Thanks for sharing. You have reminded me that I have to get back out on the ice. I Haven't ice fished in over 10 years, and (after watching this video) sure do miss it!
What dedication for a few fish. And all that equipment! Wow. I never knew you could even do this and I'm 85 yrs old now. I must have been living in a box. Some tough folks up there. These films are so good, quite professional. I love watching this guy go through life. Good luck to you.
This is the first time I've ever seen ice fishing from start to finish. Makes me wish I lived up there around you. Very nice vid, have more fun fishing.
Thanks SSGTJAB. I will be heading to Louisiana in a few weeks and will spend a while down there. I love the snow and ice but it gets old and I am looking forward to tossing a line in water that is not frozen as well lol. Im will have videos from down there as well and then be back up here ice fishing. I have more ice fishing videos to post, I have been out two more times so please stay tuned for those. Thanks again. Joe
I've never lived anywhere that the lakes freeze so that was a GREAT video! I had no idea the work involved to catch a fish but you got some really great one's! I think you're right Joe the "F" bomb one was the best :))))) was waiting for the touch down dance LOL maybe next time.
Dammit that looks like fun! Question though...I've seen a lot of other ice fishing done with rod and real, but you are hand lining. Is there any benefit either way or is it just preference?
Thanks for the video Joe! As usual it was fun to see and learn something new from you. You are the best man! Thanks and happy new years to you and Zach and Sarah!
I'd never heard of this before. It actually looks pretty interesting. Not enough ice where I live but thanks for putting up videos like this so people like me can learn something new.
Us in the desert cannot do this. I look forward to your ice fishing vids. Exciting!! Those are nice fish! And the scraps, knowing that crawfish vids will come too when its time for that.
Thanks for sharing your ice fishing with us. Great camera work! I would love to do this sometime. Question: Why don't you use a reel with your line to reel the fish in instead of hand over hand? You would avoid frustrating line tangles.
im 15 and fishing is LIFE its all i do i know about all the fish species native to my area (New England) and how to fish for them.. there a handful of teens that love fishing
Great video! What is the brand of the shelter you used. It looked like a good design. That really looked like great fun. I was wondering about the wisdom of driving out on the ice until I saw how thick it was. A power auger must be a necessity in your part of the country!
We have hand augers but youd be there all day lol. The portable house I use is a Shapelle and I really like it. It is 9 years old now and I need a new one but it made it through alot of seasons. Thank you. Joe
Man, this is awesome. I would really like to go ice fishing sometime. Sadly I live in Florida, where we are utterly SEASONLESS. lol, the only season we have is HOT.
Great Video and Nice Fish! Have u ever considered dacron line for the setup u were using? It would not tangle up and u could just make a mono leader when u switch to crappie fishing.
Is your shack thermal insulated? I'm about to buy my first shack and have heard thermal is the way to go. I live in North Dakota (I'm from Florida so ice fishing is a new experience for me)
Jamie Barnett Portables have no insulation, but mine has a floor and that REALLY helps. Ice fishing is awesome. Just remember ice is never safe, be careful. Make sure others are driving out and follow "the road". Thank you. Joe
Hi Joe, That looked a lot of fun. I was impressed by the amount of equipment you used, but then the conditions you face are very different to those I'd come across on a beach in the South of England. Regards
Have you ever froze your filets the frozen block of water way to seal all the air out, we put our walleye in a quart bag then fill 1/3 or so full of water the squeeze the air out and freeze laying flat then you get nice flat frozen slabs that taste fresh when you thaw em out? Just checking... Everybody has there own preference.
since it has been over a year since this was posted. I will share some info about the lake in the video. It is Pelican Lake in Wright County Minnesota. It sits between Monticello, Buffalo, & St. Micheal. the lake suffered a major winter kill last year and was opened up to unlimited fish for a short time by the department of natural resources. the lake is also being drained down by 3 to 5 feet to make it back into a waterfowl lake. some fish may have possible survived but to get back to fishing like this will take some years. the worst part is that the deepest part of this lake is only 13 feet so with the draining it will be only 8 to 10 feet at the deepest. now the plus side of the draining is that any fish that do come back with time will be in a smaller area and easy to find until they get cleaned out by everyone if word ever got out the fishing was back if that day ever comes. we can only hope. for the record I got my largest blue gill to date from this lake back in 2008 . it was just around the 10 inch mark.
