This was the Stones at their creative peak. The entire 'Exile on Main St' album is amazing.
I have to agree .. from Beggars Banquet in 1968 they put out four incredible albums, Let It Bleed, Exile On MainStreet and of course Sticky Fingers…
For sure an "all killer, no filler" album! This and Sticky Fingers are my favorite Stones.
It's funny he mentioned the vocal mix. Fans love this album partially for the grimy, messy mix, suits the Stones. But Mick isn't onboard with that, saying at one point the mix was embarrassing. I like it myself.
Agreed most excellent!!!
The old Black bluesman who taught The Stones about recording taught them to "bury" the lyric.
If you like this song, please check out Linda Ronstadt's cover of the song. Jagger actually changed the lyrics for her to sing it. It's spectacular as well! Perfect Female Friday song.
I enthusiastically second that!!💙💫
Live version, please
@@TANTRUMGASM You keep posting the same exact quote on any mention of Linda. Lemme guess, you're a Trumper?
@@TANTRUMGASM Every songwriter WISHES she would cover one of their songs… go get your shinebox
@@emdennis10 Knowledge is chasing you… stop running so fast
The Exile on Main Street album backstory is legendary. Tumbling Dice was a huge hit. The album is probably the grittiest of the Stones work, and peak Mick Taylor era Stones. Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Shine aLight, Let It Loose -just great songs on both discs.
and "Happy"
All Down the Line too
@John Bumol All facts. And especially that this is “peak Mick Taylor era-Stones”. And for me, That’s peak Rolling Stones, period.
@@RabbiSteve Last sentence is absolutely true. Personally, I prefer Sticky Fingers as peak MT.
These guys would love Rip this Joint as a pure rock and roll song.
"Exile on Main Street" is the Rolling Stones at their very best.
This song👍. Many years ago now my youngest daughter would sing along when she was about 3 yrs old, singing “macaroni” instead of “got to roll me”😂
That's adorable.💙🥰
😎👍 Perfect!
I will never not be able to think of this now. Dangit. 😄
Love it!
This song really shows how intricate Charlie Watts was to the Stones' sound. His drumming was such an important part of so many of the band's classic songs.
I agree! Charlie was every bit as important to the band as Mick and Keith. Steady as a rock, he was keeping the ship straight during the storm of awesome guitar and vocals.
Jimmy Miller played the coda at the end,Charlie had a tough time getting it down.
@@billalbritton4972 you are correct. You can't always get what you want Jimmy miller
Absolutely. This upbeat rock ditty always puts me in a good mood.
A great choice love it and also Linda Ronstadt’s cover of it which got high praise from Keith Richards.
Oooooh, yes! They need to do that too!💙💫
Yes please, the FM version with Waddy
The Linda Ronstadt live version is on RUclips, but it has excellent sound and Ronstadt's performance is indeed spectacular
ol nah.. big girl should write her own music for once..lol instead of stealing every song
@@TANTRUMGASM so she's not a singer/songwriter, just an amazing singer
The Rolling Stones "Fool To Cry"...Nuff Said.
One of the best Stones songs ever.
I suddenly felt grown up after hearing this back in 72.
I had this as a mono single and Mick's vocals were more up front. The whole album Exile on Main Street is one of those albums that needs to be played from start to finish. It's something how five British guys went to the South of France as tax exiles recorded mostly the instrumental tracks and were later kicked out so they finished up in Los Angeles. When the Album was released Rolling Stone Magazine Trashed it but it soon became one of the must have albums up there with Abbey Road
Most '60s tunes and many early '70s tunes sound better in mono. More energy and audio punch in that single channel.
@@jdw5678 The US & UK versions of albums from Aftermath through Sticky fingers are worth owning in both Stereo and Mono formats some for that reason others completely different mixes altogether
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Yep. Just about all pop/rock 45 rpm singles back then were pressed in mono for (1) the AM radio broadcasts you mentioned; (2) jukeboxes, which were usually located in loud places (bars, burger joints, bowling alleys, etc.) and needed to play at high volume; and (3) dinky record players popular at that time.
