Part 2 will show you the full review and I'll upload samples of the video so you can judge quality for yourself. That will be up in a couple of days.
Initial impressions of the Sony are that it feels incredibly well built and balanced and the new screen is extremely clear. The macro facility is incredible - I just took some test shots, hand-held by the light of a single bulb and they came out really well. Colour accuracy wasn't 100%, but you'll see that on the next video.
I'll be uploading those test images with the review video.
If you guys have any questions, please leave a comment and ask away. I'll be happy to try to answer your questions for you.

2021. still have it. still use it.
The DSC HX9V is a really great camera. It gives really nice results and it's excellent for video so you've got a great start with that camera.
The principles of how to use the HX9V are really the same as you would use on an expensive SLR, so anything you learn with that camera can be used on any other cameras you buy.
I should be able to make that video tomorrow, that I promised you. I think seeing these things will be so much easier than reading about them.
The biggest benefit of the SLR design was that you could tell what you'd get in the photo, before you took it. It also made focusing a lot more accurate and the bright sun wasn't so much of an issue.
Most modern cameras of all types don't really have a problem showing you what you'll get in the photo. Some of the non-SLR types still have problems in bright sunlight.
I use this camera, and honestly it's great for videos and is cheap, such a steal in my opinion
Steven is an incredibly polite guy, isn't he? I think it must be because I'm so old!!
I'm glad you go this - it's a great camera. I ended up keeping mine, although I had intended to sell it originally.
You can't normally damage a camera by pushing the buttons. The worst that normally happens is your settings would be wrong and your picture might not be perfect.
Is there something specific you need help with? I don't know if I'll be able to make an entire step by step video series, but if you have some questions just let me know. I'll try to answer them for you.
Those numbers indicate the focal length of the camera.
Focal length is 4.28mm to 68.48mm
On a traditional 35mm camera, that would be the same as a lens of 24mm to 384mm, a massive range!
SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. The reflex bit refers to how they have to bounce the image around inside the camera to get it to show in a traditional viewfinder. This kind of camera doesn't have that kind of mechanism, so it's not an SLR. It's quite an old term now, although it lingers in the term DSLR.
Hi Steve
I'm very happy to answer your questions, because I'm sure some of these terms confuse other people, but you really don't need to keep calling me sir.
Please feel free to ask as many questions as you like.
SLR's always used to have mirrors to reflect the image into the viewfinder, so you could see what you'd be taking. That's the "reflex" part of the name SLR. It's really the same with DSLR's.
A mirrorless camera doesn't have the mirror, hence the name. It uses the information from the sensor to send to an electronic viewfinder instead of an optical viewfinder. Without the mirror the cameras can be smaller and lighter and so can the lenses for them.
thanks so much for reply!! I guess I just need a demo on how to use different features in the camera.
Shutter speed, ISO, aperture and amount of light all have to "balance" to get a good exposure. Lower ISO values will tend to give longer shutter speeds and/or wider apertures, for a given amount of light.
It's normally very expensive for camera makers to make a compact lens with a really wide aperture, but much cheaper to make the shutter open for longer time periods. That means for low light/low ISO, the shutter is more likely to be slower to compensate.
Hi Steven
I'll definitely do that, because I think it would be useful. Some of the terms used are designed to be confusing. That way, camera makers can charge more money.
It makes a camera look more exciting if you can list hundreds of things about it.
I remember seeing a salesman on the TV once (shopping channel), who made a big point about the fact the camera had an on-off switch. Yes, it's a feature, but kind of a basic one.
Give me a day or two and I'll upload a video.
You're quite right, I'm very happy to answer questions on this channel, so please feel free to ask them.
Yes, that's one of the names given to this type of camera.
Hi. I think the light system on the charger is a bit weird, too. When the light goes out, the battery is charged. When the light is on, the battery is still charging.
It's kind of opposite to what I'd expect, based on other camera, but you soon get used to it once you know what it means.
