6:57... the moment when it begins to dawn on any Ren fan just discovering The Big Push for the first time, that Ren... despite the unbelievable depth of talent and *feel* he's just exhibited as a guitar player... is still NOT the lead guitarist of The Big Push... ♥
It's hard to describe to new Ren fans how important The Big Push is. No one has ever heard of them because Ren basically couldn't tour so they only busked, and the massive bulk of internet buzz about them is... over their cover songs (because they do AMAZING things to other people's music) and NONE of that makes sense to anyone that the band would be anything special. In fact, Romain & Gorran (and probably Glen the drummer too, but I don't know much about him yet) are INCREDIBLE musicians and songwriters (as you will now discover going forward) and they aren't just "whatever half-decent guitarists Ren could find to back him up." They all respect each other's talents immensely and Ren literally steps back to give them space at the front because *they* "make" The Big Push what The Big Push is, almost as much as he does. He's the obvious front man because of his unreal charisma (and he *probably* has the best/most flexible voice?) but he wants THEM to get turns singing too, and he wants to do THEIR original songs along with his, and he wants to let Gorran get to play guitar too (so he plays bass!)
I've never seen it, but I'm told Glen the drummer is actually a bassist (and before they found Glen, Ren played drums... on their early recordings, I guess?). I love watching Glen being SUPER careful/intentful with his drum kit to not overpower what Ren's doing, in that opening stripped-down intro verse of Sheriff.
edit: I really hope you get to do some interviews because I'm 100% convinced that you'd bring out some SUPER interesting conversations from artists/people in the industry.

      Thank you! I appreciate that.
Yeah, probably the first thing I noticed was that this is a 'band', not a Ren support act, but a cohisive, complimentary group of like minded musicians. There is a tangible, deep respect, between them. You can tell by the way the all seem to having a blast.

    • @rebeccaburnell9319

@@PrymalChaos They have a song called Dignity where Romain sings the verses and Ren sings the chorus, and the video is a retrospective of clips of them having fun together with and without their instruments. It brings tears to my eyes every time, and for once it's mostly not the lyrics - it's watching how good they were together, and knowing that they've gone their separate ways.
I know Ren's said they left it open that they might work together again; it was his unpredictable health & the opportunity to try treatment in Calgary that led to them disbanding... but it can be VERY hard to pick up where you left off when life has taken each of them to wildly different places (physical and metaphorical) in the intervening months.
No matter how good they were together, is it the right thing for Ren to reunite with them, even if it was an amazing collaboration before he left the UK? Even if reforming the band would present incredible opportunities for the other guys (re: their profile on the world stage as musicians), where has life taken Gorran and Glen in the interim (Romain moved immediately into working on a solo career so he's still "in the game"); just because you wanted your band to get big when you were together doesn't mean you're ready/able to throw yourself back into it after a lengthy break that you all knew could be permanent.
      Anyway.
Nothing to do but sit back and enjoy what they left us, and whatever they gift to us solo or in any collaborative capacity that comes about, through the years ahead of us. ❤️

On a side note you mentioned you weren’t sure of the geography of England. Ren was actual born in North Wales where I live, he went to the same school as my kids. He moved to Brighton which is south of London where he busked after busking in the Bristol area, look up Trick the Fox on Wikipedia. Ren and The Big Push have an amazing selection of songs from varying genres well worth checking out. I believe Ren is a very special talent, a rare diamond and we are super proud of him here. The organic nature of music description you were giving made me think of trying to learn a foreign language. At beginner levels, you have to translate the foreign language into your native tongue to understand, but once you become fluent, your brain actually thinks in the new tongue (I only had this happen very briefly once, but lost it from not using the 2nd language at all). I very strongly thought of jazz musicians right before you mentioned that. It does seem crazy that such an incredibly symbiotic grouping of musicians from the soul came together in Brighton.

      @PrymalChaos  11 месяцев назад +1

You're right! I feel like it's becoming more rare due to the live production standards these days. If you're a major touring artist, everything is synched to a clock so that your light and audio visual production (and backing track) can all be locked in. There's no room for improv. That said, that's most of the mainstream major touring acts, you can still find acts that keep it more analogue, you just have to look for them I guess.

The diversity he displays here is really showcasing the depth and breadth of his talent. On which topic; my own view is that 'one' can study theory and technique for years, but unless you are born with music in your bones! you will always and only be a great 'technician'. We immediately know the difference when we hear it. Soul speaks to soul.

