The gang: debate for a good 40mins on how to incapacitate the illithid Scanlan: oh it just needs to be blind??? I have a blindness spell :DDDDD I CANTTTTT😂
Would of been.. Not grear, mindflayers have thought steal cantrip. They don't need to see someone, they just need to know someone is there. The sight thing comes from the monster manual calling switching targets as focusing on another target. A wargamer DM would have fourth level force cage ready. A forty foot square that targets a spot.
I feel like Scanlan's always doing this. Episode 1: YOU CAN TURN INVISIBLE? Episode 3: YOU CAN TURN UMBRAHULKS INTO SNAILS? Episode 4: YOU HAVE A BLINDNESS SPELL?
I have actually watched 13 hours of this content in 3 days. I've now lost the notion of time and I dream about Mercer talking to me in bleurhg language.
A few months ago, I fell asleep listening to a Mighty Nein episode, and the dialogue from the characters became the dialogue of my dream. I was a PC alongside the Mighty Nein. It was...something special
55:19 "It is not just a lake, there is a death monster in there. If we go under the water, we're dead." "Is there anything to stand on? Can we stand on anything if we want to fight it, or will we be in the water?" "Well, we can all have water breathing." "Yeah, but we'll be slow." "AND WE'LL BE UNDERWATER, WHERE THERE IS A DEATH MONSTER." God, this makes me want to game again. This is my table in a nutshell.
Izaea it is too funny when people seem to ignore the glaring CR monster in the room. You'd think the words "you see the second ogre -shhhhoop- down into the water after a looming shadow glides by it" (paraphrasing) would make you think, "why don't we just avoid the natural environment of a creature when there are way bigger fish to fry like evil squid and things called K'Varn
What Liam said about D&D being a sort of therapy was spot on. Being able to just forget the real world for a couple hours a week helped me through a lot of rough times.
*Sitting with an ilithid who appears genuinely frightened by lake thing* “I think we should attack the lake thing, that ilithid over there is too dangerous right now.”
Indeed. When Clarota was like "Yes. Aboleth exists in the lake. Don't mess with that." and then half the players have zero idea that anything lives in the lake. C'mon! Listen to your DM.
Taliesin is an uncrowned king of humor. at least once every episode he cracks me up with his comments that mostly goes unnoticed by the rest of the cast.
Since we are reminiscing... how about Marisha's dorf accent from like Ep 2 is STILL brought up around episode 100 of campaign 2. It was that memorable.
Matt Mercer does such an amazing job of making these creatures seem as actual entities. Its easy enough to just have these things be something to kill, but here we have a Mind Flyer of all things come across as a proper person and brilliantly.
It's one of the most fun things about being a DM, if you can pull it off. I had an NPC travelling with the party who was a druid permanently stuck shapeshifted into a sparrow (named Farow), so she could provide some backup healing/utility spells without being much involved with combat (it was a party very light on divine magic). Farow the Sparrow had many a great interaction with the PCs and became a beloved addition to the party dialogue and story. Which made her eventual revealing of her true nature as an ancient copper dragon, mother of one of the party members, kidnapper of a second, and murderer of a third, basically being the horrifying last puzzle piece in the mysterious plot, all the more satisfying to relish. Only the aforementioned murdered party member knew, and he had to back me up that I hadn't just pulled this twist out of my butt and had truly been planning it from the beginning (his character was killed in combat with the dragon form after picking up on hints the rest of the party had missed, then challenging her to single combat away from camp without telling the party). I give that player a TON of credit for never revealing the secret and playing along brilliantly -- even though he'd loved his original character, he loved the direction the plot was going so much that he relinquished her and rolled a new one. It was a campaign I'll never forget.
I love when the party spends like ten minutes talking over a problem, then Tiberius just looks up and is like "Oh is that what you're trying to do?" and immediately solves the problem.
@@kimmehamehaaa7241 yes the snacking! It always cracks me up. I have to double take every time he doesn't use the character voice like "who is this guy?"
@@SchwartzerAdler I must admit I haven't watched TLOVM, but I know that while the beginning is more about pre-stream content, the latter part of the season revolves around the Briarwood arc, which comes after this.
@@TheSolitaryGrape Yeah, they discuss their best kills on the way to Whitestone. So chronologically, Grog's totally recalling the one that happened in this episode :) Have you watched TLoVM yet, by the way? It's great!
Watching the q and a and hearing all of them talk about their hopes and dreams for the show knowing they all come true and infinitely more just fills my heart with so much joy
I realise watching the Q&A afterwards how focused Matt is on being DM. In the Q&A he seems almost totally different, more vibrant and smiley whereas when he is in DM mode he seems to slightly overlook the funnies to keep it real. What a pro.
1:28:26 - It's becoming more and more clear to me that letting Scanlan sneak into the war camp alone was a brilliant move for storytelling purposes. The intensely creepy tone of that experience (which would've been impossible to set with the entire party present, and hard even if the single infiltrator had been someone more confident in their ability to fight solo) stuck for this whole encounter, and made it orders of magnitude more interesting than one long combat between the party and the encampment could have ever been.

