I saw this link after I watched the version with music. At first I kept wondering where the music was coming from & figured out it was your video. The music was very distracting, so I turned it waaaay down to try & keep from hearing it, so I am hoping you've done the same with your other videos. This is the 1st one I've seen from you & I look forward to making a rag rug!! Thank you for sharing your skills! :)
Thank you! I agree on the music, however this was one of the first videos I ever created, over 3 years ago. I'm happy to say I have learned a lot since then. Have a wonderful weekend. I'm glad you stopped by! 💞
This reminded me of a time when my Mother taught me to crochet. We both made these gorgeous octagon popcorn stitch rugs. So much fun. She passed a few months ago and as I was watching this I thought of that time and how lucky I was and how I miss those days and time spent together.
Oh, Michelle. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. I'm glad that you will always have such sweet memories to carry you through. They will help wash the tears from your heart. 💕 Blessings!
About 25 years ago I crocheted an apple shaped rug using cream sheets and red strips for the skin. I added green leaves and some black seeds. This was a wedding gift for a friend planning to use an apple theme in her kitchen. She liked it so much she used it as a wall hanging instead of a floor rug. 🍎
@@Lavenderrose73 actually by changing from single crochet to half, double or treble crochet in various areas of each row you can manipulate the shape easily. 🍎
@@24carrotgold8 my mother has crocheted for years, and I'm sure she still does. She tried to show me how, but I just couldn't grasp it. So I just went to needlepoint and other things. I enjoyed the needlecraft class I took in high school, and had even gotten full credit on a macrame plant holder we had made.
In Spain, after the civil war (of 1936/1939) there was not much money, so they used the old sheets to make strips and with them they were used as bandages in case you fell or hurt yourself. Almost all the clothes were reused, luckily my mother learned to sew dress clothes and we were always groomed both to go to school and to go for a walk. Old times that I would not like to repeat. I have learned to sew with a machine and by hand, and lately I am restoring clothes that were tight, etc. I have been retired for a long time and that is a way to reuse what I have at home, it is very entertaining. Good video, greetings from Barcelona-Spain.
Aww! I love that you shared this with me! For just 1 day it would be nice to go back in time. I think we would learn so much! My mom (76), recently gifted me a blanket that her mom made from many of the old clothes that belonged to my mom and her siblings...a total of 15 children! It was weaved together using strips of fabric, torn from worn out pants, dresses, tops, coats, and the like. Remarkably, it's still in great shape, and it's very heavy. I love the old ways! Have a beautiful day! 😊
Years ago (at least as early as 1900) when flour was put in white sacks, women made clothes from them when empty.. It was 100% cotton and some clothes are still as sturdy today. ( I find them at estate sales). Then they began putting flower in pretty designed material because the women used it so much. May quilts and dresses were made from flowered sacks. Waste not want not. :-)
I grew up in UK….our nanny….used to make …NÉ England term…clippy rugs….all old woolen clothes…I used to help cutting pieces at five…it was done on a frame…..with a hook tool…..sewing was normal for us….when hit not so good times….find expensive fabric cheap….make clothes…..
Sewing is a great tool to know. My husband and I made sure that our 3 sons grew up knowing 2 things really well...how to cook and how to sew. They never thought sewing would ever come in handy. Our 2 oldest went into the army. Sewing came in very handy! Our oldest even made money Sewing for the other soldiers who never learned. 😉
My grandma loved this kind of stuff. I have sheets I saved from when she passed and a tub of her clothes. Been wanting to make something for my aunts and uncles and siblings out of it all.
This reminds me of wonderful memories of my grandma and our special times together learning skills that are shared less and less these days. I’m trying hard to pass some of the things I’ve learned where cooking traditional family heritage foods, carding wool & spinning yarn, fishing techniques and simple hand made fishing gear, gardening including grafting. I taught my younger sister to sew and we took our grandma’s clothing after she passed to make patchwork quilts for 4 much younger half siblings, my dad’s next batch of kids ;) along with a poem to tell them a story of memories of our grandma that they were not able to know and enjoy as I did. Talk about Christmas tears by every sibling, my sister and I as well as my dad!
This looks like a great gift for a family member after a loved one has passed, using their sheets. They can always feel that person's presence in their home.
@@serenakoleno9338 when my father in law passed...one of his grand daughters took all his shirts and had us a teddy bear made out of them...with moveable arms and legs so it can sit on a shelf right beside his picture
Seeing your cotton strips reminds of the times when I was young my mother would curl my hair using strips of white cotton. They were so easy to sleep on!
