Awesome, Peter. You have exhibited extreme patience in showing how to clean a circuit board. It gives great information for novices and a refresher course for ticketed hams. Many thanks for sharing this information for others to get benefit from.
Peter, As far as I am concerned your repair wins the beauty contest. But the real beauty is your superb craftsmanship and attention to detail. That is why your subscribers always look forward to seeing another video posted by you. Happy new year to you and your family and I look forward to another year of interesting videos from my mentor across the world.
+Todd Anonymous Hi Todd, thanks you very much for the kind words. I'm always glad if there is a need for my videos. Have a Happy 2016 for you and your family! 73
Thank you so much Peter! I got a TS-850S recently as my first rig and have been enjoying it until it started acting up the other day. Someone recommended that I take a look at that board. I am glad I did! It is in much worse shape than the one you repair here. Your video was very useful in helping determine if this repair is something I want to tackle myself. Cheers!
Peter, based upon this video I bought the LCR meter and I am so glad I did. The meter is a great addition to my workbench (I'm an electronics engineer ) and also for my Ham radio use. I just got a TS-850SAT from a fellow ham friend and I plan to watch this video over so I can remember all the details to check out this rig. Thank you so much for all your wonderful and very educational videos. Now figure out how to get the software that came with the meter to work ...
THIS GUY IS AWESOME.. WATCHED SEVERAL OF HIS VIDEOS SOME SEVERAL TIMES. I OWN A TS-850S. MY AUDIO WAS SO VERY LOW COULD NOT HEAR. SO I REMOVED THE IF BOARD CHECKED MY C187 AND FOUND IT TO HAVE NO CAPACITANCE. MY METER SAID 0.00 SO I REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE EXACTLY 470UF AT 25V. NOW HAVE ROBUST AUDIO . THANK YOU PETER...
Another great job Peter! I had one of those come through years ago, unfortunately the board was toast. Glad to see you resurrected it! Another Happy Kenwood :^)
Nice video, Peter! NICE JOB OF SAVING THAT BOARD! You are a real pro! Your customers are lucky to have you! I see a lot of the lazy repairman's nip off old the leads and solder the new ones to them, use thru hole on SMD, and they don't ever clean up that corrosive caustic electrolyte mess either. I just got a TS690 and am hoping I do NOT find a corrosive mess like that, and I pray it's not encroaching into those unobtainium chips. We call changing all the electrolytic caps, "Shotgunning" the radio, or amplifier, television, compressor limiter, or whatever happens to be open and on the bench at the time. It like we use a shotgun to spray in ALL new electrolytic capacitors, to eliminate problems, just like you would with a sawed off shotgun, and a spray bunch of outlaws with lead. Once you have it open there is NO EXCUSE for NOT CHANGING THOSE AND GETTING RID OF THEM BEFORE THEY FURTHER DAMAGE THE BOARD. You have the radio open, the boards are exposes, the soldering iron is hot, the parts bin is right there, and there is JUST NO EXCUSE! I worked for a real shyster who used to tell me to "leave those questionable parts in there, so the customer will return in 2,3,4, 6, 8 weeks, and we can charge him another $150 bench fee." I have some old aggressive cleaners that take the corrosion off, when nothing else will, but usually the solder mask comes off too. It is a method of last resort. Fiber glass abrasive pens, or even the old very abrasive ink erasers, kind of work for scrubbing off the corrosion. Yes, we do call that solder braid. I have bare copper braid, and a tinned copper braid impregnated with flux. I also have PCB repair kits with foil, and catalyzed thermo-set two part epoxy adhesive. Chloronated brake parts cleaner will dissolve the solder mask, so you can get under that soldermask, but our EPA has taken chloronated solvents off the market. The stuff also takes the corrosion off too, but I can't buy it anymore. It is illegal now. I have a few tiny bits saved from small canisters, bottles, and spray cans. I poured it into silicon gasketed whiskey flasks, because it will evaporate from the original cans. I saved it for emergency uses, like this. I used to be able to drive down to Mexico and buy the stuff, but no more.
