  • Skyrim is a timeless classic. The original 2011 release is even better as far as performance on PC goes, thanks to it's DX9 support and compatibility with older hardware. Today we're taking a look back at Bethesda's suggested system requirements for the game and seeing how well it runs in 2020.

      Besides the requirements being rather vague, it also depends on where you look.
      1.7 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM, a DX8.1 capable graphics with support for shader 2.0 is what seam says.
      Some info from back then say recommended are a 2.4 GHz CPU and a DX9 card as recommended.
      And it was wild with DX9, besides basic DX9, there were also DX9.0a and DX9.0b which only ran on ATI or nVidia respectively, before "united" in DX9.0c, some older cards like the FX series could technically do DX9, but were awfully slow, so some games, HL2 included, defaulted to run in DX8 on it. Oh, and neither 1.7 nor 2.4 GHz say anything about what they scale on. Depending on the game a Pentium 4 with 2.4 GHz was either slower than a 1.6 GHz Athlon or faster than a 2.2 GHz Athlon. So which CPU to test?
      Actually found some old review where it took a Athlon 1800+ and a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 to be "not stuttery" (with no mention on actual framerate) in 1024x768. and in another one either a FX 5900 Ultra or Radeon 9600 Pro to go over 35 fps.

    There's a bit of misinformation here:
    1. Going above 60 fps is possible without any bugs. Look into the fMaxTime ini tweak. This changes how much fps the game is tied to.
    2. For most midrange pcs that support it, Special Edition is superior to the original in terms of performance when you go into the ini and disable many of the effects which make SE better visually (Volumetrics, for example). It is also far better optimized on the CPU side of things, eg looking down from dragonsreach no longer tanks your fps unlike the original.
    3. Special Edition is well known to be much more stable when modded. Far fewer crashes and bugs.

  • @Xelluse
    @Xelluse 3 года назад

    Just do not forget, that in 2011 not all players were using 1080p and most of recommended settings were for 900p, 1080p became a standard in late 2012 for PC when new technology makes them cheaper (yes, there were ppl, who used even 2k, but this was not a standard for 2011 and 2k was like 8k today). Even by Nvidia recommended Maximal resolution for GTX 260 was 1600x900 and best and most common was 1366x768, so FPS will be higher if we will lover resolution to 2011 standards recommended by Nvidia themself.
    Also do not know why, but not just me have the same problem, but vanila Skyrim on Windows 10 Pro for me shows 40-50FPS without mods, but on XP it shows 60FPS (GTX1060).

      Wow, I was rockin an Athlon 64 x2 5600+ and a 9600GT 1GB. Had 4GB DDR2 800. Did not play this game well. It rocked at Oblivion but not Skyrim. Skyrim is what forced my upgrade. Phenom II x4 965, 16GB DDR3 1600 Kingston Hyper X Genesis, HD 6870 that never worked and was RMAd for a HD 7850 2GB. Skyrim (And GTA V to an extent) also forced my next upgrade as SE came out and ran like a slob on it. God Rays dropped me to 30fps. So, FX 8350, same mem, 240 GB PNY SSD, RX 480 8gb and it was all gravy till I went back to Intel. That's when I realized Skyrim was made to run on an Intel CPU with Nvidia GPU and no matter how much AMD I threw at it from that era I would never get the same performance. Not until Ryzen a little while later. Thank you for that trip down memory lane!

    I am playing "Vanilla" Skyrim on my 8 (or 7?) year old i5-2500K (non-overclocked) with 2 x 2 GB DDR3-1333 RAM and an ASUS RadeonHD 6870, in Windows 10 Home (1909/18363.1139), and it runs just fine (knock on wood).
    I was/am also playing the same "Vanilla" Skyrim on my Ryzen 5-1600 (non-overclocked) with 2 x 4 GB DDR4-2666 RAM. First with a 1050Ti and then a 1650 Super.
    I had this faint "micro stuttering", which did not seem to change much by playing with the settings.
    I upgraded to a R7 3700X (non-overclocked; I don't do such things) , 2 x 8 GB DDR4-3200 RAM and an ASUS 2060Super, and said "stuttering" is gone.
    Admittedly, the i5 is being used together with an old 1600x900 HP monitor, while the Ryzen 7 uses a 1920x1080 display, that works at 60 Hz instead of 144 Hz, due to the flying horses and stuff.
    - What does old hardware do better than newer hardware?
    - How does code influence the in-game experience, I am wondering.

    On 7th gen consoles it was really bad. 640p internal upscaled to 720p on the XBox 360 and 600p internal upscaled to 720p on the PS3 with what seems to be the medium preset on PC more or less. Also, while performance on XBox 360 was mostly steady 30fps throughout, performance on the PS3 dropped to the low 20s when there were particle effects and action on screen, but even just peacefully walking around it would rarely hit the 30fps mark. PS3 players truly got the other end of the stick with that one.

    2:14 Actually the 60fps limit isnt really bug, since its cause by the physics engine not being made to handle 60+fps, thus not bug, more of unintented "feature"

  • @F2Ptaxi

    Skyrim LE is really hard to benchmark due to the game engine limitation with the cpu usage. More often than not, it is noticeable in some areas like Solitude and Riften. Whenever you face a certain direction you will get framedrops. But not because the gpu can't handle it.
    5:57 and 6:08 are good examples.
    Look at the cpu/gpu usage and the fps. Game engine is choking the hardware harder than Hermaeus Mora's tentacles.

    To fix the 60 FPS physics glitches, you can add this to Skryim.ini:
    [HAVOK]
    fMaxTime=0.0166
    ----------------------
    The formula is as follows: 0.0166 = 1.0 / 60 FPS
    Change that value to suit your desired framerate.

    Looking back I wish Skyrim had come out on PC only in 2011 and taken full advantage of PC hardware. The game was made on the xbox 360 and then ported to the PC and PS3. Dark times indeed. Maybe Skyrim could have looked as good as Crysis a PC exclusive from 2007

    I remember when I first got the game back in 2011. Tried running it on the HD3850 we had in our PC back in the day. FPS was doable. The thing that made it unplayable was the lack of available memory. The textures for the dragons we were so excited for didn't get loaded in, leading to my character constantly getting killed by an invisible fire breathing entity XD. Looking back, the problem wasn;t the graphics card though, it was the system RAM. The PC had 4 GB's. While theoretically enough, it was also my dad's work PC so there were a lot of things running in the background including sometimes my dad logging into another account in the background. XD

    When Skyrim came out, I played it on the family Windows Vista laptop. I could have got it on PS3, but I wanted mod support. I have no idea what the spec was besides running Vista, but between the poor performance and the fact that sometimes locations wouldn't even load properly, I don't think it met the minimum requirements.

    Seeing Skyrim again makes me wish I still had my ps3 save. It was my first and I stopped selling gems and items after I learned that potions were extremely valuable. I made a giant horde in my house at Whiterun. Gems, legendary items, golden ingots, basically anything that was shiny and rare got put into a giant pile. If I ran through it my game would lag and sometimes to fix it I had to restart my console. It was great. My next playthrough on PC I'm going to do the same thing and see how much stuff I can pile up before my 1080ti and r7 2700x burst into flame.

    Creation engine's framerate tied physics system always baffled me considering that a book I read on unity covered how to avoid this very thing within the first chapter. I understand, two different engines, but the fact they consider it to be such a trivial thing to do as to teach how to NOT do it so early really just blew me away. Bethesda going to Bethesda I guess.