      1) I once saw someone say "Red Suspenders Ren is a cheat code" in terms of how f'n AMAZING all 3 videos from this performance are.
      However:
      2) If the Red Suspenders Ren version didn't exist, we'd STILL all be raving about the Bleached Hair Ren version (which is Sheriff/Zion only).
      3) ... Ren's got less energy/stamina in the Bleached Hair Ren version, and I once saw someone say that this was because he was recovering from Covid.
      4) I've never seen any confirmation of that story, so I guess take it with a grain of salt, but whew - if chronically-ill, *immunocompromised* Ren can pull off the Bleached Hair Ren performance of Sheriff/Zion while coming off a bout with Covid...
      ... jfc.

Ren is also influenced by Jeff Buckley .Ren also has some great improvision with Sam Tompkins and Chinchilla in her one street performance . Both are proformances I would give my eye teeth to have heard live .

This was undeniably a special sunny day in Brighton for these 4.... I definitely recommend catching the "War Pigs" (Sabbath/Ozzy mashup with a crowd-pleasing surprise ending) followed immediately by the "Paint It Black" closer from the same set. #Special ;)
p.s. I hadn't seen that Matt Corby live vid- cheers for that!

I could see in your face exactly how I felt when I heard this for the first time--and every time since. There are "list videos" showing the "top ten best live rock performances in history" and the like, but for me, few live performances are as kinetic, raw, inviting, immersive as this one (or their Wade in the Water mashup, Lonely Boy/Paint it Black, War Pigs, on and on). The first time I watched TBP's I Shot the Sheriff, I found myself saying, "Yeah, we've GOT to keep on moving on the road to Zion!" When the song was over and I came out of my trance, I thought, "What the hell is the road to Zion?" 😂
Edit: When I said "kinetic, raw, inviting, immersive," I was searching for just the right word. A few minutes later it came to me: intimate!

Hey y'all, food for thought..since Ren is originally from Wales, and he speaks a bit of Welsh (and yes, it is a different language from English), this is likely a contributing factor to why Ren's articulation of what is presumably a strictly 'island sound' in actuality is more closely related to one another much more than many might previously have thought. A majority of the Caribbean islands, including Jamaica, were populated by slaves who first traversed through the 'slave depots', where they were inhumanely held for periods of time like chattel, until they were 'ready for transport' intercontinentally. Although rarely recounted in history books, the fact is that those depots were predominantly located in England, Scotland, and Wales. It is a little discussed dark bit of history regarding the UK's full influence as a driving force in the propogation of chattel slavery for profit. Even as England banned slavery more than 50 years before The States, it continued to 'service' this pipeline internationally for many more decades to come. Thus, for a large period of time, the first introduction of English to these enslaved island people was in fact strongly articulated with a brogue or Highlands accent..so though I'm certain Ren is paying homage to Marley, the accent isn't inauthentic or overtly dramatized, but in fact the continuation of an ancient dialect, just delivered over time from different geographical regions and cultural adaptations. 🌈ᥫ᭡

Sending you a shitload of mental hugs brother. Ren turns 34 in March. You could read a bit about his fight and journey, you have a similar story and might be able to relate big time.
I think you need to keep letting yourself feel all these emotions so you can start unloading some of that immensely intensity.
Seeing you feeling so deeply shows you have a beautiful soul. ❤

I put this on repeat on my big stereo sytem the night I first watched it. Nothing is better than being out shopping or walking, and coming across really good live music unexpectedly. It's like the sun comes out and everything feels *more*. I miss it a lot.
Ren is playing guitar with his soul, indeed. I'm glad you saw it right away! He can't *not* make music. It's inside him everywhere.
Glad you mentioned the Buckley influences, too. It's a beautiful thing to think his music and techniques may have inspired Ren. He hasn't said as much, but it's clear. ❤

    • @rebeccaburnell9319

Ren did say that he's inspired by Buckley! He's cited Chris Liepe's videos analysing Buckley's vocals, as being really important to his own development as a vocalist, so you're 100% right! 👍

@@rebeccaburnell9319 I must've missed that. How cool! I could hear and see it so clearly, but it's not a copy. It's Ren showing the same innate feeling and soul. The same improv skills, the same winding, sometimes discordant journey he takes you on. The blurring of genres. It feels wonderful to see that again in someone. Wasn't sure I ever would!

This group could have been bigger than the Stones if they had been able to stay together; yet each of the members is wildly talented and different. I enjoy watching each as they produce their individual music nowadays. It's wild how different their styles are and how they melded into an even greater whole.

Daaaaamn, had no idea Matt Corby had those kinda chops. In my conceit I had him pigeonholed as a (albeit effing talented) folk singer. Guess you could do the same with Ren if you only caught the “popular” songs and didn’t go down the rabbit hole. This is why I love your analysis videos man - thanks!