realtree22x mine is 9 years old and I am in dire need of a new one and I want the same type. I know most people go wit a shack with no floor in it but I really love that mine has a floor. Its warmer and drier. If you going to have a fish house its becuase you want to stay warm.... in my view'..... standing on an ice cube does not seem warm to me LOL.
Hey Joe, where I'm from the only ice we see is in our bourbon glass, so I gotta ask you why ya'll don't have reels on those poles? Seems like pulling all that line in by hand is so awkward! Beautiful fish and another great video! Thanks!
Very nice fish. I like going out to on nice days too. I love northern fishing, they are fun to catch. And when you bone them out they are delicious. Thanks for the videos they are fun to watch.
crazycarlsju Actually the people that drive slow in the left lane drive me nuts and I cant stand them. They were nice fish but they look like babies compared to the Pike caught up north.
nice fishing! i always hated getting my line cut off by pickerel here in nj. what i do is i have a leader of heavier line at the end of my line. i have 5 pound braid on all my reels, and a leader of 40 pound braid.i don't really get cut off anymore, but when the little bluefish are around in the summer they sometimes can shred even the heavier line pretty good.thankfully they aren't in lakes i go to.
+Inbloco Quarteto It's old school, a lot of people grew up doing that ice fishing and just never switched over. The old timers like to do it hand over hand because you feel absolutely everything. great video Joe I'm going ice fishing for the first time tomorrow Jan 25th 2014 the conservation is doing a ice fishing semier there furnishing everything bait poles and drilling the holes
nannymcstink Thank you. They were Northern Pike. Driving is fairly safe on the ice when its thick enough. You learn the safe thicknesses here after watching some trucks and cars fall through lol. Thanks again. Joe
I live in the south and this is awesome! Your video made me want to try ice fishing (only with a hut and heater of course) ha ha. We don't get much ice on our lakes as you might imagine.
Great video as always! Can't wait to go out and hit the ice, have one good place in my area with 5 inches nothing like what you have up there. Can you post a video of how you clean the pike? Heard there really good but don't know how to clean them properly.
Thanks Justin. Here is a link to a video I posted a couple years back on how to clean them and remove the Y biones. Thanks. ruclips.net/video/KP2CgPYXp_Q/видео.html
a good method for ice fishing and not possibly losing your rig(like what could have happened when that big one tangled your lines and pulled the other line down the hole) is to set up a handline holder out of 1/2" to 3/4" plywood. just cut a rectangle shape about 6x15", cut out a 1x4" piece out of both short ends and finally make a slit on one of the wide sides nearly to the middle .this thing will never fall down the hole and will hold a lot of line if you're deep fishing. when fishing, just spool out as much line as you need and set your rig up, then just lay the holder over the hole and put your line in the slit so when the fish takes the line, the weight will be in the center of the holder rather than being on either end, giving the chance for the fish to drag and pull the holder into the hole length ways. been using this for years. we normally have these rigged with circle hooks so the fish hooks itself, giving you more time to catch the fish.
It was 8 feet deep there. The only way I have ice fished was with the stick pole. I have fished in 30 feet of water with them and caught my limit of Crappies. When I was a kid, reel ice fishing rods did not exist and I guess I am fine with that. LOL. Thank you. Joe
Hey Joe, new subscriber here! Love your videos. Do you use a bare treble hook with the suckers? I northern fish through the ice a bunch in Wisconsin. We typically use beaver dam tip ups with shiners and add some red beads to the line. Keep the vids coming. I was talking up all the stuff you do at our family gatherings over Christmas.
Thanks Parkfalls. I use a regular hook, not a treble at all. Next time I am out I will try to remember to show the hook (I have already been out there two more times and have those videos to post so it will be after that) Thank you for the question. Joe
Watched this video with my 5 year old son Bosco. We were both impressed and look forward to seeing more. No worries about the profanity, it's allowed while fishing ;)
just curious what do you do with the pike? I eat pike once it's not too bad.. however it is bony but if you do it right I mean it's not bad, Caught pike again and gave it to my dog.. he loved it soo. what do you use it as?
+Ryan bacon Lots of lakes like this in NE Minnesota. I will tell you this much.... The property I have is surrounded by the Superior National Forest. Most of the lakes up there look like this, very beautiful. There are 3.9 million acres in that forest and lakes everywhere and many tent type campgrounds and remote camp areas on some of the lakes. hey joe.... I have one question, how in the hell do you always catch those big pike!! on my tip ups I am usually fishing 12 ft of water and I set the dead shiner up with a live mud minnow to make it twich and I never get a hit! but the perch always steal my mud minnow, I am wondering the way you find works best for pike, how to set the line and such.... thanks!!!