John was right: Abby Road was the first Wings album.
Gotta check out 'Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)' by The Rolling Stones. I would recommend the official lyric video for that one. Classic deep cut from this amazing band!
Check out from their early career, "Mother's Little Helper".
Great song!
I think Charlie is the star of this song.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)" and "She's So Cold" !!! Good choice on this one. Saw them in concert, 1997
The Mick Taylor years, when they truly were the greatest rock and roll group on the planet !!
My all time FAVORITE group, they have so many great hits. Song suggestions: Can't you hear me knocking, Monkey Man, Street fighting man, Doo Doo Doo Doo Heartbreaker, Emotional rescue. Ah man, we can go on for days 😂😂😂😂 Love you guys, wishing you love & happiness ❤
I'm a Monkkeee !!🙈🙉🙊
The Hand of Fate!
Definitely, Monkey Man and I would add Sway to this.
Linda’s cover is *definitely* worth a listen. The live performance - she OWNS the stage
The key to the song is the line: "'Cause all you women is low down gamblers." It is about relationships as gambles.
Have heard hundreds of Stones songs, but this is my fave. Something extraordinary about this.
Love from England.
It's the Stones' Strangers in the Night. It hits that ineffable psychic note in our souls. Dittos for Rambling Man. All BTW the work of Sagittarians: Keith, Frank and Dicky!
Shattered is my favorite Stones song. It is weird, but very cool.
Sho-do-be.
♥
Edit: Tip-o-the-hat to Vanetta Fields and Clydie King's vocals on this soundtrack. They carried a lot-o-weight in this song. ♥
Rocks Off, Happy, Undercover of the Night, She's a Rainbow, etc
Those background singers TEAR IT UP
Now you need to do Linda Ronstadt's cover version.
Her cover is 🔥
Exile on Main Street might just be the best Rolling Stone album. A 2-disc assortment of rock, blues, country, and even gospel. I was fortunate to score a seat at the L.A. Forum (Completely sold-out in minutes for a two concert day, one in the afternoon and another in the evening) for their tour of this album. Simply great. Opening act, Stevie Wonder. This was back in 1972 when they were still on top of their game. I remember the entire audience (and me) singing with them to "Sweet Virginia". So many great tracks, but those I strongly recommend would be Soul Survivor, Ventilator Blues, Shine a Light, Let it Loose. Geez. So many great tracks on this album. Another track I recommend for you react to would be "Time Waits for No One" from the album, "It's Only Rock 'n Roll". Great guitar solo work by Mick Taylor.
I was at the show in Toronto, one of the best I have ever been to.
One of the loveliest fade- outs of any song
Mick Jagger's vocals and the groove of the music is meshing together beautifully like a ride, that's what makes the song great ❤️💪
Charlie Watts’ fills are amazing on this tune.
There you go guys. Glad you finally got here. Now, do yourselves a big favor find the lyrics (they’re some of Mick’s best) and pull up any one of three live performances by Linda Ronstadt killing this back in the day. Her vocal strength gave her no trouble throwing her voice to the back of a concert hall, along with all instruments on stage. It was a thing of beauty. Also, Vince Gill, Keith Urban and Albert Lee do a really nice live version at Clapton’s Crossroads Festival. All great stuff to rock out too. 🤘😎
I agree this was one of Linda's best covers.
Now that's PURE Stones...!
No end in sight. The Stones are still rolling. ,And smoking what they roll.
This track is another classic from Exile. Hearing it on Vinyl is unreal
This song and it's only rock and roll made me fall madly in love with the Stones music.
Seen them countless times. Every show beyond great. Not just them,...but the energy of the crowd. And seeing 4 generations singing and dancing together,.... priceless 💖
COME ON PEOPLE.......
WE NEED THEM TO DO "FAR AWAY EYES" PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
This is a huge staple of their live shows forever.
