    NOW AVAILABLE!

    1 year on since the first preview video was put live, finally the game is complete! And it's amazing!!! SPOILER ALERT This is the full game, with intros, ending, music in full, etc. If you still play Amstrad games then GO PLAY THIS FIRST and don't ruin the surprise and fun!!
    01:50 Intro
    05:17 Title Screen
    06:31 Level 1
    The story...
    A long time ago, the Amstrad received the port of the legendary coin-op R-Type, it was OK but it was a rush job and was just completely ported from the (excellent) Speccy version. Very little enhancements were made, apart from workarounds to get it displaying correctly on the CPC, this resulted in further overheads and thus ended up being slower and far less impressive than the Spectrum original. The Easter Egg team began work on improving the game back in December 2009, now two years later you get to see the completed job! What started out as just improving the graphics, sound effects and music, turned into a massive rewrite of the game improving and enhancing many aspects and introducing even more new stuff. The original Amstrad programmer Keith Goodyer even turned up on the CPC Wiki forums to assist and give his side of the story! Then Bob Pape the Spectrum version programmer came forward with some of his original code! That then became the base for this remake...
    Now we have an amazing improvement and a port all Amstrad fans can be proud of...
    Enjoy!
    (re)Programmed by - Easter Egg team
    Code : Fano
    Graphics : TotO
    Sound effects & Music : iXien
    (** PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ON AN EMULATOR, THINGS LOOK AND MOVE A LOT NICER ON A REAL AMSTRAD! **)

    Just goes to show that the CPC hardware was never in doubt, it was the lack of effort by the programmers of the original version who just transferred over the Spectrum Z80 code and saved themselves having to create a true CPC game.

    R-Type 128K Remake really shows that CPC is capable of much more than the original 'Speccy-port' version. Even without using CPC hardware tricks, R-Type 128K is smooth and looks great.
    Screen updates at about 15 FPS(?) and is based on original ZX Spectrum code. It's uses emulated character blocks (32x24, 4x8 pixel blocks, sprites/gfx), but with full 16 colors per block.
    If bent to absolute limits, it might be possible to tweak out 25 or even 50 FPS full screen/overscan using CPC hardware.

    This version of R-Type could probably sell CPC's back in the day.It easily puts many other 8-bit versions (including the old Amstrad "official" version) to shame.It's amazing what you can still do with this machine,provided you know well how to program for it.Congrats.

    Big improvement over the original. Scrolling is just a hardware issue on the Amstrad, it will never be as smooth as on a C64, and people shouldn't expect it to be. But this looks quite good imo. :)

    Incredible remake! And it isnt just the change to mode 0 as there is so many little details going on that wasnt there before. The added intro and music really sweetens the deal of cause. Kinda surpriced that the game is just 30 mins long .. my brain must has been "brainwashed" by the endless re-playes of the original game so i end up thinking it to be longer as well :D

  • @TotOOntHeMooN
    @TotOOntHeMooN 11 лет назад +2

    The arcade version is colorful and the gameplay count on that.
    So, the goal was not to copy the Spectrum port, as it was already done with the original version. Then, I recommend you to play this game on a real CPC and not judge it on the youtube video or an emulator play.
    I know the cpcwiki page, I have updated it 2 years ago with the different graphics, to show how it's more arcade accurate to get the game in 16 colours instead of 4....

  • @ikonsgr

    Dont get mad my friend!
    I have already play it on a real cpc, and i truly think it's one of the best shoot'em ups for amstrad cpc!
    The only thing i said was that, i wondered if the game might look even better on a 320X200X4 colours mode.
    And the reason i say that, is because i liked very much the
    looks of the Level 2 mock-up, redesigned by MacDeath presented on cpc wiki, which was at 320X200 with 4 colours! Also,i noticed that there is a HUGE improvement from the spectrum version too! ;-)

    The Speccy version was not monochrome, but because the Amstrad version was a lazy port they used the same resolution where the Amstrad could only produce 4 colours, ironically.

    Hardware (CRTC) can set screen start address in 1 character (4 pixels in 160x200) resolution.
    2 pixel resolution is a HSYNC length -trick which works on (most?) original Amstrad monitors/emulators, but not with other displays. With 5us HSYNC time (default=14us), screen is scrolled 2 pixels to the right.
    To have 1 pixel smooth scrolling by hardware, you have to use an additional 16KB page of graphics shifted by 1 pixel. Check a new 16KB ROM game 'Relentless' which uses all these these tricks.

      @SHINOBHS 9 лет назад

      𐏏 WertwuzuiwetuiT WertzuI 𐏏 I have not seen any CPC game to make 50 fps in my life. All of them skip frames, around 6 to 9 frames per 10. Spectrum on the other hand has some games that skip 1 per 2. If someone knows some games that do 50 fps on these systems maybe they can tell us.