Oh my gosh! You just brought back a memory I haven't thought of in YEARS! I had a cousin that I was very close to, while growing up. We were like sisters. ALWAYS together. Her mom used to put our hair up in rag curls, too. We loved it! Thank you for uncovering this wonder memory from the back of my mind, Marion. Blessings to you! 🙏
Loved the video. This was the 1st thing my grandma (who raised me) taught me to make. I was so excited to have actually made something that contributed to the family. These skills are fading in our society, so thank you for bringing it back to light.
@@jackiepearson2779 she uses the most basic stitch. You could learn everything you need in a RUclips video. WalMart sells the giant crochet hooks. Very easy ti learn.
I used flat sheets to sew my husband boxers shorts. I sew myself sleeveless cool house dresses with pockets in front. That way I stay cool in the tropics, easy to wash, dry quick on the line.
BTW, I LOVE the ‘Keeper Of My Home’ tag line. Made me get misty eyed and miss my mother. I felt all the love you mean when I read it. What a wonderful sentiment and privilege to be a proud keeper of a home where your beloveds live. 💗
@@adevore1971 It's never to late to learn! Crochet is easy once you get the hang of it. It's really just a multiple of simple stitches and their placement. Best of luck! Hopefully you try it and end up "hooked"!!! Have a good day!
@@AFineLineA thank you.. my mom did teach me to crochet and knit and sew.. crocheting is supposedly easier but I need to relearn! Many other aspects of homemaking, like cooking, I wasn't taught and the idea of "just" being a housewife would have made my mom cringe! But I wish that idea was even a consideration as I was growing up.. both parents worked fulltime jobs and not out of necessity.. oh well, so they weren't perfect..I still had it pretty good! At 50 yrs old I certainly shouldn't be blaming my parents! Lol
@@adevore1971 Totally understandable! Thing is with learning it is never too late if it is truly something one wants to learn or relearn. Much easier if you already had the skills. It comes back to you. I am very grateful for my parents I learned so much from both. But crochet was not one of them. Self taught on that one. It is quicker even though knitting is finer. Your account of your parents is not really blaming it is stating a fact of life. But hopefully you will give crochet a try again and find being a bit older gives a different reason and perspective for doing something. Hopefully you will fully enjoy it, as well! Best of luck to you in giving it a shot! :). Have a good night!
The joining method is interesting, haven't seen this before. Another possibility: if you do not completely separate the stripes but stop the tearing 2 inches before each end, you can just make another cut and tear in the other direction. This will create an endless stripe right from the beginning and you can skip forward to the fun crochet part ;)
I love this~! I have some from my grandmother and her sisters...my grandmother would be about 114 yrs old, so I have had thee about 50 yrs. We have hot pads, chair pads as well as rugs. They didn't use sheets but they all owned blouse mills so the extra binding was put to use in this way. Thank you for encouraging the younger generation to repurpose and not waste. :-)
Your mom sounds like a very smart woman. Thank you for sharing this! Hawaii!! Oh, to be in warmer weather. My husband and I live in Northern Maine. It's currently 25* out. 😱 Thank you for the visit! I hope you consider subscribing. This is one of the very first videos I ever made. I'd love for you to see my more recent ones. Blessings Nancy!
I'm seeing an excellent weighted blanket in that "rug". My son loves a heavy blanket, I think I'll take your idea and size it for that and sandwich it in with the other covers. I think it will create a warming air cushion that way like a thermal blanket does. Very nice. Now I've got to learn how to crochet, lol. Thank you.
Thank you for this amazing lesson in reusing and preserving what we have. You have shown us that there is more to do with old sheets/fabric than just making rags.
I dye the sheets so I can get the color combinations I want for the room I will be using it in---I also use my quilting cutting mat and rolling blade cutter to cut the strips. You did a fantastic job of showing how it is done and encouraging others to recycle and get a beautiful useful rug for the home.
I remember the first time I saw my mother rip some fabric for a project... I was very young and she told me it was the surest way to get a straight line each time. Super fast too.

Love re-purposing items that would normally end in trash Thank you for reminding us we all have a “ purpose!” and sharing the discovery of our is an adventure!! Blessings! Enjoyed your video
This did inspire me to rip up a couple of sheets! I went shopping and got a Q sized hook and went to town. However I decided to make an oval rug…I have always loved the look of oval rugs! I’m not quite finished but it is a winner for sure! Thank you for my next obsession! 🤣♥️👍🙏🇺🇸
Omg I have admired this type of rugs and I had no idea how to make my own.. the one you did in this video is absolutely beautiful. You’re an inspiration to me. God Bless you fellow momma and mamaw
Old sheets cut into two inch strips in the same manner as this video are used on my farm and tied ten feet apart on fencing wire. It helps the critters, especially the deer see the fencing wire and protects them from injury of running into the wire and helps me with less broken wire to repair every spring. My neighbor is Amish and uses barbed wire which can do a lot of damage to deer. His wire is strung high, chin level of his work horses. The cloth strips allow the deer to judge the height of the wire so they can run under it. Thank you for video, very nice presentation.
