Even with all the positive aspects, I can’t help but think that I could buy an entire refined Starclassic kit with $2,295.. 😬😬😬
I think it sounds damn good and like the look. You guys hands down get the best sound out of any kit.
Love you guys. You give every drum and company the benefit of the doubt, but you're also always honest.
Bravo for calling them out. It takes tremendous nerve to sell out of round drums and hoops and treat it like it's your brand. Whatever makes a person happy, I guess, but this is silly.
Doesn't beat my $900 Ludwig 14x8 Copper Phonic. Although Ludwig's QC is awful as well, my first Copper Phonic was shaped like a taco, but Sweetwater immediately replaced it, and it sounds AMAZING!
Thanks for being honest about it :)
Always appreciate it when reviewers don't just have nice things to say
The review is absolutely spot on, couldn't be better. Although the 'weak points of certain apects of the product shown in this clip (which in relation to it's price, definately need to be improved) when a drummer named Dan Mayo is playing on these drums, in my personal view it brings yet another dimension to these drums.
Thank you for the honest review!
Rim shots would be nice to hear though, don't know if I heard a single one on this video.
Oh, dear: Rolls Royce prices; kit-car standards. And to state the obvious, at this price, everything should be utterly and completely perfect in terms of build quality. I get the whole patina-look thing (if that's your thing), but that needs to be backed up with superlative build and top-notch components. I adore Drumazon, and admire their quest to bring new and exciting brands to the UK, but in my opinion, this is a case of the Emperor's New Clothes: "But it costs nearly £3K. It MUST be good!" When I can afford it, I'm happy to spend on good gear, but at this price, you could buy two or three absolutely stunning top-line snares (or many more mid-range snares that will do an equally good job). It would be interesting to know who will actually buy this thing, and equally interesting to know why they bought it. It certainly won't be me, and I don't envy the person who does spend this shed-load of cash only to find they can't even get their new drum in tune, the snare mechanism is close to useless, and the welding looks as if it's been done by a visually-impaired orangutang. On a Friday. Whilst drunk. And wearing boxing gloves.
Burn.
You spent all that time ranting without mentioning how it sounds
@@JG-nx3jg It's certainly not a rant. And not mentioning the sound tells its own story - for the price, it's barely noteworthy.
Sounds wonderful but, oh man, the price! I suppose that you could carry it around and save on the cost of gym membership. For serious collectors only.
Super beatufiul! I've stuck to quiet bearing edges on wood and wood hoops for decades but this still has turned my ear obviously owed largely to your hard work tuning this puppy. Price doesn't make sense for me though as no one can hear how it looks on a recording 😂
I have an aluminum a&f kit, and my hi tom is the same; shell and hoop are completely out of round and hard to tune as a result. However, the kick and floor time are my favorite drums I've ever owned. The screws do, however, back out easily. I assume it's from the mass resonance of the shells and maybe some quality control of the hardware.
I think the snare sound incredible as does their entire line however the price makes it out of reach to me. I'm not sure who the market is because as others have noted you can get a high end drum kit and have enough left over for a copperphonic or DW copper snare.
Silly price.
Prefer Ludwig Supraphonic at a fraction of the price.
Even Craviottos are cheaper and sound better.
I thought it sounded wonderfull in the low and medium tensions, but choked out a bit on the high tension. Love theese drums, and hope to one day be in possession of one!
Great, honest review. My
suggestion is get a Keplinger for
a third of the price!
Dig that dude's playing!
To me personally, the sound is not great enough to cross out ugly looks, outdated hardware construction and high price. Thumbs up to the review, nonetheless
Dmitry Shkolnik Yes look at what you get with the Gretch USA Solid Steel @ $650 and the Solid Phosphor Bronze @ $1400 and they are absolutely amazing sounding modern designed drums.
Thanks for the honest review! Although it may have just killed this drum.
