I would argue that the Stones were the most influential band in defining the classic country rock sound, along with Gram Parsons. So, they have a fair amount of country songs. This one is more tongue-in-cheek, though. “Wild Horses” is a more serious song.
I take the phrase far away eyes to mean that a person is not fully present. Like, the body might be there, but the person’s thoughts are in another place.

    "Far Away Eyes"
I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
Well, the preacher said, you know you always have the Lord by your side
And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord
I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there she'd be off
She'd be off with the nearest truck driver she could find
Much to my surprise, there she was sittin' in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
Was a girl with far away eyes, so I tell ya
So if you're down on your luck
    And you can't harmonize
Find a girl with far away eyes
    And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes, Yep
Well the preacher kept right on saying that all I had to do was send
Ten dollars to the church of the Sacred Bleeding Heart Of Jesus
Located somewhere in Los Angeles, California
And next week they'd say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true
So I did, the next week, I got a prayer with a girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got, well I'll tell ya
So if you're down on your luck
    I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
    And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes, one more time
So if you're down on your luck
    I know you all sympathize
Get a girl with far away eyes

Ron Wood was playing a Pedal Steel Guitar, an instrument that is synon, synon, closely associated with Country and Western Music. The Rolling Stones have gone there before, "Honkey Tonk Women" is an example. "The Girl With The Far away Eyes" is a personal favorite, especially the line "I was so pleased to be informed of this, that I ran 20 redlights in his honor", just a great image. This version is a little different than the album version, but just as good.

The Rolling Stones did a whole album of country songs, called "Country Honk." It included a country version of their hit song "Honkey- Tonk Woman," recorded in a country western style. It was a really good album. Funny, listening to a bunch of "Brits" sing with southern accents.

Mick does this song in the show where President Clinton is at the show and when he ends the song Mick says That Was For You Cracker Heads. He brings out Butty Guy and they do a song called Reefer and Champagne. At one point Buddy turns and looks at Mick and says hey Mick there shouldn’t be a law against a man for smoking a little dope,
then Keith gets up in Betty’s face as he’s playing and Butty doesn’t react to it and just keeps playing. At the end of the song Keith gives him the guitar he was playing as a sign of respect. I think it’s called Shine a Light. ⚡️🎸⚡️

The Stones have other country sounding songs including "The Last Time" and "Dead Flowers", which one of my old bands used to cover. "Last Time" is more upbeat and makes a great dance song but both were fun to play.

Love this song . Jagger could be an actor . You would swear they’re Americans not British. They make fabulous country music . Listen to dead flowers ,another and my favorite country tune by the Stones .
The following is from song facts:
In "Far Away Eyes," Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger tells a story about driving through Bakersfield, California, on a Sunday morning, listening to gospel music on the radio as he's headed to see a girl. He said this really happened, and all he did to write the song was recall his experience.
Bakersfield's country and western scene (led by Buck Owens) was a big influence on this song, as well as the gospel programs on Los Angeles radio stations. In a 1978 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jagger said, "You know, when you drive through Bakersfield on a Sunday morning or Sunday evening, all the country music radio stations start broadcasting black gospel services live from LA. And that's what the song refers to. But the song's really about driving alone, listening to the radio." Asked if the girl in the song was a real one, Jagger replied, "Yeah, she's real, she's a real girl." >>

Pedal Steel Lap Guitar played with a "Slide"

    • @mikemiller3069
      @mikemiller3069 Месяц назад

That is actually a contradiction within your statement. There are two instruments, "lap steel" and "pedal steel" guitars. A lap steel is similar to a regular guitar but is tuned with open tuning so that it plays a chord as you strum across it. It actually lays in your lap and is played with a slide. The downside is that it can only play the type of chord that it is tuned to. A pedal steel guitar on the other hand, does not lay in your lap; it has a stand that it sits on. The advantage is that it has both foot and knee levers which change the type of chord (major, minor, 7th, etc.) so that you're not limited to a single chord type, making it a much more versatile instrument.

This is a parody of a certain type of 60s-70s era country music. They're making fun of the genre. This was part of the Some Girls album, released in '78. "Far away eyes" in my opinion likely refers to the blissed-out look of the devout "high on Jesus" type of people that were common in those times, as they always seemed to be looking off into some distant vision of heaven rather than making eye contact.

Always loved this song, which is on a great album called Some Girls. The country thing seems a bit strange to see now, but back in the day country-rock by Brits was not uncommon at all. I always figured it was just another way that the Stones honor their heros, the Black blues giants from the US. Give Some Girls a full listen. The rest of it is great rock, with songs like Shattered and Beast of Burden.

That laying down guitar thing is a Steel Guitar. I thought Faraway Eyes was someone either drunk or drugged out, making their eyes look faraway. That’s why she looks a little worse for wear to him. We’ve all probably seen people with eyes like that.
