      I never hear anybody talk crap about the enthusiast keyboard vendors unless it's drop or glorious lol. and I feel like it's because they're bigger companies. I've had really bad experiences with a few vendors and people downvote the shit out of me on reddit if I complain. Like terrible quality control issues with boards that i waited forever for and spent a lot of money on which had cracks, warping and missing parts and bc of the small batch shit and limited supply they could only offer a partial refund or wait another three months to maybe get it fixed or a replacement. They should've turned it away at the factory. Same thing with switches. I understand that people feel like they need to protect these companies because they're small but they really just want the feeling of having an exclusive item, no matter the crap quality or service and that turns a lot of people off of the whole thing. Imagine getting into this for the first time, spending a lot of money on something you took a lot of time researching, getting a crap product, receiving crap service and the getting told by enhusiast online that you're wrong lol. But I see people upvote the smallest mistake from glorious or drop all the time. If they really want to evolve and be more inclusive, they need to call these "high quality" kb companies on their shit.

    • @notthottie9882
      @notthottie9882 3 года назад +13

      @@rks5457 I've actually had the same experiences. In terms of customer support, nothing has come close to glorious. They have sent me multiple items (for free) to fix issues if I had them. I'm very out of date with the keyboard community as I grew out of touch after getting some rather disappointing products from certain vendors and it is surprising to hear people are now shitting on glorious. People used to look at them with respect so I'm curious what changed.

    • @rks5457
      @rks5457 3 года назад +44

      @@notthottie9882for me it all boils down to these uber enthusiasts feeling like their exclusive hobby is being encroached upon by bigger companies. It's funny that these guys will act like they encourage novices to join the hobby but in reality, the nature of the current enthusiast keyboard scene has been built upon exclusivity and opinions about what feels and sounds good. It's like these uber enthusiasts feel threatened that the stuff they paid a lot of money for and waited a long time for is going to become not so exclusive and expensive because of these big companies. Their only defense is that the quality is not as good but that is really bs in my opinion as I've had terrible experiences with quality, like you and prob many others who don't speak up bc they will get downvote by the aforementioned enthusiasts. They talk about the gmmk pro's gasket system being a problem because of the standoffs that support the pcb but their only issue with it is that gasket systems with more flex sounds better, which is completely subjective and ignores the fact that a flexing pcb is NOT good for durability. And durability and build quality is something that these enthusiasts overlook it seems due to the fact that we typically own and use several boards and flip them quickly. And that's typically why we never see long term reviews.
      People keep saying this is an entry or gateway keyboard but they really don't know that the likelihood of someone buying this just to buy several more keyboards later is not very high currently. They only see people who are into the hobby and not the ones who want 1 really good in stock keyboard and will use that for every day for many years. Which is the reason why companies like glorious and drop who both want to expand and become large high quality keyboard companies take durability into consideration.
      I just feel like a lot of these keyboard companies and vendors need to figure out the future. Because currently there are a lot of problems that are not being talked about. Another issue is the Gmk keycaps market. These "designers" are screwing over the consumer hard and they know it. So much so that a "designer" is trying to sell a "meme" set of blank white keycaps. And of course these uber enthusiasts (I call em typebeasts) are falling head over heels for something you can buy for $20 and get right now. These "designers" are basically grabbing cash for something anybody can do with Gmk. and they do this preorder/group buy garbage which leaves literally no risk for the "designer" and all the risk for the buyer. I digress but I love nice keyboards but the community is worse than any hypebeast/street wear/air Jordan/Nike community out there in terms of ripping people off and providing bad quality and customer service. At least clothe can be seen as art inherently but enthusiast keyboards are seen as both art and higher quality but that's not the case for most of these overhyped, limited products.

    Nice to see you point out the QC issues that often (Nearing always) go uncovered by any form of warranty in the GB community. Not that I don't understand why GBs don't have warranties, it just wouldn't make sense for limited productions. However I do feel that it is very positive having a relatively high quality production board for the vast majority of consumers who might otherwise decide to commit to a group buy, only to encounter potential issues that they don't know how to correct themselves.
    And I hope that this will leads to further improvements in the keyboard scene, especially that Glorious learns from all the feedback they're getting on the GMMK Pro for future models. Because all-in-all, despite what some actors in the keyboard community might say, this is a really good entry into the medium-range keyboard scene.

    • @zol479
      @zol479 3 года назад +1

      There's a big unreliability factor for the vast majority of custom GB keyboards but are largely ignored when talking about how the gmmk pro isn't perfect, as if they forget it's a $170 board with a much higher reliability factor and customer support.

    We need more big players to make enthusiast grade products to bring prices down. Some of these group buys not only have insane costs of entry, the lead times are pretty bad too.