I hope we get to see some of the stuff you take with your new camera. It's a pretty capable camera and does some very nice video.
It occurs to me that these questions you and Steven have would be best answered with a video showing exactly what I mean. Let me try to make something over the next few days that answers all this.
That also means that when you've hit the widest aperture your shutter speed would have to lengthen if you're still not getting enough light. That's assuming you set a fixed ISO. Some cameras can automatically change the ISO for you, depending on the light levels.
@Zoheba The reason is because in Europe their electrical power grid runs on 50Hz and in America it runs on 60Hz. If you are filming using 60fps under a fluorescent light that's running on 50Hz you are going to encounter flickering because fluorescent lights are actually extremely fast strobe lights so some of your frames will be completely black.
When you zoom in you are changing the focal length. The 16x is your maximum zoom.
In other words if you change your focal length from 5mm to 10mm you have used 2x. But those numbers don't matter. What matters is the effect you want and you'll gauge that from the lcd screen.
Numbers are useful to compare one camera to another. For taking photos, concentrate on what you're see. Most people using this kind of camera will rarely bother checking what focal length and zoom factor they're using.
ah, ok, I understand.
The focal length or focal length range gives you information that lets you work out how wide-angle or how telephoto a lens might be.
The optical zoom of 16x is related to that, but is not identical. It just tells you that the maximum telephoto zoom is 16x more than the widest angle. You could work that out just from the focal length range.
Optical zoom range is different from Digital Zoom because it's almost always higher quality. Some cheap cameras use digital zoom.
Not all cameras have mirrors. The ones with LCD viewfinders, well, compact cameras at least, take the image from the sensor electronically and put it on the LCD. They don't use mirrors for that.
SLR's used to be special (long, long time ago), because they were virtually the only way you could see exactly what you'd get in the photo before you took it. The other types back then, rangefinder and TLR, you kind of had to guess a little bit. There was a slight difference what you saw and took.
@YouMotherIsAwsome I did have the T21 and you're right about video quality, of course. But for quick and easy shooting, the Sony is pretty good. It all depends on what you're wanting to do with the end result, I guess.
The focal length of this camera goes from 4.28 to 68.38mm. That's why the zoom range is 16x. In other words, 68.38mm is 16x 4.28mm. The optical zoom range, in this case 16x, does not tell you what the starting focal length of the lens is.
That's why you need the other numbers, so you know how wide-angle and how telephoto the lens can go.
@IceYourPimpHand Ain't that the truth. :) Thanks for stopping by.
@thekeddi Thanks for the comment and I totally agree with your previous comment on the original video - the music was really, really annoying. I don't think I'm going to add it to any more videos now.
@harasielite You're very welcome. After I've taken a look at the PMB I'll let you know if there's anything that you have to do with it to render HD out to RUclips. Some applications have RUclips settings that are just awful - I had that problem myself with a preset in Adobe Premiere. I use my own settings now and get better quality.
@harasielite I haven't used PMB (I don't like Sony software), but I'll take a look at it and see if there's something obvious that needs to be done.
The other thing you need to think about is immediately after upload, the 1080 version of a video is not available. It takes RUclips a little time to process the video before they offer all the resolution versions. That's because they're re-rendering the video, I believe.
@mygoodstuffreviewed
THANKS 4 your opinion and I'll wait till you make the comparison video .
hello again! thank you for replying to my previous message. I have just receved a USB cable for for sony HX9v , I bought it on ebay. I connected one end to the camera and another to computer, a folder NO NAME appeared on computer - I suppose it is the card. and another - with other name appeared too, I believe this was the USB cable name. I had to read and agree with policies of licensing agreement,
@tJyNchoo Hi. Yes! I'm actually shooting some test video clips at the moment to upload and show the quality.
I'll upload them as soon as I can.
You can see a quick clip from this camera, taken very quickly, at the very end of my other video about the Casio TR100.
