In '95 it made its mark, the MG F was born,
A sports car from a British heart, a legend to adorn.
Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive it boasts, with balance so supreme,
A marvel on the winding roads, fulfilling every dream.
Designed by hands with passion, its lines so sleek and true,
A 1.8 K-series roared, with VVC it flew.
With Hydragas suspension, the ride was smooth and fair,
It hugged the curves with grace and ease, like floating on the air.
A soft-top roof for open...

MG F - A car that puts a smile on your face
Просмотров 5912 часов назад
Today, I’m going to tell you a story about the best-selling British 2-seating roadster of the 90’s - the MG F, produced from 1995 to 2002. In total, about 77 thousand MG Fs were produced. That’s a really decent number for such a niche car. The MG F was a revival of MG’s glorious history of building small cool roadsters, like the MG Midget or the famous MG B. As you may expect, driving MG F was ...

A few more corrections: 1) The hydraulic system has only 1 pump. The rest is controlled by valves. 2) The steering system is still directly mechanical. The oil for the steering power assistance system is however taken from the hydraulic suspension system via a pressure reduction valve. In every other aspect it is however strictly conventional. Maybe that hydraulic connection confused you but since the car already creates hydraulic pressure it doesn't need a seperate hydraulic pump for the steering system. That was already the case in the DS. 🙂

The roadholding of the series 1 is already excellent, although the later Activa 2 system indeed improved it a bit further. If you want to make it “smaller” and a bit more “German” you only have to put it in the sports mode which switches off the extra spheres. Wihtout these the steering is actually rather stiff for a Citroen. The handling is NEVER cumbersome or dangerous! The only strange behaviour is that it sometimes raises and then lowers its rear suspension if you stand at traffic lights with your foot on the brakes. It then tries to correct the fact that the nose is fixed in a bit of a nosedown stance. They should have introduced a 6th standstill sensor to fix that. But it’s nothing more then an amusing quirk once you get used to it. Furthermore other road users often are amazed by it. And lets face it: The XM is the last Citroen in which you “take off” every time you start it after more then a few hours. You are however right about the many early electrical problems but they mostly affected the lesser important luxury stuff. Irritating but survivable and the series 2 version indeed fixed most of of those problems. The bad reputation is mostly being sustained by those who never came close to one. 😁

The design of the XM is indeed an interesting and complex story. Although officially called a Bertone design and as such indeed penned by Deschamps when he worked there things where a lot less clear behind closed doors. Firstly it carries a lot of details which where developed by Citroens own styling department for earlier studies. Also the final detailing was done internally, which still influenced the front and rear styling. Furthermore the interior was designed by Citroen itself. I actually wrote a few articles about it for the Dutch XM club magazine, called Ambience Extreme. Let me know if you are interested.

There were full automatic (the ones that failed often) and as mine one, that can shift gears touching knob to the left to reduce and the opposite to increase. Only thing I don't like is the fixed rear windows, a design flaw, fixed in the 209. 180000km and running...

Here is a film from an old TopGear episode (Pre-Clarkson I think). It features the Tatra T613/5, designed by the same people who made the T700, but developed in The United Kingdom by a small development business run by a man called Tim Bishop. He and Mark Berry (who worked as his engine tuning guru) turned the basic T613 into a run of five prototypes for Tatra, who later did the T700 restyle and interior refresh on their own. This is the very same car I drove back from Pribor (CZ) to Fosters Booth (UK) in one shot between Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Next to nothing on the roads of Europe or even the UK allowed me to pretty much keep the throttle pinned to the floor the entire journey. This car was good for around 140mph and kept it up for hundreds of miles on end, a memorable trip indeed. I worked with Tim and Mark, with a handful of other engineers and specialists, to create these frankly astonishing machines. They drove like giant go-karts but as softly as a Bentley. ruclips.net/video/0AKkdUe0dEY/видео.html