Great job on a very difficult problem. People overlook vintage radio capacitors. In audio equipment of vintage age they can be restored to their former glory with a few component replacements. Surface mount is not for the newbie or the faint of heart. Great video and tutorial. Excellent as usual.
Hi Peter because of your video I looked into my TS-850. Fortunatly only one cap was leaking. It was the one that was already changed in your transceiver. Your video helped me with the repair. Many thanks! best 73´s and a happy new year 2016
+Bernd B. Hi Bernd, ah very good to hear that! I would recommend to test ESR and if not possible swap the other Caps as well! Thanks for feed-back . Happy 2016 73!
Well done Peter,An excellent job as usual,I also own the kenwood ts850 and after seeing this video I realise I too will have to take the covers off it and carry out an inspection on these boards..but after watching your video I will be more aware what to look out for and hopefully do as good a job as what you have done here in your video......Well done sir.......
Good save on the board, Peter. The solder braid is also known as Solder-Wic. And the Pen brush Firbergalss scratch brush. Thanks again for the great video. Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy new year. Greg
WHEN I REPLACED THESE CAPACITORS MY SOLDERING WAS POOR. SO I ORDER RADIAL CAPS. I BOUGHT ABOUT 20 THEY WERE CHEAP. USED 25 VOLTS. CHECKED EACH CAPS AND USED THE ONES CLOSEST TO THE 10UF. I HAD TO DO SOME SOLDERING THAT WOULD MAKE PETER CRINGE IM SURE. BUT I CHECK EACH ONE IN THE CIRCUIT FOR SHORTS. I HAVE A WORKING CAR BOARD ALL NEW CAPS...THANKS PETER FOR GIVING ME CONFIDENCE...
Enjoyable and interesting videos! Glad to see a great job saving a _throwaway_ SMD unit. My old Kenwood 520 has no SMD so re-caping might be a little easier. Almost all my test gear is 1980s through hole gear Hameg, Fluke and Hitachi so I can repair it.

Hello Peter, very nice repair job. Leaking capacitors can cause serious damage and are difficult to repair. I enjoy your video's and they started me to do my own repairs hi. Best wishes to you and your family
Very nice job had the same sort of problem with old video cameras realy a pity when you get one where the corrosion has gone to far and you can no longer save the board. but you did an exelent job.
+Craig Culverwell Hi Craig, yeah in the beginning when industry started with this kind of smd caps there must have been a production problem as we have a lot of different gear which is suffering from this... Thanks for comment. 73
HI i did this repair years ago and good to see it in detail here , There is issues with the 5V on the PLL becoming unstable sometimes too in the model so that is another one to watch , It is a great radio i do like it good performance i would not get rid of mine ok good informative video as always hope you had a good Xmas and happy new year
Good job as aways . I have repaired a number of these and read up on some history of this , apparently Kewood got a bunch of counterfeit caps in there earlier production numbers , there was a ser. # where they found & used known to be good caps , that also coincided an upgraded chip set , as I remember 6632 new numbers . I now own 3 of the 850's , one early production & 2 later production , they sound so good on recv. & trans. that I resist selling for newer rig .
+KD0CAC Hi John, fully agreed these 850's are really great radios and I fully understand that you keep this radios! Thanks for comment and additional infos 73 Peter
Hi Peter. Thanks for the interesting video. It is my understanding that the caps with the blue printing, tended to leak more then the ones with the black printing. The black ones were used in the late model 850s.
