The most important part of this video, for me, was where you pointed out that although the capacitor looked fine, the board from a distance looked fine, the acid from the capacitor was already doing serious damage. And Nichicon, being an excellent manufacturer of quality parts, might make one think it was good for that reason alone. Thanks for the very informative, interesting, educational, and enjoyable video!
Nice to see you again Peter! Nice job on the ts850. That one was in very good shape, just in time before start leaking the the capacitores all over the board! Best 73 Victor
In my experience, the bad caps are usually the "blue" ones, and the black ones are usually fine. If there is corrosion on the board, I neutralize any remaining electrolyte (acid) with baking soda and distilled water. I seal any bared traces with conformal coating to prevent oxidation... Keep up the great work...!!!
Thanks for the video. I have a Kenwood TS850 that belonged to my late Father who is SK. It was having alc issues so I had it gone through and recapped. New DC-DC board in the alc circuit. Back to working like new. Didn't think to have 60M opened up as well but not a big deal. I have it set up as a remote station using RemoteHams. 7 band vertical as my antenna. Run 10, 12, 15, 17, 20, 40 and 80M without using the atu. TX frequency limits in play on all bands for users other thanyself. Have it on from 4:30 AM to 8:30 PM 7 days a week. Have a number of others use it from time to time. Works like a champ! One of my favorite all time radios. You can see my Remote in operation on several of my videos. 73 from Canada. Rob, VE3PCP.
Good morning ! I just bought a superb Kenwood TS690S. I saw on RUclips a mod to open the 11m band simply by removing diode D27. Could you please tell me what you think and if this operation does not cause any damage? Thank you for your attention to my request. I wish you a very nice day.
Good morning and good video !! I also like cutting out the parts of replacing the Caps,,, A before and after worked very well. Thanks again for another fine video.
I had one of my HP frequency counters simply die one day and it was the exact same problem...could not tell a single through-hole electrolytic had begun to leak until I removed it from the PC board; once replaced everything was FB. TNX Peter and Happy Holidays! 73 - Dino KLØS
Great job Peter, TS-850 has the problem with capacitors leaking, well known but it's always great to see where to check in particular. Have a nice Christmas time my dear friend and best 73 de IW0HEX Pasquale.
A little preventive maintenance goes a long way. Nice catch on that leaky capacitor I bet that radio is going to last a long long time now. Great work as always. Hope you and your family have a great holiday. Merry Christmas and Happy New year's your way. 73 ND1B
Ufta! Another MARS mod. Great work as always, Peter. Guess you'll be checking all the 22uF caps as they are the ones to fail. 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
Thanks for this video! I have two of these old radios that were my best friends, who passed away a few years ago, and I've been resurrecting the older of the two. First one ( bit newer) was in the same shape as this beauty you just finished! The second one needs a new carrier board, acid from leaking caps everywhere! Seems like if the rig is used often, they stay healthier? Just a guess.
Hi Peter, I bought a TS850S in the early 90s and its display has finally gone off. So after watching your and other RUclipsrs' warnings about different capacitors leaking, I'm getting prepared to go in and start swapping them out. I'd like however to replace as many as possible with tantalum 125 degree. But in your latest video (two years ago) it looked like you were replacing its power board with the same Aluminum Electrolytic type although probably with a higher temperature rating? In short, could I ask should I replace caps with tantalum just on the Local Carrier board but not on the other ones where it looked like you again used Aluminum Electrolytic? Thanks a lot, Rob
I bought mine new in '94(~) I boxed it up about 20 years ago (moving / world travel) now I'm setting up shack again. I plan on taking a look eventually, but has it been determined the cause of the capacitors to start leaking? is it their age, or time in service (under power), or ?
For me, I balievd it's both. Because I have seen a video about an old radio still in the box, but the technician who made that video still suggested that it would be safer to replace the old capacitors with new ones even though it still looks nice same as what had been said in this video.
Hi Peter sure is good to see your video again it seems like it’s been a while. You did an excellent job on the radio on the preventative maintenance. The OM must really like the radio because it is definitely clean. Thank you for sharing the video and I hope you and your family best wishes. Hello from the Texas hill country. WD5ENH Steve
I have had my TS850S for a few months now, and I am very happy with it. But I was told it will not work with 11 meters, so just out of interest I went to 27.781.25 and it keyed up no problems. So I can only assume who ever had it before me had the radio opened up to all bands.
@@TRXLab It is interesting. But I looked at the Digi-Key and there are dozens of types of tantalum capacitors of the same values. Which type do you recommend?
Replacing old leaking capacitors seems to be a common practice in repairing any vintage equipment from the 70s? or 80s? I wonder if the manufacturing of capacitors today has reduced or eliminated the chances of leaking electrolytic capacitors given how damaging this issue is to the equipment.
Not always there are older units with still good caps. It depend really on the time the caps were produced. Today we still have this issues with cheap caps look how many monitors suffering from bad quality..
Having a radio of that age open, I would also automatically replace the lithium backup battery cell too. (as long as there is no possibility of a volatile DRAM "firmware" memory like the Icom ICR-71A, IC-271, IC-471, IC-1271, IC-745, IC-751/A, receivers! - shame on you ICOM!)
peter''''i just purchsed a ts-850s from a ham that just passed away''''it works great'''' but im wondering has it been recapped'''his wife said that he recently sent it to texas to have $400 worth of work done it but she has no idea what was done to it''''''also peter i cant tell if the ch mem battery has been replaced but it measured 3.3 volts''''''what do you think'''''and do you have any pointer's for me on this nice radio''''''its like brand new''''''''i want to use it for 30 more years''''''''thank you peter your great.
Your carrier board video gave me the confidence to take on the carrier board capacitor project, discovered when the dc-dc board failed. As ugly as what you found, but the job is done (I used multilayer ceramic caps) and it's working fine business, so far at least. Watching this, I realize that I should go back in to swap a few more that *look* ok. I see you've done some, but obviously not all, electrolytics. How do you know which ones should be replaced??
Hello sir, please help me,I have now a TS850 sat, like new,my father passes away some days ago 😢 and now the radio is on my desk. The only problem with the ts850 is that the power output on ssb is weak,70-80 max90w. Why? Such a big radio so small power....I was hoping to have around 120w like my old ts450.even my ft857 is more powerful. Is there a way to make it better? I really like it and I want it but I want to have a little bit more power. Best wishes and Happy Newyear from YO2DA,Voicu from România.
Hello sir, I am Jun from the Philippines. A TS850s is being sold by a friend for 28,000 Philippine peso together with the PS-50 power supply. Everything is in good working condition except for a weak looking display. I have learned from this video and from other videos the common problems that occur with this particular model of Kenwood. My question is, in your honest opinion sir, do you think I should buy it? If ever, it will be my first HF radio. I really would appreciate it very much.
This radio is for sure a good radio, except the aging problems it has. BUT I can't judge from the distance if the radio you got offered is worth the money it is asked for...

Yes but it not only Kennwood had that issue it is not their fault. Back in that time there war a general problem with Caps. You see that Kenwood used high quality caps only...Thanks for feed back

Klasse Video. Ich hätte meine gern auch einmal so fachgerecht gecheckt.

This is the one radio I will always regret selling. I have many newer radio's but the 850 was just superb. Ah well.
Yes this radio is still very good!
Wow that radio looks really sophisticated given that it was made in 1992!
Nice TS-850S. Love your videos - thanks.

Great video. What your view on tantalum caps? No leak but fail to short. Have they gotten better? Next. No change of the battery?
I have the same question. Why not new electrolytes? Laziness?
Yes in the past tantalum caps were a nightmare but that have changed in new product lines.