    • @datjp
      @datjp 3 года назад

      I mean I disagree and agree at the same time. While the wait times are yes, not the most friendly and or convenient, especially as a surprise to beginners, it isn’t necessarily bad. You have to keep in mind that people running GBs and the like are a part/from of the community itself and thus are not being backed up by a larger corporation and or company that can source parts and the like much easier while maintaining a quality product, unlike Razer, Corsair, Glorious.
      This hobby is built on these prices and wait times, you’re asking a lot from such a niche and still growing and or newborn community. It’s growing rapidly, which is a positive. Your expectations in my honest opinion is somewhere where it shouldn’t be. You’re simply expecting to much. Alongside this. Companies like Razer, Corsair, and Glorious exists simply for this matter, to bring in stock and affordable products for the mass of consumers while GB runners and the like are not; they are focused on the mechanical keyboard community itself and thus don’t need to occupy their time on pleasing the masses. They are more focused on producing a quality product while improving said product through the community whilst bringing their rich and novel ideas into reality.

    • @jlu
      @jlu 3 года назад +3

      @@datjp I don't think expectations of the masses are misplaced, if the MK community wants to grow, it must adapt to providing more stock more often. How do you expect newcomers to react when they hear that a keyboard is quadruple the price of a normal retail board and you have to wait 6 to 12 months to receive it? Worse yet, what if someone finds a board or keycaps they like but turns out the GB ended 2 years ago?
      I am glad that Glorious is challenging the GB model, which is clearly unsustainable but currently exists because of the nature of custom MK community as it stands. People talk about art, care, and effort by small GB runners but how can you expect newcomers to understand that when they can't get their hands on anything?

    I see that you don't quite like the exploded look of the arrow keys. But, as a blank keyboard user, I must say that an exploded 75% layout makes us able to use the otherwise impossible 75% (due to the lack of function keys spacing and arrow keys).

    I feel like this is the most reasonable GMMK pro review being that there aren't overly high standards for a kb at this price point, but it isn't too optimistic as there are still some glaring flaws that need to be pointed out. Good review!

  • @rks5457
    @rks5457 3 года назад +3

    Now this is the review people actually need to see. Especially the part showing the differences with foam and no foam. I've seen too many reviews sound comparing the gmmk pro with stock foam to another board that doesn't have foam, gasket mount etc like the ID80 just because it's 75%. Also failing to mention that the standoffs will make the board more durable and most new people getting their first enthusiast keyboard want durability. A flexing pcb is NOT durable, it just sounds marginally better. Imagine how pissed a new consumer would be if the relatively expensive keyboard they just bought had some keys stop working because the hotswap sockets shot out from a flexing pcb? These types of people are going to want to daily this thing and will use it wayyy more than us enthusiasts who have several keyboards and barely put each through it's paces. And these potential kb enthusiasts would wonder why nobody talks about durability or long term tests when it comes to keyboards..

    Mines just got in an hour ago, and while I am happy with the results. there is something that isn't being brought up: the incredibly tight screws. This board is supposed to be a modifiable product, but the screws are so uncomfortable tight, you risk stripping the tops of them. After replacing the stabilizers, I've stripped 2 screws: a case screw and a screw in the middle of the board. Those two screws alone were so difficult to remove. I think an easy remedy is to have the board come disassembled, similar to many keyboard kits in the enthusiast market. That way, we don't have Goku in the factory tightening these keyboard screws.

    Great review.
    I just got mine last week and after the first reviews came out I was really worried about the quality but I’m actually impressed with what I got despite the shortcomings.
    The design is plain and nothing to write home about but with a few mods I think this board has a lot of potential to be a good board.
    I don’t think it will tame the custom market because the snobs are all going to scoff at spending less than $300 for just the board itself with a company like GMMK. I do hope the board sells well and I do hope they make revisions and improve on what’s there now. If they could also do it in a way that original buyers of the first revision could just buy upgrade parts then that would be great.
    Don’t get me wrong there are some really nice custom boards out there but it’s become so much more about jumping on a group buy and having something no one else has rather than just having what you want and what you need. Oh man, I spent $400 on a group buy and then bought a rare set of key caps for $400 more. Then I spent another $200 on a custom cable and switches so I win at keyboards. The GMMK pro wanted to bring custom end features to the mainstream for a more consumer friendly price and while they weren’t 100% successful, they had a good start and I applaud their first effort.