Thanks to this video, I took on this capacitor replacement project. Plenty of leakage, but the rig was still working. You should recognize that about 500 views of this video were me, as I gained confidence... 😉 I couldn't get my copper as shiny as yours, but the acid is gone and the board has been covered with solder resist again (looks like a two year old's coloring book unfortunately... 😬). The radio powered up again, so I'm optimistic it will continue for a while into the future! I'm wondering how you know which caps should be proactively replaced elsewhere in the radio? I asked this question in a more recent 850S video too - hopefully you will see one or the other! I wouldn't have attempted this without your RUclips help, so a big thank you!
+The Radio Shop Thank you Buddy! Yes so all the brands do have their own weaknesses... Ähm Buddy by the way do you receive your personal messages over youTube?? 73 my friend!
+TRXBench Hi Peter. No I did not receive a personal message. I sent you one yesterday and was wondering if you received it. Sometimes youtube does that. If you want to email me buddymclawhorn@sprintmail.com That way I be sure to get messages. 73 :)
Fantastic..I have repaired a few of these ..I seen one burned so bad i could stick my pinky finger through the board near that regulator..Them things are a mess
Well thanks for the video and now I will check my TS-850s and see if I have the same problem. I like the radio and it has a very broad banded internal antenna tuner
What a clean job .. lol I'm here I want to change by my self the anteena cable on my old FT3000 I know it's super easy job to someone like you but super hard to me .. wish me good luck I never see any of my radios from inside ..
good work! i myself am working on a old PC main bored that has a few leaking caps from the capacitor plague. I only doing it so i can have a old PC to run windows 98 and a lot of older Dos games.. keep that vintage stuff working.
Great work on that I thought at first you couldn't fix that but you got it all ok you very good at your job I wish you were in Australia I have a cb radio all rusty I like fixed but need some one local thanks
NO-NO seriously, your video is great, i´m begining with HAM and there is so many good info. Especialy about this 850s i think about buy it, from 2hand, now i know where to watch a what to check. I have in my shack realy old one Yaesu FT-840 and FT-857 so, specialy for FT-840 is the time to check capacitors, i love this radio and i dont want see him to die, beacause i don´t check old capacitors. (sorry for my english) Thank you again 73
Very good Peter👍👍 The coper braid is caled "solder wick" by the way.I will also recomend the chanel EEVblog (by Dave Jones) Very educating and also VERY ENTERTAINING!!!!😄😄👍I am new on your chanel but i will probably see all your videos eventualy😄And please ecsquse if my writing is wrong, I'm norwegian 😊
A NOTE ABOUT CHECKING UR CAR BOARD. WHEN I FIRST CHECKED DID NOT SEE ANY PROBLEMS BUT AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF USE, THINGS STARTED TO ACT FUNNY WITH MY RIG. SO LOOKED AGAIN AND THEY LEAKED. SO DONT WAIT, CHANGE THEM ASAP...
This is resly the only correct way to remove the acid from the capicitors, great job. one remark.....please use, and advice to use ESD protection during the job.. 73 Rien PA3GAG
+Rien van der Vorm Hello Rien, absolutely correct, your remark regarding the ESD protection, but I know Peter personally, I´ve been many times in his lab and I know, that he wears the ESD protection every time on his right leg. He only forgot to mention it.
+Rien van der Vorm Oh ja, good remark really forgot to mention it. I'm so familiar with using it that I often forget to talk about it. Werlaf gave the right answer on that already :-) 73 Peter
Would it help to wash the area that has electrolytic leakage, wash it down with vinegar a few times before covering it with lacquer to dilute/ neutralize the acid? I do this with leaking batteries. Would it have the same effect on electric capacitor acid?
Hi Peter, Excellent tutorial as always. I've recently picked up a TS-850S in superb condition, however, like per this video, it has leaking SMD Capacitor's on the carrier board. Can you please tell me the name of the tweezer dual soldering iron you have, as I would like to buy one to do this job? Many thanks, & keep up the good work.
Nice video as usually, little bit long :) but it's OK. My suggestion is to apply some sodium bicarbonate to this board to neutralize acid residue. After that clean it using IPA and after that soldering and apply plastic. Only to prevent that residue of acid from capacitor can still damage the copper on the PCB. I think mechanical cleaning using fiberglass brush is not enough.