I actually enjoyed the profanity. Let the rest of us know that you can get excited just like us. although I tend to swear a lot worse than that.
Lol. I do LOTS of editing haha. Thanks. Joe

My favorite part of this video is how you labeled the bags crayfish/crawfish....that cracks me up. Great video, great fishing. Cheers from Wisconsin.
I don't miss the Cold, Snow and Ice, but this video brings back many fond memories of Ice Fishing! Thanks for Sharing!
Dammit that looks like fun! Question though...I've seen a lot of other ice fishing done with rod and real, but you are hand lining. Is there any benefit either way or is it just preference?
preference.
Great job, you caught 3 beautiful fish. They taste better than they look. Look forward to all your videos.
Vinny
Wow, that looked like a ton of fun! Fishing and profanity go hand in hand my friend! Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for the video Joe! As usual it was fun to see and learn something new from you. You are the best man! Thanks and happy new years to you and Zach and Sarah!
I've never even cared about the idea of ice fishing but I'm inspired after watching this video. lol What a great day, hope you have many more.

A lot of 14 year olds would probably be too cool or think this is stupuid and boring but I think this is very entertaining thanks for posting this :)

I am 14 and live in holland i don't think it's boring
I'm a 14 year old girl, and I ADORE ice fishing and fishing in general!! :)

This was an awesome video. I am living in south Carolina but from Minnesota and this video makes me want to move back even more!!!!
Is using a reel an option ?
Cool video! I'm ready to go fishing. Hopefully Nebraska gets enough ice this year or I may be travelling north to your neighborhood.
cool thanks for the vid. How warm does it stay in the shelter?
The shelter stays pretty warm, today it was cold but the outside air temp was around 10 below but it wasnt too bad inside. Thanks. Joe
awesome video, what kind of poles are you using?
Omg thats a dream come true for me to be in the middle of a lake fishing in a little warm hut in the middle of winter ^.^ sounds so cozy
+Ammar Badri Thank you, its a very fun season and a great time. Thanks again. Joe
New subscriber here...hey, that was pretty cool man! Thanks for taking us along with ya. I enjoyed watching.

Nice fish, Joe! Looks like a lot of fun, especially when you're catching fish.
New truck! Hope to see you out on the lake again!
Great video. Love the traditional jigging sticks and wooden bobber set up.

Thanks for making my day. Loved the ice fishing!
By the way, loved that you showed the fillets and even used most everything else from the fish for bait. Nice to see.

Exciting video Joe. Beautiful fish. Wish I could be there to see this myself. Wow. You sure know what you are doing. 👍👍
Nicely done, was that on Gull Lake?
Hey great video friend, what kind of heater is that were you can use it inside of a tent?
Great video! I'm looking to do some ice fishing with some friends from work soon. Unfortunately, we were unable to this weekend.

love this video .. what lake are you on the??? lake looks so familiar. you wouldnt happen to be in Minnesota would you?
did you put the fish back
Oh wow , what a great experience for me to watch ! What were the time periods between waiting for the fish to bite ?
I wish you could make a video on how you build those floors

I have several pike cooking videos both on this channel and my other channel Northern Seclusion.

Wow... Cool... Why do you use your bare hands to pull them up though??
+Lisa Moengaroa If I was wearing gloves they would get wet. Its easier to just dry my hands. Thank you. Joe
+JoeandZachSurvival ok ... One more question... Why don't the fish fight you when you're pulling them in??
They do fight, but when the water gets super cold their metabolism changes, and they aren't as explosive.
Wow, fun to watch from here in the south, usually we sit at about 41 degrees all winter, no ice :-(
Very nice that you do not waste a single bit of all the fish. Looks like a lot of fun and even more if you can get a couple of friends fishing with you =)
awesome Joe.....ouch my Virgin ears..lol,,,you really ice fished with sneakers on?
great video Joe I'm going ice fishing for the first time tomorrow Jan 25th 2014 the conservation is doing a ice fishing semier there furnishing everything bait poles and drilling the holes
Brilliant video! Is it not dangerous driving on the ice? What type of fish are they?
nannymcstink Thank you. They were Northern Pike. Driving is fairly safe on the ice when its thick enough. You learn the safe thicknesses here after watching some trucks and cars fall through lol. Thanks again. Joe

You don't need a heater, just good quality winter clothes.
That's too bad this lake is no longer a fishing hole. hope you found an equally grand place to fish!
Nice haul and good work on the video!

Just curious how you use the heads of the fish. There's something great about using what you caught yourself to go to catching more food!
I use that all for crayfish bait. Thank you. Joe
Love the video but dude, when are you gonna get a new windshield in that truck? Haha.
Good video man. nice work on the self filming too.
love this video !!!! nice job and some awesome fish!!!!
Great video,
Looks like a lot of fun thanks for sharing.
Joe, don't worry about the profanity. If I reeled in a big fish like that just using my hands, my potty mouth would be worse. What a day!!!!
You Must live right by me because I go to the same gas station all the time!! Great video!
Im about a mile and a half south from bills off of 5. Thanks. Joe
