In the pilot episode, the two knuckleheads took to the sky in Barney’s flying machine while the girls started to wait them out by playing cards until tthe two got too tired to stay airborne, and then there was that time the entire water buffalo lodge lied to their wives to go judge a beauty contest and when they got busted, the two bozos dove underwater with only a couple of breathing tubes to give them air while the girls were waiting on the beach for the two to breach.

When Fred brought up an lodge member, the girls assumed he was in the hospital.. But in reality it was for an bachelor party. However the Peekaboo Camera crew arrived and filmed the whole thing. While it was mostly the girl's fault for jumping to conclusions Fred did start the whole thing by not straighten the misunderstanding before it got worse.

Betty and Wilma actually assumed that Fred and Barney's lodge brother, Shelley Shale, had died when they received the phone call from the Grand Poohbah. Fred and Barney pretty much misled the wives or to put it bluntly. They didn't lie. They just didn't tell the truth. Adding insult to stupidity during the bachelor party. They signed a release to appear on Peek-A-Boo Camera. As you stated, they tried to make sure that the wives, and then all of Bedrock, would miss them on Peek-A-Boo Camera.
