These rugs can be a wonderful memorial for someone too. My great great grandma made 2 area rugs out of her husband’s clothes after he passed. She had two children so each got one. They’ve been passed down and fast forward to today, I have a beautiful rug that reminds me of a long gone loved one. It is my favorite possession.

Why give second-hand things only? We should rather give things that we would like to receive to the poor. Like cash money. And enough to make a difference at that.
Hi, token unhoused person (and public health geek) here. Both of your hearts are in the right place, but it's not that deep tbh. Material is material, and it's valid to invest material in education and also just in artistic pleasure. And a ton of what gets donated to thrift stores ends up being thrown out anyway. Secondly/to the first reply: By all means, I agree about letting people have nice things and the way it communicates that unhoused people are equals, and how giving actual funds honors our autonomy and all that good stuff! Thanks for speaking up for that angle! But we also shouldn't discourage generosity in more affordable forms either. The vast majority of direct aid for low-income people comes from other low-income people.
An alternative is to ask the charity shop for the donated items they get that are too worn to sell - they get a lot of stuff that should really have been tossed rather than donated. They generally are thrilled to have someone take it off their hands. They don't have to pay to have it hauled off, you get free weaving material, and it saves stuff from going in the landfill. I get a lot of t-shirts and sheets for weaving this way. They make really nice rugs.

Love that rug !! Great video !! I mostly make mine out of fabric strips that are leftover from quilting, old bedsheets, tablecloth and things like that. Your method is really new to me. I'm going to give it a try this winter.
Incredible. Your skill and method creates a beautiful rug. You put much time and effort into your work. Thank you for demonstrating the exact steps to fold old fabrics and clothes into strips for neat weaving.
Thank you so much for sharing this, it is gorgeous. I can see that extra step of ironing and sewing the strips makes this recycled rug look so pretty. I have wanted to try this recycle project but your process has really helped me to see the steps. Thank you
That is the most beautiful rug I have ever seen made from recycled clothing! I've always thought I'd have to go out to buy more thrift store tshirts to complete such a rug because I didn't know you could use different fabrics. Glad you made this video to show it's possible to use various fabrics. I'm impressed you even incorporated a knitted sweater and a quilted fabric in the rug.
Thank you for this , it’s an amazing use of old clothing and brilliant idea to use handing rail as a loom, genius. ❤ I would use pipe cleaners to thread the ends through the rug, and use slip knot to tie the foundation strings so it’s easier to untie them. My late grandma used to make these and she used any type of fabric to make rugs and throws.

I made a scrap rug on somebody else's loom once, and it was so fun (and challenging) to make and design! Yours turned out lovely, but I really want to know more about the loom you used. (It almost looks like a clothing rack, but it must be pretty sturdy, I imagine!)
Beautiful end result, if you have a bunch of clothes to repurpose. I recently made a rug for the floor in front of the toilet, using one pair of my husband’s worn out work jeans. I cut the pant legs into strips about 4 cm wide, sewed them together lengthwise. Hemmed all the edges and then put it through the wash a couple times. The rough edges with the fray exposed face up to catch the dirt and cushion your feet and when it gets dirty you just toss in the wash. It was a quick, one afternoon project and kept that material out of the landfill! Very easy & satisfying.

"Recycling"? For me it is to waste a lot of clothes that would be still wearable for a long time! And even to buy clothes in good condition, because they are cheap, instead of buying cloth then, makes no sence. The rug came out very beautiful, but I don't understand, why it's not made from torn, old unwearable clothes!

It's a valid question, but my thoughts are...there is already a massive amount of clothes in thrift and charity donations. Most of it goes unsold, then shipped to Ghana and other countries where it is often just having to be tossed or burned because there is just so much!! I also found the content inspiring for my own reuse, and think one could easily also do this with not such nice clothes. She also mentioned that some of the clothes had sentimental value to her, so it's kind of cool that she can keep the memories around but in another way :) just some thoughts 🤔💭