I just found your channel and had to subscribe from this video alone. I grew up in a very rural area in the US, we were quite poor and there were a lot of us. I remember doing these with my Grandmother and mother. It was always so much fun. The kids loved ripping the sheets up and removing the excess threads, the adults and older kids would snip the ends and Mom and Gram would roll the balls up. I was the only one of the kids interested in crochet so I got to hang with the adults and crochet these rugs up...it was one of my favorite times. Gram (and Gramp) died In a car accident when I was 11. And my Mom died 21 years ago. I had not thought of these rag rugs in years. I now live in Scotland, and I have a cupboard of sheets and duvet covers (they do not use a top and bottom sheet over here). I could not throw them away, have used a few as dust covers for painting, but was wondering what to do with them besides selling them to the rag man...and I think this is the project! Thank you for bringing back so many wonderful memories for me! And thank you for sharing! 💖
Shelley I loved hearing your story! It touched my heart! Thank you for sharing it with me! I'm very sorry for your losses. The wonderful memories you have are like ((HUGS)) from heaven 🤗 They will hold you throughout your life. Welcome to my family of keepers! 💞
I make braided rag rugs from old t-shirts. There are no strings when you use knit fabric. Thank you for the idea to crochet rugs out of old sheets. I hate to throw anything away and have old sheets that need to be used. Wonderful!
I am a person who has to stay busy even if I am watching TV, so I always have my rug project to work on. I have developed a methods of cutting the T-shirts into strips along the grain and even take out the stitches in the hem then roll the strips into balls. I separate the balls into cool or warm colors or just do all colors. Then I braid the pieces together like you would if you were making a basket using three large, strong safety pins. The only place there is stitching is when the rug is completed and I stitch the final ends down on the back. These rugs last for years because they never come apart.
this video has been so informative and an inspiration that has motivated me to finally do something that RUclips has shown me. Thank you. In the morning I will ask all my family to give me the sheets they do not use. I have subscribed to your channel today
Thank you Azorean! You are very kind! I hope you find lots of sheets, because I promise, you are going to be hooked! Welcome to my family of keepers! 💞
This is fabulous! I love how you encourage us to “use what we have & not waste- like those before us” while making such beautiful & useful items for our homes, family, friends, etc.! Thank you🦩
Thank you! I crocheted when I was younger. I can't wait to try this out! I have a lot of sheets here that I wouldn't part with, now you gave me a great idea. Many thanks to you! As for how long it takes, it doesn't matter, this will be a great cold weather project! 👏👍
I made rag rugs under my kitchen table and front door. I did the same thing. Cool. Glad to see other families making the same things. THANK YOU. You can add any time. It doesn't matter. This is the very FIRST TIME MEETING YOU. I MADE A BALL WITH MINE STRIPES. TAKES MORE PREP TIME. L.O.L. I EVEN MADE FLOWER POT COVERS, PURSE'S SMALL ONE'S. LARGER BAGS FOR GARDEN BAGS, ETC. HAVE FUN. I love your video. I'm definitely going to try this after my current projects. The prep work in creativity is so very calming, quite meditational, and a brilliant way to help manage anxiety and other mental health difficulties we might have. It helps us to just sit and breathe, yet we're creating something constructive. Thank you so much for posting 🪄🌻💫
I loved your video and your calmness. I have to try this. I have a stack of sheets that I was donating, out from donation pile they come. I'm pretty boring in my sheets, so I'll need to go to Goodwill to get some floral ones! Thanks for the inspiration. I have made rag rugs in the past, but not crocheted. I do crochet, this will be fun!
Thank you! That's so great...and just in time for the holidays! I will be creating a similar video soon, involving crocheting, so stay tuned! Have a wonderful weekend! 💞
Thank you!! They sure do! It's so easy to make your own, though! I'm in the process of teaching our 8 yr. old granddaughter how to crochet. She has plans to make a rug for her room. I have no doubt she will! Thank you for watching! 💞
I have made many rag rugs for my home, and everyone who sees them are amazed that they were made from old sheets. I have a huge one in my utility room, and made them for my bathrooms. They wash easily and are so soft underfoot, and are very easy to make.
That's so great! I love hearing this! I think everyone should have these in their homes. There is no rug as cozy, soft, or as original as the one you can make yourself! 😉 Thank you for sharing this with me! 💞
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome Julie, I totally agree with you. The tearing of the sheets/pillowcases is very therapeutic, as is the crocheting. A number of people have asked me to teach them how to do this, and I refer them to You Tube. Your rug looked lovely. I love the colours.