Hi, I own a Citroen XM Y4 V6 (1998 with facelift and the newer V6) since November 2018 and use it as my daily. Most of your video is very informative and accurate. But as @famousutopias I have to absolutely argue your comment that the suspension is dangerous! 11th July 2020, we were on a dead straight A-category road at the allowed 100kph when just in front of us an SUV pulled out of the forest. There was no visible junction and I checked later it was a tiny forest road with a no entry sign. I could not expect that. Heading straight towards that SUV I could slow down to around 80-85kph, then I had to decide in an instant: Either crash head on into him or steer to the ditch. Head on at that speed I would not have survived, so I went for the ditch. Ditch spit me out the other side, I even had to steer accordingly as the road itself was dead straight. This XM allowed me that. I hardly even felt it in the steering wheel, XM ploughed through that ditch at 80kph as if it was nothing. I am absolutely convinced every other car I ever had before, that included the XM-sister Peugeot 605, a Peugeot 205 GTI, a 4x4 Subaru Impreza, would have rolled in that moment. The XM simply was not botherted by it at all! I had a 15 months old baby on board! This XM not only saved my life, it changed the life of my son forever! Accepted mine is the newer Y4 (1994 facelift) with the hydractive2 suspension, I would not be able to tell you how bad an early Y3 was in conering. But I do doubt a lot it was bad. Ever heard of the Elch/Mouse test the XM’s little sister Xantia Activa is to the day the best and safest car ever in this test. This Xantia is also 1998 and did not even have ESP. And this test is about cornering, hardly possible that a Xantia without ESP beats Ferraris, Porsches and the likes if the base car was so dangerous? Another observation is: Why do people think Citroen HP is not sporty? Again mine is 1998, so sadly I do not have the DIRAVI steering any more. But what everybody forgets: The brakes going over the HP means the big Citroens do not actually have a brake server. No brake server means yes a little more foot power, but far less brake pedal travel, firmer pedal, the LHM oil instead of brake fluid means it doesn’t attract water, it will never boil, never vapourise. It is always the same accurate brake feel! It simply does not know brake fading! Even if you load the rear, more weight on the rear = more pressure on the rear = more brake bias to the rear, the car always behaves the same and is super easy to handle. I had a Peugeot 205 GTI before and of course it would be brave to say the XM is as sporty. But the 205 GTI had a short wheel base, was nippy but also bouncy on the rear axle and that could indeed be dangerous at high speeds. The XM has not only the stiff and accurate brake pedal, bumps and holes on the entry of a corner just do not impress her one bit! Absolutely nobody with common suspension manages a combination of soft ride and sporty accuracy like that at all! The car is functional as well with its tailgate, large boot (biggest estate, though mine is a conventional one) and I keep hearing auto testers saying it feels much smaller than it is, which is pretty much hitting the point. I had the 605 before, I had it for 8 years, I loved the 605, but the 605 did feel like a heavy car and still would not have safed my and Julian’s life on that 11th July 2020! I loved that 605 to bits, I had it many years, but the XM is more functrional, more comfy, but most surpising of all: a lot more sporty, engaging and fun to drive! Nearly like a 205 GTI, only safer too! Where the 205 GTI was wild and fun, yes the XM is less wild, but carries my kid, pram and luggage and it still is a lot of fun! Vandalising corners the 205 GTI gets unsettled, the XM doesn’t get unsettled at all and its brakes are way more accurate and pointy too, and that exactly because of the HP! Final remark: RELIABILITY: The system is even quite simple, but a Citroen trademark. It is tricky for nobody else developped into this direction (sadly not even Citroen after falling into Peugeot’s claws). YES: If you lose pressure you do have a serious problem, suspension, steering, brakes, all gone at once... But what people overlook: This system runs on 120 bars pressure. The pipes are stainless steel and constantly filled with mineral oil. They do not rust! Not even after 26 years (which is the age of my XM). If there is a leak, then it is a return pipe, they are made of rubber and yes they do age, but you can basically fix that with a piece of garden hose! Maybe that is over simplified. But I hope I gave an understandable description why this system is so great, and in fact simple, and in fact not dangerous at all. @famousutopias had his life saved twice, I had my life saved and my son was saved from becoming an orphan aged 15 months. There is a reason why I will never ever forget the date 11th July 2020! This suspension system is neither dangerous, nor complicated, sorry! This car saved my life and changed the life of a loving son who was at that point only 15 months old! It saved my entire family! This wet grass deep ditch, I still can’t believe she just ploughed through as if it was nothing. Come the next corner, she still is sharp and fun to the day! HP Citroens are comfy? They are far far more than that, they are safe and fun, right in contrary to your video!