THIS needs to be pinned. Eventually Flando comes along to be the time stamp mastermind, but an admin should pin this comment for reference. I can’t tell you how many times an episode I reference these time stamps; and I know I’m not alone.
+Jestin Crawley thats like the best thing ever, and their DM are so fucking good at describing exactly whats going on. just sat and laughed from the amazingness that was happening.
Scanlan being overly friendly with the general while banishing him in the most humiliating way possible was probably the peak of this episode, although Vax getting past that duergar and finishing off the mindflayer before he could even become a threat was pretty cool.
I can totally see a screenplay for this. *Cut to the party planning the attack* Kilith: "So you think if we blind them it will disconnect their powers?" Klarota: "Yesssssss." *Slow pan to Scanlan* Scanlan: "Guys, I have an idea." *Continued pan to Grogg* Grogg: "So do I." *Grogg places a large, brass pot over his head* Scanlan: "... Okay?"
2:29:16 I'm gonna run away from the guy behind me and go straight at the general and just open out my arms and outstretched big hug and I'm gonna be like 'come here big guy! Come here!' and upon touching him, *I'll cast Banish and send him to another dimension* *Music comes to a dead fucking stop*
this series is really good. the only thing is the sound when listening with headphones, sometimes its really quiet and you have to turn the volumn up, then they laugh or yell and it blows your eardrums apart.
I did find it odd that the monster known for mind control enslavement would be so upset about it happening to it. Then I remembered how I dont give two fucks about how my steak feels but would still be upset if a cow ate me.

