In this video I mix the same song with 5 different studio monitors. These are some of the best studio monitors for music production including the Genelec 8030, Adam A7x, Neumann KH 120, Focal Shape 50, and the Output Frontier. I started the mix from the same exact point with each of the speakers, and then mixed according to what sounded good to me. I did not test the mix on consumer speakers or headphones and then mix again. If you’re looking for the top studio monitors for under $1000, you should consider these. This is the studio monitor comparison you are looking for! If you’re looking for budget studio monitors, you can watch this video • BEST STUDIO MONITORS f...

Great video, Sanjay C. Thank you so much for including us and all the best from Berlin
Hey its Adam!! Love your speakers.
C all the way. way more balanced than others. listened on the Senns HD600/amped. A would be second with some distortion down low and brighter.
Eloquent quality of the subpar, over-hyped HD600s. My DT1990s tell me that A is close to none, followed, maybe, by C. Running a UAD Apollo Solo .
Mix C sounds best for me. It was smooth and balance on my bluetooth IEMs, EQed to sound the way I like, which is great to produce music with.
good monitors aren't supposed to "sound good". They're supposed to give you the truth.
there's no truth it's all subjective as we aren't robots and our ears are less than perfect, I get what you mean but let me tell you something I learned doing something completely different car engine tuning (it's kind of like audio except you tune air fuel and timing of the engine instead of sounds it's a bit like pushing level sliders or turning knobs trying to get a balanced result) theory never matched reality because reality has a billion of variables theory doesn't cover only the end result matters wether your mixing is true or not doesn't matter what does it sounds "most of the time" good
There is no such thing as truth in an audio chain. In the end it comes down to taste at a certain financial level of equipment.
Great comparison, and I‘m happy I wasn’t too far away from your choice in/by choosing B and D.
By the way: brilliant song as a listening example for this test!
Thanks so much! Honestly, my choices are not necessarily the best ones. But interesting to hear that you weren't far off from mine.
This was a fun video, Sanjay C. For me, it was - A, B, C. The vocals were amazing. Love your voice.
In my studio, on Kali IN-8 2nd Wave with my WS-12. All speakers calibrated with Sonarworks SoundID.
My favorite mix was B.
It was the most natural to me.
It might be a little “boring”/flat. But that mix the most balanced for me.
I think that the Genelecs and Neumanns were the best - actually, throw the Adams in there too, but I felt like the mix you did on them didn't feel very "glued" together, as if there were some hollow spots in it. Didn't sound as welcoming as the other ones.
Meanwhile, D and E were a no from me, respectively too nasal and tinny.
after using the A77X's this is a big issue i'm finding with these, my mix sounds-feels more glued together but it's less so in reality on other systems
I came to the same conclusion
Great video concept, appreciate the transparency and little bits of insight as well.
Glad you enjoyed it! Which ones did you like most?
Very fun video, please more of these! :) Thru my shape 65's:
A best one, nice and balanced
B similar to A, but more highs
C similar to A, less bright in the top end
D scooped mids, lots of highs
E kind of boxy and mid range-y
This is what I was thinking. The genelecs just sound the most balanced (imho)
@@aboliguu1168 they are the best simply put
"A the same as B" ?
Thanks, i will not purchase Shape 65
@@oleksandrpotylko8054 He literally said similar what u mean
A and C. I wasn't surprised at the reveal. Genelecs are a bit harsh so mixing with them will make you smooth it out. I like the Neumann mix the best because it was a little brighter. I usually bounce back and forth between monitors to check so I can get bass, atmosphere, and treble right. The Adams and Focals kind of make everything sound a little bit too good for me. The drivers are performing so well that you can listen things that consumer speakers can't handle without producing artifacts. I always test with flawed material when I am purchasing. I used to request jacked up sounding examples of the store employees work to test as well as my most poorly mixed song drafts to test.
Hey that’s a good idea for another video test - fixing messed up mixes!