I would absolutely agree- I have a later 3.0 V6 from 2000, probably one of the last ever produced, and it always surprised me- when you start to push it out of the stereotypical driving style associated with hydropneumatic Citroëns (ie start drive more aggressively and assertively), it is actually responsive and fun to drive in this way. Benefits of Hydractive 2? Quite possibly. I love how you have compared it to your 205GTi and not found it wanting, considering the size and class segment the car was produced to compete in. Matches my findings. Always found it very capable on smaller single carriageway UK A roads. I find it bizarre that in the UK the XM does not appear to have reached proper classic status; it is a wonderful and idiosyncratic motor car quite unlike its contemporaries. In use it was more reliable than most of the Mercedes I have owned over the last decade. It deserves proper recognition. Mine is sadly off-road and in need of restoration. But I will love the XM until the day I die.

@@rohan_of_arc9895 Thank you Rohan, great reply and analysis. A V6 from 2000 would really be one of the last ones. Mine is from March 98 and one of the rare manual ES9 V6s. And I think the manual gearbox helps the sporty impression. My 605 was auto and was comparatively lame and felt heavy despite having the same engine. Yes, the 205 GTI comparison seems daring, but I opted for a drastic comparison to underline the surprising sportiness of the XM. As you say, maybe it is a Hydractive2 thing? Many remember the 205 GTI as this nippy, nimble hot hatch. But testers have said the XM feels much smaller than it is. And again thank you for confirming my observations, saying that the XM is responsive and fun to drive. Of course the XM is not as nimble and light as a 205 GTI, but when you want to have an engaging fun drive, it is amazing how much feel you get from the non-server HP brakes and at the same time she is not unsettled at all by bumps and pot holes when entering corners. Where you might have to fight the 205 GTI, the XM simply is sovereign and does exactly what you want her to do. What you say about single lane A-roads, funny, you know what a dream of mine is? Take her to a huge UK trip again. I used to live in the UK and visited at least annually, but see this unfortunate time frame: I got the XM in Nov. 2018, I got a baby boy in April 2019, so a bit careful with long trips, but then Covid 19 happened, Brexit on top of it, so I haven’t been to my 2nd home for 6 years now :-( My big dream is to take that XM to UK, the drive up to UK will be very relaxing, but what I really can’t wait: I have to take her over roads like Honister and Hardknott pass and similar! I have done so before in the 205 GTI and in a 106 Sport, but I am sure that XM will surprise me yet again! And maybe that again shows how amazing this HP suspension is, how it can combine both Worlds like none other. The 205 GTI and 106 Sport = great fun on those bumpy A-roads and passes, but a nightmare to drive them on the motorway up to Northern England or Wales. I could take a Mercedes S-Class up the motorway, but it will be boring and frustrating rubbish on Honister etc… The XM is not only a perfect cruiser, she is very responsive and accurate, yet doesn’t know bumps? Can’t wait!

I bought an 05 clk500 add these cars are a dream to drive. What's the best car I've ever driven by Miles the price was shockingly low. They handle like a dream. It won't outrun a mustang GT in a straight line but it will blow it away in the curves... And you'll be comfortable and in style. If you want the sports car version you should go for an 08 CLK 550. But I'm absolutely in love with these cars

I've owned my 1997 S8 for 11 years and it never gets boring. I think this is due to the way it delivers the power. It's only 40 BHP more than the 4.2 A8 but it's a completely different driving experience. The A8 accelerates very smoothly, but the S8 surges forward with such ferocious power and just keeps accelerating. I used to be a mechanic and carry out my own maintenance, but due to back and hip problems I can no longer do it so a friend of mine who owns a garage is now carrying out some work for me. I decided to get as much done as my money would allow. The car is having 4 new springs, 4 new shock absorbers, all new suspension arms, 4 new brake discs, 4 new brake calipers, new brake pads all round, 2 new handbrake cables, a new serpentine belt, new cambelt, new water pump, new thermostat and all new idlers, tensioners and pulleys. I can just about handle the spark plugs, oil, and new filters myself. It's been very costly just buying the parts (I got them from Autodoc in Germany) but the labour for the work isn't costing too much as my friend is fitting it in around other jobs. The car also has a full length Milltek stainless steel exhaust which sounds beautiful without being intrusive. I would thoroughly recommend getting an S8 D2, they look amazing and go like a rocket. Thank you for an excellent video, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