I have just had this video recommended, and I’ve subscribed. Thank you. Lovely to watch your video teaching others how to recycle things into useful items. This old great-grandmother watched my mother, grandmothers and aunties doing these things after WWII and have done so myself. Of course, there was always the soap making, candles, and pickles, jams, preserves and cordials too. I’m a Scot living in Australia and the “old things” are becoming popular as we all stay home in this pandemic, not just we oldies are homebodies now! I make both crocheted and braided rugs with fabric as you show here. I’ve made thick ones from plastic bags (shopping and bread bags) for out on the back verandah and in the laundry. I made some great rugs out of stockings and pantyhose for the bathroom. They can be used as bath mats. They’re soft, easily washed, and dry very quickly.
Hi Julie! I’m new here. Love your tutorial on preparing the strips of sheets. Now for me to find out how to crochet! Yikes. But the idea of making gifts was so appealing. So I’m going to give it a concentrated effort. Good job getting us started. Looking forward to your future vlogs. I’m 71 this month on the 26th. I always sign off Grandma Debbie 😊 Blessings and joy to you!
Ohhhhh my goodness, you have the patience of a saint doing all that preparation!! I just don’t have that patience, give me the ball and the crochet hook and I’d happily make the rug, which looks fantastic! Not even the box with the strips would be enough for me.
Lol! Thank you! 😊 I hope you stay for a while, and enjoy some of my newer videos. This is one of the first I ever made....3 years old. If you enjoy my content, please consider subscribing. Have a wonderful day! 😊
My garden is done so now I need something to keep me busy. I think this sounds like a fun hobby to try. I do crochet but I get bored with it because it is a slow process for me. This would be faster and I love colors so I would go nuts adding colors. I'm glad I found you. :)
We had a newspaper that was delivered to our door in a blue bag...I saved the bag...added other shopping bags to it...looped them thru the handles and crocheted a long chain. Then, I took fabric strips from my quilting stash and built a wrapped basket using the chain as the core...and not only used the bags up but many fabrics that had been sitting around for a while. The baskets ended up in closets to hold shoes...and an occasional cat. Thank you for your instructive video!
What a quaint idea. How big is the crochet needle it looked like a electric toothbrush size. I use to make strips from sheets and big squares to sew quilts. Never thought to crochet them. I will give it a try. For Michelle, sorry for your lost. One bible truth you may not be aware of is that there will be a resurrection of our dead love ones back to life here on the earth. Job 14:14,15; Isa. 26:19;John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15. Death is a enemy to mankind but by means of Jesus' ransom sacrifice the way open up for us to gain everlasting life as God intended with no thought of death in the picture. Soon Revelation 21:4 will be fulfilled no more tears of mourning, pain and no more death. Yay! Let your Kingdom Come! keep praying for the benefits of God's Kingdom. A campaign is happening this month with a issue of a bible based magazine entitle A Better World is Near. Look for it get a free copy and read it. So many wonderful things ahead. May Jehovah continue to comfort and heal your broken heart until that promise is fulfilled (Ps. 147:3; Isa. 57:15.)
Thank you! What a great idea! I'd love for you to watch some of my other videos, too! If you enjoy my content, subscribe and share! Have a beautiful Sunday! 😊
This is cool! I remember my great grandmother teaching me to crotche! I never new what to do with just a chain but I think as a kid I just loved listening to her stories! Thanks for bringing back that memory and the idea! You are awesome!
I know this was produced four years ago but it's quite new to me, thank you for making this tutorial. I've just leaned a great easy method for making rag rugs. I look forward to watching more of your videos on your channel.
i love this ! I've been crocheting/making t-shirt rugs for years, and have had problems with them coming apart where different strips are knotted (i know, terrible technique!) together. this way of connecting strips is GENIUS! thank you for making this video. i know what i'll be doing on the long, cold, winter nights coming up - it helps with seasonal depression.
Great way to reuse/recycle. I noticed that when you were cutting the 2 inch strips you piled all 5 sheets worth of strips together. I think I’ll place each sheet’s cut strips into separated piles as I cut each sheet separately. That’s just me thinking it would help me save time.