Adam Makes Such Really Great Audio Interfaces i don't have any S Monitors yet but surely in future i will go with Adam
This is really good 😁❤️❤️❤️❤️ thanks Sanjay really love the mix on the Adams ❤️❤️
Ive been researching Adam audio's range for a couple days now. Trying to convince myself to leave the comfort of Krk and try something different for a change. Immediately mix B just spoke to me, and then the reveal that it was mixed on adam audio. I think this is the final sign I need. Fun Video! Thanks Sanjay
tbh, that bass punch and ringing trebles on B made me think it sounds like KRK Rokit. maybe it is not that far after all.
always enjoy watching!
You have a very nice Voice Sanjay, nice vocal stacking, good stereo two.
just love those filtered e guitar sanjay.... amazing production ❤❤😋
Great video. Would have loved to see the iloud mtm included. Especially mix translation.
Being behind a mixing board since 1975 - seen a lot of change and innovation, but what remains the same is music. Interesting comparison video and I listened to the comps more than once. Like the song you demo'd and now it's stuck in my brain. I would never decide on monitors unless auditioning music I've produced. Each monitor have their own merits. Regarding the song you used, here are my choices: B (Adams), C (Nuemann) and E (Frontier) which was a surprise. I'm trying to find a 2 way system that spreads instruments out on the sound-stage best. Any plans to demo 3 way monitors? Thanks.
Thank you!
Mix A and E were my favorites.
This.
E is massively underrated and gently warm without being middy
E is the only one that I consistently picked as favorite both on my Neumann KH120s and on my Dan Clark E3 headphones.
A and C follow after that.
Thank you for this comparison! Tip for future video(s): I think it would do the community a world of good if you could do a self-noise comparison between 8030c and kh120 (and others if possible) if you still have access to all of these monitors. Nearfield listening on 8030c is very annoying as there is an extremely audible hiss. Some forums suggest the Neumanns are inaudible.
I know this is a year old but i have had the kh120a for like 5 years and no hiss.
@@hjfsound Yeah, for all the Genelec hype ... call me a bit disappointed. May switch down the road. Thank you for the intel!
B is my favorite and then C. A and D also has interesting sound but they are not my taste. Fun comparison. Well done!
How important is the sound card? Is there a difference between a cheap and an expensive sound card?
Hi sir,
How are you?
I am thinking about to buy a pair of Monitor Speakers but I'm confused!
Should i buy Genelec 8050B or Neumann KH310? For Music Production, Mixing & Mastering.
Whats your opinion?
Very well made video. Would do it differently. 1 - play song for 15 sec without adjustments. 2 - adjust mix redo trying to make them equal/best possible. In the end it depends on what listener headphone/speakers are being used to hear the differences.
Hey Sanjay, was wondering if you could do a review on the M-Audio BX5 D3 5' monitors or already have a review of them? These are currently what i'm using for mixing and mastering. Never really see these monitors get compared to other brands. I really do enjoy the sound these monitors put out. Great Vid. My choices are B & C. Was shocked I thought i'd like the adam audios more but C sounded much cleaner in comparison to the other monitors.
the adams and the neumanns were the most balanced imo, i liked the genelecs too
Wow another vote for the Adams
I like C, I think it's the best balanced where the vocals still sound forward but not like a phone EQ effect. I think the 1k-2k Hz range differentiates all the different versions.
I like A and E too
In B and D I think the 1k-2k range is too forward
I really love the Adam A7x and the Output Frontiers sir, they sound so good and make huge difference sir.🙂😊☺️😌😄😃😀😁
Hey buddy...thanks for taking the test and sharing your preferences
@@SanjayC My pleasure!
Those mixes are too different from each other on my monitors. I thought studio monitors are flat, meant to be flat across the frequency spectrum except the bass (because of woofer size limitations) but the difference is insane, could be the difference of your demo track being selected or rejected. B is my favorite btw, followed by A and C
In a perfect, acoustically treated environment they are flat. Thats why its always best to spend the $$$ on panels rather than more gear.
C for sure.
studio monitors are just a sales gimmick. They make money because they look like NS10 size.
small speakers are really for long hours, at low volume, not for “flat studio monitoring”.. that’s what the mains are for, which used to be dialed with Amps and crossovers and 31 band for flawless extreme SPL and freq response 20-20k.