    • @1xWertzui

    Thank you for your comment. About the screen mode, R-Type is a fast shmups and the colours add gameplay features that are not possible with less.
    So, I'm sure that you are wrong because the 4 colours result is too close to the spectrum version... The same that you critical as "inferior capabilities". ;)

  • @Abrimaal

    • @gwishart
      @gwishart 5 лет назад

      It's a bit harsh blaming the developer for this one, Activision only gave Keith Goodyer three weeks to write the Amstrad version compared with the seven months the ZX Spectrum version had taken. It's hardly surprising he was forced to use most of the same code and graphics from the Spectrum version.

    • @teddym2808

      @@gwishart Ok, the publishing house for allowing it to be released then and putting the time restraints on him. Fair?

  • @ikonsgr
    @ikonsgr 11 лет назад

    Btw, the arcade version was indeed colorful but don't forget that it also was at a much higher resolution from 160X200, and that also counts on gameplay, don't you think? :-)

  • @ikonsgr
    @ikonsgr 11 лет назад

    Well,spectrum version was in practice monochrome,so even an "upgrade" in 4 colours would do a BIG difference,imo (amstrad's original version was almost monochrome too as,sadly,was a fast made port from spectrum's version)
    Anyway, the point is that,in my eyes,this new version that uses 160X200mode,results in having so bulky pixels,that instead of having distinct graphical shapes,you end up with "multi colour digitized blurs"!
    Take a look at rtype presentation at cpcwiki for a "comparison"!

      +Ivar Fiske The idea was to do a better CPC port from the Spectrum version. But, we have never expected to redo and improve so much things when the project was started... Finally, I imagine that less time was required to redo it from scratch and to get a smoother scrolling at end.

  • @ikonsgr
    @ikonsgr 11 лет назад +1

    Very nice effort and shows how "underetsimate" machine was amstrad cpc back then, because most of the games was ported from the inferior in capabilities spectrum!
    Anyway, don't get me wrong, but i think that using the original 320X200 mode with 4colours could result in an even better looking game. 160X200 mode although 16colours made it more "vivid" it seems to loose a lot from the very bulky pixel....
    Maybe somethning like this: cpcwiki.eu/imgs/8/82/Level2_plus.bmp ;-)

    at the end of the commercial life of the CPC, a few games were released which were far more technically accomplished than any other game due to the experience got by the developers. When you got only 3 weeks to do the port, it's all but a lazy port !
    About the arcade game, it's 384x256 (with 32x 16 coulours palettes).
    So, no systems is able to done a good conversion in 80/90s.
    In the team, we love the arcade game and it's why we done our best to be faithful.
    All the musics, most of the SFx, and the bonus and boss week points colour scheme, to be close to the original gameplay and some background animated fx.
    With respect to the Macdeath mockup, the Mode 1 not allow that.

    What i meant is that amiga offers the POTENTAIL to make even better than arcade games,as amiga hardware where light years ahead of everything else back in 1985, when it was released.
    But unfotunately amiga suffered from the same "virus" as amstrad:
    It was called "atari st port"-itis similar to "spectrum port"-itis!
    Only in the later years (~early 90's) appeared games that truly exploit amiga hardware but unfortunately, until then, the "others" had already "catch up and pass".... :-(

    • @TheTurnipKing
      @TheTurnipKing 10 лет назад +2

      Because time and money meant it had to be a port from the Spectrum (where, it must be noted, the game was pretty damn impressive). Mode 1 most closely matches the resolution of the Sinclair machine.
      redrawing all the graphics for the amstrad wasn't an option. The irony is that Mode 1 on the Amstrad actually has a more restrictive color palette than the Speccy, meaning the visuals actually wind up worse.
      Obviously the Amstrad was capable of better, but it was either this or nothing.
      (I've got to admit I'd like to see this ported back to the 128k Speccy, since the Speccy never had a 128k version of it's own, and the game would really benefit from being able to make use of the extra RAM and the restoration of the music).

    • @arvizturotukorfurogep6235
      @arvizturotukorfurogep6235 8 лет назад +1

      Mode 1 actually could have been looked good if they do not use the Spectrum assets, rather re-draw it for Amstrad mode 1.
      The Speccy R-Type graphics was drawn with one color on every foreground object. This is all over an ubiquitus black background. This one foreground color is only changed between the 8x8 character blocks. But on the foreground structures this is further limited, the colors of the blocks are only changed vertically in order to not to interfere with the smooth pixel scrolling (the blocks on the sprites have color changes horizontally, but they also move block by block). There is occasional dithering between the color and the background for shadows. Clever for the Spectrum's limitations, but!
      Amstrad mode 1 can only use 4 colors on a single frame simultaneously (without raster tricks), still it opens up much bigger possibilities as they can be used anywhere and thus allow more detail on the objects than the 1 foreground color/8x8 block on the Spectrum.
      So I think it could have looked better if they live up with the 3 possible color/every foreground object, and nail a good palette combined with clever dithering. Other question is if the Z80 can keep it up with decent framerate. And of course if business reality does not get in the way.

