  • YAY! It finally worked, the do it yourself javelin rocket launcher is complete! After 3 weeks of trial and error its working superbly. The model rocket/rc plane is quite a trip to build and luckily after the 5th or so prototype it works consistently.

    Hey Peter, I was a javelin gunner many years ago when I was in the regular Army. I think this is freaking incredible! I was never much of a gamer, but it's definitely a gamers weapon complete with 4-way controls. A lot of money for a 21 year old kid to be carrying around too. We were told by the Raytheon guys that came to my unit that the tubes cost 70K apiece and the CLU (command launch unit) was 125K. Anyway, nice work.

Also, I think, you might aswell melt your own engines with a bit more power, and, of course scale up the test area. Awesome project up until now, would be pleasing to see more of this!

      Feuerwerks FunGE The world has another spoiled kid with a rich daddy and a shed full of CNC gear.
      Take away the fancy printed shit (which the machine made for him based on a model downloaded from the Internet) and you are left with a cardboard tube containing a model rocket engine, a child's toy stuck together with hot glue.
      >inb4 u jelly.
      No, I am saddened that so many consider sticking premade parts together a "genius" activity. Nothing here was designed from scratch or truly self-made, which is why despite the many confused comments "NASA" will not be beating at his door. Although I could be wrong, the tech industry is desperate to recruit more brown people, as we saw when the Muslim boy took apart an alarm clock and stuck it in a suitcase last year, suddenly he is the press darling and "genius inventor."
      At least this kid is sticking the parts someone else designed or made together on his own, it's a start.

    • @fireflyfireworks668
      @fireflyfireworks668 7 лет назад +8

      Well, if all of this is so easy, I wanna see your part in this competition. Of course, he MAY not designed the parts himself, but are you sure? Until you show me the templates he used online, I believe in that he designed them all by himself. And of course, a CNC machine makes the job way easier, but you could still cut them yourself, however, why waste that much time? Still it's a considerable amount of technic and dynamics understanding which you are in need of to properly build everything together. If you begrudge him for his money you don't have.... just stop complaining and work for it. Also, the comparison with the muslim inventor kid just isn't fitting, or did PeterSripol ever say he does all this for becoming a job or for any job releated issues or just for fun?

      Good morning Peter, Question for ya. I have a Guinea pig (the plane you designed) not the little animal.... I pretty much learned how to fly RC with it. It was my first plane, that being said it has had a few unscheduled landing and the tips of the wings have gotten a little beat up. My question - How much would the flight characteristics be effected if I was to cut the wings down (wingspan) about 5.5" from the wintips inwards? Thanks in advance for any info on this. Hope your having a good day -Jamie

    • @PeterSripol
      @PeterSripol  8 лет назад +5

      Hmmm, I think it should actually fly OK! you may notice a little bit more wing waggle or less aileron control at lower speeds. Other than that it should still perform ok. Also be prepared for a faster flying plane!
      Hope this helps!

    • @jhbuxton4
      @jhbuxton4 8 лет назад +2

      +PeterSripol Faster plane, I won't be complaining about that. If I get any noticeable waggle I might try some wing fences or winglets. I'll keep you posted. I'm headed out now to give the guinea pig a final few flights with the original wing. Tonight the chopping/modification will commence! Thanks for the information. Have a good day! Jamie

    Pete, I would recommend looking into potassium nitrate sugar rocket motors. For a size to size comparison, they are just as powerful and only cost about 50 cents to make. Grant Thompson has a good video on how to make them. Since they don't have that black powder ejection charge they are also less likely to explode.

    • @rayjones3212
      @rayjones3212 7 лет назад

      Was this the type of motor which was featured in the October Sky movie? I'd think that a rocket motor contained in something more substantial would also be able to be reused and perhaps have a 2nd stage added.

    • @HoverFreddy
      @HoverFreddy 7 лет назад

      In the October sky movie they used Potassium Chlorate and sugar: It's a rather unstable mixure,the Potassium Chlorate is susceptible to explode in presence of organic fuels.

    • @MatHolliday

    yeah I would suggest redesigning it to be primarily rear prop powerered with the rocket just used as a booster to clear the tube. then you got sustained flight, and be a lot more realistic. this would be fun to see at a show.

    I'd just have a spring which is locked back by a sear and then the trigger that fires the motor also releases the sear, so initial launch is spring assisted. More reliable and cheaper. Great job though, the footage is epic. Would love to see this using an arduino IR array (4 IR sensors could give you guidance to control surface) which would make this fire and forget!