The industry follows the money, so we are stuck trying to turn a smart phone into a cinema wide screen
@@EffimRadio one can get flat monitoring on small speakers. I think what you are getting at is mix detail and distortion elimination which big high quality systems are far better for, at least if the music is complex and/or has natural instruments. The industry caters to volume sales for small speakers where simple home EDM/Rap etc production, and electronic sounds can survive that mix process. But not for tonally and timbrally challenging music... have genelec 1030a for close monitors but for the big mix I need a rack with the EQ, Digital crossovers feeding high quality multichannel amps and high quality drivers in 4 way speakers. Unfortunately this is not cheap, unless you can build your own system with used parts.. then studio level 4 way monitoring is gonna be £10,000 upwards
@@EffimRadio lol
Really liked the KH120's the most.
Will pair them with the KH720 subwoofer with DSP.
What studio desk is that? Looks amazing!
Listened to those with bose headphones, my favorites seem to be A and C since the others have too much highs imo, to the point the sound loses some of its warmth
With my bad phone speakers, all sounded more or less the same except D which was pretty aggressive
Same for me
C is the best for me me and why I purchased these speakers two years ago. Nice comparison video and validation that I made the right choice!
I like Mix D speakers the sound is really good I will be purchasing these. Thank You
B was by far my favorite. A and C were also okay. I was afraid of the results, because I own one pair of the ones used. Luckily, they are exactly pair B xD.
you liked B more because it has more bass lmao enough rap for god sake monitors are supposed to be flat
@@naegleriafowleri2230 O_o
Download completed, I'll watch this when I'll be free🔥
nice! Let me know which one you chose?
8030c has the nicest foundation to me. It's a little soft but could be mastered brighter. KH120 was also nice but the bottom end came out a bit 'bloomy'. Listening on ATCs. Obviously a lot has to do with the room and relative placement, which mix was done first, etc.
Happy New Year! Got to this one through today's video : ) When listening at first on my iPhone's speaker, I picked A and E as the best so I was surprised with your choices. After listening at my desk on Eris 8" and Sub monitors, I picked B although the bass on D felt good on the sub ; ) Speakers B gave the most clarity at both the high and low end IMO. The consumer's speakers make a big difference as well - mixing is hard for finding the best sound for all devices! How do most people consume music? AirPods?
Airpods, or small earphones are probably the most popular. Laptop/computer speakers are high up as well
Great review! I liked B, A, E, Thought D was almost harsh.
Very cool review. this is tough to do as you mention the variables(lots). Would be cool to know how far away the speakers are from wall... affects low end as you know. Additional, would be cool to mix brass and drums as well...... as they reveal weak point in speakers. good stuff.
I always wondered if the type of monitors matters that much when you put a correction curve on your output. Like f.e. i run sonarworks sound id on my Yamaha HS8 and they sound 'clean' / neutral and flat in my room (mostly treated but improveable). Like how much difference is noticeable when i get let's say the Adam A7X and measure the speakers according to my room with sonarworks sound ID and get a flat response again. In both cases both monitors sound clean and flat in my room and therefore similar??? Maybe the same?
So again my question is: do monitor types really matter when using them with response correction softwares? Does anybody know something i might miss here?
Thanks for another studio monitors video sir, this is very helpful.😃😄😀
Most welcome!
@@SanjayC 🙂
the valuable thing from this video was how you make different mix decisions based upon what you get to interpret from the differences of the studio monitors you're listening to
C sounded the most premium to me! I also like B and D though.
A was my least favorite. After you explained that you couldn't hear the low end while mixing, I was like "Ohhhhhh". Haha
Yes C was the winner! I thought D sounded "tinny"
I am so happy that Sanjay C always has insights on something I’m trying to decide in. Thank you Sanjay. Great to have this review for an expensive investment. ❤️🔥
Good to see you sir am always waiting for your videos 📹 😊
Thanks so much, Phoenix King! Which mix was your favorite?