I do appreciate the honest review but how on earth did you ever expect to be able to tune it with a bent hoop? My lawd, is that even possible?
Is there a follow-up up video with a straight hoop? Asking for a friend. 😂
Bravo for getting it sound as good as you did with poorly made hoops! Having said that it’s tuning range seems quite small... high and low didn’t do it for me personally
Nice at the lower tuning, like the beer tap strainer. Really died at the higher ranges.
Not worth anywhere near £3k, real build quality issues, out of round hoops? You don't get that on a budget kit.
A Ludwig 400/402 and the acrolite would have this for breakfast and you could pick up all three used for under a grand.
Their drums I’m not into but the snare sound amazing. Creative design. The issue here in my opinion is that they simply don’t have very skilled craftsmen. I’ve seen shotty work on a lot of their drums. Leaving things a bit rough is ok, but for a $2k snare all should be perfectly round, flat, square, etc. Look at AK snares, ocd level perfection each build
Nothing I heard here sounded noteworthy, much less worth the hefty price tag. With that said, I’ve played a couple at a drum shop in the States, a wood drum and a bell brass “A&F’er” , and they sounded extraordinarily good. Eye watering even. Is there a chance that the hoop was damaged during shipping?
I have two A&F metal snares and they sound amazing. I think they still have some growing to do in the quality control department but a bent hoop not something that should even happen. I don’t know why they bothered reviewing it quiet honestly. They should have returned it or requested a new hoop before reviewing it.
Can you look at reviewing the new Tama Walnut/Birch line? That'd be siiiiick
I have an A&F Bronze and Raw Steel snare and they are best sounding snares I’ve ever played. I have to believe that many of the issues w this review have to do w the bent hoop. There’s no way to make that sound good and it’s totally unacceptable to receive a drum in that condition. Also the price in the UK is prohibitive.
Rolls Royce prices for a rather pedestrian sounding snare that looks like it was salvaged from a damned brushfire. Go home, A&F.. you’re drunk.
I think this sounds amazing, but I’ve seen a lot of commenters critique it’s hardware (understandable), look and price. Any alternatives that are cheaper but achieve the same sound?
I held off of watching this particular review for a few days, and I can only agree with the overall review in terms of the drum's sound: low tuning was the only good one and the other two were like, "meh".. Studios would certainly enjoy this for recording but you'd have to treat the drum like it's antimatter on a live gig I guess.. Nice effort in the review tho 👍👍
Great Honest review! When you can buy CopperPhonic for almost £2000 less, a drum like this makes no sense to me.
I'm Agree With Nolly, The Price Is ridiculous, The Operation & Functionality is not even near The cost. You Can Buy 2 Different High End Snares with this money that each one is far better than an a&f!
old beer tap style throw off. i have a 60's camco with the same one.
I feel that with all the hype around a&f drum co, a lot more people should see this review, it was really eye opening for me and i will 100% never spend any money, especially this much, on those terribly built drums.
the "details" for a snare on that price tag are simple Unnaceptable. the welding and the holes in the bottom hoop for the wires seem a joke. I thought those drums would be something else for the price.
Nice and honest review!
Uneven tuning, not to mention the cost is a deal breaker. I can get a number of great sounding TUNABLE copper snares for half or less than half of that.
i have heard Rodney holmes play a 425 bucks tama slp g birch snare and it sounded much better than this.
its about style , i like a lot a & f...
Hipster vanity drums... nothing else. I've watched most of the videos on their website and they sound pretty bad. Judging by the low quality steampunk looming hardware, I think 90% of their effort has gone into look and not much into sound.
