Before I seen this tutorial I attempted to replace the brushes I followed this same system except made the mistake of taking the whole cover off. It was very difficult to put all back together. When I finally did it worked for half an hour before it got Hot and started smoking. So don't do that. My advice is prize it open just enough like demonstrated in this video to replace brushes not anymore as necessary. Helpful video. Thanks
I came across thos video because I was changing the brushes in my Dremel 4300. It has easy to access lockscrews to access brushes yet when I attempted to pull one out the Carbon brush came loose from the spring and is stuck in the device I now have to try remove before installing new ones. Anyone ever have this problem?
Thanks Matt, this was a really relevant video as just had to change the brushes on my 4300. I'd recommend giving it a good clean whilst you have that cover off, seems like the dust can also affect the brushes, even new ones. Happy carving!
Hi Matt, don't know if you saw my post but after i changed the brushes i was still having problems, they seem to have cleared up after the clean but i've not really used it yet, just test run. Until then i loved my 4300, i killed a lower powered Black and Decker pretty quickly and now i've got the die grinder for tougher work so if the 4300 keeps going i'll be happy. I've mostly got hard woods here like beech, oak and walnut and it copes well if i take it a bit slower.
@@clairetolmie5640 That makes sense. I found during the break in period the dremel really improved after running it for about 8min at a low speed. You could hear it getting smoother.
I think problem is Blue wire was not connect well with brush base. Blue wire is speed sensor signal of microcontroller, so not well connect can lead to not stable working.
Hi Bro Matt, ❤ from India, thanks for uploading such informative video, here DREMEL has limited presence, does not sell maintainence accessories & spare parts, have to rely on online business houses for importing the stuffs for us neither DREMEL educates us about the need for changing of carbon brushes, I have one such unit with carbon brush caps without any opening slits ! May God bless you!
I do not understand why they use caps that cannot be opened without disassembling the complete housing. When I opened my Dremel for the first time I nearly lost springs and caps.
Thanks for the video! I replaced my brushes twice (looks like the same size/model as the one you show). The last time the brush went, it melted completely into the housing. Don't you think Dremel could do better considering this tool has many attachments that increase the consumer's cost to use it? I gave up, but not happy with their design flaws.
I'm not sure if I have burnt mine out as I still have 5mm of brush left the dremel got hot to hold and smoke came out the front end I assume it's had it even though it makes the same sound as yours with the worn brushes.
'Hopefully that helped you out...' Yes, indeed... Thanks for sharing that. The 'un-unscrewable' plugs were giving me quite a bit of a headache. Didn't occur to me that you now have to take the thing halfway apart... Imo the threaded plugs were better, at least in terms of servicing the thing. (Not sure about their longevity or whatever else made Dremel change that design.)
@@MattCarves My guess is that it's just a design iteration: Removing the threads make the injection molds cheaper to manufacture, a bit more robust and remove the need of reworking the shells that don't come out with perfect threads. So they probably just use up the old molds (and sell old stock) and then fully turn to the threadless design.
The photos of model 4000 tools I saw today (Amazon for USA buyers) have caps with a slit for a screwdriver. I assume these are threaded. Don't understand why yours are caps with no threads and no screwdriver slit.
I just upgraded to the 4000 and noticed that straight up rather a dog act making you pull it appart just for brushes have you thought or is there in possible way to modify it to retain the screw caps again to make the 4000 great again sure it's not a job done frequently but still Good informative video well spoken good video
Great video, I have the same model in England. My brushes have just failed and I'm struggling to find the correct part number for the replacement brushes. Can't find it in either the manual or the uk dremel website. Do you know what the part number is? Thanks
Hi I just go to my local hardware shop in New zealand. Sorry I don't have the packet anymore. But if you follow the link it takes you to a UK store that has this part. You may want to phone them to confirm the part number but it looks to me that it is good. www.sparetoolparts.co.uk/dremel-4000-carbon-brush-set-2-610-005-646-spare-part-type-f-013-400-045.html . Hope that helps and you get your dremel going again
@@MattCarves Hi Matt, yes great service and communication from them. The part was out of stock when I ordered it 8/5/21 but came on the 16/5/21. Not had chance to get to repair it yet though! Thanks again.
sorry and bother you again, but by chance can you tell me the measures of the brushes? I got online 6.3×4.8×8.4mm, I would like to ask you why you have it on hand at the moment, mine is being repaired at the moment 😅
Well done Matt, but my heart missed a heartbeat when I saw you mistreating the tool by prying it with a chisel. Come on! Little ttrick: when the 5 screws are unscrewed go to the front with one hand. Put one finger in the hole where the axis is going into the housing, as if you want to lift it open with one finger. That won't work as the housing is reasonably tight together. But you can lift the front axis and then the housing will loosen very very easily.
Perfectly clear video, thanks! Macro details on screws etc were much appreciated!
Thank you for the feedback Roberto. Have a great day 👍
Great little tip Matt & I concur with Claire on making sure its dust free in there so you get full contact 100% of the time.
Pesky dust. I have a air compressor amazes me how much dust I produce.🙂

Glad I could help!

Thanks Matt. Just taken delivery of a Dremel 4000 & was beginning to think the bushes weren't replaceable.

Thank you for your comment. Sorry to hear dremel is hard to get in India. Have a great day 👍
I just learned about your channel from watching the recent stream on Cornelius Creations. I love what I'm seeing already. This is an easy sub for me.
Welcome aboard! Glad you are finding it useful.
Awesome Matt, thanks for this, very helpful video, and was nice to see how the brushes work too..
cheers Bap
Thank you Matt !...
I've had questions..and now you've answered those unasked questions.. hah !.. brilliant...🌿🌿🌿
No problem Pamela.
Great to meet you today! Awesome channel/video, and looking forward to following along. Thanks for sharing :)
Cool cheers Thomas . Have a great day 😀

Thanks. I was going to have to buy a new dremel cause I can't find my receipt, thanks to you now I only have to search where to buy the brushes 👍

Very helpful, I was about to pull out the caps;-)
cheers for commenting 👍

Yeah I have had that happen to me too. Would be a lot simpler if they used screw caps. Cheers for watching 👍

That doesnt sound good. I have never had smoke come out of mine. Sorry can't cant offer you any advice on that one.

Yeah. Here in New Zealand all we get are the unthreaded caps. I'm not sure why. I think certain countries get different caps. Cheers 👍

Thanks Matt. I've just got that model and was wandering how I was going to do this eventually..
I think 4000s do have the screw caps in other countries. which makes things a lot easier.
Yeah mine appears to have a rubber coating like yours with no discernable screw slot.
The photos of model 4000 tools I saw today (Amazon for USA buyers) have caps with a slit for a screwdriver. I assume these are threaded. Don't understand why yours are caps with no threads and no screwdriver slit.
Hi Glenn. In The USA they tend to be screw caps but in some other countries they are fixed caps. Which are painful. Wish they were all screw caps. 🙂

Yeah, i am not sure why Dremel in NZ and some other countries don't have the screw caps. Cheers for watching
Well that's good to know, my tool has been doing that for ages now. I got a Rockwell shop series tool, but I'm guessing it's the same principle.
Cool glad to be of help🙂

If it sounds the same as with the old brushes in maybe something else?
i got one no threads , im from Australia , so your close with the New Zealand
hello, sorry to bother you, but do you happen to know the dremel stylo which torx it has? by chance the dremel 4000 and 4250 both use torx screws?

Who knows, but yes it's a pain alright.🙄🍻
