To me, Penguins have a very sad and depressing life. I love them, but can't bare to watch their stories in documentaries. They face huge odds against their survival. God help the Beautiful Penguins.
Why is it so hard for humans to accept all the things they have done wrong and try to fix it? What is so offensive about accepting that we are ruining the earth and we need to fix it? People get so mad at the idea that they are doing anything wrong at all to the Earth. Who cares about politics, don't you want to do all you can to make the Earth healthier and safer for future generations and animals who share it?
One thing about the human psyche. There is an odd dilemma where we are both social beings but also incredibly selfish. Without a decent dose of emotion it is easy to ignore and deny something that isn’t personal or in your immediate (space/time) vicinity. At least for the standard population. The difference between us and politicians is that they have a money incentive too.
It's so sad that some people still don't believe that global warming exist, or is caused by humans. Hopefully our next generation will be more educated and more perceptive to the world then those naysayers.
The best thing about penguins is that if you catch them at the right time, they can transform into 40 foot tall robotic cybertrons with plasma guns and magnetic forcefields. They still can't fly though.
It's great to preserve penguins and all but one of the biggest tragedies is that equally endangered species of animals and plants (yes endangered plants) are ignored even if they are cheaper and easer to save and are very important to their ecosystems because they are not as cute or fearsome or relatable or whatever other trait that make the appealing to humans.
I would have preferred some specificity as to how these are endangered. One would think with whaling and over-fishing that they would be most vulnerable to pollution or an increase in their predators.
global warming is too vague a term, I want specifics as to how changing climate is negatively affecting them, with record cold in the antarctic is this threatening their ability to survive ? if so, how could it be rectified by any current proposals to address climate change. and with over-fishing, is it depleting the stocks they rely on for survival, or is it pushing animals like sea lions, seals and walrus's to lean towards a more penguin rich diet ? one would assume with an ecosystem in peril the life at the top of those foods chains would be more indicative of the food chains collapse. So are these same trends shown in the whale and sea lion populations ? pop science is the worst kind of science because it has less to do with science and more to do with political policy. changing your actions in accordance with pop science is no more prudent than doing so in accordance with your local tarot card readers predictions.
***** I tend to not take people's word for things especially when specifics are not provided. Erratic storms is a misnomer since storms are by nature hard to predict. ocean currents are a larger factor, and if they are atypical then that may be a significant factor, but if that atypical current pattern is limited, at least as far as duration is concerned, then that should also be a part of the discussion
We shouldn’t have overfishing, we can eat something else (what we can harvest or grow) We still can eat chicken and other meat But we can’t raise fishes at home to eat it 😅
I get a pay check of $1.150 every month. Barely pays for my rent, food and utilities. What is left, a couple of hundred dollars is all I have to spend. That money goes for car insurance and gas. I might be able to play a round of golf with what is left. Maybe. There are a lot of things that I wish I could have to make my life easier for me, but alas I can afford them. I too am greedy for stuff that is made in our factories.
Not to be a septic, but I think that some species are supposed to be small in numbers, the Galapagos is not a super big place, now it is not small, but I do not think it could hold a million penguins.
Wow, I know I love penguins but I've never known so mutch about them :) maby ted ed should make a vid.about why you can't taste any thing while u r n an airplane
NOOOOO!!! Penguins are my favourite animals! Don’t let them die please. Please help stop global warming and walk instead of driving and PLEASE don’t overfish.
+Paula Bean When the ecology of the entire ocean is being altered by human activity, 'protecting' some small islands local habitats probably wont be enough to save the population there.
scottabc72 Well, humankind is also a product of Nature and Evolution. Maybe it is meant to be that our species alters the planet in certain ways. Or maybe it's just coincidence, perhaps even unavoidable! ;-)
I guess its unavoidable if people just engage in mental masturbation when we need to commit to doing things differently in order to save other species and maybe ourselves. 'Evolution' has no values, if a 'successful' species wipes out its own food source and goes extinct as a result thats all part of evolution. We have a choice because we are conscious of our larger effect.
scottabc72 It remains a matter of perspective, though. The Incas were convinced they could secure their food sources by sacrificing people. In hindsight, we can say they were wrong. Maybe future generations will look back upon us and wonder why we thought that conservation was ever an issue for human continuity.
+Paula Bean Humans are an invasive species. we have polluted the seas and we are overpopulated, causing us to go further and further into habitats and ecosystems that we did not previously live in, nor are we fit to live in without our technology. If you listened to the video, many penguin species fit a very specific niche in their ecosystems. If they are gone, the balance of those ecosystems will be disrupted, resulting in unprecedented consequences. Humans were not meant to be in these places, yet we are the greatest threat to them. Our waste alone has far reaching effects that have never been seen in history ever. Our world and the populations on it simply were not made to support this overuse of resources, including us humans. it won't be long after these species die out that we will be endangered as well.
Deficit spending, using materials you can not afford to buy so you borrow and enslave your children to afford, is what is causing you pain, start a march called stop over consuming resources its killing our planet, stop waste created by consuming more than you can afford to otherwise, or do you live off state handouts and therefore consume more than you would be allowed to without using the violence of state hospices? and are therefore the cause of dying penguins? or do you really care other than, that good people care about penguins and you can use that as the means of allowing the government to steal, I mean tax more and give to you and your play time?
is sad because those who have more power to change this reality are those who least Interested.

I would have preferred some specificity as to how these are endangered. One would think with whaling and over-fishing that they would be most vulnerable to pollution or an increase in their predators.
They explained specifically that over-fishing and global warming are the greatest threats to them.
without any of the specificity I asked, only vague generalities
How specific do you need the info to be? Both overfishing and global warming are pretty obvious in how they would affect penguins.
global warming is too vague a term, I want specifics as to how changing climate is negatively affecting them, with record cold in the antarctic is this threatening their ability to survive ? if so, how could it be rectified by any current proposals to address climate change. and with over-fishing, is it depleting the stocks they rely on for survival, or is it pushing animals like sea lions, seals and walrus's to lean towards a more penguin rich diet ? one would assume with an ecosystem in peril the life at the top of those foods chains would be more indicative of the food chains collapse. That's funny. The penguin living in the most protected habitat (Galapagos Islands) is the most threatened. Evolution at work?
