Mercedes Benz CLK (W208) - Reliable, fast, and (too) comfortable

  • Today, I’m going to tell you the story about a car of my favorite brand - Mercedes Benz CLK W208 produced from 1997 to 2003.
    I would describe the CLK not as a sports coupe but as a very comfortable and reliable GT car. It will not give you a breathtaking ride on a serpentine road in mountains, but it will bring you anywhere by a highway and give you a lot of joy and comfort while you drive there.
    It isn’t a very sporty car actually. But it is a rather fast and very maneuverable car with a great appearance. It maybe isn't a car for a young driver with hot blood and a need for speed, but if you are over thirty and want a fast but reliable and safe drive, you will definitely like it.
    And it also had a performance version made by AMG and a very interesting GT-racing history.

    As I promised, here is the link to the very good video about the racing prototypes related to the CLK:

    Just bought CLK 320 for 500e. Seller told it engine had stalled and wouldn't start. He took it to local shop for diagnose and it had fault codes for misfiring and 2. O2-sensor.
    I borrowed coils and maf from my other CLK.
    Still had same problems.
    Then i realised tank might be filled with diesel, because it was smoking very heavily on every start and smelled like old diesel, and these problems started right after he filled up the tank.
    After flushing fuel system with 98, it started, but was running badly and smoking. After idling for a while it was running much better, then the smoke went away and now it runs like new!

    I had a CLK 430 with full AMG kit from 2005 to 2014….i still miss that car and smile each time I see one on the road. It did need wheelarch rust treatment twice and the gearbox needed to be rebuilt once, but I still have such fondness for that car. Such a beautiful design, so alluring to the eye. Your video has made me consider buying another one before they mostly disappear.

    Great video, great car! I bought a 98 CLK320 in 2020 with 151,000 milles on it for $800...changed plugs/wires/serpentine belt/ idler & tensioner pullys + radiator for less than $1500.
    I love this car like my own child!
    Most comfortable and reliable car i've ever owned. Since i never see any on the road, it was nice to see someone else share their love of this model... thank you!

    I drive a 200 Kompressor with a 5 speed manual and I gotta say, me and my brother literally revived this car. I got it for very cheap, but we had to put a lot of work into it and it ain't even 100% yet. Once it is "100%" I will be modifying it.

    I own an 03 430 cab and absolutely love the car! I can attest that it is underpowered for a V8 and it lacks the punch of a 'true sports car, but the ride is comfortable! It's got just over 73K on it. I've replaced a few hydraulic parts for the top and the engine and transmission mounts. It is soooo smooth! Truly love this car. Thanks for the informative video!

      I own at 05 CLK 500. I think of it more as a luxury sporty car. The 500 has more horsepower than play yours by they are basically the same car. Stop you won't outrun a mustang GT in a straight away but you will probably outrun it in the curves. Atmos true sports cars are tiring to drive and rough. These are smooth like curious and just a pleasure to drive. I'm a trucker and hate driving but I cannot wait to get into my CLK

    Have 200k with italian 98' 141 kW silver coupe version, not gonna lie it's fantastic car with sporty dynamic and comfortable handling. M111 engine ir very reliable creature of MB, just change oil, filters some old rubber parts and good to go. On the other hand if you are living in the north you probably gonna met big rusty problems if you drive that lady as a daily. Easy to maintain, easy to modificate (you can get lots of horses just playing with kompressor pulley and exhaust). On the other hand it becomes solid classic car - chassis parts gets higher price and it's very difficult to find, for ex. good condition oem fender costs about 300 bucks. Love to kick down the throttle, love to heat up the brakes in the curvy roads, love just to look at it.

    I bought an 05 clk500 add these cars are a dream to drive. What's the best car I've ever driven by Miles the price was shockingly low. They handle like a dream. It won't outrun a mustang GT in a straight line but it will blow it away in the curves... And you'll be comfortable and in style. If you want the sports car version you should go for an 08 CLK 550. But I'm absolutely in love with these cars

    Пришёл сюда по ссылке с твоего мото-канала. Очень классно и информативно, но с таким сильным акцентом, да ещё и знакомым голосом, неожиданно странно воспринимать английскую речь))

    • @wurstmotors
      @wurstmotors  Год назад +1

      Самое забавное, что в жизни у меня почти нет акцента. Но когда читаешь длинные тексты, мышцы языка устают, язык буквально заплетается, и внезапно проявляется акцент. :) Борюсь с этим.

    • @TheMadorangee30
      @TheMadorangee30 Год назад

      Охотно верю. За собой тоже замечал, что при обычных привычных разговорах или small talk акцент сильно меньше, чем при долгих переговорах или технических консультациях))
      Стало любопытно, как нэйтив-спикеры воспринимают такую речь. Вроде бы, синтаксис и грамматика на месте, т.ч. проблем, связанных с манерой говорящего, не должно быть.

    • @wurstmotors
      @wurstmotors  Год назад +1

      @@TheMadorangee30 В основном, воспринимают нормально, вроде бы. Но если у кого-то есть претензия к содержанию видео, то и акценту достаётся :) В комментах к видео про MGB RV8 это видно :)

    • @wurstmotors
      @wurstmotors  Год назад +1

      I know that V6 engines are often used for modifications because they have a lot of spare mechanical resource and can hold higher compression.

    • @SebastianEbel_M111E20ML
      @SebastianEbel_M111E20ML Год назад +1

      The most easy way have much more performance on a 4cyl 200k or 230k is to install a bigger crankshaft-wheel or a smaller kompressor-pulleye to give the kompressor a higher speed and with an ecu chip you can easily bring a 230k to 250hp and over 400NM torque

    • @SebastianEbel_M111E20ML
      @SebastianEbel_M111E20ML Год назад

      @@wurstmotors i don´t know about modification of v6 engine, in germany it is much more common to use a 4cyl-supercharged 230k and to change the compressor-pulleye to a lower diametre and/or bring the serial crankshaft-wheel to a bigger diametre. But it´s also possible to install a supercharger on a 430 or to use the v6 supercharged engine of the w203 AMG C32, which is the same basic engine family of the m112 engines.