@@SanjayC the one with the Adam audio I loved the clarity and vocal balance it wasn't too harsh
Great test, but can I just ask what that monitor you are using is and the size of it - been looking for a larger one for some time :)
Fun test. Thanks!
I think I like B, D & E.
The thing is, I'm appreciating the different nuances each is picking up.
And, I could see liking different ones, to work on different projects.
I would have to re-listen, several more times, to pick my universal.
If I were auditioning them, at home, I think I'd either use nature sounds, or Paul Young's "Come Back and Stay," to meter how they interpret range and complexity.
I'm curious as to whether you think that the fact that a tone-corrector is engaged affects the trueness of the speakers' sounds, or creates any additional effects not intended.
Hmmm....
Yes, a reference track when listening in person is the best way
Totally agree. B, D & E... C was the worst imo.... and I got the neumann kh 120 myself. I think they are awesome tho and good to mix on
A & C are the best to me for sure! A is quieter but sounds balanced, love how everything blends. C is balanced too but a little brighter. Really good showcase thanks for this Sanjay! I listened on my commercial Bose headphones. and then my Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitors. Both times, I still Picked A&C, this is just the way I like music to sound, this is how I want the mixes to be!
Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice.
I am an aspiring dance music producer and I am planning on improving my production this year and taking it all a bit more seriously and potentially making it into a living.
My current monitor is set up as follows. I have a set of Rokit 5 Rpg3 and a Focusrite 2i2.
I am currently in the market for a better / second set of monitors for another reference, however, I am and not sure what to get. This is what I am looking to achieve in my studio.
I want to be able to switch between 2 sets of monitors, dim the volume, mute the volume and also switch between stereo and mono and alos switch between headphones.
Also, I would like the new set of monitors to complement the frequency of my rockits I currently have, as in, when I flick between the 2 sets of monitors they don't sound much the same, but rather have different curses on the spectrum, etc for mixing like a car/iPhone/studio/club, etc
I have a DJ setup that I would like to channel through the same 2 sets of speakers which I am currently doing by using 1/4 jacks through the line inputs on the Focusrite 2i2. I also have a Rode NT1 but I don't use it much only when recording other Artists as I don't sing myself.
My budget is about €500. And I am currently considering the following:
Option 1
Keeping my current set up and buying
2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference)
Mackie Big Knob Passive
Option 2
Selling my Focusrite 2i2
Mackie Big Knob Studio
2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference)
Option 3
Either one of the interface options above
but changing the monitors to 2 x Adam T7V or similar?
Thanks and looking forward to hearing what you guys think.
My favourite is C. By the way, were the genelecs the only monitors not using the decoupling stands ? Yes they have their own pods but it doesn’t work as well as the other ones that you have, which makes them even more impressive considering also that were radiating sound closer to your desk! thanks for the video !
A good comparison, but please bring the Kali speakers into your monitor comparison. I got their LP-6v2’s, and I am very surprised how clear and clear they are, especially for the price. Please review ‘em.
ok mr sanjay, before the video starts, i am listening to a pair of DCM time windows (2x6" transmission line column response to 30hz) and a pair of mission 6" book shelves which have INSANE midrange presence. running from a vintage pioneer receiver. i'm saying this because i believe i have a pretty accurate system, and i'll use my focusrite interface output vs the PC line out. ok, let's rock. ok A was nice sounding. B a harsh edge to the highs. i easily guessed that was a ribbon tweeter. i'm a soft dome guy. c was pretty clean and tight D was louder and looser. E sounded the tightest and most balanced. I liked E and A, C. in conclusion, easy to hear speaker D's sloppy passive bass radiator and speaker B's harsh metal tweeter. i would be good with any of the other 3. I kind of like the detail in C and also E seems very neutral and clean. that was fun.
The net capacity size of all speakers to be compared should always be the same size so that the comparison would be fair and correct.
That focal shape mix sounds problematic. The Adam a little too. Genelec I'd put at number one but being a Genelec fan, I could see the Neumann being better if I was used to that sound.
With a larger model and GLM room correction I think you'd be amazed.