Look at you guys hitting another Rolling Stones Classic, great song, off a great album. If you have never done Can't You Hear Me Knocking, that should be something you hear soon, it is one of there best songs and jams, it amazes first time listeners. If you have, try Monkey Man, another banger and the official lyric video is cool. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶
Ohhhhh. The sax & guitar duet.....❤❤❤ (can't you hear me knocking)
Oh, and the bongos (?)
This is my FAVORITE Rolling Stones song. I listened to this song over and over when i was a teen.♥
One indication of the Rolling Stones' staying power: In 1989, when they went on tour to promote their "Steel Wheels" album, a number of critics joked about how old they were getting and referring to the tour as the "Steel Wheelchairs" tour.😂
I saw that tour because I thought it was the last one!
From their monumental LP Exile on Main Street…quite literally an exile to France during recording to avert GB taxes at home. A drug addled conglomeration of songs initially considered critically confusing, now considered one of the best rock albums of all time. Time and perspective changes things.
“There’s fever in the funk house now” has to be one of the all time best rock ‘n roll lyrics ever! This song is off of what some people say is the best rock album of all time - I agree! You HAVE to check out these other songs from this classic album: All Down The Line, Loving Cup, Ventilator Blues, Rocks Off, Shine a Light, Sweet Virginia, Turd on the Run - OMG, what an incredible album!’
Try "Far Away Eyes". Mick has a southern type of accent. And it's almost like he's telling you a story.
Far Away Eyes 🤠👍 Rolling Stone's Country and Western ???????
Worth a listen 😉✌️❤️
From their chaotic double album "Exile on Main Street" in 1972, the murky sound has been described as "mud", with Jagger's voice buried in the mud. It is now generally viewed as the Stones' very best album. It took me a few listens to get used to the sound, but then it quickly became my favorite Stones album, with "Ventilator Blues" my favorite track.
'loving Cup" is also a great song THANK YOU FOR THE SMILES
Exile On Main Street is The Stones at their most laid back and I love it. It was very much of the times. Lots of groovy vibes and lots of chronic. In fact I can just picture the stones in a smoke filled recording studio making this album. Many people think of the Stones as Mic Jagger and his band and he is known for his theatrics on stage but I think the best Stones music was made when he blended into the music. 60's and 70's Stones fans - discuss amongst yourselves!
Way more than just chronic - ask Gram Parsons, unfortunately we can't.
To hear a crazy good cover....listen to Linda Rhonstadt cover this song....she REALLY rocks it!!!❤
Apparently Mick was raving to Linda about her Stones cover he was so knocked out by it.
ol nah.. big girl should write her own music for once..lol instead of stealing every song
@@TANTRUMGASM Isn't your mommy calling you up from the basement for supper?
I like this song but I love the Linda Ronstadt cover which was a big hit as well, and her version is how many people heard it for the first time and how they know it. It's great!
Yes, I grew up on Linda's version. It wasn't until many years later I found out it was a Stones song!
@@ButterflyDance444 like Linda's better
@@lamusiclover2264 Me too!
It's a good cover, but come on. A woman as stunningly beautiful as Linda Ronstadt, who could have her pick of most any guy she wanted, channeling a story of confusion about unreliable fellas that she can't get a read on? It's ridiculous. This is a song that requires a guy's point of view. Women completely control the sexual tension in random encounters at bars, casinos, etc.
@@tekharthazenyatta2310 I think you're way over analyzing. you don't have to see what she looks like. them. You're being incredibly superficial.
Happy birthday Rolling Stones keep Rolling ,,👅
Linda Ronstadt did an excellent cover of this song.
Sweet Virginia has a nice country vibe ✌️
rolling stones --- get off my cloud
“Swampy “ is exactly how I’d describe it..
You're so humble...I think you get the Rolling Stones well enough at this point!!!
“Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” and “Monkey Man” are Rolling Stone must hears ❤
Two of my favorite lines from rock lyrics are in this song: “there’s a fever in the funkhouse now” and “I’m the rank outsider” a nickname I gave myself in my career, working for schools, townships, and kids athletic organizations.