    Congratulations! I'm a Commodore 64 fans and oldschool 8bit gfxman... Even I always thought that Amstrad is the worst 8bit system in 80's, I should admit that this is one of the greatest game for CPC Schneider / Amstrad. What would be next one?

    Still can't compete with the sound, graphics, gameplay and speed of the rushed C64 version released way back in 1988. In addition, the C64's play area is far larger and features super-smooth, parallax scrolling! Sorry :)

    In game music aside, this looks way worse than the ZX Spectrum version - It seems really slow and jerky. Maybe just the video or is this how it plays on real hardware?

      The R-TYPE logo on the title screen is a perfect 50Hz smooth scroll, and it absolutly not look like here, isn't it? So, imagine that is the same problem for the in game. (not perfect, but not as bad as this emulator video)

    The sprites and bullets/lasers move like they have frame skip +8. Nice use of colour but the animation ruined this port.
    Remember: animation/frame rate always better than resolution/colour/detail ;-)

      Sega Touring Car : I as well as other guys prefer graphics over animation/frame rate. prefer a game with nice graphics even if a bit slow than some shit graphics displayed at 50 fps.

    • @emmap4339
      @emmap4339 9 лет назад

      Sega Touring Car No :)
      What is important in any game is:
      1- interest = what motivates you playing it and how the game uses that lever, the challenge
      2- gameplay = manoeuvrability + reactivity = control + smoothness
      3- contrast = things on screen have to be easily differentiated, and the eyes has been shown to have 120 millions rods in each eye responsible for seeing black and white whereas each eye has 7 millions cones for watching colors, so we are hardwired for seeing better black and white
      Yes it's possible even today to make a game number one of the sales with just black and white (and shades of) used only, with a great interest and astonishingly great gameplay.
      So you're partially right only :)

    • @dlfrsilver
      @dlfrsilver 7 лет назад +1

      emmap hum well, i'm not fond at all of the games in black and white colors. To me Game in 2 or 4 colors were already prehistoric ones even back in the day when they were sold. Ok, so if i understand well, Sega Touring car is a C64 fanboy, and Emmap is a spectrum fanboy.....

    Pity about the terrible music, this is a far better port than the lack lustre original. Can live with the character based jerky scrolling since the graphics are nicely detailed and coloured, but the music is a big let down. I know the ole' AY chip cannot compete with the mighty SID, however I think a little more can be coaxed from it with some decent arranging. level 4 sounds decent, I wonder why levels 1 through 3 sound so poor.

    • @arvizturotukorfurogep6235
      @arvizturotukorfurogep6235 8 лет назад +2

      Calling it terrible is overkill.
      To me this game works better with pure, chilling tones that emphasize the epic battle (in that Japanese anime soundtrack way) rather than the cheery disco remix in the C64 version.

      Understand that C64 version had poor ingame content and worst remixed tune ever done from an arcade port... You are just a fanboy.

    •  8 лет назад +1

      Lol, you sir are a twit.... but I am sure that is not the first time you have been told that. :) The C64 version was a very lackluster port rushed out at the last moment by Manfred Trenz using his Katakis engine (which was a far better game)... I don't think it has ANY fanboys. :) If you are referring to the C64 itself, then congratulations! Your hugely deductive skills and finely tuned perception have lead you to the conclusion that the C64 was/is far more popular and has many more fans than the CPC because of its superior hardware and, in turn, far better gaming library. So, as well as being a twit, you are a super sleuth as well. How proud you must be. :)

    I'm sorry, but no... The only system that can do that is the X68000, the best 16-bit computer ever, but only released in Japan. The Amiga port of R-Type is just poor. (and can be far better, but the Amiga communoty don't make game, only run sysinfo to see the bar size and said, wahoo, I'm the best) ;)

      Sorry to have upset you ... so the game runs smoother on the hardware then ?

    • @totoonthemoon3593
      @totoonthemoon3593 9 лет назад +4

      +Alex Panchen No worry Alex. Yes it is smoother on the real hardware. For example, the title logo run at a perfect 50Hz scroll (here, it is awful). The same about the ingame amplified tearing effect, because frames are dropped into the video.
      By the way, the ingame is not as smooth as a C64 or SMS hard scroll/sprites, but the overall result enjoyed many players and reviewer for its "arcade" accuracy. Sorry if I have looked upset.

    This is just dreadful :( The scrolling and sprite movement is incredibly slow and jerky, the power-ups are disappointing and play area is so small. Apologies for all this negativity but would have expected much better from a 128K machine. The original C64 and spectrum versions are still far better than this.

    • @totoonthemoon3593
      @totoonthemoon3593 7 лет назад +5

      That is a Spectrum port in mind with the same display area and enemies patterns. The video show an emulator with frame drops... In example, the R-TYPE logo on the title screen is a perfect 50Hz smooth scroll, and it absolutly not look like here, isn't it? So, imagine that is the same problem for the in game. But OK... We have understood that you prefert your C64 port. No problem, you was probably born with it. Just understand that R-Type C64 is a good shmup but not a faithful R-Type port at all.