The Adams and Frontiers are my favorite, I’ve also like the Focals too but not as much as the Adams
Aside from the fact that RUclips is hardly a good way to evaluate audio quality the only mix that sounded noticeable different to me was mix D. The others sound about the same, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. You really don't want a monitor that sounds very different from others in the class. I listened to this video on a mid-market AV system (Polk TSi300 tower speakers, Polk Signature series S35 center channel and a Yamaha 8" powered sub). In my studio I recently acquired a 2.1 system consisting of an Adam Audio Sub10 and a pair of Adam A7Xs. I am very pleased with this system. Since setting it up I've spent hours just listening to CD albums, something I haven't done previously for years. Today I listened to albums such as Prokofiev's Cinderella Suite, Dave Alvin, Huey Lewis and the News, the soundtrack to "Life Is Beautiful" by Nicola Piovani and Juno Reactor. I've got the sub level dialed in so that orchestral music is appropriately balanced and EDM rattles your bones, as it should.
B. Found it to be the most balanced one 👍🏼
You definitely should have set the DIP switches on the Genelecs - in fact, all of the monitors should have had basic tweaks consistent with their instruction manuals for a given room type. Good comparison, though, and content creation for this kind of very imperfect method was top-notch.
I love that song, Sanjay C!
I actually really like this song. What's the name of this song? and where can I find it? And by the way, Mix B and C were my favorite.
sanjay you have a wonderful voice, both for singing and for dialog. big fan. have you any records out? j.
Nice demo. I read a lot of complaints about these self powered speakers generating hiss at idle, do you have any experience with this?
I didn't experience a hiss problem with any of these. That may be true for cheaper monitors
I liked A and C Mixes
This sound track is so amazing ! Will you release it?
Thanks so much! I need to finish it first! LOL! Which speakers did you like most?
I liked most the A C and E mixes
I like C best, following B and than D. Nice and interesting video on what happens using different speakers.
Important to note is that I listened to the mixes on Yamaha HS 5 ;)
For me your pooch was the clear champion, heads and tails above the rest! Great review friend.
Haha...I agree!
Are you interested to sell your ADAM or Generic open box speakers? I want to upgrade my monitors.
My top 3 are B,D and E
Btw sir, a very great video. Enjoyed it very much. Love from India
Awesome! Thank you! What speakers/headphones did you listen with?
@@SanjayC With my Audio Technica ATH M20x and around 10$ Bluetooth headphones
B, C, E those three are relatively similar and sounds great! A sounds flat, definitely would use it as a monitoring speaker but not for casual purpose for my taste. D was… Nah, i don’t wanna say about that.
B AND C SOOO SAVAGEE.... adam is really nice........ also i feel genelec is veryyyyyyy famous in the edm genre
i love the look of adam
awesome video sanjay......... how are u man???
Thanks! I’m good buddy. How are you?
@@SanjayC all cool man thanks for asking
Hey, what is your opinion on using correction softwares like Sonarworks. Do all of them sound almost the same when enabled the corresponding correction. I can't afford to use monitors, So I really don't know how they sound. My mixing is done in dt770.
From my perspective, I use room correction and it works for me. Each brand of studio monitors will sound different depending on the material and technology used to manufacture them. The only thing room correction does is to help flatten the frequency response as much as possible, but you still get the characteristics and tonality from the studio monitors due to their construction.
@@tylerdengler6960 thank you for this information :) and yeah! happy new year in advance
B was my favorite, and turned out to be the Adam's which I'm looking into exchanging my jbl 305s for anyway. So that was cool. Disappointed with the Outputs because they're a beautiful speaker and I like outputs stuff, but I felt like that mix had no life to it. They're probably GREAT speakers for listening.. more than mixing.
Thanks for the video!
You have the 305s as well? For budget monitors these are amazing! I also found the Adams to be my favorite in this demo.
In my cheap MPOW X3 earpods, Mix D was the most stimulating by quite a margin. All the rest sounded dull and flat in comparison. I've used Focal Trio 6 BE in the past and I they just didn't work for me. Hearing this really confuse me a lot.
