    Thank you , the house we bought has a bat coloney in the attic, I bought a large bat box . I don't want to oust these bats but I want to redirect them and give them a better option. I love bats they eat they're weight in bugs every night ....a large amount of those bugs are mosqito's. I have always lived with bats around I love them.

    We've had bats in our attic and finally were able to get them out. we put up a bat house in a large tree close to where they were in our house. How can we get them to use the bat house we put up in a tree. A question, if we put the house on our chimney, what do you do with their feces? Does it drop to the ground and then clean it up? We live in central Florida and love watching them at dusk and early in the morning.

      Bat's don't like tree hung houses for some reason. Best to put it up high on your house or on a pole no less than 14' above ground (20' pole).

    • @BatBnB
      @BatBnB  3 года назад +6

      Thank you so much for giving the bats a safe home! We typically caution against using trees for two primary reasons. The first one is that the branches will shade the BatBnB and prevent it from getting 6+ hours of direct sunlight per day (the most important factor affecting occupation chances). The second one is that the branches will act as a perch for predators which can turn your BatBnB into a death trap for roosting bats once they exit the unit. If there are not many branches on the tree, these may not pose as much of an issue. Chimneys are usually excellent places for bat houses, but just make sure that there is about 12 of unobstructed area beneath the bat house for the bats to exit safely. (If there if a roof ledge close underneath it could block the bats from exiting and render the bat house unoccupied).
      Here's a video we made to help answer bat dropping questions! ruclips.net/video/aI_dEmD8PUI/видео.html
      The bat droppings will usually wash off in the rain and we recommend hanging your bat house over a low-traffic garden bed so that the droppings act as a fertilizer for the plants beneath. :)

Size is the most important factor for bat house success according to bat experts. :) Glad you like them though! Best of luck making it! Also we have some free resources for how/where to hang your bat house if that’s helpful :)

    • @BatBnB
      @BatBnB  Год назад +2

      In the Northeast, bats will use bat houses as a summer home and will go elsewhere for the winter. You can choose to bring the bat house down during the winter if you want, or they can stay up. Bat houses can definitely be successful in the Northeast!

    Will the bats hibernate the bat house in Michigan winter

    • @BatBnB
      @BatBnB  3 года назад +4

      Great question! Typically no, bats usually prefer to hibernate in caves or mines or to migrate further south. Bats will most frequently use bat houses in the spring after they emerge from hibernation, and during the fall and spring as migratory stops and even nursery colonies. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask! :)

      @@BatBnB I do have another question. Is it safe to have a bat house and owl house in the same small backyard?

    • @BatBnB
      @BatBnB  3 года назад +5

      @@roberthernandez782 Yes but it’s ideal to put your bat house about 20 feet away from major tree branches where the owls and hawks could perch- that way the bats have time to evade them while exiting.

    These same principles apply for bat houses in tropical regions?

    • @BatBnB
      @BatBnB  2 года назад +2

      It depends where, because a lot of tropical bats are fruit eaters and those bats do not use bat houses.
