New shooting board build

  • Making a new shooting board for my new low angle plane. It's made from scraps of mdf and plywood, and a piece of birch for the fence and hook. After planing the reference edges that will guide the plane, I put the main assembly together with screws; I used no glue as I was worried it might warp the board, like it did slightly with my first. For the thin piece near the edge of the mdf, I predrilled pilot holes to keep the edge from splitting off. It then needed some adjustment with a card scraper to get a good fit for the plane.
I again used screws to attach the piece that hooks to the benchtop, and then I could use my homemade 1/8" grooving plane without a fence to plane a dust groove in the track. The fence got attached with hex bolts and wing nuts, again learning from my previous shooting board where I didn't get it dead square but was unable to change it because it was glued down. With bolts, I can make microadjustments and then lock it down, and even set it slightly out of square on purpose if I ever would need that.
Finally I finished the board with boiled linseed oil for the lovely color and feel, and rubbed my homemade mix of beeswax and linseed oil on the plane track to make the action nearly frictionless.

Gillis, you make all of these hand-tool projects look easy. As one with a few nicks on my hands, thank you for sharing.

That's because I don't film the time spent scratching my head and wondering what I'm doing ;) Thank you for watching and commenting!

I’ve never seen someone put an outside rail to hold the plane in line. Going to make a new board now!

your design has two strong point, one is the side fence the other is the main fence bolted and not screwed. Nice job

Thanks! Indeed, those were the main reasons I wanted to make a new one.

Hey I made one very similar before watching your video. The difference is that the fence has normal sized bolt holes instead of your enlarged ones.I used the same wing nuts to secure it down.I figured that I only want this to be true for 90deg.so the wing nuts only need to adjust the smallest amount when it goes out.I did think about making bigger holes but I thought that it would give more wiggle room therefore go out of true quicker.have you found this to be the case with your design?? I'm very interested to know ,thanks for the vid.

way too over-engineered. Nice and relaxing to watch, though. I like your workbench, the real deal. Sorry but a simpler approach is my preference.