Yo my man, give some cred to the puppy! He was in the vid chilling to your mixes too! Great videos by the way!
I would love to support you by downloading the song in this video. I love it! Is it available? Please link, if so.
Happy new year !!!!!
Happy new year!!
E is just so mature sounding compared to the rest, like it was mixed on a old tube console or and aged scotch whiskey.
My favorite considerably, with Genelec in a distant second.
Ironically, my favorite three mixes where the exact same as yours Sanjay!!!! Lol
Well here shopping for the Neumann KH 120 and picked mix C as my favorite. Guess I know what to do.
Kali IN-5's strapped to a Kali WS-6.2 subwoofer. A 4-way system that sounds wonderful in my new mixing room and only cost me £1500! 😯😎
Just a music lover, preferred C, then A, B, E and then D. Strange as I have Focal Electra speakers for home living room use.
listening through a Yamaha RS 700 paired with Polk Audio TSI's and C was by far the best mix. with B as a second and the rest had problems
Just based on the blind test and not watching the rest of the video yet, Mix B sounded the best to my ears. Looking forward to watching the rest and seeing what was what.
Wow another vote for B. What was your second choice?
@@SanjayC Mix D was my second choice, but I felt like the vocals, though they sounded great, were a little too prominent compared to Mix B. I didn't listen on consumer speakers or headphones though; listened on my IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors. I can't fit anything bigger on my tiny desk :(
@@SanjayC Just listened again on ATH-M40x headphones. Through these, Mix C sounded the best to me, followed by Mix B. And surprisingly Mix D sounded pretty harsh. 🤷♂
Is the shape good for mixing and mastering ?
More videos like this, please!😀
My choices was Genelec, Adam Audio, and Output. I'm satisfied of what i choose.
Wow...more votes for Output! I'm impressed and surprised too!
@@SanjayC thanks for showing this video. love your content man. keep it up
Great video and a catchy song! Not meaning to be negative after all the effort you've gone to but I don't see how this is really a good way for someone to choose which monitors are the best for them, or a balanced test. You could probably have mixed that song differently on the same set of speakers five different ways and ended up with similar results as you did here - depending on what "mood" you were in or how tired or alert you were at the time and how long you'd been listening/mixing to the same track etc.
I think also that most people who have less than perfect sounding rooms will probably use some kind of room correction software these days like Sonarworks and so the sound differences from monitor to monitor change from what they are straight out of the box and the differences between different makes and models after correction become less dramatic than in this scenario. (Don't mean to bitch - just my two cents)
now thats a smart way to do it :D we all have our own listening system me headphones I had for 10y now so I know how they sound vs my current monitors and a blind test mix will tell me more than a bad mic recording, I was between A and B, D sounded frankly atrocious ultra harsh I'm used to vinyl sound and I really don't like modern mixes that sound like they forgot mids and lows exist edit : ah ! not surprised by the focals I had Focal car speakers and subwoofer and to be honest I always tought they sounded "aggressive" it's funny that it made for a harsh mix too I would have tought you'd have mixed softer to compensate but no
I like B C D - I wanna know what song that is and were i can buy it ? I like that song a lot.
Great point. Learn your speakers!
A, B, C, idk why but D felt like someone forgot to turn of maximizer on the master channel, and E felt to hollow, was listening thru my Audio-Technica m50x
what speaker would you use with CDJ3000 dja9 mixer ?
i liked A and C
i don't know about speakers but A and C mix sounds good 🎉💕💕
The first ones had a more bass heavy mix, quite nice when listening on a phone
Yes, it was definitely because I over compensated, and I should've done that with the others I guess.
B and C and I can't pick a 3rd one. Listened with a DT 770 Pro using the Scarlett 2i2
C, E, B. Great video! Wish more people did this sort of thing to help train ears and compare
Wow...you liked the Output Frontier! Interesting. What did you like about that mix?
@@SanjayC I liked the warmth of the Output I think. But it came after the Focal shape which had that louder mix over all so I’m curious how that affected my initial listen. Glad to have these comparisons 🙏🏼