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome I was thinking the same thing, I read the book "Cheaper by the Dozen" so many times as a kid and watched the original movie multiple times, the parents were motion study experts, and I try and do things that save time, so I was thinking while watching, to handle each strip once, or as few times as possible, cut all the edges like you did, turn under the first side to make your cut for the joining slits, scissors are still in your hands, then tear the strips, cleaning off the shreds, then placing them in the piles you desire, but in straight lines, with the uncut slit strips, all at the same end, then they are ready to be cut for the joining slits. Now, you can join them, but lay them back and forth in a long narrow box, then they are ready to be crocheted. Think shoe box, just longer, they shouldn't get tangled, so no rolling into a ball....❤😘
This was awesome.......love the idea and the reuse. I wish I had seen this a year ago when I purged all my old sheets and repurposed them and handed some down that were barely used. I shall keep this on my next list of to do things when I find that our sheets need rotated to new ones! Blessings
Are used to crochet a lot but since I have arthritis in my hands I can’t work with the finer threads and smaller needles because my hands hurt but I can make a rag rug and I know it thank you so much for showing me how to wrap up my old sheets that’s rip thank you keep up the good work
Now I want to learn to crochet. I think these would make awesome mats for my cats. We have a messy mix of blankets, towels, and mats all over the apartment for the cats, and the mats and blankets are a pain on laundry day because they have to be hung up to dry. I think that replacing all of them with these would be great. I can buy sheets super cheap at the thrift store up the street. And even if the colours of the mats don't match, the size and style will. Plus, since they're made of sheets, they can be thrown in the dryer. I think they cats will like them. They'll be soft and cushiony, and in the summer, I think that the material and the construction will help to keep them cool.
Ok, I love your blog! When you were in crocheting, I had this urge to go grab a tea and start my next project! I think I will make mine into a blanket for my son as well....that was a FANTASTIC idea! Thank you!❣
Thank you so very much, Julie !! This is so inspiring and re-instills the love of home back into my soul... I am for sure going to try this and look forward to your other videos... Wishing you all the best... 💐
Wow, thanks for the inspiration! My Grandmothers were both seamstresses. One worked in a factory and the other worked for individuals. Times have changed, but I think we're getting back to those times again. Grandma taught me a couple different ways to make scrap rugs. The way I have done it in the past was with a loom and small strips of fabric, then you sewn them in your square, rectangular or round. Lots of fun, thanks again for the inspiration. I'm surprised this is the first I've seen you. Love from Indy! 🙋♀️❤👏👏😊
Thank YOU for finding me! My aunt was a wonderful seamstress, while I was growing up. She started out by drawing patterns on old newspapers and creating clothes for her siblings out of hand me downs. There were 15 children in my mother's family, so she got lots of practice! I love the idea of working on a loom. Something I always wanted to learn. If you enjoy my content, please consider subscribing! Have a wonderful evening! 😊
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome Wow, big family. What a blessing. I can remember Grandma taking favorite clothes apart and making patterns on newspaper also. Doll clothes, Barbie clothes, and for me too. My mother made collared shirts for my three older brothers, but they refused when it came to their JC Penney Jean's, right? Dresses were worn back then for the ladies, and beautiful works of art. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. I'm trying to get my sewing room set back up, I'll let you know how it goes. 😊 I've only been watching RUclips for about a year now, so this is all new to me. I love it and from canning to sewing and crafts, I just love it. Thanks again, and I'll make sure that I keep watching! Oh, and my one Grandma was from the Ozarks, great memories of her farm. Thanks from Indy, Teri 🙋♀️❤👏👏😊

Thank you! Crocheting is very easy to learn. There are lots of great videos that show, in detail, how to do it. I can also knit, but much prefer to crochet. Its easier and faster. Best of luck to you. I know you will really enjoy your rug. ❤
Absolutely amazing. A great fall activity. Those colours are perfect for a young girls room. Thanks. You’re right, the prep time & work is harder than the crocheting. Very nice. 👍
My mom and grandma used to call these 'rag rugs'. It looks so fluffy that I'll bet you could even make a nice, fat, lap blanket too. And if you only had a couple sheets you could just make a small rug to put in front of the kitchen sink, etc. Thank you for your video. Very nice!
My best friends mom used to make rag rugs out of plastic grocery bags and old tshirts I love them they last a very long time too ill be trying this with old sheets for sure great idea
For new crocheters, especially show the end of each row more closely how you finish the last crochet then rotate and start new row, so the rug stays square/straight.
My grandmother and mother taught me how to crochet with a homemade crochet hook made from a screwdriver. I made two oval rugs. I don’t know what happened to the hook. We used the rugs and mom would just through them in the wash and they would come out just like new. We used old fabric and old clothes to make the fabric strips. I will use your attachment trick to join the strips. We did not attach them like you do. I will do my old sheets that way to get them out from the linen closet. Again thank you.