It's the clip of me in a blue shirt talking to camera. No special settings, just all automatic and guesswork on framing.
Sure, I'll cover as much of the basics as I can, although that may be more than one video. :D
I don't spend all day logged into RUclips so sometimes it might take me a little while to respond, but I'll always respond as quickly as I can. :)
@Zoheba It's to do with the scanning rate of the tv systems used in those countries, I think. That in turn is to do with the frequency electricity cycles at in the electric supply of those countries. It's very much an historical thing, I believe and doesn't really make much difference in real terms.
Ah well originally the optical viewfinders were there to help save battery life for cameras with LCD screens, but some of the early digital cameras didn't even have LCD screens so all they had was optical!
thanks 4 sony hx9v unboxing and review , i am gonna get hx5v or hx9v soon which one do you you think better taking money wise factor in consideration .
THANKS .
@mygoodstuffreviewed Thats Very true about the end result because with the point and shot camera yes it is very easy but the end resault is not as good as the end result of the t3i Very true!
Awesome unboxing! Loads better without the music :-)
Hi again. I got my 600d a few weeks back. I actually got the Kiss X5 version, but it's the same. It's a really superb camera, lots of manual control.
However, in terms of just straight video quality, I'm not sure that it's hugely better than the Sony. Depends on what you're doing. For simple, quick videos the Sony is brilliant.
If you're doing something that requires a little more care and control, the Canon definitely wins. Horses for courses, as they say.
If you tell me the top 2 or 3 features you're interested in, I'll see if I can make a video explaining them for you.
Hi Steve
I'm from the UK, which I see you have listed on your profile too.
I'll definitely upload a video about focal length and optical zoom in the next few days. It's useful to know how the manufacturers define things, so you can compare one camera with another more easily.
What camera do you use at the moment?
@EgyptianCitizen2011 The HX5V and the HX9V are very similar. If you can wait a couple of days I'll do some comparison video of both models (I have them both).
The price in the UK of the HX5V is now very good, just over half the cost of the HX9V.
Honestly, I don't think that the HX9V is twice the quality of the HX5V, but it is a superb camera and the video is just great. The extra long zoom lens is incredible too, but if you don't need that kind of telephoto setting it's a waste.
@Liebecks hey dude I got this camera a montha ago I used it to film 4 short films I like the video qualiaty its not bad for a small camera it comes NO WERE neer the t3i witch I'm getting in a few days trust me you will be much more pleased if you get the 600d!
hi, is it possible to set custom white balance in the video mode? thanks
For the same lighting, the shutter will slow down when ISO is lower.
@6b5Tube Hi, I used the Canon 550D with the standard kit lens, 18-55mm.
I'm not sure if the charger supplied with the camera has an automatic trickle charge, or auto off function. I think it's safe to leave it overnight like that, but I don't really like to do that myself - just in case :)
However, I have forgotten to take the battery out of the charger a few times and it still seems to be ok. It doesn't seem to have lost any capacity, but I can't guarantee it's a safe thing to do.
An optical viewfinder is a lens system (usually, can be just a hole!) that you look through to see directly onto the subject without using mirrors or LCD's. Really cheap compact cameras sometimes have them, because they're cheaper to make.
To be honest, you won't see them all that often these days unless you buy something really, really cheap, or something really, really expensive. I know, weird, isn't it?
Can you show some sample video clips from this camera? Just wonder if it's so "HD" as mentioned =)
The packaging is cool to look at, that's for sure. I'm not sure it's the "best" though.
thanks so much for reply!
,,,,,I continue m previous message/ But then I could not connect USB anymore. I apologise I cannot properly explain, but I read a message on my computer that the device was not properly ejected. The camera was switched on though, Do you have any idea what this could be? great thanks for reply. I heard some people had a hard time connecting USB to PC too
How long does the battery last for?
hi there! I got this camera based on your reviews. I am looking for videos explaining all the feautures and modes this camera has , sort of a step by step manual. I am afraid if I start pushing different buttons I can just destroy it. COuld you help?
