    Unto the Locust was an album that helped me get into heavier music way back when. Not a diehard Machine Head fan, but I think up until Catharsis they had a pretty great track record. That album was so cringe though; glad to hear they bounced back. :)

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад +4

      Necrotic Nick- I've been a fan from the start and sadly Catharsis isn't the only pitfall in their career. Still, I keep coming back because I know what they're capable of when they're on their A game. This is a good one but I still think there's work to do to get back to stuff like Burn My Eyes or The Blackening honestly.

  • @ThunderTHR
    @ThunderTHR 2 года назад +8

    I was super hesitant about getting into this album after the absolute flop that was *Catharsis,* but after hearing some of the first few tracks they were making into singles, my hopes were rising.
    Honestly, I'm really happy with how this album has turned out, I think its honest to god their strongest work since Unto the Locust.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад +2

      Necrotic Nick- Believe me, I was right there with you. While I liked some of the singles, I was hesitant that this could still be a dud. I don't think this is perfect or quite on the level of their best albums but it's damn good album and a firm point in the right direction for the band.

    I dunno how Rob Flynn and Machine Head passed me by. I was more into listening to LOG Slipknot Soulfly Pantera back in those mid 2000s and the 2010s I guess. I really should have put more effort into checking them out

    burn my eyes was so killer. that time in metal, god damn, we had burn my eyes, demanufacture, far beyond driven, the downward spiral, astrocreep, nola, in and around that 93-94-95 zone was just so good for new releases coming out.

    I was super into Machinehead for their first 5 albums, I even loved Supercharger when it came out, then I felt like I couldn't relate to that type of lyrics anymore. But I recently got their first 6 albums again, just for nostalgia. The Burning Red still holds up to me, but Supercharger didn't age as well. I love the interaction Robb has had on social with the fans through covid. I may pick this up someday

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад +2

      Necrotic Nick- I was huge into the band up until Supercharger. That album really put me off but Through the Ashes of Empires really got me back into them again. I still go back to this band periodically but it's the older stuff that really still resonates with me. This was good though and it's definitely the right track for Machine Head to be on after the last one.

    I has listened to a lot of various heavy Metal music in my life and what i like is a band that changes their music play style so a band never gets bored out of playing same song ord text on a repeat for example " My Hands Are Empty " is for me a hit song because i has listened to all Machine Head albums and this my hands are empty is something i never heard with Machine Head before on any of their previous albums so that song my hands are empty is defenetly a hit song and i listen to a lot of various heavy Metal music so i know when i hear a song played and singed.

    I think Robb was going for the live reaction to get crowds to sing along to the chants for all middle tracks of the album. Those are live songs IMO Yeah I agree that Rotten is old school Machine Head right there. I look forward to seeing them live again. Great comeback CD

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад

      Necrotic Nick- That was my thoughts as well but I still just didn't care for it. It really fall short of making the song more epic or anthemic in my book. Rotten gave me some serious Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change vibes though. That brought me back. I may go see them on tour depending on who they tour with.

    Another excellent review guys! Burn my eyes and The more things change were important in my life back in the mid to late 90s when I got into metal. Yes it does take awhile to get going. MH has always had a bit of loooooooong buildups and it can be annoying at times. Still a few corney lines here and there and over the top harmonic sing-a-longs. The new one is a total banger, nothing is overdone or out of place, and there's a lot of variation, great songwriting, great standout moments... everything that I look for in an album. Necrotic Nick- I still think this is good but I think there was stuff that really wasn't needed. They do sound tighter and more focused but lyrically it's still platitude hell and the "Whoa Ohs" on the album really get annoying. There's definitely some fat to cut off this but overall this is a solid return to form. I don't think it's quite The Blackening or Burn My Eyes levels of greatness but it is good and it's the direction I'm glad they're heading back in.

    With Machine Head, I kinda liked Burn My Eyes a little bit back then. When I heard The More Things Change, I thought it was disappointing. I jumped off with The Burning Red, and then Supercharger was super cringe. I have sparingly checked out some songs here and there, but nothing has truly interested me, including stuff on The Blackening and Unto the Locust. I've just accepted the fact that you can't love everything in the world, and I just don't like Machine Head very much.

      Necrotic Nick- Enjoyed the first 2 a lot and even though I was into nu metal at the time The Burning Red was bit difficult for me to process since they really when all in on that sound. Supercharger was flat out awful but then the next 3 were really good and then there was a bit of drop off once again. I do love this band but there seems to be a cycle of giant peak and massive valleys of suck with them. I think you touch a little on why I haven't warmed to Machine Head or at least followed them with passion... It's Rob Flynn and his grip on the music, like, I think the band would really, really benefit from being a "band", jamming and making music together. Nobody seems to have the balls to just say "Rob- that's a fucking dumb dumb dumb idea!". I think the last couple of good records, there was still a lot of meh, where a little band jam would give so much more. Plus, I really didn't like the way he fucked over the rest of the band and rehired.. it's his band, he can do what he wants, but it came across really a bit shitty.. something you associate with Mustaine more haha.. still, in balance, he did call out Anselmo on his bullying and racism. I will probably give this a listen or two, but they are a long way away from me parting money for releases, as I'd rather spend it on smaller, better bands that are really making great records. Can't take anything away from Machine Head live though- still a great show, especially on a festival stage. Totally gets the crowd going!

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад +1

      Necrotic Nick- I have issues with him as well. While it is essentially his band bringing in solid musicians who know how to write and could help with it and not using their talents doesn't make much sense to me. The comparisons to Mustaine are pretty spot on in that regard up until now since even Mustaine loosened the reigns a bit and like Dirk and Kiko write more material. Surrounding yourself with sycophants never helps either. Much like Mustaine though when Robb is on, he's really on. I think this was a solid effort and it at least puts some distance between that giant catastrophe that was Catharsis and the current direction. Maybe Robb learned a bit of humility over the years too. We'll see.

As for Megadeth, I'm actually excited to hear what's coming from them now. The lead singles have been pretty good. My issues you with Mustaine have always been his voice and his attitude to others. He's been a total dick to other bands in his career, getting them kicked off tours and shows because he didn't like "their attitude" or they disrespected them. Hopefully he's mellowed a bit and realised he's been a dick.. doubt it though. Still, me and my bud are picking up Bloodstock tickets next two weeks and they're closing out the weekend, which I'm sure will be epic. It'll be the first time I've seen Megadeth live since 1988! MH career moves in a predictable wave that goes like this: release absolute banger (burn my eyes). Follow this up with worsening, though still passable releases (TMTC, burning red) until finally, they absolutely shit the bed in apocalyptic fashion (supercharger). But then, behind a steaming mountain of bullshit, hope! An imperfect but certainly much improved release (ashes of empire) surfaces followed by another absolute solid gold classic (blackening). The cycle begins anew: locust (good, but not as good) to bloodstones (has it’s moments, but carries serious flaws) To catharsis (holy Jesus kill it with fire). This new one is a definite step in the right direction; got some filler but the high points blow catharsis out the fucking water.