What a lovely memory! Those are the best kinds! 💞 I hope you do make the rug, and that it brings you as much comfort as your wonderful memories do. Thank you so much for watching! 😊
In the old days ingenuity, creativity and thinking outside the box meant you could still accomplish what you needed or wanted to do. Thank God for all the lessons in tenacity along with the rest above in making things work. Bet your Grandparents were very interesting people! :)
I just watched your video which I randomly stumbled across. I love this project. The time and effort to start and finish don't seem bothersome to me at all as I am appreciating the process more and more as I enjoy retirement from my nursing career. I will definitely plan to make a rag rug like you demonstrated. I am already excited to make chair pads for my kitchen table and chairs. I will happily share my work when I am finished. I think I need to learn to crochet now! What a great way to upcycle old or mismatched sheets that we have laying around! So glad to find this older video of yours after loving so many of the more recent ones. Thank you Julie!
Thank you for the video Julie - glad I came across it by accident, what a great idea to recycle old sheets. I am already excited to start on a project!
Ooh! Thank you!! Another great idea! One of the many reasons I love the community I have found here on RUclips. If you enjoy my content please consider subscribing, and joining my family of keepers! 💞
I love this idea for the use of old sheets. I was given a trivet for hot pans to sit on the table it is made this way but she used a rope type to use.it works but I think this would be so much better then the rope one. But it was a gift and she made it special for me. You now have mind in motion thinking of all the possibilities. Thanks
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome It works well, it must be a curtain of lace that does not fray and made of synthetic material. I use it to wash the tub and the sink. I crochet a fairly tight square, easier to make than circles.
I repurposed some jersey knit sheets for a knitted project like this. So soft and people are always complimenting it. And impressed that I made it myself. Freehand, no patterns. When I let the creativity flow it always comes out great!
Wonderful!! I'm cleaning out my closet currently and have several old sheets that would be perfect for repurposing as a rug....not like I need anymore projects...but this looks like so much fun! Thanks.
A great way to reuse cotton poly sheets or duvet covers. Dye the sheets first if all you have is white, that way you can make any colour. Lovely tutorial, thank you.
THANK YOU...looking forward to other Videos from you. I LOVE MAINE...my husband and I spent many vacations in 5 Islands for YEARS. We almost purchased a summer home there. He passed 2020 and NOTHING. NOWHERE is the same.
I'm so sorry, Aria! I know how things change after the loss of a husband. I saw it happen in my mom's life when my dad passed away in 2012. I will pray for you, and if you are ever find yourself in our neck of the woods of Maine, look us up. 💞
I love this, Julie! This reminds me of what my grandmother did with scraps of fabric from when I used to sew my own clothes. I wonder if this could be used as a quilt or a throw... it seems like it would make a nice weighted blanket. Thank you for this!
Thank you, Audrey! I think it would make a lovely blanket, or throw! I love that you can customize the colors. It's so fun to see the design those colors make when finished. Thank you for stopping by! ❤
I'm thinking I could make a small throw or even a blanket if I had enough strips. It's bound to be warm and you wouldn't have to put it on the floor. Diane
You certainly won't be disappointed, no matter what you make. I have even cut my fabric into 1/4" strips, and made small coasters, and candle mats. Those work up very fast, and make wonderful gifts. The holidays are coming fast! 😉
I'm a new subscriber and I'm stunned. I always used my old sheets for drop cloths when I paint and I'm literally disgusted I didn't keep them and make something like this. Now I know.
Thank you! Using them for drop cloths is a great idea, though. I know you will enjoy the rug as well, if you decide to make one, and your feet will LOVE YOU! Welcome to my family of keepers! 💞
Thank you for sharing this. Looks terrific. Don't know how to crochet so may not end up doing this, but at least I know it is a possibility. The rug looks beautiful!
Pam, single crochet is very easy to learn. I taught myself from a book. Look at Naztazia’s videos for instructions. And Unique Stitch Designs videos, really good.
I don't know how to crochet but maybe one could make long strips, bunch several together into three thicker strands and braid them? Then sew them together?
Thank you so much Julie, I really really enjoyed watching you create this amazing rug from sheets, that you don’t use anymore. I think 🤔 it’s really really awesome, and I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up 👍 too. Please stay safe and well too
Your home makes me feel so welcomed. I can’t wait to make some of these as gifts. I have a hard time thinking outside the box and this is the proof. I’ve crocheted for 40 years and never thought of this. Lol. Thank you so much for the video and the feeling of home. 👍🏼🤍
Perfect! I am so glad you enjoyed this video! These are so fun to make, and they crochet up so quickly. Your feet and your new rug will be best friends! 💕
Your title brought me to watch the video. I collect thrift store sheets, too, and am always on the lookout for things to make. I made my granddaughters a bedtime set for their American Girl dolls one Christmas. I bought a bunk bed for the dolls and made all the bedding and pillows. Then, I made nightgowns for the dolls to match. All it cost was the very reasonable price of the bunk bed. I will have to make a rug, now! Love your video and have subbed!

What a nice gift! 💞
I would also use it as a wall hanging. Sounds like a lot of work went into making that apple-shaped rug.
