    Love Mount Mitchell. Went there a few years back. It was closed the last time we went. Next time I’ll have to hike instead of driving ha I have young kids so we drove. I’d like to hit all the mountains in NC.

    Loved watching your hike up to the summit and congradulations it really is an accomplishment. I did this hike in June 2023 and at 65 years I needed to get this off my bucket list before I was too old. Keep hiking.

    I think colors stand out more easily in those conditions. Some of my favorite photos of fall colors came from a hike in the Cohutta Wilderness on a foggy rainy day. The colors just pop in those conditions.
    We haven’t done this one so it’s another added to our list. Thanks for posting! And I’d much rather be going up using a headlamp than descending. ESPECIALLY w/o my hiking stick! Glad y’all arrived safe and didn’t take any spills along the way.

    I hiked Mt. Mitchell years ago, before the summit tower was replaced. I did it one August day and the only other hikers on the trail were not going campground to summit and back. At the summit were many visitors who had driven up, and they looked at me with confusion when I told them I hiked up. They seemed to think, why hike when there's a perfectly good road? I like your goal of covering the whole GSMNP trail system. I did that with Shenandoah NP not long ago.

    • @NickandRachel
      @NickandRachel  6 дней назад +1

      Exact thing happened to us everybody at the top thought we were crazy for hiking up 🤣
      I guess they'll never understand lol
      That's awesome how many miles of trails are in Shenandoah National Park? We've done some hiking there but I don't remember off the top of my head.
      We live so far away from the smokies it'll probably take us a long time but we've been scratching off trails for a couple of years now

      @@NickandRachel Shenandoah NP has 500+ miles of trail, and lots of bears! But my favorite wildlife sighting there was a close encounter with a Bobcat! To most people, Shenandoah is just the Skyline Drive, but, hike away from the Drive, and the wildlife is outstanding.

    • @NickandRachel
      @NickandRachel  6 дней назад +1

      My favorite wildlife encounter in Shenandoah National Park was with a barred owl! It was beautiful. We have those videos in our Shenandoah National Park playlist.
      It's been a couple years since we've been about time we made our way back! I would love to see a bobcat on trail I haven't seen one yet!

    • @kevinlewallen4778
      @kevinlewallen4778 6 дней назад

      @@NickandRachel I'll look for the owl video. That species is quite abundant in the park. Have you ever spotted their young ones? They're like clumps of feathers making a horrible hissing screech.
      Now you've done it, I have to share my frisky bears story. I was hiking a remote stretch of trail in the Park's south district and looking for birds one late May day. I heard one in a thicket and stood silently until he popped out. All of a sudden I hear a racket of scattering rocks and see two bears running right at me along the trail! I said, "Hey bears, whatya doing?" They immediately hit the brakes. They had no idea I was there because they were chasing each other and I was so quiet. The female (in the lead), scampered down the side of the ridge, and the male reversed his course back along the trail. But before leaving, he turned his head and looked at me, as if to say, "Thanks a lot, pal!" I'm pretty sure they resumed their date before long. It was scary, but once I realized they had no bad intent, the event became one of my all-time favorite wildlife anecdotes.

    • @NickandRachel
      @NickandRachel  6 дней назад +1

      @@kevinlewallen4778 I've never seen any baby owls.
      That's crazy! I bet you he was mad lol we've had some funny bear stories as well hiking in the smokies a lot. Thank God Black Bear aren't that aggressive and they're more scared of us. If that were a grizzly it would have been a different story.

    "Alltrails is a liar"... Indeed it is! It really messed with Mister and I on our Palmetto Trail Hike. We thought we should be done at 14.9 and it ended up at 16.7... That extra 1.8 miles is the longest ever cause you think you should be DONE! Well done guys! Especially with the injuries! Thats rough! Haha we noticed when you guys were taking your lunch break Rachel made a face trying to open her drink cap! 😬You pull off the Lumberjack look pretty well! When we came down and did the PMT we hiked through that same Lord of The Rings type atmosphere... it was awesome! Good job, on to the next bucket!
