  • Alison Madueke, a former chief of naval staff, has petitioned the Lagos State High Court to officially end his marriage to Diezani Madueke and compel her to stop using his last name.
He has asked the court to order the former Minister of Petroleum Resources to revert to her maiden name, Agama.
Madueke’s petition for jactitation of marriage argued that Diezani’s continued use of his name, despite their marriage being legally dissolved, damages his reputation and could lead to unintended consequences, including mistaken liability due to the corruption allegations against her.
Madueke, who has also served as the military governor of Anambra and Imo states, married Diezani on June 30, 1999, under the Marriage Act.
Diezani previously filed for divorce in the Nassarawa State High Court in November 2021, citing an irreconcilable breakdown of their marriage.

It's only logical that if a lady is no longer married to a man, she shd gladly drop his name. No contest

So what does the court say to the use of a name after divorce ? That should be the focus in order to educate the audience who do not understand the fact that a name once taken could last forever except the individual decides otherwise.

The case should be thrown out of court. I understand why he wants her to stop using it but the hassle surrounding changing of names can be too much. I’m not sure why women still legally change their names anymore. Keep your family name and go by his name at social functions or to publicly introduce yourself. On the legal documents though, keep your original name.

The agitation of Mr Alison Madueke is crystal clear. No one wants someone who's no longer associated with him/her to continue to do damage to his/her name and the children's legacy. I think MAB and TMO understands his point better here.

Tope got it wrong at the start of her analysis. Alison Madueke was prominent. Up till date when i see someone with the last name Madueke, Admiral's image and legacies still flash back. He was a very influential figure in the early 2000s. And the name was a brand in the early 90s. But she concluded correctly.

What are these ladies talking self? If they are now divorced, it's only common sense for her to drop the man's name. Who doesn't know the baggage associated with this woman, with all the public fund stealing and frauds associated with her? Meanwhile, for these ones saying they don't know Rear Admiral Alisson Madueke, are you kidding me? This man was the former governor of the old Imo state during the military era of Ibrahim Babangida. He is a household name and deserves to protect his legacy.

For obvious reasons, the name maybe retained. A woman travelling with her children who answer a different surname may face difficulties travelling with them abroad.
Whatever reason you have may not be as obvious as you think. It’ll be helpful if you can share the reasons that are obvious to you.
May I also submit that more often than not, the women change to Ms and not Mrs so you need to pay attention to the title that used

A woman is entitled to keep her husband last name after divorce. Is the women's choice either to keep or change the last name. Allison Mmadueke should know better because Mmadueke is a legal name to Deizani too, when both of them got married.

If she shows up as Agama, her biometrics will identify her and whatever she is needed for. If he and his family show up with his name- they first be interrogated , before they are left to proceed with whatever was stalled. It is less stressful for more people associated with the name , if she uses her maiden name. We are not sure of the reasons for divorce. Assuming she chose to leave the marriage- why would he and the rest of the family need to go through interrogations when legally they are not bound to loyalty to her. His name was part of why she ascended in the first instance.

Mr. Madueke has no valid reason to making such a petty demand. What did he understand "for better and for worse" to mean? When she was Minister of Petroleum in Nigeria and was known all around the world, did it not enhance his personality/credibility? After 24 years, Diezani's stake in the marriage (she has children from it) is high enough to entitle her to keeping the name if she prefers to keep it. The end of a marriage does not erase everything about the marriage -- he is no more an owner of the name than she is its owner. I doubt that any court can force her to cease bearing the name, Mr. Madueke appears petty and sulking here. "For better and for worse" means she gets to keep the name now that she is down in the same way she had kept it when she was atop of the world as Petroleum Minister.

The only people that might have known who Alison Madueke was are the people in the navy, diezani made that name global, imprinted the name in the history of Nigeria.
As for his children Ugonna and Chima, nobody enjoyed that name and the privileges Diezano brought to it more than those 2 boys when the name was hot. The daughters will eventually drop the name when they marry. The man should please rest, Nigerian men hardly know anything about the woman they are married to because they have the financial power in the relationship, create a culture werte women can be free to express themselves, you won’t but when the woman tastes any slight form of freedom her true colors would come out