I imagine doing something other than round or circle, especially like an apple, would be very difficult to crochet.
At the thrift store I see all kinds of sheets! Now you have my creative juices flowing!
🤗💞
Hola desde Mallorca!
What a great, and very thoughtful idea! 💞
Me to! 😍
Wow 🤩
Remember Beth in Little Women making bandages
Thank you! What a thoughtful idea! 💞

That's a sweet comment. I wish I were raised to be more of a homemaker.. still learning (I'm 50 lol)
Thank you! 😊

Thank you! We do the same on our cow fence. No barbed wire, though. Have a wonderful day! 😊

Great way to reuse/recycle. I noticed that when you were cutting the 2 inch strips you piled all 5 sheets worth of strips together. I think I’ll place each sheet’s cut strips into separated piles as I cut each sheet separately. That’s just me thinking it would help me save time.
Absolutely! Thank you for sharing a great tip! Have a beautiful day! 😊
Thank you Sylvia! This is great advice! 🤗

They will definitely love them! 😊
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome I'm excited about getting started!! I used to crochet years ago, so I'm sure I'll pick it up again fairly quickly.
Thank you! I think you will, too. 😉🤗
Ok, I love your blog! When you were in crocheting, I had this urge to go grab a tea and start my next project!
I think I will make mine into a blanket for my son as well....that was a FANTASTIC idea!
Thank you!❣
Thank you so much! ❤
Thank you so very much, Julie !! This is so inspiring and re-instills the love of home back into my soul... I am for sure going to try this and look forward to your other videos... Wishing you all the best... 💐
Love your joining non-sew method. I have crochetted rugs that my mother did 55 years ago. We still use them in the downstairs bathroom.
They last so long! 😊
I loved this. My grandmother taught me how to hook a rug.I had forgotten, I'm going to try this.
Thanks from Indy, Teri
🙋♀️❤👏👏😊
I just love hearing these kinds of stories! I could chat with you all night! We would make wonderful neighbors. 😊 Thank you so much for finding my channel. I hope we have many more chances to share "way back when". Blessings to you!
I love the way you teach. So easy to understand. Now I have to learn to crochet because I really want to make these rugs. Thank you!
Very nice. 👍
Thank you, Annette 💞
I made outdoor rugs like that only using plastic bag strips. Love the sheet idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! 😊
I have lots of sheets that I don't want to throw away, this gives me an idea. Thank you
My mom and grandma used to call these 'rag rugs'. It looks so fluffy that I'll bet you could even make a nice, fat, lap blanket too. And if you only had a couple sheets you could just make a small rug to put in front of the kitchen sink, etc. Thank you for your video. Very nice!
Thank you, Willow! I appreciate your kindness! Have a wonderful evening! 😊
My best friends mom used to make rag rugs out of plastic grocery bags and old tshirts I love them they last a very long time too ill be trying this with old sheets for sure great idea
Thank you, Rhonda! They do last! Such a great project!
For new crocheters, especially show the end of each row more closely how you finish the last crochet then rotate and start new row, so the rug stays square/straight.
looks like Julie was doing single crochets so my guess is chain 1 and turn...keep going in sc..?
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome Great attaching tip, thank you!!!
Thank you! 😊
In the old days ingenuity, creativity and thinking outside the box meant you could still accomplish what you needed or wanted to do. Thank God for all the lessons in tenacity along with the rest above in making things work. Bet your Grandparents were very interesting people! :)
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome You are very welcome!
Thank you so much for this creative inspiration.💝
Thank you, Brenda! Congratulations on your retirement, and thank you for your service in health care! 🙏 I appreciate YOU!
This project was a lot of fun, and SO relaxing! I would love to see your finished projects. My email is in the description box below my video. Have a wonderful day! 💞
I think I need to learn to crochet now! What a great way to upcycle old or mismatched sheets that we have laying around! So glad to find this older video of yours after loving so many of the more recent ones. Thank you Julie!
Aww! Thank you! 😊
Thank you for the video Julie - glad I came across it by accident, what a great idea to recycle old sheets. I am already excited to start on a project!
I've always wanted to know how to make those rugs - Thank You for showing me!
Thank YOU for taking the time to watch! Have a wonderful day 😊
Very nice idea! My grandfather used to make braided rugs out of plastic bread wrappers.
Ooh! Thank you!! Another great idea! One of the many reasons I love the community I have found here on RUclips. If you enjoy my content please consider subscribing, and joining my family of keepers! 💞
I like the concept, however I think I would do a hook rug. Thank you for sharing.
Hooked rugs are great, too! Thank you for stopping by! ❤
Thank you for the great idea to make rugs, I have used old sheets for tying my tomatoe plants to stakes.