3:47:41 Matt mentions that at the top of his wish list to play D&D with is Stephen Colbert. This was in 2015. Fast forward to now, 2019. In two days, Matt will be fulfilling his wish by running a one-shot with Stephen Colbert. Proof that with time and patience, dreams really do come true.
That or he's an incredibly talented voice actor who was able to get an audience with him because of his talent an creativity. Time and wishing had nothing to do with it. Determination and talent had everything to.
@@jimtrusselberry6536 you do realise that if he hadn't WANTED to do a DnD match with that guy then he wouldn't have worked toward that goal, right? I mean, yes you are correct, but it's a combination of all four factors. If the wish to meet with him wasn't there he would have had another goal, and it wouldn't be happening. So why don't you just sit down, stop being a party pooper and be nice about getting your point across mate. It's about the dream, and then working toward that dream which Matt has done.
Kaz Winnec The dream is impossible without talent and determination just because someone wants to be a singer doesn’t mean they have the talent or discipline to see it through. That’s my point dreams will only take you so far and I felt like the original comment was downplaying Matt’s work and talent and just leaving it up to “following your dreams” which you’re right without a dream Matt wouldn’t have got to do that with Stephen Colbert, but he still would have been a well known and talented voice actor. That’s my point don’t just rest on your laurels. By all means dream but work for it and realize sometimes you won’t achieve not through any fault of your own but simply someone else is more talented.
@@jimtrusselberry6536 then we're coming from the same place, that's all I was trying to point out, sorry if I came across as a bit of a dick, we've got similar points, just felt like you were trying to knock the positivity out of the original comment. 👌👌 was just trying to say, dream first, work hard to achieve the dream, and sometimes there are smaller dreams/goals after that initial dream is accomplished. I'm pretty new here, and I, much to my own dismay, am only really finding out about these people now, don't know too much about them. Again, apologise if I caused offense.
God I love Liam's voice... if I was even the tiniest bit bi, he'd be my man-crush for sure. I also love how he _uses_ it. He sounds so sincere and... well, how I imagine a half-elf should sound, the sort of lingering, accented speech that makes him somewhat... mysterious, I suppose? And then he goes from using carefully chosen words to saying "fucking with your shit". It's great. Also: The greatest moment of this video has to be "Is my hand still in its mouth?" *blam*
It reminds me of Tyrion Lannister, which immediately makes me like his character so much more. So charismatic and intelligent, but also dashing with a little bit of his own flare to it that makes you want to like him.
I'm another one of those, "I just discovered the show and am now binging the hell out of it!," kinds of folks. Don't mind me. I'm just asking D&D where it's been all my life and thrilled that every fight scene is lovingly described. This series is a work of art.
Percy never gets to do a lot in combat, normally one shot or two then that's it, either his weapon jams or the DM does something to him that stops him doing anything. Edit: I take that back shooting the gun inside the creatures mouth, class.
Azreal Dragon it happen to me also, with my sniper in dark heresy, the GM tries all the time to disable my PC one way ore another cause when doing roll for stat it ended up being insanely OP so to level the field a bit he has to kinda concentrate the game to nerf a bit my character.
Me: watching this campaign for the second time Matt: I'd love to have Vin Diesel and Stephen Colbert. Marisha: I'd love to fight a beholder. Liam: I'd love to make D&D cool. Oh what the future has in store for all of you...
Oh my gosh, Matt has all the mad voice and character range/storytelling skills. So awesome. As an aspiring voice actor myself, I have so much respect for this.
I love that Ashley Johnson is known for voicing a violent and vulgar girl in Ellie, but then Pike is introduced and seems like this polite and soft-spoken sweetheart.
Imagine what was going through that Mind-Flayer's head as he died. Coming back here and watching these now right after campaign two's finale. it's amazing to see how much the refinement, knowledge of rules and audio quality has changed but how the joy is exactly the same ❤
I assume you mean refinement of the show itself, because the cast remains totally unrefined in the best ways possible 😂 (I'm looking at you, Sam "he was named after good smells, his name was Pussy" Riegel 😂)
Concentration spell that lasts up to one minute which keeps the general out of action for 10 rounds or until Scanlan either releases the spell or fails a Con check after taking damage. It's entirely non-lethal and nobody in the party (Grog or Tiberius mostly) can even injure him accidentally. Your objection is one of absolutely not understanding how it all works.
@@lilataylor7825 An ill informed and consequently unfunny joke. But of course I'm an asshole for being the bearer of bad news. It doesn't become funny or less wrong if I say nothing.
Sam's face of pure enthralment while he's listening to Matt play Clarota is exactly how I felt the whole time. So well thought out and exciting. I'm always on the edge of my seat.
I wanna hug Clarota, or at least somehow give him some sort of comfort. The dude gets thrown out, lives in poverty for years, and still wants to save his people after the shit they put him through. Dude deserves a medal or something.
+ClockworkFreya I think he would really appreciate the hug. Putting head on his chest does make it easier for him to wrap his tendrils around your head, bore through your skull, and eat your brain. Dudes a mine-flayer, after all :P
idk what you guys are talking about, I think mind flayers are nothing but big, snuggly teddy bear who just want to love you and squeeze you... (I haven't passed my charm save yet...)
Liam to his children: "It's true, I'd sell you if I needed to buy new books and dice". Liam actually DMs games for his kids and their friends. D&D has actually helped Liam through some personal and mental issues. It's been kind of a therapy for him, so it's probably made him a better person to live with.
watching this after Matt completed his second one shot with Stephen Colbert for Red Nose Day, and then hearing that he would really like to play a game with Stephen Colbert in the Q&A almost 7 years ago brings me so much joy
Later in this campaign Grog won't go near water at all after he discover there are consequences to touching stuff in Percy's workshop. Fjord- sees a puddle and he must investigate. Nein, Flord! Nein!