This song is great in their live shows! I’ve been fortunate to see them 16 times from 1981-2019. Thank you for doing this one RSR :)
"DEAD FLOWERS" is a Rolling Stone country song
Rolling Stones - Under Cover of the Night - She's so Cold - Emotional Rescue - Start me Up - Angie
My favorite Rolling Stones song. So swampy and gritty, like you're catching them at a Louisiana dive bar.
I've seen them three times live, and this has been my highlight. This is great live...made me like the record even better!
A trio of gems from this era of the Stones need a reaction: "Dance Little Sister" "Rip This Joint" and "Rocks Off." "Rip This Joint" is a relatively short song but it's played at a breakneck pace.
Linda Ronstadt did a cover of this song. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it.
One of the greatest songs they ever did. Ever!
Another great stones tune " It's Only Rock and Roll " is another one you might realy like .
Love the Rolling Stones and this song, but Linda Ronstadt does a cover of the song and you can understand every word she sings. She does change some words, but yeah do listen to her version.
Linda Ronstadt live cover of TD is 🔥. Keith Richards said he wrote the song but Linda owns it.
I love this song! Linda Ronstadt does a great version as well!!
Her live version is excellent
She gets the lyrics wrong.
Linda and her band didn’t know the words. Mick Jagger wrote out words for her. Obviously they weren’t the original lyrics from the Stones version.
Came here to say this!
@@TANTRUMGASM Stop your whining, dick.
Hey guys and gals Linda Ronstadt recorded her own version of this song that was a huge hit and yes, Linda mastered Rolling Stones rock ‘n’ roll, Tom Petty rock ‘n’ roll, country, light opera, jazz standards, etc.
ol nah.. big girl should write her own music for once..lol instead of stealing every song
@@TANTRUMGASM Why don't your write some of your own music?? And then STFU.
So, having what has been called one of the greatest voices, male or female in history, isn’t enough for you? you want her and everyone to be supremely multi-talented? I know a ton of people that think Mick Jagger should stick to writing and he should never open his mouth. My point is that we all Hebard likes and dislikes I’m sure she wishes she could write also. Thanks again for confirming what everyone hates about the Internet with your comment.
@@jeffchampagne5587 lolol, I knw , right ! llool I win again ! I love the control you give me, makes me feel bigger and superior to you lolol god i love the winning lolololol
If looking like a small-minded idiot makes you think you’re winning and makes you feel superior then have at it dude. I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain all that was wrong with what you said
The story of the making of Exile on Main Street is legend. When you read about everything that was going on at the recording location during production, you’ll wonder how an album got made at all let alone such a good one.
Indeed! 🤘😎
This is my favorite Stones song, The Best Rock and Roll Band in the world right here folks I was only 5 when this came out in 1972. I love the Stones my favorite band I have seen Mick and the boys 6 times the first in 1981 as 14 yr old in Buffalo NY the last being as a 52 yr old in 2019 just outside of Barrie Ontario Canada just north of Toronto.
That's the production style of this album - it's like being lost in the middle of an out of control party, it's meant to be dense and disorienting. It's about letting those elements put you in a setting or give you imagery and a vibe not just the pure composition of the song.
The Stones in their purple patch, absolutely filthy growling guitar. Choon!
You should do "Linda Ronstadt Rocks! - Tumbling Dice & You're No Good, Atlanta 1977" on Female Friday. It's just a fantastic version and you can understand the words. 😎😎😎
ol nah.. big girl should write her own music for once..lol instead of stealing every song
@@TANTRUMGASM You have a talent for copy and paste. Maybe put that to better use than repeating the same tired comment here on RUclips.