Hello there!! I was wondering if it posiible to charge sony DSC-HX9V battery for the whole night? I left mine to charge for about 12 hours because the light on the charger was orange after 3 hours of charge and I thought it would turn green, so left it to charge for the whole night, Is is safe to do this, will it do something to the battery? thank you for reply!
I've never liked them myself. In most cameras, they're a little bit small to be comfortable using them. Also, because they're not normally showing you exactly the same view as the lens, when you take a photo it won't look quite the same as you expect.
With modern cameras and batteries, there's less need than there was for optical viewfinders. However, in very bright sunlight they can still be useful, because LCDs can be very hard to see in really bright sunlight.
What camera do you use?
Hello sir, what camera did you use to shot this video?
please answer
No, some of the "mirrorless" cameras have interchangeable lenses and they're not "SLR" or "DSLR" in the strictest sense.
@OKBAOK costco was selling is for 259.99 in stores.
Hey! I'm thinking of buying a camera. Either this Sony or a Canon EOS 600d/Rebel T3i. I like photography and taking pictures, but I also want a good video feature. I know these are two entirely different cameras, and the DSLR is, of course, better. But what is the better buy? A DLSR is large and heavy, and it's much more expensive. Can the Sonys picture and video quality come near that of the Canon's`? Thx
@8minutestorm I couldn't find a way to do it.
@spike378 I guess different costco stores sell different price. I went last Tuesday i checked the price still $289 in my area. Very good price for $259. :)
hello again)) i tried to switch on the feature where you an make 10 photos at once. I some how managed to do it - i do not remember which button i pushed though, and then I could see that the camera made 10 images in 2 seconds or so, nut I could not display them. Also how to make photos in black and white and also how to make good quality images while not using the flash - I manage to make awful quality pictures)))) thanks !!!)))
@Liebecks Sorry for not replying sooner. No ,the Sony can't really compete head to head with a Canon T3i or even a T2i, but I know I'd carry the Sony in my pocket far more often than I would carry a big DSLR.
They're not really exactly the same thing. The optical zoom ratio is just a number that tells you how much difference there is between the widest focal length (smallest number) and the maximum focal length (largest number).
The figure that counts is the optical focal length range. If you know that, you can always work out the optical zoom factor. If you only had the optical zoom factor, you wouldn't be able to work out the focal lengths just from that. Focal length range is the important one.
anyone have recommended replacement for the charger
Does that last answer make a bit more sense?
It's like saying that your TV is 3x bigger than your neighbour's. It doesn't really tell you what size the TV is.
@YouMotherIsAwsome I'm hoping that at some point I'll save enough money to get the Nikon D800. The video on that looks superb. Of course, I may have to stop eating and paying rent for a while to get it!
funny how i cant find anywhere to buy this camera...only on sony website..
@harasielite Hey, that's cool! I'm going to go check them out.
Why do Middle eastern and European Models of DSC Tx100v and DSC-Hx9V have 50fps at 1080 and not 60 fps at 1080 like American models? Why there is less 10 fps less in these models? That means there is a little compromise in video quality(less Frames per sec)?
Not totally sure what you mean, but my previous answer hopefully will clarify things for you.
I just bought my Hx9v yesterday at Costco store for $289 + 9% tax with 4gig SD card and Case Amazon sell them for $328. Got a good deal with 90days return policy :) go and check this one now. Enjoy :)
@vn01208503 It's on Amazon and Jessops have it on sale at the moment.
I'm so jealous
I like the 650 better, more compact
@IceYourPimpHand hahahah - none taken. As I say in another of my videos, one day I'll learn how to open boxes. That or get a 5 year old kid to do it for me! lol
took you 2 minutes to open the box.. just putting it out there.
@mismis888 this made me lol :)
@harasielite I just made a very short response video, at /6ihzWq0xcRE
