The heat index in Nashville hit triple digits in early Friday afternoon traffic. I was in my van and I said, “Siri, I want directions to nearest, highest elevation near me.” Four hours later I was stretched out watching the Sunset from Mt. Mitchell at 67 degrees. Probably the smartest, most therapeutic trip ever. Thanks for your work
Thanks for sharing. Great story...always wondered about the background behind Mt. Mitchell and Clingmans Dome. This answered a lot of my questions! Randy/GA
Wow if Morganton was his last stop before he started walking, that's 30 miles away from that mountain peak! in straight line! what a journey, I got lost for a few hours hiking from a few miles away from the peak, found a beautiful unmarked waterfall, still unmarked. I envy the ability to navigate lands like these people.
For over 20 years I have Known Attacoa as Tablerock the Cherokees Holy Mountain--THis according to The US Government with their Brochure on Linville Gorge--It does have a Holy Altar on It that was desecrated 6/6/99
@@GEEKORMAN No, thank you for saying--I am only seeking truth like most and maybe you had a better source of what is to be called what--that's why i quoted my source. Thanks for vid and info
Kinda related. There’s been a movement afoot with hikers going up Mt LeConte just out of Gatlinburg stacking rocks at High Point trying to get Mt LeConte higher than Clingmans Dome. In the many years this has gone on, Clingmans is still taller. This I think is still going on even with the rock huggers poo pooing it!
Whoa, that is crazy! I think maybe whatever man-made structures or rock-stacks get put up, we have to give these mountains credit for whatever height they are. All of those areas are amazing.
I worked on a crew back in the 80s that was doing structural repairs and maintenance on the tower. We spent over 4 months repairing the stonework on the tower and replacing the steps on the trail. We used 5' scaffolding around the tower and it took 11 sections to get up above the top. There were also 5 flights of stairs inside the tower and each flight was 10' high and the retaining wall at the top was 4' high, making the tower around 55'. On a clear day you could see the skyscrapers in Charlotte!
Clingman's last laugh bit doesn't tell the actual story. There was a tower on Mitchell that was torn down around 2010ish, and it was easily 3 to 4 times the height of the one rebuilt in its place. So when Clingmans tower was constructed, the old tower on Mitchell was still standing! So it wasn't anyone with the department of the interior saying, let's win one for Clingmans. Nice "tall tell", I guess this is how they start. Facts are facts though.
Fair enough! That's a good point about the old tower. So, yes, probably not intentional on anyone's part, however Clingman's tower does stand taller as of today.

Sounds perfect. Glad you made it up there!
lol I was traveling back to SC the same way at the same time fellow traveler.
There's no way you made it from Nashville to Mt Mitchell in that short of time unless you flew!😂

It must have been some serious hiking, for sure! Pretty amazing.
My first trip putop Mt Mitchell was with my father in1956. I was born in1950. Charleston, S.C. is my home.
I guess you saw the old tower on the top? Thanks for watching!
@@GEEKORMAN Yes, I did. I have been several times since then.. Always a joy !
Interesting history, that I wasn't fully aware of. I currently live in Morganton NC and have spent a lot of time in the mountains.
Thanks for watching! That is a beautiful area up there.
Visited both places back in the early 80's with my family on Vaca, beautiful place.
I'm looking forward to doing a follow-up on Clingman's. Thanks for leaving a comment!

I bet that's amazing. And something I will never try!
Mine is bigger.

Everyone is indigenous to somewhere.
Black Dome Mountain Sports in Asheville takes its name from this mountain.

the old tower on mt mitchell was much higher than the current observation deck, though i dont know what its height was.
Someone else commented on that, too. Good point!

The old tower was around 55' tall. Read my reply to Thejoeg2005 a couple threads up.
You lost me at 13,000 years…
Hearing that indigenous people lived there for 13,000 years “lost you?”