+BFX chanel Hi, thanks for the hint, will check it out. Yeah I know it was a little bit long just wanted to give as much as possible support if anyone is going to do it.. All the best
+TRXBench yes those dds chips is known to fail.ts 690 and 450 have 2 of them only, and 850 have 4 and are not produced anymore...i have 2 of them new in original package, from my time when i work for kenwood repair center..good job peter.
thanx for response.actuly i am asking this qusetion because i don't know how to connect elements with this kind of boards which is as you said its double layer boards
Good video , I've also owned many 850's over the years , I've also got a similar video of replacing the caps on the carrier board , Recently I acquired another 850 I replaced the caps in that to , Carrier PCB, Display PCB and the couple around the audio amp as these can be problematic as well , I've only just had in a replacement carrier PCB for the 850 , It does away with the four DDS chips and has a single purpose programmes IC to do the job if the four DDS chips ... That's also in my site ... Regards de Gw0wvl 👍
How has your experience with been with that new replacement PCB carrier board for the TS-850S been? I see them for sale out of Ukraine and Italy but can not find any reviews on their performance. I think for my situation I would like to purchase one but would just like to know what some thoughts were on it. Thanks!
Hello Peter, I have a kenwood ts940s now for a year, very nice rig nice audio etc etc, untill sundaymorning 1-3-2021 the radio was dead, no power nothing, u think it is the power supply?thanks 73 PD5CZB Cor from Holland
Excellent video Peter. Great repair. You make it look so easy lol. What was he thinking with the cap beside the regulator?? God knows. Happy new year my friend. George
+Irishman1127 Hi George, glad to see you here :-) Thanks for feed-back, yes may look easy but with acid on the solder points they don't reflow.. So it is really a fight to maintain the pads.. happy 2016, 73 Peter
Nice job Peter! What did you finally use to get down to the copper level on the PCB? You mentioned sand paper so I'm just curious as the abrasive fiberglass pen can only go so far. BTW, you have to be careful with those pens as the fiberglass strands that come off of the pen can be really nasty if you happen to transfer some into your eye or get under the skin of your fingers as they can migrate under the skin's surface (not a good thing!). You can see the very tiny "whiskers" on the board in the video after you used the pen. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 73 - Dino KL0S
can you do video on kenwood ts-930 preventing maintenance rx go out then tx shut off turn back on it's ok sometimes love yor video's i learn alot please help me lol
What about the display board? You said that has the same bad capacitors. Perhaps not all units have those caps on the display board? Did you check it and determine they were OK? Thanks for this video, great as always!
+Herbert Susmann Hi Herbert, yes but I didn't put all into this video as it is already to long. The basic procedure is the same and there is a lot of stuff in the internet.. Thanks for stopping by. 73
OK, thanks for clarifying this. I figured you would have checked it also. Do you know what brand of capacitors those are? Sure hope they are not making those anymore!
Very nicely done, sir! I'm glad you ended up replacing the bodged capacitor as well. Just one question: It appears that the replacement capacitors are 16v rated like the failed originals. Would it have been better to replace them with 25v capacitors to prevent this sort of damage from occurring again?
+DainBramage Hi Dain, thanks for feed-back! Well I don't think that this caps were failing due to a voltage overload as we are only dealing with 5V on the PCB it is rather more a production error so 16V is more than okay. 73 Peter
+TRXBench That makes sense. My mistake was assuming that it was a 13.8V circuit. I agree with you, 16V caps should be more than adequate for a 5V circuit, especially since you are using good quality replacements.
