- Enjoy the exotic fruits of the forest! Wild edible mushrooms are a unique and delicious addition to any recipe, and they're available for free...you just have to know what to look for. In this video Billy Berger shows some edible wild mushrooms available in the Eastern U.S.
FINALLY a video about mushrooms that aren't "magical". Thank you for this!
Nice to see the young one being taught by dad. I spent some of the best times with my dad in the woods hunting for mushrooms. 💕
Thank you for taking us along into the woods! My favorite kind of video.
I love that you're active again billy! Keep the videos coming!
Well this video couldn't have been timed any better. I just realized some orange mushrooms growing in my backyard and I wanted to make sure that they weren't poisonous because my dogs are back there all the time. Turns out they are just chanterelles. Thanks for the insight man!
I'm not really a nature person even though I grew up in a house kind of in the middle of the forest. This is one thing I can definitely relate to though. Walking through the woods, collecting chanterelles is really exciting. Not only is it the only mushroom I like to eat, you can also sell them to restaurants for a decent buck if you find a lot.
Chanterelles pan fried in butter goes so well with meat.
Thank You for sharing this! There is so much knowledge that can only be shared by showing, indicating little details one can point to... These just aren't the things we can really learn in books, or even hear of via books. I wish more people would take to youtube with what they know and can demonstrate.
friends account not mine..... when you pick any type of mushroom in the wild, use a mess laundry bag not a paper/plastic/leather. this is so the spores drop as you walk and help ensure a larger future harvest. I take my dog that I made a mesh vest for and put some in it and let him run. he will cover more ground then me any day and more the mushrooms come
That's a great idea
Brilliant
What about honey mushrooms? They are parasitic and kill trees.
Once a shroom pops, they shoot their load. Mesh bag does nothing. Speaking of morels. Not sure on the others.
Nice!
Cool video thank you! A heads up to new mushroom foragers: there is a poisonous look-alike of oyster mushrooms to look out for called 'angel wings' (Pleurocybella porrigens).
Wow~
there are so many beautiful chantrell mushrooms.♡
Here in s.korea, they are called ' cucumber flower mushroom' or 'nightingale mushroom'.
Thank you guys. It is fun when mushrooms season come. I'm in Atlanta GA. I love wild mushrooms.
my mom almost killed my family with the poisonous Jackolanterns thinking they were the edible chanterelle mushroom lol we barfed until we were damn near inside out
What a moronic mistake
LMAOOO
How tho ' it is easily identifiable , don't let her forage for mushrooms any more lol she might bring a deadly green cap amanita phaloides one day .
It is simple to I'd , just look at the underside it should have ridges and not gills , generally jack o'lanterns grow from the same base and can be plentyfull from the base chanterelles can grow in large groups but not from the same base 1 to 2 can grow from the same base.
Although not that poisonous as other ones it still is dangerous , another thing that might happen to people is because they are scared from eating mushroom they will have a placebo effect and start showing symptoms of poisoning even tho everything was fine, happened to my friend once , we were eating pleurotus ostreatus lol.
@Jack Mechak not a whole bunch 1 cap of amanita phaloides is enough to kill 7 people..
@Krogan Love amanita is one thing , bigger mistake yes... We are talking about chanterelles , there is only one rule you need to learn basically if it looks like a chanterelle and has ridges it is a chanterelle ..
I can see how a novice can misidentify an amanita for an edible button or such mushrooms , 4 species I suggest begginers start off with are Macrolepiota Procera (if the ring is free its correct) , Coprinus Comatus (it is just unique , pick when it isn't blackening or try to cut the blackened part and don't consume with alcohol ) , pleurotus ostreatus (it is just unique not many mushrooms resemble it that grow on trees ) , I would say boletes but there are poisonous boletes so I say cantarellus and crattarelus , cantarellus have ridges on the underside , crattarellus doesent have anything and it is black and looks like a trumpet hence the name black trumpet, there is a tasty lookalike in cantarellus sp. It is black and looks like a trumpet but has ridges and is not fully hollow while cratRellus is hollow throughout the body
Awesome video as always Billy. Keep the videos coming :)
Very good video; First of yours that I've seen. Keep 'em coming.
I love your videos man!
Glad to see you posting again man. missed your Vids
Awesome video. Beautiful mushrooms!!
I enjoyed this video very much! You did an awesome job of filming, and narrating.
Allen Clark thanks!
Love the video Billy another good one bud
Great video !
Beautiful 'shrooms !
And thank you for your last bit of advice on how and who to help identify safe mushrooms in our local area !
Guarantee you, that is my next step !
As someone from Poland where mushroom collecting is popular I can't stress it enough, first of all, if you're new to mushrooms, please make sure to get them identified by a specialist, and second. DO NOT feed them to minors. EVER. Even if they are identified as safe. I've heard once too many times that a kid had to have their liver transplanted after a parent fed them some dodgy mushrooms. They often proove deadly to adults, and children's livers are even less developed. Stay safe!