@@keithrfield you dont make the rules kiddo, lolol! I does what I likes, and never, ever need your approval you mongrel... lololol so, nah.. big girl should write her own music for once..lol instead of stealing every song !
lolol ! buh bye now mutt dog
The Stones ruled the 60’s and the 70’s
Love the Rolling Stones !! This is one of their great songs from their classic period. Another song of their's called HAPPY is also a loose and fun record. They also have another song dipped in the country skillet called FAR AWAY EYES. By the way, Linda Ronstadt has an impressive cover of TUMBLING DICE that carries her signature style. It is one of a handful of times that she really cuts loose to rock.
You guys will really enjoy SHATTERED,
CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING,
ONE HIT TO THE BODY,
& BITCH.
Enjoy
One of my all time favorite tunes. Keith Richards is phenomenal.
What a groove!
Keef Riff-hard! 🎸🚬 👍🏼
Y'all need to hear Linda Ronstadt 's version of this it will blow you away!!!! Would be nice to see you do some more of her she has so many more songs you would like.
This song always makes me think of the Steel Wheels show in '89 at the L.A Coliseum. We were standing outside waiting for the gates to open and we could hear them play this song for their sound check.
The stones are real cool cats they are epic.
This song demonstrates just how soulful the Stones could be. I think it's one of their best.
This whole album is fire! This song has the funkiest groove. One of their best.
A MUST HEAR Early Classic,, The Rolling Stones "Get Off My Cloud"
"Mixed Emotions" is an excellent songs from their later years that doest get much love from any reactors. Could things change? Hint...Hint...
Great reaction to a great song from an equally great album (close to my favorite, at least in fourth place, with STICKY FINGERS being my absolute favorite, BEGGAR’S BANQUET, maybe my second, LET IT BLEED, third, and maybe this one tied with Their Satanic Majesties Request for fourth place). Mick Taylor was the lead guitar player then and is still my favorite lead guitarist on Rolling Stones history. Thanks for choosing the song, Reacting to it and sharing that reaction with us. It’s like reliving it all over again for the first time
This takes me back to when I first met my future husband and we used to tape music from the radio on a reel-to-reel tape recorder and had to keep very quiet, this song was one of my favs
This song was also covered by one of your faves in the mid 70's. (Linda Ronstadt)
There's a hugely cool harmonica solo at the beginning of "Some Girls". Interesting story too: Keith Richards ran into the harmonica player on the streets of New York and was so impressed, he invited him to play on this song. Nasty lyrics too!
One of their best songs. I listen to this every single day. Jagger could not figure why this song was so popular. Keef said when you rock, you have got to have the roll. BAM. Check out the whole album--amazing.
Their songs Fool To Cry, Ruby Tuesday, As Tears Go By, Waiting On a Friend, and Play With Fire, are all great!
You are really reaching back a few years but a nice selection.
If you haven't heard it try the stones "Under assistant west coast promo man". In fact, I am going to listen to it now.
I've said before, Amber, you're so Insightful! 'You know..Gamblin' & Women go Hand In Hand'! :) Great Classic Stones! Thanks Guys!
Exile On Main St is a top 10 all time album. Peak Stones, they were literally exiled because of taxes in Britain, and cut this in the basement of a Chateau in France. Legendary music, legendary musicians, legendary drugs, legendary girlfriends, so, so good. Keep listening!!
Check out "She's So Cold" soon. Another great vibe and we have all met someone like this. I think you will get a kick out of it. Keep up the great work, summer vibes are coming.
Again, with the Stones, it's the guitar work of Keith Richards that makes the song GREAT ! LONG live Keef...! ...Newk from Kentucky
The Stones were able to tackle any genre and own it. Country: Sweet Virginia, Dead Flowers, Far Away Eyes
Funk: Fingerprint File, Hot Stuff, Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)
Punk: Shattered, When the Whip Comes Down
Disco: Miss You
And they definitely mastered the blues and rock n roll.
Not one of my favorites but a great song. Look into Rocks Off or Can't You Hear Me Knockin. Both great songs
Greatest Rock n Roll Band ever 🤘🤘
Tumbling Dice.....one of my alltime favorite Stones songs Thank You :)
Terrific pick. Rolling Stones made a big hit in rock with this song. I love it you guys.
