I’m a retired librarian. I have no problem decluttering books. I’ve gotten rid of most of my books. I learned that I can get nearly any book that I want from the library, or online. Why store them in my house. Where are all my books? I have over 2000 books stored on my Kindle app., audiobooks and other online resources. I don’t need to have the actual book. A lot of textbooks are obsolete after a few years.

What I like about Kindle is that I can make the font as big as I what. I find it much easier to read. I do buy books that I want to make lots of notes in them. Workbooks, craft books, pattern books. When ebooks came out I thought it would be the end of real books, but I have changed my mind on that. Some books just need to be real books. I mostly read fiction, biographies, self help books on my kindle. It’s great for fiction. I read them off my Kindle reader, the iPad is also good. I like to read in bed. The Kindle is great for that.

Hi Sophia! I can totally relate. I love my books, but, although quite big, I only have a finite space to put them. So, yes, I also have a very hard time letting go of books. They are like a part of who I am, they tell my life story. Besides, my father, who passed away two years ago used tto gift me books signed by him. So, those are a keep for me for sure. Then I lived in three different countries and bought books in each of them and managed to bring them together to my current house, including my childhood and teen years books. So, those are a keep as well... hahah, in conclusion, I'm only capable of let go of new purchases that didn't absolutely love!

I need to declutter my nursing school books but I haven't been able to let them go. I have hours worth of care plans I hand typed out and I can't just throw them away. They have all of the instructor's comments and grades on them. There's a lot of blood, sweat and tears in these reports. I know the information has changed in the books but I can't throw the old ones out yet. I have all of my other books on my kindle for the most part. I do still have printed copies of some of my favorites. I just love books.

Sometimes in the next few weeks I will get to my school notes. As much as I would love to sit down and reread them, the reality is that I never will. At the end of the day, the testament of the blood and sweat is in our career, the income we have or had to support our families and the identities we formed along the way. I am realizing that the notes, whether here or not, do not change who I am. I am rooting for you!!

Books are my friends… some books I don’t even have to reread, I just can hold it and revisit the whole story. I think it’s hard for me to downsize them because I envision one of those tall libraries with a ladder and big comfy chairs in my “dream space”. Some of those in your keep pile were some I donated in my last (difficult) declutter. I forgot how much I liked them!

Great book declutter Sophia. Well done for enabling yourself to part with so many! I must say you have wonderful resolve to stay true to your goal of making space for the things you love by forgoing the opportunity to keep lower priority items, like the books you’ve already read, in order to achieve that goal. I find it incredibly hard to declutter books because for me they are like “old friends” and the books that “speak to me” and are kept feel like they represent a journal of my life. They don’t all tell stories that relate directly to my own experiences, but they all deeply resonate in some way. So I understand the way you feel about your college books, because that is how I feel about mine (political philosophy and general psychology in my case). My college books pull like magnets towards my memories of self discovery and deeper self understanding; and my memories of pleasurable reading experiences.

I still have “too many” & am still trying. I’ve become a devotee of the library for almost all my fiction reads & rarely purchase those anymore. My reference collections in genealogy, history, special places, etc are much harder. My Christmas book collection is to me what your etiquette book collection is to you. I’m sure many here can identify. But if you can do it, maybe I can give it another go 🤔. Love to hear your “reasoning”, helps put things in perspective. Thank you!! 💐

You are absolutely right, decluttering is a process and sometimes you have to wait till you're ready; especially with books for me. I read a book, years ago, by a woman who was very frugal. She was able to let go of most of her books when she realized that her local library carried almost all the books she loved. I finally realized that, too. I only keep mostly reference books I'll use, a few favorites I reread every year, or two, and one absolute favorite author. Doing this helps prevent me from stockpiling books again. I use my library, a lot, share books within my book club and family, or use my kindle (although I love reading a real book, the best). Good for you, I know how hard it is to let go of books. Just reread Nickle and Dimed and passed it on. Good book.

    Good Day 😊 Sophia
I’m so impressed today as I witnessed you actually getting lots of books out of your nest. Awesome in this area, letting go of all the things that has served its purpose.
Now Scott may have to let go of 1 or 2 this year 😂no pressure… jk
Proud of all your progress thus far, keep going young lady.
    👍💕😊👏🏽

I honestly have no opinion about your choice to keep or declutter. I only appreciate the decision you made years ago to conquer your “great challenge”. It’s been such a beautiful journey and I look forward to the years to come!!

I love John Douglas’s books. I’ve been listening to 18 Tiny Deaths which is about the beginnings of modern forensics and free in audible

It's become easier for me over time especially with the ease of acquiring most books now with the internet. I've gotten rid of hundreds of books over the years and I can't think of one that I regret. Have I purchased the same book twice? Maybe, but it's not common and it would be worth it to me to do that every once in awhile vs holding onto books that I know I'll never read/read again and someone else can perhaps be enjoying. God job on your book declutter! It's a hard one!!!

Have you thought about writing a book about decluttering? I am sure lot of us would like it. Takes time to do it, I do understand.
In the past you suggested to read a book including decluttering and life around it. I think people like you for being true.
I would love to read your book regarding decluttering challenges and solution during your life. Although we can see through your youtube channel 👍

I understand, it took me probably 30 years to give in a pitch my nursing books! I had even kept my boxes of lecture notes. I figured that most of the info was either outdated or simply available online. I did keep my first textbook " Fundamentals of Nursing" as a keepsake but even pitched my battered Med Surg book. That book you had on Abusive Personality! I have a situation in our family that I truly wish I could talk to you about !! In general. a female person in our family will not permit her husband to work without her present, walk through a store with his glasses on ( yes, you read that correctly!), wear his glasses at church, at family gatherings, etc, etc !!! He is a intelligent , educated professional person that has now went into business for himself to accomodate her demands. It is all VERY difficult to deal with. We cant even talk to him one on one , or on the phone without her present. HELP ! Thanks , Luella

Love the book decluttering videos, the stories behind the literature are so interesting. And you are soooo right about the fact that one should be ready to let go of the own belongings. I saw videos on YT where people were crying (!) while letting go of their stuff. Only because they thought the only "right" declutter had to be done under a lot of pressure. That's not healthy in my eyes, not at all. Everything has it's time.

I would see if you could find any of these in like an e-book option if you really wanted to keep them. That way they wouldn't take up the space that you needed, but you would still have the book.

Hey! Long time viewer. So amazed by your clarity and how you are ready to let go more. My sister is in school to be a forensic psychologist. What book would you recommend I get her to help her with her studies? I want to give her a book that says, "I support you!"
I've been wanting to ask you this for a while, but it slipped my mind!

Get her the original one and only psychopatis sexualis by kraft Ebbing. Or sex crime and sex aggression by schlessinger. Both are considered standards.