FreeQs don't live for the individual self. that is the biggest disservice you can possibly do to mother earth.
Used this video to show people how to cut mushrooms. Thank you!
Totally ENJOYED...Brothers from different parents...
Woww it crazy fantastic to see so many of chanterelles in the wood like that, I love it & your boy is so lovely.
Excellent. I'm pretty sure I saw some of those little orange chanterelles yesterday.
I don't know enough about mushrooms to go collect them though. I really need to rectify that.
angel wings are look a likes to oyster mushrooms
WOAH THERE IS A OYSTER LOOK ALIKE THAT IS DEADLY!!!!!! its called a Angel wings mushroom (Pleurocybella porrigens), which is similar in appearance but is white rather than cream
That is why you NEVER eat a mushroom that you are not 100% certain of
I wish I knew someone knowledgeable on edible/poisonous shrooms. My luck I'll either poison myself or end up naked on a bad trip being hauled to jail
The second outcome sounds pretty fun.
Its not that hard man, ive been at for a few months and found 6 edible mushrooms, just gotta do alot of research, find a target mushroom, chantrelles are a good start, figure out where they grow and their look alikes, and then figure out the identifiers
DangerMou$e I had to crack up on your comment
Learn the poison ones first for your country, then you can eat everything else.
There are plenty of knowledgeable people around. Check out NAMA's website for your local club, join a facebook group on ID, or just ask me questions. facebook.com/funguyforaging/
Should start growing them!!Good video love these types of uploads :D
I live in South Africa so I dunno if we have chanterelles or bolettes or the others :p
great video! thank you
All the mushrooms! I'm not a an of mushrooms, but in a survival situation & I happened to be in the eastern US, I'd definitely forage and eat these. Thanks for sharing!!
Great video.
Very descriptive great vids thanks for the info!
Wonderful Video. ⚡💖
What a nice forest .
I absolutely love Golden Cap mushrooms. When I take them in a dark room I start seeing some crazy shit lol
great video.. very informative!!
LOL I was just wondering about mushrooms here in Virginia and have been searching vids and came across yours Billy! Hopefully I can put some of this to use when I film my ALONE casting video end of September.
It's really cool that ur friend is from sweden cuz I am from there too
where did you find these what trail was y'all on ive found Chanterells at sweetwater creek state park and Kennesaw mountain
Awesome, now I have something else to do when I hit my golf ball in the woods up there...
What are the best months to pick Chanterelle Mushrooms? What trees do they tend to associate with? Thanks!
Billy have you ever considered relocating a few closer to where you need them to be, and if you did how did that work out?
Thanks so much.... very helpful.
Thanks for sharing!
I dont know why, but the chanterelles where i live must be the smallest specimens in the US. The goldens I found yesterday were half the size of the ones in this video
What month or season do you start looking for mushroom edible ones, I live in Alabama, and running into backyard mushrooms, can't if they are edible, growing clusters around and old dea tree area,
3:19 very nice! Perfect with risotto😋
Just to let you know and be careful because there IS a look alike of the OYSTER called the The Mock Oyster Mushroom (Phyllotopsis nidulans). It is much whiter. The only difference is there color.
It also smells like rotten cabbage or eggs, but it is not poisonous.
Doesn't the Oyster mushroom gets confused with the Angel Wing as well, of which is poisonous.
Ive heard the Oyster mushroom is more brown than white.
I think you know what you're talking about, but I think you typoed. Oysters are much more white than mock oysters. Phyllotopsis nidulans is very orange
@@Darkriff they aren't poisonous to everyone! People have been eating them for centuries, and a handful of deaths are only now starting to pop up. Always do thorough research before eating a mushroom and start with a little, but I highly recommend testing your tolerance to angel wings by eating one or two, and waiting a few days. They are quite tasty and abundant, so you are truly missing out by not giving them a shot at all!
Is a great video,I like very much
Can you make some videos with the actual cooking and preparing of the edibles?
have you ever been to kolomoki mounds in blakley georgia?
OMG i want it some 😍😍i wish I live near by so i can pick those beautiful mushrooms
What's the name of that golden mushroom? And the orange one too at the end of the video. Thanks.
Thank you for the awesome video I had to share it.. I subbed ya.. :)
I found an article online talking about what is known as an angle wing mushroom, I suggest you look into it just in case as they are apparently considered the oyster mushrooms lookalike.
What part of Georgia are you hunting in?
Next time I go to the US I will collect the cinnabar chanterelle for sure!