Peter, Excellent video. I subscribed about half year ago and have finally watched all your videos. I have learned a few techniques I can put to use in trouble shooting equipment. Also learned much from Paul Carlson's channel. I see how it is sometimes difficult to work on equipment. I'm surprised the electronics industry does not have a chemical to stop the corrosion from the electrolyte in electrolytic capacitors. You now have me worried. I am starting back into amateur radio after being off the air for 30 years. I recently upgraded to General. I have a elderly (1980) Yaesu FT-901DM that I have not used for 30 years. Do you know of any problems that may occur with that vintage radio before I apply power?
+Donald D'Egidio Hi Donald, thanks you very much for the kind words! Well the question is if the industry really is interested in a chemical most likely they are more interested in selling new products. Oh yes be careful taking old gear back into service after a long perido. Watch my video Tutorial -How to take a Cobra back into service after 25 years- for more details.. 73
+TRXBench Peter, Used the tutorial with the light bulbs and the FT901DM powers up. Receive functions seem to be OK, but when I try to transmit into dummy load I get no plate current meter reading and no PO meter reading. An external wattmeter does show power output. I do not have the equipment to perform any serious diagnostics. Don't know if I should spend any money getting it repaired. I have limited income and wish I could do it myself.
Peter, I have a Flex1500 that will be in use soon. Still collecting all the bits, but it is only 5 watts output. The 901DM was 100 watts. My triband beam is old and needs maintenance. Don't have any other antenna now. I have a ZS6BKW (G5RV variant) multi-band dipole to install, but I need help because of low back pain. I will eventually get it up and back on the air. :-)
TRXBench, thanks for sharing, I love the idea of fixing these radios. You make it fun. My question to you is are there ways to remove the yellow counting to get to the corsion?
TXBench, actually a typo.. What I meant to say was the yellow lacquer surface painting on the board. I noticed you had to scrub it off before you could proceed.
Ah okay you probably mean the solder stop mask. Well I have done it with glass fever and sandpaper but may be that there are chemicals as well but I don't know that sorry All the best Cheers.
Hi Sir, that's a great job you've done on this beauiful receiver!!! I was wondering if I could send my faulty Flex3000 to you. It's problem is that it powers up fine, but 'Powersdr does not recognise it, it keepos saying 'Device unavailable' . Please let me know, if this is viable. I reside in the UK. Thanks in advance. Walter.
Hi Peter! I got here "nice" issue in my TS850S....need to say I'm desperate a bit with that... How to contact with You? Congrats for your work with videos here...AWESOME! 73!
+Ham4Ham Hi, I do not remember that I saw a leaking one but earlier production tantalum are going to short out and literally explode. I have seen that very often... Thanks for comment! 73
I apologize if this is a stupid question. Does the TS850 SAT have the same problems. I am thinking of buying my first radio, a used TS850 SAT. Thank you for any info you could provide. Enjoy your videos.
How is it possible such brand like kenwood use low quality capacitors' for such a dream machine? Or is it normal ?I have ICF2010 from 1994 noting leaks!!!
Hello Again ! I wonder if it is possible, having the same values available, to replace those e-caps with tantalum caps, these will not leak ! What can you tell about that possibility ? 73!
+CT1ELP Hi Pedro, well this question is more complex as one think. In the past we had the rule of thump Tantal caps only for devices with batteries or in parts of a circuit with NO low impedance. Today Tantal caps have significantly improved but even in newer technical data and application sheets you find: It is important to ensure that the voltage across the terminals of the capacitor never exceeds the specified voltage rating. In the case of low impedance circuits, the capacitor is likely to be stressed by current surges. In circuits which undergo rapid charge or discharge a protective resistor of 1Ω/V is recommended. If this is impossible, a derating factor of up to 70% should be used. So you see it still has to be considered very carefully and the production costs increase if you put it in a low impedance portion of the circuit... Hope that helps as explanation. 73's
Hi Peter, I just discovered that the Noise Blanker of my TS 850S is not doing its work? Any idea or recommendations on this issue? Thanks in advance for your earliest reply.