I love how Mercer sits there when they argue like he's a dad at a play date he didn't wanna go to
55:19 "It is not just a lake, there is a death monster in there. If we go under the water, we're dead."
"Is there anything to stand on? Can we stand on anything if we want to fight it, or will we be in the water?"
"Well, we can all have water breathing."
"Yeah, but we'll be slow."
"AND WE'LL BE UNDERWATER, WHERE THERE IS A DEATH MONSTER."
God, this makes me want to game again.
*But I won't be worried about that part*
What Liam said about D&D being a sort of therapy was spot on. Being able to just forget the real world for a couple hours a week helped me through a lot of rough times.
I forgot how quiet Percy was in the begining, especially with how vocal he becomes after he goes home.
*Sitting with an ilithid who appears genuinely frightened by lake thing*
“I think we should attack the lake thing, that ilithid over there is too dangerous right now.”
Abalith, tomb of annilason flash backs
The aboleth is no joke. You don't want to get diseased by it or enslaved. Would have been an interesting encounter.
Indeed. When Clarota was like "Yes. Aboleth exists in the lake. Don't mess with that." and then half the players have zero idea that anything lives in the lake. C'mon! Listen to your DM.
I love how Matt gets "the look" when he goes into Clarence's voice. It's great. He just twists his face up and then lets out a hiss.
It’s clarota!
That voice was in my dream last night cuz I was falling asleep listening to part 3 and I’m weirdly okay with that being included in my dream
I like that as Matt says Pike is heavily armored, Taliesin starts clinking and rattling tin foil and nobody noticed it.

He looks like an elf as well!
Lauren Carroll the ears the face the hair the voice everything just elf
L
Nope. With all that acting I'm pretty well convinced he's a doppleganger.
Yes!!!
Marisha to Laura: “Don’t you have a picture of your character sheet?”
Me: “Wait, can’t she just pull it up on D&D Beyo...ohh, right....”
Was D&D beyond not a thing in 2015?

1:28:26 - It's becoming more and more clear to me that letting Scanlan sneak into the war camp alone was a brilliant move for storytelling purposes. The intensely creepy tone of that experience (which would've been impossible to set with the entire party present, and hard even if the single infiltrator had been someone more confident in their ability to fight solo) stuck for this whole encounter, and made it orders of magnitude more interesting than one long combat between the party and the encampment could have ever been.

I'm another one of those, "I just discovered the show and am now binging the hell out of it!," kinds of folks. Don't mind me. I'm just asking D&D where it's been all my life and thrilled that every fight scene is lovingly described. This series is a work of art.
Welcome to the club mate! enjoy!
48:11 Matt: An ancient mind...
Me: wait, it's not an aboleth, is it--
48:21 Matt: An Aboleth...
Me: oh no.
Aboleths, are my favorite party killer
@@Yndratdnable for what is a trip to the underdark, if not to meet the ancient overlords of the planet right?
I fucking love aboleths
Me: (flash back to puffin forest video) they call me whimsy!
@@crodthesorrysap4165 Heheheh
That amazing Mind Flayer voice will haunt my nightmares. Love it!

"Can I attempt to build sunglasses?"
> Matt's face.
If he had the syphilis disease he would already know the answer!
Hearing Matt say Stephen Colbert as his person he wants as a guest star makes it even more wonderful that he was able to do a one shot with him
Two one-shots now. Here's to many more!
"I'm gonna cast dominate on the general"
"whozzat do?"
"He's a power top"
Me: Hey brain, Whats a sleeping schedule.
Brain: The thing you killed when you started to watch this XD.
Same XD
I woke up at 3am and started watching.. it's now 7am and I have work soon :O
Isn‘t that also what any type of smart enemies would do? Identify the biggest threat, and do whatever‘s necessary to bring that threat down
Me: watching this campaign for the second time
Matt: I'd love to have Vin Diesel and Stephen Colbert.
Marisha: I'd love to fight a beholder.
Liam: I'd love to make D&D cool.
Oh what the future has in store for all of you...
Anyone can make D&D cool, but you'll never make D&D "earns $11 million in donations to create an animated series" cool 😁
When I heard Marisha say that this time, I had to do a double take to see Matt's reaction. "One of these days"
"Little did they know!"
Oh if they could've seen the future...
Travis: "Grog and Scanlan have no bastard children that we know of"
Matt: *laughs*
That aged well
This is the only half worth comment ive seen since coming back to C1
I wonder if thats when he got the idea
I wonder if that will ever come back up🤔
spoilers :(
@@zoboothemafoo A good question indeed. XD
Oh my gosh, Matt has all the mad voice and character range/storytelling skills. So awesome. As an aspiring voice actor myself, I have so much respect for this.
We need fan art of Grog wearing the pot.

