Way, way back in 1972, I was 5, we lived for a couple of months in Germany, my mother had rented rooms at a farm, we stayed with that family. I remember it very well, especially their daughter. The owner of the farm was in his 50s, and was very proud of his military exploits during the war, showing off his uniforms and stuff one day, to the dismay of his son. However, one day he took us all on a trip to see the Bodensee, from where we were we could see the Alps. We visited a romantic 19th Century castle known as Neuschwanstein (try saying that a couple of times) and I remember the trip back in his Royal Blue VW 1500, which you guys call a squareback. I was in the back with the other kids, plenty of room, and I remember the road being lit up by the high beams, peering from the back between the seats you could see the massive front of the car. So, yeah, I like the squareback, it holds special memories for me and it just looks great. Hope all goes well and you manage to find a new steering wheel or at least the chrome ring.
That trailer loading was pro level! I know everyone drools over notches but I'd grab a square. Especially one as nice and original as this one! Can't wait to see it come together!
Wish my Beetle project was an oval. My 70s beetle is at the point of a rolling pan and started rust repair. Got some heater channels to replace. Don't give up and you'll get there eventually! I just hope the autostick in mine actually works.
Massively entertaining. I loved the children's ash tray 😀. Squarebacks are great cars. I learned to drive stick on a 68 square. Good luck. I'll be following. The gas burners are choice. I may have gone with turtle backs but the price on the gas burners was an undeniably good deal with no shipping price to pay as well!
Awesome car. I remember when Jason picked it up. Great buy. Cant wait to see you do more on it.I had a 71 back in high school. God Bless guys. Love your videos
Wish I still had my 71, had Bosch fuel injection, Was Awesome in the mountain altitude - made no difference. Dude rear ended me with a truck and screwed it up beyond repair🤣
I found this chanel when you posted "lemon rally" day one.. Been hooked since then, your chanel is one of the best "old VW" channels to watch.. Its not just the cars it's the rabble you have round you in the garage.. 😂.. As for Ben, great English man to have on board, I like his subtle sarcasm and dry humour. 😂.. Bet he misses Fish and chips and watching a 0-0 draw at the football on a freezing cold, wet Wednesday night... Or not.. 😂.. Keep it up..
Thanks for the kind comments! I was a Luton Town supporter during the 90’s so I’m well familiar with the concept of competitive underachievement 😂 - Ben
My father had a 1971 VW squareback, this color. But the Brazilian version, called Variant. I used to live in Ohio, now in basically rust free Oregon. I remember rust in my cars from those Ohio years. This car of yours is not so bad, though. Looks great actually.
I have 2 good used front rotors, new weber 34ICT dual carb linkage kit for the type 3 available. Those gas burner wheels would look awesome on the squareback. I have a set on my 76 bug. You can see it on my channel.
My mother bought a 1970 Squareback automatic when they were new. It didn't really run very well even then. That early fuel injection system was a friggin disaster.
It’s a trade off, you get the added performance but they seem to be a pain in the ass to keep in sync and it seems to be because of the poor quality of the linkages and the throttle shafts. The 1776 I just put in my Bus has an old set of Weber ICTs and the shafts are super sloppy. Runs great for a few miles and then gets a little funky. Appears to be an issue with new sets as well. If you can find a specialist to straighten them out then it’s worth it, I think. I really like the pull down linkage over most twist style linkages, thought Vintage Speeds twist style linkage is very nice.
@wickedwerks845 Good to know!! My wife's 78 bus has dual Weber 44s and I HATE them!!!! It's a 2000cc type IV. Trying to decide what to replace them with. I've even thought about doing a single progressive Weber. 🤷🏻♂️
@@UncsPlacePerformance might need to be re-jetted. They are not, and this includes the single progressives, set up ready to run out of the box. I’ve got a customer with a ‘72 Westy with a 1700 and single progressive weber, I really like it.
never understood why type 3 cars ran hotter or at least Ive heard they run hotter, but if they run hotter then why???? did they bother making them run hotter
As far as I know, the design of the cooling system is actually more efficient but, in my experience, it’s much easier to make them run hot if something is missing; tins or tubes and such.
The “emissions crap” you criticize has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands or even millions of Americans over the decades. Show some respect. It might also be illegal to remove it.
I looked for 3 years for a decent squareback and think I found one. The guy wanted something with a.c And likes my diesel mercedes. Waiting for him to get a new title. Probably put a Mazda rotary in it. They really move with a rotary.
My first car! My parent's 1971 light blue Squareback!

Nice edit ! Good stuff Guys 👍👍
Naturally, Ben did this one so it’s doing better 😂 thanks for watching!
Thanks Jason! - Ben
Whoa!! A Connecticut 5150/Wicked Werks crossover episode?? Thats nut-tastic.
Nice looking project! Didn’t expect to see a @5150mxVW crossover. I thought he only bought cars.

Well you bought it from a knowledgeable owner for sure...I watch all his videos
I like the chrome tyres. Makes the car look awesome.
We say in Germany VW Variant Type 3. btw. it is a very lovely looking car. You have flavour.
Rock on Fellas !

Helluva score on the square.. That's killer! Loving it, fellas!✌️
Damn! I'm so jealous. It's REALLY good I don't have any money or I would have so much. I have dreamed of getting a squareback.
Squareback awesome ,nice getting it to run ,a few tweaks and no doubt a great Dailey nice work guys

Loved the video!!! Great content! And loved the background music and overall upgrade in quality of video!
Love your work on these classic cars!

I love the squereback😊
Omg. 2200 😍 😍 😍
15:55 Taylor said those exact same words the moment he lost his virginity.
Congrats on the purchase, that's a great car

This is what I’m saying 😂 I’m still getting burned at the stake a year later by all these fuel injections guys like I told them Santa isn’t real
That's actually in pretty good shape
Love it!
I'm very jealous of the condition of that thing! My 72 is nowhere near that clean 😕
We cut our teeth on a ‘71 that was more rust than metal so I definitely feel your pain! - Ben
Oh good, another project 💩 box 😂
Seriously, it’s in pretty good shape!!
And of course it isn’t mine! I get the really crappy ones, he gets the easy my-first-project-car kits 😂
@@wickedwerks I love how Jason talked him into the rims 😂
Love the content, will there be any more on this Squareback in the future?
Yes! Ben is working on it now.
The standards that east coast people have for a “solid car” always makes me laugh. From Texas btw
square backs are nice.
Don't take me wrong but Volkswagen and Fords are a lot alike in their both over engender. Touff .
Another great video!!!! What are your thoughts on the dual Weber 34s? Are they worth having?

@@wickedwerks Oh, and finding a VW specialist in Mississippi is a joke. We're a VW couple in the middle of a sea of squatted 4wd trucks.

@wickedwerks845 Tanks for the info!! Between you, 5150MXVW, Mustie1, and Slade, I've learned a lot!! Keep the awesome videos coming!!
Last seen being driven by Harrison Ford in the movie Witness?
Some quick research tells me that our square is only a few thousand units newer than the car used in that film.
I want to put Empi 8 spoke wheels on my ‘67.
Despite Ben’s best efforts he has become a VW guy… Welcome Ben. Just accept it… Its easier…
Only taken a decade 😂
Was this filmed before Taylor hurt his left hand middle finger?
This was filmed before I hurt either of my hands 😂
horns are overrated!! cool episode team
Buenas las medidas de las llantas y número del aro

…I’m joking.
Longer than Ben would like to admit 😂