Hi Peter. Thanks for the interesting video. It is my understanding that the caps with the
blue printing, tended to leak more then the ones with the black printing. The black ones
were used in the late model 850s.
+bob smith Hi Bob, yes the early production cap's definitely have a serious issue. Thanks for comment 73
Great video Peter, all the very best to you and yours in the New Year . Thumbs up and regards Bob (UK)
+Bob Mellor Hello Bob, thanks you! Have a happy 2016! 73
Thanks to this video, I took on this capacitor replacement project. Plenty of leakage, but the rig was still working. You should recognize that about 500 views of this video were me, as I gained confidence... 😉
I couldn't get my copper as shiny as yours, but the acid is gone and the board has been covered with solder resist again (looks like a two year old's coloring book unfortunately...
Very good, like it!
Another good repair video Peter. Well done.Icom has their bad ribbon cables, Kenwood has their leaky smt caps.
Great job again, looks like that board got rescued just in time...
Bud...
+budleyca1 Hi Bud, thank you. Well may be it was already a bit to late. We will see. happy 2016
All the best for 2016...
Excellent work on this very delicate board! I wish you another successful and healthy year.
Jim,N1UVK
+Chrysiotis Hi Jim. yes acid made it tricky to work on the board. Thanks and HNY!
Very professional repair Peter, very nice indeed.
Cheers
John
+orbiter8 (John) Thank you John! Will watch your new video tonight! 73 Peter
Another great repair/maintenance video! Thanks so very much for posting your videos. I really enjoy them and learn a lot from you.
+Nicholas Hyer Hi Nicholas, I'm always glad that you like it 73
Fantastic..I have repaired a few of these ..I seen one burned so bad i could stick my pinky finger through the board near that regulator..Them things are a mess
+tim jude Hi Tim, yes the acid is very aggressive.. Thanks for watching 73
Very good repair Peter- as always!
+Alan Cordwell Thank you Alan have a happy 2016
TRXBench you too Peter!
Well thanks for the video and now I will check my TS-850s and see if I have the same problem. I like the radio and it has a very broad banded internal antenna tuner
Hope you 850 is fine...73
Best wishes Peter for 2016,
I like to see your repair video's and all the info you give is useful.
By the way you have verry nice measuring equipment.
+Rien van der Vorm Happy 2016 Rien and again Thank you 73
What a clean job .. lol I'm here I want to change by my self the anteena cable on my old FT3000 I know it's super easy job to someone like you but super hard to me .. wish me good luck I never see any of my radios from inside ..
Thanks Ahmed and good luck with your project! 73
Outstanding work. Well done. 73’s Lynton.
good work! i myself am working on a old PC main bored that has a few leaking caps from the capacitor plague.
I only doing it so i can have a old PC to run windows 98 and a lot of older Dos games.. keep that vintage stuff working.
+Matt K Hi Matt, yes fully agree keep the vintage stuff working :-) Thanks for comment..
Very nice repair job looks good to me. Those capacitors are nasty when they start leaking.
+mac theknife Hi, yes fully agree. Thanks for comment 73
Great work on that I thought at first you couldn't fix that but you got it all ok you very good at your job I wish you were in Australia I have a cb radio all rusty I like fixed but need some one local thanks
+Kriss Bartlett Hi Kriss, thanks for comment! Yeah Australia would be an option to live :^) 73
Thank You Peter. Very nice video!

+Barry Kelly Hi Berry, thank you very much! 73
Nice job... Im glad to see this old rigs still working... 73 ;)
Thanks for watching 73
NO-NO seriously, your video is great, i´m begining with HAM and there is so many good info. Especialy about this 850s i think about buy it, from 2hand, now i know where to watch a what to check. I have in my shack realy old one Yaesu FT-840 and FT-857 so, specialy for FT-840 is the time to check capacitors, i love this radio and i dont want see him to die, beacause i don´t check old capacitors. (sorry for my english) Thank you again 73
all is fine it was NOT meant ironic in any way!
