harry potter goes to school at hogwarts. in hogwarts, one of the first things a first year wizard/witch does is get sorted into one of four “houses”, depending on their unique traits. these four houses are gryffindor, ravenclaw, hufflepuff, and slytherin.
although jk rowling (the author) never intended for it to happen, the four houses have sort of been generalized into heavy stereotypes: gryffindors are brave, bold, and good... ravenclaws are nerdy, prudish, and obsessed with books... hufflepuffs are weak, cheerful, and totally stoners... and slytherins are evil, mean, and all worship satan.
these, of course, are all untrue, so don’t let that deter you. since almost all of the main characters were in gryffindor, most people consequently want to also be in gryffindor, but the other three houses are equally as important. there are good _and_ bad traits for every house.
finally, the whole point of this tangent. people are saying that tom is definitely a hufflepuff (despite his protests) because he’s funny, he’s kind, he’s loyal, he’s supportive of others, etc. etc. etc. which are all traits of being a hufflepuff.