Bent hoops, horrible welds, cheap snare mechanisms, untunable, and A&F charges 3k for this? That’s almost as insulting as 4.5k for their field kit. At least drummers review gives an honest review so I know to never buy from A&F drum company :/
21DaHoagie12 WOW. I didn’t know there were so many problems with their drums. The old world aesthetic is not my thing but I thought they were producing top quality drums for the price and based on the stellar reviews from certain channels here on YT. I honestly CANNOT WAIT until that southern hipster chic aesthetic does out and we get back to modern drums like Yamaha, Pearl and Tama produce as the core of their lineup.
good! go get a DW like the rest of the uneducated drummers of the world
2700 lol lol, what the hell. Probably cost them 200 to make, unbelievable these prices
I bet you the hoop got bent during shipping.
Was the welding done during shipping too?
@@M123OCT During an earthquake I believe
@@M123OCT i guess you have never welded anything??
Thanks for the honest review and a peek inside at the build quality. Looks like it was built in a blacksmiths shop. As I expected. I've been seeing a lot of reviews of these drums and everyone gushes over them for the low tuning. I don't care for the sound and I really don't like the style. This brand reminds me of the story of the king who wore no clothes but nobody had the nerve to tell him. If you want the looks of a vintage kit, buy a real vintage kit. Then you'll have something special with some history and they actually sound great.
Over-priced drums for hipsters
Think it’s a case of, “ I saw you coming, “ with this snare. Underwhelming
Luxury or necessity? 😅
I really would suppose that the harsh critics in the comments about the quality and prize of these drums come from very young drummers. Which the experience of 40 years of drumming I can hear the valence of the sound and interesting for the A&F company I know about their immense knowledge about building drums and why they concentrate on the design of the building era of the 20's to the 40's...... guys, these drums are highest standards and not comparing to the mass-building bulk goods of the great drum brands - even there is nothing bad with them! Owning a bunch of custom made snare drums I would say that the biggest difference is just.......character...! Its up to you if its worth the prize........
You suppose wrongly then - I'm 59. And no, this drum is not built to the "highest standards"; the evidence is right there in front of you.
I'm 60 and was playing semi professionally at 13. I've seen, heard, owned and played countless snare drums. This drum isn't worth the money whatever age you are.
at that price tag, the snare mechanism and the HOLES on the bottom hoop are just a DISASTER... how dare them to charge that money giving THOSE "features"...
That alone is for NOT BUYING.... they need to get a little bit more serious about themselves
Sounds great at the low tuning, but it's nothing unique. You could get that sound without having to spend $3000, and it'll probably be better built.
Fair & honest review! Good job!
Well... With all due respect to A&F company:: this snare doesn't sounds extraordinary. Quality of the sound and quality of the build don't justify high price of A&F drums and this particular snare as well! 2500$ for welded snare?! Ridiculous! I can get 2 or 3 classical Ludwig snares (Phonics or Black Beauty) instead.
I've always loved the look of these drums, but I've never really liked the sound. Those hoops are hideous. I thought that for the price you'd get a finely crafted snare but I never thought they were so poorly assembled
Looks like something you'd find in a junkyard. I'll stick with Tama Starphonic Copper. Who buys this stuff?
Great honest and unbiased review, hats off to Drummer's Review
I find this very disturbing news.I was under the impression that A&F was the cream of the crop, evidently not the case.To bad.Had a similar experience with one of the Roger dynosonics when they first released them.Could not get the drum to sound right, under further examination the bottom head was bent as well as the bottom hoop. After replacing both finally got it to sound like it should. That drum cost $800.00.on top of that the snare mechanism is real janky. I'll stick with Craviotto solid ply,DW ply drums, and for metal You can't beat a Tama starphonic or a good old fashion Ludwig supra.
good! go get a DW like the rest of the uneducated drummers of the world
It does sound very good, but no thanks
Solid meh
How disappointing! For that sort of money it’s got to be the real deal and some, but it’s not!🤨
Not impressed at all. WAY too much money.
Who ever buys a snare with out of round hoop is not a modern day pro drummer
it is incomprehensible for me that AF demands over 2k for this insanely ugly and poorly crafted piece of metal.
good! go get a DW like the rest of the uneducated drummers of the world
