- Sansha-mairi is a custom that is rooted in parts of the Kyushu region, centered on Fukuoka Prefecture, and the Chugoku region.
There are various theories about the origin of the three shrine visits, but Minamoto no Yoritomo visited Hakone Shrine (Kanagawa), Izuyama Shrine (Shizuoka), and Mishima Taisha (Shizuoka).
It is said that it may have started as a visit to the shrine.
It seems that Sansha Mairi became popular in Fukuoka during the Edo period.
Samurai from Fukuoka's Kuroda domain learned that Minamoto no Yoritomo was visiting three shrines.
People began to visit Sumiyoshi Shrine, Hiyoshi Shrine, and Hakozaki Shrine, and it spread among the common people. (There are various theories)
Basically, you can visit any shrine as part of your Sansha Mairi.
