Samsung 89-inch MicroLED vs 85" Mini LED TV Shootout at CES 2022 - WOW!

  • Samsung put its new 89-inch MicroLED TV vs the company's 85-inch flagship 4K Neo QLED TV in a side-by-side comparison at CES 2022. There have also been improvements to the manufacturing process and LED chip size, which will hopefully bring the sky-high price down... eventually.
    Besides 89 inches, Samsung's 2022 Micro LED TV is also available in pre-assembled sizes of 101 inches and 110 inches. The South Korean brand is continuing to position MicroLED as its highest-tier display technology ahead of QD-OLED.

      Not necessarily- oled tech is not standing still and with QD OLED we can see how closely it will match LED in brightness color volume and still to have edge in contrast. With heat sink becoming soon a standard in OLED tvs - that will also drastically decreases risk of burn in. In the end price will dictate what stays and what not - Samsung have ridiculous pricing for flagship models that trump best OLEDs. if they lower it they stand a chance otherwise there won’t be many prepared to spend that much

      Yeah honestly, it has the promise of all the benefits of other display technologies such as CRT, OLED, LCD, with none of the drawbacks, while exceeding them on just about every metric.
      Black frame insertion + slot/dotmask CRT shaders on an OLED 'would' have been a perfect way to replicate the look of those older CRT displays except for lower peak brightness & burn-in risk. Micro LED addresses all of these issues, and if it becomes the market standard, I think even the retro-gaming crowd would finally be able to concede that display tech has achieved a net progression (except post-process effects to mimic CRT introduce latency but... I'll take it).

      I don't think it will ever be cheap because you have to pay for millions of fully calibrated good quality RGB LEDs and a damn nice controller to control all of those individual LEDs to high brightness and control each sub pixel of any pixel alone for all of them.
      A way to make them a bit cheaper would be using all LEDs blue and use a quantum dot color filter which is cheaper than RGB LEDs and easier to control them since they are all the same but would also not be as good as a pure RGB microled and will still not be exactly cheap...

    I've worked on this technology, when it comes for price you should expect it to be expensive for quite some time.
    µLED diodes are made mainly with the help of Gallium Nitride material (GaN) which emits a blue light, this material can be changed a bit by injecting other chemical components like Arsenide to change the color to Green and Red (Red diodes are the hardest to make), the main problem is that the growth of Gallium Nitride material is very very slow and hard because the method used for growth is a bit complex and this material has much more physical problems or impurities than per example Silicon, trying to add another chemical element to change color only make it harder to get more efficient diodes with no problems.
    at this moment, the main way for this technology to be easily available for the public is by mcuh smaller µLED displays (smart glasses, AR tech, Military HUDs...), from what I've heard I believe Apple will be the first company to make it available trough their smartwatches with this tech, the growth method for this material needs to be developed in order to make it cheaper.

      Hello and thanks for your input. It's always nice to hear someone who was directly involved in the development. I have a few questions if you don't mind.
      1.) What's the life expectancy of the microLED diode compared to regular LED diodes used in contemporary LCD screens?
      2.) Theoretically, can the screen be used with the same quantum dot layer as a regular VA matrix can, to improve it's color gamut and viewing angles even further?
      3.) For how long will the market needs to wait before we see 65" microLED TV's at a same price as today LCD's? Do you have any approximation? My guess is probably around 15 years, because that's how long it took OLED to gain traction. What do you think?

    2. Then make all primaries with 20-bit resultion
    3. And finally transfer updates on 512-1024Hz on pixel-by-pixel manner to get rid of ancient (full frame update) frequency idea

    Linus Tech Tips had a very interesting video about Micro-LED TV'S a few months ago as he wanted to buy one and have it installed. But for very concerning reasons the company he went through suggested against it and pointed out some pretty troubling flaws that are currently present in the technology. For starters the wall where the TV is to be installed requires a "level 5" wall finish where particular grade drywall is used, then they mud and sand the wall so it achieves a tolerable level of flatness so that the panels can be installed. This is so when the modular panels are interconnected the visible seam between panels is minimized. Another issue is that the panels require color matching as there is variation that is delectable to the human eye. And because individual panels fail, you must pursue matching replacement panels.
    Now, this may not apply to large singular panels or fixed size TV'S, but the modular panels Samsung has demonstrated appear to be completely illogical at this point.

    Is this the end all of tv technology? Once it can be any size, has no heating problems, and has a cheap price, what more could a screen ever do? It has the full vision spectrum covered, including true blacks, has more brightness than is ever needed, other than the possible input lag difference from OLED for gamers... I don't see anything left to improve.

    Another downside to the tech in its current state, other than the cost, is power consumption. This thing apparently consumes an enormous amount of power, and it generates a shitload of heat. With last year's TVs, samsung was recommending dedicated circuits and a dedicated hvac system just for the display.
    We are still many years away from these being viable for a normal home it seems.

    • @ShiroiNihonjin
      @ShiroiNihonjin 2 года назад +8

      As I understand it, microLED is more efficient than other display technologies, meaning its high power consumption is merely due to being bigger and producing a higher light output in absolute terms.

    • @BasketKees
      @BasketKees 2 года назад +2

      This is correct, currently these screens draw a lot of power. Can’t find info on the modules of this year, but last years modules had a max power draw of just under 200 W (with 9 modules used in a 110” screen). One would need some serious extra cooling not to turn the lounge into a sauna when switching on the tv. So you are right that power usage is a factor in getting this technology to (mainstream) market. But it has been coming down quite quickly, the first versions of The Wall used a lot more. And by their nature, LEDs are more efficient than OLEDs, so the end result will hopefully be a lower power draw than current technology.
      These screen are not going mainstream anytime soon though and not just because of power draw. Pixel size and manufacturing are major hurdles yet to be tackled. By the time microLED is ready for market 8k will be the norm while currently 89” is the smallest we can make a 4k screen. 4k microLED at 55” will take a while, let alone 8k. And there will need to be a new way of producing microLED screens. Picking up each single LED from the silicon wafer and placing it on the screen substrate will never be able to compete with the way OLEDs are printed. Something new will have to be invented. OLED will have plenty more time to shine, I don’t see microLED going mainstream before the end of the decade. It is something nice to look forward to though.

    Looks like the perfect TV screen. Need to get the sizes and price down to reasonable levels though. Is there a reason they are so big? Is making smaller screens a problem with this tech at the moment? Or is it because it is the only way to recoup the R&D?

    • @Erowens98
      @Erowens98 2 года назад

      Making them smaller is a problem. It's very difficult to make LEDs that small and then place them all accurately into the correct positions without damaging them in the process. The higher pixel density, the harder it is.
      That's why they're all modular at the moment. If a panel is 4 1080p panels glued together. Then if 1 of the 4 panels has a manufacturing defect, it won't ruin the entire panel, just that one quarter panel module.

    • @GAMExLOGIC_
      @GAMExLOGIC_ 2 года назад

      They could make a smaller 89" version, because they were able to shrink the individual leds. At the moment this is the smallest they can make the leds. Smaller leds will cause more defects and have higher costs to produce.

    Not a fair comparison as I found out there is a problem with the 85 inch qn90a, check the owners avforums, some people are saying theirs is very dim and washed out in dark areas in HDR looks night and day difference between hdr and sdr, could be a bug in software but something is definitely wrong. As both have about 1500-2000 nits peak and about 800 nits full field. Something doesn't add up here....