Here in Sweden we have a couple different chanterelle, but the yellow is the most common. It has ridges almost identical as the cinnabar variety, but not often as large as the ones you find, it is not very often that many of that size in the same area at one time, which makes me thing ours are a bit smaller in general. I have never seen a yellow chanterelle with such small ridges/smooth underside. Fun to see :)
Great video! Only downside is the use of plastic bag to collect mushrooms. It is literally the worst enviroment possible for them :(
Weave baskets are the BEST!
Cheers :)
here's a few suggestions to try
select the top type - there are lots available.
grow them in the right environment - some eg oyster muchrooms like cool humid conditions and can be placed outdoors
(I discovered these and the reasons they work from gregs mushroom grower site )
Pleurocybella porrigens, angel wing mushroom, looks similar to the oyster mushroom.
beautiful chanterelle!
Use netted bag to help spread spores?
Ok what time of the year is it ..Is it April or September .
if you collect so many, do you store or preserve them so how-pickle, dehydrate, freeze?
Nicholas Giliberto I have seen mushrooms in antipasto, preserved in olive oil. I am not sure how they prepare them for that though. You could dry them or cook/freeze them.
TELL ME, WHERE IS THIS FOREST LOCATED?
GREAT VIDEO Billy! Now I want to find a mushroom expert here in South Florida and go see what's out in our woods :D
Everyday Adventures hey stranger! How ya been??
Billy I live in Georgia as well. What time of year did you hunt for chanterelles. John W
Chanterelles come out when it gets hot. I normally don't find large flushes until June in NC, but they can be found earlier. As long as there is plenty of rain you'll find them all the way through Oct/Nov. Feel free to watch me here. facebook.com/funguyforaging/
Not the same ones we found growing out of cow patties back in college!
Larry Hampton those dung loving psylicibe shrooms will give you a good trip
there is a look alike for the oyster mushrooms it is called the angel wing they where both considered edible but then people started dieing because of the angel wing
Say hello to Eric from sweden
Gessing he's from somewhere around Norrköping. So hej från köping.
And great video always interesting to see what grows in another part of the world that's in some ways not that different from my part of the world.
i remember watching this when i was obsessed with the fanatic fungi
thank you
Thank u
Great !
Hey. You are displayed on the screen of the Latin names, please. Thank you
Mushrooms is my favorite.
I'm soooo jealous !!
Yummy !
are chantrells in ohio? i only know 1 mushroom i can eat here its a puff ball.
Hi Billy Can you please make another how to make a bow turtorial. Maybe you Can try with ash Wood ? Thanks for the good video
your awesome!
If your salmon is yellow, don't eat it. If it's pink and covered in yellow curry, eat it.
Another tip to go with stem-cutting, it's good to use a basket or mesh bag to collect so that you spread spores along your route. :) Good stuff!
how long before this was the rain?
DC S a few days
When do you find these and what trees do they like?
Chanterelles I mean
the "why the hell they disliked it" ancient mystery appears once more, waiting to be solved....
Did you wear the crocs before or after you got high on shrooms?
Lol Thanks for the laugh.
salmon yellow ??? not sure about that one but excellent video....
Those are some big ass chanterelles! we dont have such big ones where im from in Sweden
Woow amazing I eat this masroom from Nepal
Angel wing mushrooms look like the oyster mushroom.
When hunting for things such as your oyster mushrooms please be careful, there is a type of mushroom imported on accident from europe called Angel Wings which are extremely similar in size, shape and growth, but are 100% white. This is a very deadly mushroom, and they kill hundreds of people in the U.K. annually. Anyways, thank you for posting the video, my mother and I often go looking for wild herbs here in North Carolina, and we've been trying to look into finding mushrooms for drying and consumption too.
Hmm ... I found some yellow Chanterelles on a steep incline near some Douglas firs in Michigan. Water was nearby. There were hardwood trees around. The hill was bare with no grassy growth.
Good weekend occupation. Great thing to teach the kids about too.
Im hungry now! I want some chicken in mushroom cream🤤🤤
I live in GA also could you say where you found these? I homeschool my 2 children and we are learning about wild edibles. thanks
How has the homeschooling been?
@@craterellus3577 it went great both have graduated. It was so much fun. The time I got to spend with my kids teaching them and also learning from them it priceless. One of the best decisions we ever made was to homeschool our children. Thanks for asking. 😃
@@kimhinson50 Congrats to you and them!
Johannes that's not true, they do have some nutritional value. Also squirrels eat them. I often find mushrooms on branches of trees that squirrels have put there to dry out and save for later.
I love that and a boy he looks lovely
I love that kid
If you peel off the spongy layer on the boletes it is firm and meaty. I have hunted mushrooms for fifty years ,never been sick from any . That’s because I stick to the ones I know to be good . I would never advise anyone to just try out some unknown mushrooms .
Can honey mushrooms be confused for very many toxic species besides galerina?
mushrooms are good