    A very serious warning to anyone considering buying this keyboard for the RGB. There is a dirty little secret that reviewers are not discussing. And that is, the readability via the top of the keys as it relates to the RGB light. It's extremely DIM. On a scale of 1 to 10, it's a sold 1 and even that is being generous. The RGB light coming out and from under the keys is fine. If you are in a dark / low light setting like I am and like to read the numbers, letters, etc on your keyboard, forget it. You won't be able to. I bought the silver GMMK Pro, silver switches, puddin caps, a custom red knob, a red usb-c cord, dropped over $300 and was left speechless when I plugged in the keyboard. I really love this keyboard but I am not one of those types that doesn't care about RGB. I am. So I am taking everything back to Microcenter next week. I am hoping that Glorious can address this issue by releasing VERY bright RGB switches that match HyperX's mechanical keys.

The screws came out easily when I took it apart, the spacing on my aftermarket cherry compatable key caps was spot on, no visible curvature or bending in the PCB board, software and RGB works fine also. Im not too crazy about really loud boards so I kept both foams in, Did the triple gasket and tempest tape mods, got the glorious panda (unlubed) switches, lubed up the switches and stock stabs with some krytox and it actually types, feels and sounds perfect to my preference. removal of the foams can help suit your preference but I have a baby at home and combined with working in an office setting, a loud KB isn't always going to cut it for me but this config worked great and I have no complaints about this keyboard. Great video ! Very well done.

    Alright hold up.... you're saying that I can actually get my hands on a decent case, hotswappable board etc, with a volume knob and F-row... for 180-200? Whelp... I can already see my GF rolling her eyes at me again.

    Nice review. My thought mirror yours. I bought the silver kit and used my own switches and Dasher keycaps from DROP. It certainly has room for improvement to add some flex, however it's a fantastic keyboard for the price. I got mine on a sale for $139 and I'm very pleased with it for the money spent.

    The only thing I don't like about it is the LED bars on the sides. The exploded 75% layout is perfection. Not worried about the stabs, I've found no difference practical difference in sound/feel between generic, GMK, and Durock stabs after tuning. Could not care less about how stabs sound stock, since no keyboards in this category come with have properly lubed stock stabs AFAIK.

    I totally agree about the inner corners of the board. My XDA V2s sit so perilously close to scraping the sides (especially on the arrow cluster and 1x4 column), hella wack. Could've just made the clearance bigger and made the case higher-profile too, which would hide the corners of the case not complementing the keycaps or whatever.

    I cant remove the screws near the engraved GLORIOUS only 2 of them will come out. Apparently pretty common on certain runs. Aside from that this is a great keyboard.

    Gonna stick with the Niz Keyboards, better clonky sound, great build quality. I love it mostly for sound and typing feedback.
    the GMMK Pro sounds.... like any other keyboard if properly lubed and tinkered with

    Thank you for your thoughts. I appreciate you finding out key points that would bother my OCD after spending a lot of money to customize this. You helped me realize that not even way more expensive keyboards are perfect. Thank you for saving my wallet.

    Planning on reviewing Keychron Q1 soon? It seems to be giving GMMK a run for it's money. The flimsy metal side you demonstrated in this video on the GMMK Pro along with the plate sizing issue is steering me closer to the Q1.

    QMK and VIA now work btw. You can ditch the stock firmware easily. Apparently it reduces input lag by a lot too.

    Seems they did a decent job. I'm passing on my reservation though. Their "ice white" snafu is ridiculous. I don't need another silver keyboard. I ordered white.. thinking it was white.
    The poor VIA support is another hit.

    What a great review. I had one in my cart and I'm on the fence now. I got burned with their model O mouse because their software needed the firmware update before use, and has actually NEVER worked on any of my devices. I worry that their keyboard software will be a complete failure to launch too. I'll just build another KBD75 with full control.

    Could you please explain why PCB-mount stabs are preferable to plate-mount stabs?
    I like the look of the case (though I prefer TKL), but I can't trust GMMK after being jerked around by their 'help' department.

      Stability. they have less play and feel better than plate mount. They also won't pop out when you change a keycap.

    Just as a note, plate mounted stabs are not really bad at all as long as you lube and clip them and tune them well. I have a ton of OG Cherry ones that have been done prior to the terrible retooling and use them sometimes in side projects and stuff like that.

    Probably the most useful review on this keeb I've seen so far - lots of great information and pleasant to watch.
    I haven't gotten to try a Kara, but if it has anything in common with the KBD67L, it might just be worth what they're asking. I love my monolithic metal keebs - but the best typing experience in my collection has an ABS plastic case and a polycarb plate, and costs less than the Pro here. It doesn't have the striking presence on a desk that a metal or even polycarbonate case keyboard does, but I keep coming back to that gasket-y goodness.

      At the time of writing, the knob can't be remapped at all through Core. If you flash QMK on it, you can map it to do whatever you want.
      However, I don't think it's possible to make the keyboard know what software it's controlling