“Geh Geh. I’m dah bri’esht one in dah room.”
I love that Ashley Johnson is known for voicing a violent and vulgar girl in Ellie, but then Pike is introduced and seems like this polite and soft-spoken sweetheart.
Imagine what was going through that Mind-Flayer's head as he died.
Mind-Flayer: Okay, so here's the game pla- *goblin poop hurls at his head* HOLY SHI-*feces cover his head* You will regret that, petulant swi-*is stabbed through the neck* You will suffer for that you-*dagger impales his maw* I, I can't die covered in- *dies*
Matt Mercer is a beast, the illithid monologue was unbelievable!
Weston Karls, This was the moment I knew did betray them... Only villains monologue.
If Matt ever has kids, they are going to have nightmares if ever reads to them something scary.
+BiggySn1p3r is he looking for volunteers?
+Teresa Harris He's not single, so probably not.
+belad0nna I may be wrong, but I think she wants to be adopted by him
your wrong.....
+Teresa Harris My wrong?
Coming back here and watching these now right after campaign two's finale.
it's amazing to see how much the refinement, knowledge of rules and audio quality has changed
but how the joy is exactly the same ❤
I assume you mean refinement of the show itself, because the cast remains totally unrefined in the best ways possible 😂 (I'm looking at you, Sam "he was named after good smells, his name was Pussy" Riegel 😂)
I never thought I would be sympathetic to a mindflayer
Scanlan: Also remember folks, dont kill the general, we need information! uwu
Also Scanlan: Banishes him to an alternate dimension
He'd come back.
Eventually.
Nicol Bolas it was just a joke, but congrats on being a giant asshole.
@@lilataylor7825 An ill informed and consequently unfunny joke. But of course I'm an asshole for being the bearer of bad news. It doesn't become funny or less wrong if I say nothing.
Nicol Bolas I agree with you but I’m also sad for the writer
Sam's face of pure enthralment while he's listening to Matt play Clarota is exactly how I felt the whole time. So well thought out and exciting. I'm always on the edge of my seat.
It's actually really cool to hear Matt talk about what goes into DMing. It's such a big job.
1:30:00 “You feel the slightest hint of regret emanating from the mind flayer” bruh he knows he picked the wrong group for subterfuge
+Frederik sh Mind FlayeNot usually very nice though.
+21700r they are to oth3 mindflayers
idk what you guys are talking about, I think mind flayers are nothing but big, snuggly teddy bear who just want to love you and squeeze you...
(I haven't passed my charm save yet...)
+ClockworkFreya Hugging an ilithid is a horrible idea. Getting their face close to your face is the last thing you'll do.
Matt: "Liam has two children."
...
Liam: "This (playing D&D with Matt etc.) is the best thing that ever happened to me." 😂😂
Now that is the biggest oof
Liam's children: *suffers 10d10 psychic damage*
@@filipferencak2717 Liam's children: no, no, he has a point.
Liam to his children: "It's true, I'd sell you if I needed to buy new books and dice".
Liam actually DMs games for his kids and their friends.
D&D has actually helped Liam through some personal and mental issues. It's been kind of a therapy for him, so it's probably made him a better person to live with.
Have you met a kid? They're the worst.
watching this after Matt completed his second one shot with Stephen Colbert for Red Nose Day, and then hearing that he would really like to play a game with Stephen Colbert in the Q&A almost 7 years ago brings me so much joy
Bucket of Poop. Now classified as a legendary weapon

Later in this campaign Grog won't go near water at all after he discover there are consequences to touching stuff in Percy's workshop. Fjord- sees a puddle and he must investigate. Nein, Flord! Nein!