This is an excellent presentation. Great example of a surface mount repair. 73 kd1na
+David Robertson Hi David, thanks you, always glad that you like the videos! 73
Another fantastic video Peter. Very best wishes for 2016.
+rupert handford Thank you Rupert and happy 2016
Excellent repair work
Thak you ! 73
Oh how i hate those fibre glass pens , when they get in your skin.
Great vid , thanks
+Chipz0r Oh yes you are soooooo right :^) Thanks for comment 73
Thank you very much all the valuable advices of yours😊
Very appriciated👍💪
Thx!🙏🏻😉
I aleays liked the 850's and 940's VFO knob vs the one on the 756 or the FT-1000D or MP.
Hi, welcome to my channel and thanks for feed-back! Enjoy my videos Cheers
Another great repair ... big 73 from Brazil - PY7DJ
+DJ Caverna Haroldo Bradaschia Neto Hi Neto, thank you. All the best an 73!
Excellent video, very informative and entertaining 😊👍👏
Thanks John!
turned out to be a very nice job
+David Bohanan Hi David, thank you
very good repair thanks for video
+DENNIS N Thank you Dennis!
Would it help to wash the area that has electrolytic leakage, wash it down with vinegar a few times before covering it with lacquer to dilute/ neutralize the acid?
I do this with leaking batteries. Would it have the same effect on electric capacitor acid?
Very nice Peter! a Big THUMBS UP! 73's de K8KEM
Thank you David! 73
Hi Peter,
Excellent tutorial as always.
I've recently picked up a TS-850S in superb condition, however, like per this video, it has leaking SMD Capacitor's on the carrier board.
Can you please tell me the name of the tweezer dual soldering iron you have, as I would like to buy one to do this job?
Many thanks, & keep up the good work.
thanks for the video thank goodness my radio has been done
Nice video as usually, little bit long :) but it's OK.
My suggestion is to apply some sodium bicarbonate to this board to neutralize acid residue. After that clean it using IPA and after that soldering and apply plastic.
Only to prevent that residue of acid from capacitor can still damage the copper on the PCB.
I think mechanical cleaning using fiberglass brush is not enough.
+BFX chanel Hi, thanks for the hint, will check it out. Yeah I know it was a little bit long just wanted to give as much as possible support if anyone is going to do it.. All the best
Tnx for your video Peter. Great job !!! HNY. 73s de Pasquale IW0HEX
+Pasquale IW0HEX Thank you Pasquale! happy 2016 my friend 73's
good news is that new DDS board is developed ,with only one modern DDS chip ,it is available via e bay...so more ts850 can be saved
Nice. how did you remove the electrolytic? sand paper? Tantal capacitors would be a better replacement (e.g. 10uF, 35V for higher voltage margin)
Hello Peter. Nice job! 73's
+Yvo Muniz (ALPHA TELECOM) Hello Yvo, thanks you very much my friend! All the best to Brazil 73
+TRXBench yes those dds chips is known to fail.ts 690 and 450 have 2 of them only, and 850 have 4 and are not produced anymore...i have 2 of them new in original package, from my time when i work for kenwood repair center..good job peter.
Thanks for this video, is it possible to clean the acid by putting board in an ultrasonic cleaning bath?
Most likely not but I'm not chemist and don't know a cleaning supp to ultrasonic
Nice repair
+allan mitchell Glad that you like it and thanks for stopping by. 73
Part #'s for those caps? Newark/Digikey etc..
Great job.
Thanks for feed back
thanx for a such great job..but why didint you show us how to install the new capacitors?in this board
Well videos are getting too long so I can't show anything in every single video sorry for that. Thanks for watching
thanx for response.actuly i am asking this qusetion because i don't know how to connect elements with this kind of boards which is as you said its double layer boards
That PCB looks very good where did you get it from?