You're welcome! 😉
A friend used his old undies, fruit of the loom elastic, white fabric all over beans and tomatoes
Wow! Great idea and I love the way you join the strips! I see rag rug project in my future!
Thank you! Your feet will love you! 😉
This looks awesome. I love home crafts and making things myself. Thanx for showing us this. I cant wait to do some
I use sheets on the beach! Folds easily, cooling, dry fast and saves your towel for drying
Great idea! Thank you for sharing and watching! Have a wonderful weekend! 😊
Can applique design too or name or whatever
Smart! I’ll bet the sand doesn’t stick as much as other materials
Put a pretty sheet across thee backseat of car.
seen that somewhere..fitted sheet with pool noodles on all sides to use as a playing area for the baby.
I love this idea for the use of old sheets. I was given a trivet for hot pans to sit on the table it is made this way but she used a rope type to use.it works but I think this would be so much better then the rope one. But it was a gift and she made it special for me. You now have mind in motion thinking of all the possibilities. Thanks
You're welcome! 😉
Thank you, all I need is the Q hook. Recycling my old sheets into a rug. Repurposing, amazing.
Thank you!
Using some old fairly stiff lace curtain, I cut into 2 inch strips and crocheted some scrubbies pads.
What an awesome idea! I'd love to hear how they work. Thank you for sharing!
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome It works well, it must be a curtain of lace that does not fray and made of synthetic material. I use it to wash the tub and the sink. I crochet a fairly tight square, easier to make than circles.
I really love this idea. So clever!
Thanks.
Thank you! Happy crocheting! 💞
A great way to reuse cotton poly sheets or duvet covers. Dye the sheets first if all you have is white, that way you can make any colour.
Lovely tutorial, thank you.
Thank you, Lynne! 💞
THANK YOU...looking forward to other Videos from you. I LOVE MAINE...my husband and I
spent many vacations in 5 Islands for YEARS.
Thank you
I love this, Julie!
Where can you get the big crochet hook lovely work Audrey.
Amazon carries them. We live in a very small area, so there are no big stores that would carry one. You want a size Q hook. Have fun! 😊
Love these beautiful responses!
Pretty rough for a blanket. Maybe for a pet
WOW!!! this is sooo amazing
I love it such a great idea for unused sheets/material.
I am definitely going to try this out🙂
Thank you! 🤗
Oh my🤔😁😁 I have a huge bag of material... Whoo hoo. Thank you all for the inspiration.
You're welcome! 😉
That is so pretty! I would have a hard time putting it on my floor. I love those colors together.
Thank you! It feels SO GOOD on your feet, though. 🤗
Beautiful end result! BUT, clearly you have a kind heart. It came through the video. Many blessings. 💞
Thank you! Your kind words mean a lot to me. ❤
Thank you, Pam! Have a wonderful weekend! 😊
Pam, single crochet is very easy to learn. I taught myself from a book. Look at Naztazia’s videos for instructions. And Unique Stitch Designs videos, really good.
Yes, it is. I learned it in the 3rd grade from a wonderful and very patient teacher. 😉
Learn to crochet. It's easy😁❤
I don't know how to crochet but maybe one could make long strips, bunch several together into three thicker strands and braid them? Then sew them together?
I love this ❤ I'm going to attempt to make one as a project with my kindergartener!
Thank you! What a fun time! I wish we could share pictures. 😔 have a great time! 💞
Thank you so much Julie, I really really enjoyed watching you create this amazing rug from sheets, that you don’t use anymore. I think 🤔 it’s really really awesome, and I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up 👍 too. Please stay safe and well too
Thank you, Mags! Welcome to my family of keepers! I'd love it if you share my channel with your friends. Have a wonderful day! 💞
I forgot how to make these rugs. Thank you so much for sharing. I can’t wait to finally make a rug next to my bed.
Your home makes me feel so welcomed. I can’t wait to make some of these as gifts. I have a hard time thinking outside the box and this is the proof. I’ve crocheted for 40 years and never thought of this. Lol. Thank you so much for the video and the feeling of home. 👍🏼🤍
Thank you so much! ❤
This would make a great “market tote” for a reusable grocery bag! …perhaps a slightly narrower strip and smaller crochet hook!
Sounds like a very smart idea! 💖
I would love to learn how to do this it seems absolutely meditative
Thank you so much for this tutorial! VERY clear and simple instructions (already know how to crochet).
Perfect! I am so glad you enjoyed this video! These are so fun to make, and they crochet up so quickly. Your feet and your new rug will be best friends! 💕
Gorgeous…. Thanks you I have a ton of 70’s sheets inherited from grandmas
Thank you so much! I love your story! Your granddaughters are very blessed! Welcome to my family of keepers! 💞
