not covering them up. Then I could see how it would chip due to all that traffic going up and down.

I'm with punkypine on this one! The wonderful thing is that it's just paint. In a few years if I ever decide I want to stain them, stripping off the paint and sanding them down would be an option. But I doubt I would go that route. They were worn and not beautiful and I like the fresh look. I did feel the balusters were beautiful and in good condition so that is what was stopping me from painting those.

Looks wonderful! I don’t have stairs in my house (I was adamant about having a single story when I was house searching) but if I did I would paint them to look like book spines.
Did you ever do a video about changing the color of your closet from gray to something more girly?

    This is a true DIYer!
I wish HGTV would give her, her own show instead if hiring some interior designer whos decked out from head to toe and hasn't even held a hammer before and clearly not even interested! I always skip their shows! I always watch people who are actually in there doing the job!

They ended up looking great. I'd leave the banisters just as they are, but that's just me. For now, that is. My mind changes with the wind. LOL

Mistake to paint the treads. Just paint the risers. Add runner and stair rods. Bannister brackets should be mounted to a stud, not drywall.

I think they turned out great! Painting just the risers or doing what you did made a big difference. I wouldn't touch the banister. I think that stained wood probably helps tie in the hardwood floors on the top and bottom of the stairs, huh? Great Video!

Thank you!! I've decided to keep the banisters. You're right. The rest of the wood in the house is this orange oak and it does tie in nicely. I appreciate your kind words! :)

This came out nicely. I always used to think stair runners looked outdated but they're growing on me. This pattern is really nice. If you paint the rail and balusters, you should consider using gel stain. I saw a few RUclips videos and it seemed A LOT more DIY friendly and less messy than traditional stain. I don't think you have to sand anything and it would be a nice contrast to the painted wood. I also have that color oak on mine and I'm eventually going to stain them...
That is once I get off my lazy butt...
And finish the other projects I've started first...
And don't get distracted watching your videos over and over in envy lol

Beautiful, well done job as always! I do think the orange oak is distracting now though. I would go with white paint, in a semi-or high gloss paint for the bannister and the rail you reattached to the wall. Always had glossy white trim in my house and raised two boys but it was pretty easy to keep clean .
Just love your projects-I love how calm you are working! Thank you for great videos❤️