@@TRXLab He's probably talking about the board that's available on eBay. Search for 'Kenwood TS-850S CAR unit board'.
Sensacional repair Peter!!! You're fantastic!!!
Thanks a lot
+Mauricio M. Falcao Thank you Mauricio !! 73 Peter
+Dino Papas Hi Dino, yes the fiberglass pen did the job. Yes you are right this pens are nasty I should wear gloves.. have a happy 2016 73 Peter
Peter Outstanding repair pointers. Is there also a problem with the 940s?? Thank You
Hi Wayne, well some 940s has Seen my lab as well 73
can you do video on kenwood ts-930 preventing maintenance rx go out then tx shut off turn back on it's ok sometimes love yor video's i learn alot please help me lol
+DainBramage yeah good quality parts are key!
Peter,
Excellent video.
+TRXBench Peter,
Used the tutorial with the light bulbs and the FT901DM powers up.
+Donald D'Egidio Donald, put by some money and wait a while and buy something newer or new...All the best and 73's
Peter,
I have a Flex1500 that will be in use soon.
Great Job my friend.......73s
+Chris „Sir Cable“ Ortiz Thank you Chris! 73 and Happy 2016
May I ask sir, are you saying that it is expensive to maintain this radios?
very good repair
thanks for video
Follow your video
73.
+hussain alonzi Thank you Hussain, glad that you like it.
TRXBench, thanks for sharing, I love the idea of fixing these radios. You make it fun. My question to you is are there ways to remove the yellow counting to get to the corsion?
+Pierre Lataillade Hi Pierre, thanks for watching. I'm not sure what you mean with yellow counting??? 73
TXBench, actually a typo.. What I meant to say was the yellow lacquer surface painting on the board. I noticed you had to scrub it off before you could proceed.
Ah okay you probably mean the solder stop mask. Well I have done it with glass fever and sandpaper but may be that there are chemicals as well but I don't know that sorry All the best Cheers.
thank TX for the respond.... have a good day
Tnx good Job. 73 Peter
+notfallmed vielen Dank. Alles Gute und 73
great video thanks
Thank you Jeff 73
I recently got one minus the power cord which power cord do I use.
Hi Peter great video. Do tantalum capacitors have this same issue with time?
+Ham4Ham Hi, I do not remember that I saw a leaking one but earlier production tantalum are going to short out and literally explode. I have seen that very often... Thanks for comment! 73
Is there a better solution in terms of using electrolytic capacitors ie different capacitors ?
not really maybe in some cases tantalum..
I apologize if this is a stupid question. Does the TS850 SAT have the same problems. I am thinking of buying my first radio, a used TS850 SAT. Thank you for any info you could provide. Enjoy your videos.
No reason to apologize. The TS 850 SAT has the exactly identical design so yes it may have the same problems. hope that helps 73
What kind of sanding tool did you use in the final step to remove the remaining corrosion? Or did you somehow do it by gentle hand sanding?
+Joseph Gutwirth Hi Joseph, I was using a fibreglass pen for removing it. Thanks for watching 73
Very good
+wade hicks Thank you. 73
How is it possible such brand like kenwood use low quality capacitors' for such a dream machine? Or is it normal ?I have ICF2010 from 1994 noting leaks!!!
had the same problem tracks a bit sad replace caps with tantilum beads no paste to leak over the board .. jeff .. m0prf
Thanks for stepping by ! 73
Today Tantal caps have significantly improved but even in newer technical data and application sheets you find: It is important to ensure that the voltage across the terminals
of the capacitor never exceeds the specified voltage rating.
Hi Peter,
I just discovered that the Noise Blanker of my TS 850S is not doing its work? Any idea or recommendations on this issue? Thanks in advance for your earliest reply.
+Özer Öztürk Hi Özer, well to many root causes possible... hard to answer on remote. Sorry for not having a better answer. 73
Hi Peter. I was just brain storming... Thanks for your valuable reply.
