Yeah, even if you don't look at references, you still copy. Where? You copy your memory, you literally copy what you see unconsciously. Art teacher that don't let you copy is not a good teacher imo.
To be clear, Im NOT telling people to Copy or Plagiarise the works of other artist and call it your own. Im asking people to consider looking at things that inspires them and copy them, study them and steal the philosophy behind it ( rather than the actual work itself) and put YOU into the mix to create an actual piece of Original work. Im going to leave a qoute by one the most influential filmmakers of all time to provide more clarity here. "We want you to take from us. We want you, at first, to steal from us, because you can't steal. You will take what we give you and you will put it in your own voice and that's how you will find your voice. And that's how you begin. And then one day someone will steal from you" - Francis Ford Coppola Check these other Videos that might help you out - 1) 5 Tips to Improve your Drawings(as a beginner) - ruclips.net/video/q1WLOQBvffI/видео.html 2) The 'Perfect Drawing' Pen - ruclips.net/video/VlZOSODFHsQ/видео.html 3) Why you Should Copy other Artist - ruclips.net/video/sOTycVw44Zo/видео.html
Lakshmi Viswanathan Hahahaha Kesh really can make someone's day by just simply replying :'D Anyways, the main point of the video is to tell everyone that stealing(or looking for ideas from someone, to be positive) is *not* *a* *bad* *thing* , it's actually an inspiration we get in order for us *to* *come* *up* *with* *something* *new* . An example of that is: Searching for a real-life image/picture of a forest then use it as a guide to create a fantasy world Or taking a photo of a Fennec Fox as a reference for you to create new characters :)
I heard the saying "good artist copy but great artist steal". Your video really help me understand this! Thanks! Here is another saying for you! earth without "art" is "eh"
I airbrush motorcycle art in realism, but I always used some sort of reference and always painted to someone else's requirements and it got restricting. That's when I started Doodling on my YT channel. I pull only from my imagination, what I want to draw, and the way I think/want it to look. It is very free-ing! I'm still not sure where I'm going with it, but i love it. Thanks for the video bro.
This was crazy inspirational. I've been in such a slump trying to fix my style and make it seem more appealing, but had no idea how to go about it. This helped so much, and I'm really glad you popped up in my recommended!
So true lol in college we were told basically the same thing but they called it “Sampling” and it was just a good way to get started on your at work. Say “ I love the idea of doing this and this from both these works so I’m gonna make my own work with that in mind” but you do it respectively as you would want your own work treated.
Hey Man, Just To Tell You. You Have Been Such An Inspiration When I Was On The Verge Of Quitting Art I Found Your Channel And If I Didn’t I Would Of Probaly Quit Ty So Much❤️
The best lesson art school taught me was to take inspiration from others, and make it my own. Don't try to photocopy, but instead, show your vision of it.
Dude this is great -- this is kind of how I learned to draw. I'm on social media and I find styles I like and adapt or interpret what I like the most their style into my own art. I HIGHLY recommend this to all artists out there 😁
Thank you, Kesh. I remember when we did any drawing or art at school, the one thing we weren't allowed to do was to 'copy'! "Teacher, teacher, so-and-so is copying!" You were supposed to produce "original work" and I don't think I ever learned any techniques. And plus, the pressure to produce original art works gives you a big ego and false pride. Once in a blue moon when you manage to create something, you will think you are the Great Doer, or many artists can only create under the influence. This is the Western perspective, by the way. Whereas, if you know, you are unique and original (which is 100 % true) and you are only playing with ideas that already exist, that feels freer. Free to create and free from the illusions of the individual ego.
Gosh reading my mind again Kesh, I was literally just thinking to myself about the importance of this these last few days XD Awesome video as always bro! :D
Hey @Kesh! Loved your video. You made me realize that ORIGINAL actually means IDENTITY. The recombination of elements to create your own IDENTITY. That's awesome. It was funny to cause as I was watching your video I was thinking to myself how you were doing what you were talking about ie... :stealing from how to steal like an artist...you did this by making a youtube video. And then I loved how you recognized that in the end. Great video! thanks!
Your awsome! I already knew the concept at the base of the discussion you brought with this video but the way you talk about it made me learn something new, another point of view about something I learnt time ago
I want to say thank you. It took me awhile to realize why I wasn't improving as an artist. Now I realize its because I kept deviating from the trends and kept being a hipster telling others "Thats too mainstream"
You really inspire me to start drawing and getting of my computer and over the last couple mouths I have been drawing every day and I am starting to get pretty good and I think i might me getting my drawing stile
AWESOME VID REALLY. It really got a thought in me. I now know the difference between Stealing like an artist and stealing like a thief, I also understood that Stealing and copying are VERY different from each other. Thank you for making another awesome vid like always :D
I love your videos...very inspiring.. and this video explains it well...learn from other artists and let their work inspire you to create your own....great work 💕
Hi Kesh, Your videos are so inspiring for me, and i absolutely agree with you but i have a problem... i am good at realism art and i love drawing fanart and fandom stuff but realism art does not help me a lot this way... i just want to find a unique way to create cartoon characters so i can seat down and draw from my mind and im kinda dissapointed from the resaults...(ok because i dont know what else to say ill stop here😂😂😂) Again thanks a lot for all of your useful advise!
May all artists be blessed with authenticity and a non-judgemental place to create art. ❤️ May all inner artists are unleashed and all inner callings heard and answered. ❤️
