Thanks for sharing. You have reminded me that I have to get back out on the ice. I Haven't ice fished in over 10 years, and (after watching this video) sure do miss it!

What dedication for a few fish. And all that equipment! Wow. I never knew you could even do this and I'm 85 yrs old now. I must have been living in a box. Some tough folks up there. These films are so good, quite professional. I love watching this guy go through life. Good luck to you.

Thanks SSGTJAB. I will be heading to Louisiana in a few weeks and will spend a while down there. I love the snow and ice but it gets old and I am looking forward to tossing a line in water that is not frozen as well lol. Im will have videos from down there as well and then be back up here ice fishing. I have more ice fishing videos to post, I have been out two more times so please stay tuned for those. Thanks again. Joe

I actually enjoyed the profanity. Let the rest of us know that you can get excited just like us. although I tend to swear a lot worse than that.

I've never lived anywhere that the lakes freeze so that was a GREAT video! I had no idea the work involved to catch a fish but you got some really great one's! I think you're right Joe the "F" bomb one was the best :))))) was waiting for the touch down dance LOL maybe next time.

Dammit that looks like fun! Question though...I've seen a lot of other ice fishing done with rod and real, but you are hand lining. Is there any benefit either way or is it just preference?

Thanks for sharing your ice fishing with us. Great camera work! I would love to do this sometime.
Question: Why don't you use a reel with your line to reel the fish in instead of hand over hand? You would avoid frustrating line tangles.

Great video! What is the brand of the shelter you used. It looked like a good design. That really looked like great fun. I was wondering about the wisdom of driving out on the ice until I saw how thick it was. A power auger must be a necessity in your part of the country!

Have you ever froze your filets the frozen block of water way to seal all the air out, we put our walleye in a quart bag then fill 1/3 or so full of water the squeeze the air out and freeze laying flat then you get nice flat frozen slabs that taste fresh when you thaw em out? Just checking... Everybody has there own preference.

since it has been over a year since this was posted. I will share some info about the lake in the video. It is Pelican Lake in Wright County Minnesota. It sits between Monticello, Buffalo, & St. Micheal. the lake suffered a major winter kill last year and was opened up to unlimited fish for a short time by the department of natural resources. the lake is also being drained down by 3 to 5 feet to make it back into a waterfowl lake. some fish may have possible survived but to get back to fishing like this will take some years. the worst part is that the deepest part of this lake is only 13 feet so with the draining it will be only 8 to 10 feet at the deepest. now the plus side of the draining is that any fish that do come back with time will be in a smaller area and easy to find until they get cleaned out by everyone if word ever got out the fishing was back if that day ever comes. we can only hope. for the record I got my largest blue gill to date from this lake back in 2008 . it was just around the 10 inch mark.

nice fishing! i always hated getting my line cut off by pickerel here in nj. what i do is i have a leader of heavier line at the end of my line. i have 5 pound braid on all my reels, and a leader of 40 pound braid.i don't really get cut off anymore, but when the little bluefish are around in the summer they sometimes can shred even the heavier line pretty good.thankfully they aren't in lakes i go to.

+Inbloco Quarteto It's old school, a lot of people grew up doing that ice fishing and just never switched over. The old timers like to do it hand over hand because you feel absolutely everything. Big fish like this have a tendency to cut the crap out of your index fingers though, I definitely use a reel lol.

a good method for ice fishing and not possibly losing your rig(like what could have happened when that big one tangled your lines and pulled the other line down the hole) is to set up a handline holder out of 1/2" to 3/4" plywood. just cut a rectangle shape about 6x15", cut out a 1x4" piece out of both short ends and finally make a slit on one of the wide sides nearly to the middle .this thing will never fall down the hole and will hold a lot of line if you're deep fishing. when fishing, just spool out as much line as you need and set your rig up, then just lay the holder over the hole and put your line in the slit so when the fish takes the line, the weight will be in the center of the holder rather than being on either end, giving the chance for the fish to drag and pull the holder into the hole length ways. been using this for years. we normally have these rigged with circle hooks so the fish hooks itself, giving you more time to catch the fish.

How shallow was that spot? Is that what makes the no reel pole work for you?

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  10 лет назад

It was 8 feet deep there. The only way I have ice fished was with the stick pole. I have fished in 30 feet of water with them and caught my limit of Crappies. When I was a kid, reel ice fishing rods did not exist and I guess I am fine with that. LOL. Thank you. Joe

Hey Joe, new subscriber here! Love your videos. Do you use a bare treble hook with the suckers? I northern fish through the ice a bunch in Wisconsin. We typically use beaver dam tip ups with shiners and add some red beads to the line. Keep the vids coming. I was talking up all the stuff you do at our family gatherings over Christmas.

Thanks Parkfalls. I use a regular hook, not a treble at all. Next time I am out I will try to remember to show the hook (I have already been out there two more times and have those videos to post so it will be after that) Thank you for the question. Joe

Watched this video with my 5 year old son Bosco. We were both impressed and look forward to seeing more. No worries about the profanity, it's allowed while fishing ;)

+Ryan bacon Lots of lakes like this in NE Minnesota. I will tell you this much.... The property I have is surrounded by the Superior National Forest. Most of the lakes up there look like this, very beautiful. There are 3.9 million acres in that forest and lakes everywhere and many tent type campgrounds and remote camp areas on some of the lakes. I wont tell you the name of the lake but I did get you within 4 million acres. Thanks Ryan. Joe

hey joe.... I have one question, how in the hell do you always catch those big pike!! on my tip ups I am usually fishing 12 ft of water and I set the dead shiner up with a live mud minnow to make it twich and I never get a hit! but the perch always steal my mud minnow, I am wondering the way you find works best for pike, how to set the line and such.... thanks!!!

Sucker minnows med size, set up a bit more shallow6-10 ft deep just off weedlines and other structures. Hope that helps.
